Modification And Psychometric Examination Of A Self-Report Measure Of Fear In Older Adults., Jane Null Kogan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Very few studies have examined the concept of fear in older adults. Moreover, there is no self-report measure of fear that has been shown to be psychometrically sound for use with older individuals. The primary purposes of the present study were: (a) to develop a measure of self-reported fear that includes fears relevant to older adulthood, (b) to develop a measure for assessing daily interference associated with fears, and (c) to examine the psychometric properties of this new instrument. Secondarily, preliminary findings from Kogan and Edelstein (1997) raise the question of why some older adults report interference resulting from fear …

"They Don't Throw, They Turn; They Don't Fire, They Burn": Place And Identity In Seagrove, North Carolina., Li-Ting Hung

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent Scholarship in geography explores the cultural identity of place by analyzing literature, music and art, but few scholars have studied pottery art, one of the oldest forms of art making. This study of Seagrove, a small central North Carolina town with a long tradition of locally produced pottery, examines the way place identity develops, is presented, takes multiple forms, and is contested through pottery art. Further, it explores the concept of institutionalized place identity by analyzing the impact of a new Pottery Center and Museum in this town. The research has carried out by means of open-ended interviews with …

Evaluation Of Biocidal Polymers For The Treatment Of Domestic Water Supplies: Application Of Polymers To The Surface Of Carrier Particles., Robert Matthew Taylor Jan 1999

Evaluation Of Biocidal Polymers For The Treatment Of Domestic Water Supplies: Application Of Polymers To The Surface Of Carrier Particles., Robert Matthew Taylor

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The performance of N-Halamine polymers in eliminating bacteria from water streams was studied in this research. Numerous experiments were performed to determine the efficacy of both pure N-Halamine polymer and polymer coated on carrier particles to remove Escherichia coli from water streams. The results for this research were inconclusive for a number of reasons. First, the polymer used in this research was not active. It lacked the correct chemical structure to kill bacteria effectively. Additionally, when active polymer was received, insufficient quantities were available to produce viable coated carrier particles. The ability to regenerate the polymer using bleach solutions could …

The Degradation Of Drugs In Formaldehyde., Devona Gwen James Jan 1999

The Degradation Of Drugs In Formaldehyde., Devona Gwen James

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Embalming fluid, formaldehyde, is commonly used to preserve the body following death. Yet, this practice may confound forensic toxicology studies because of its potential reactivity with drugs. The few studies that have been conducted have focused on the tricyclic antidepressants, nortriptyline and desipramine, demonstrating that these compounds undergo methylation to form amitriptyline and imipramine in the presence of formaldehyde. The present study was designed to investigate several classes of common forensic drugs for their reaction in the presence of formaldehyde. Three concentrations of formaldehyde solutions were used (5, 10, and 20%) at a pH of no adjustment (3-3.5), 7 and …

The Behavioral And Neurochemical Effects Of Prenatal Stress On Stress Responsive Systems In Rats., David Albert White Jan 1999

The Behavioral And Neurochemical Effects Of Prenatal Stress On Stress Responsive Systems In Rats., David Albert White

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research points to a combination of genetic, physiological, and environmental factors in the origin of anxiety and depressive disorders. These factors are adversely impacted by stress and can be influenced by both the prenatal and postnatal environments. Our research shows that offspring of mothers stressed during the last week of gestation appear to be normal in basal behavioral states. However, upon the presentation of stressful stimuli in the forms of anxiogenic drugs (e.g. yohimbine and idazoxan), prenatally stressed offspring respond differentially in comparison with control (normal) offspring. Doses of yohimbine and idazoxan that increased acoustic startle in control animals were …

Association Of Late Embryonic Mortality In Beef Cows With Concentrations Of Estradiol-17beta And Prostaglandin F(2)Alpha., Phillip J. Bridges

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The relationship of luteal function and embryonic survival to concentrations of estradiol-17β or prostaglandin (PG) F2α was evaluated after induction of replacement corpora lutea (CL) in lutectomized beef cows maintained on flurogestone acetate (FGA). On day 26 of pregnancy the CL was enucleated, and the ovary contralateral to the gravid uterine horn was removed. Pregnancy was maintained initially by the administration of FGA (6 mg, s.c.) every 12 h, beginning 12 h before lutectomy. Between days 28 and 31, when a follicle had grown to 10 mm in diameter, cows were treated with hCG (1000 IU, i.m.) to induce formation …

Development Of Murine Leukemia Virus-Based Vectors For More Effective Gene Therapy: Genetic Analysis Of Direct Repeat Deletions., Krista Anda Delviks Jan 1999

Development Of Murine Leukemia Virus-Based Vectors For More Effective Gene Therapy: Genetic Analysis Of Direct Repeat Deletions., Krista Anda Delviks

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Retroviral vectors containing direct repeats of homologous sequences constitute a powerful in vivo model system to analyze reverse transcriptase (RT) template-switching events. Directly repeated sequences in retroviral genomes are unstable and frequently deleted from the final integrated provirus due to RT's low template affinity and processivity. We developed murine leukemia virus (MLV)-based self-inactivating and self-activating vectors containing 701-bp direct repeats composed of segments of the herpes simplex virus-1 thymidine kinase gene (HTK). After one cycle of retroviral replication, we demonstrated functional reconstitution of the HTK suicide gene at a frequency of 57% when the direct repeats were adjacent to one …

Increased Nitric Oxide Production During Pregnancy: Focusing On The Tissue Source And Physiological Role Of The Pregnancy Induced Increase In Nitric Oxide Synthesis., Beth R. Santmyire

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Nitric oxide (NO) has been implicated as a mediator of the normal renal and systemic hemodynamic changes of pregnancy. In study 1, we measured NO 3 + NO2 (=NOx) in plasma (PNOx) and 24 hour urinary excretion of NOx (UNOxV) and cGMP (UcGMPV) as well as tissue NOS activity in virgin (V), mid (MP) and late pregnant (LP) rats. The results from this study suggest that the soluble isoforms, NOS1 and/or NOS2, are the isoforms responsible for increased NO production during pregnancy. In study 2 we have evaluated PNOx, UNOxV, UcGMPV and tissue NOS activity in V, MP, and LP …

The Effects Of Land-Use History On Plant Species Diversity And Abundance In Dambo Wetlands In Zimbabwe., Fortune Feresu Shonhiwa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Land-use history in Zimbabwe has caused dramatic differences in erosion severity between Commercial and Communal Lands. High population numbers have been found to be positively correlated with the extent of eroded area in Communal Lands. Dambo wetlands are particularly vulnerable to this population pressure as they are isolated wet areas supporting plant growth during the six to eight months of the dry season. In Zimbabwe, they cover 1.3 million hectares of the country. This study examines the plant composition and seed bank of these wetlands and compares vegetation in dambos with contrasting land-use histories, communal versus commercial. Communal Lands are …

By engaging in the artistic processes of printmaking and photography, I am attempting to formulate visual images that evoke a sense of connection between human beings and the natural world. This thesis explores the way that I have incorporated ideas from the Deep Ecology movement in literature to create works of art that present a paradigm based on the interconnectedness of all life as opposed to the domination of nature by man. The focus of this examination was my own garden. The use of formal elements such as geometric forms, scale and repetition to convey the sacred aspects of this …

The Effects Of Small Population Size, Breeding System, And Gene Flow On Fruit And Seed Production In American Ginseng (Panax Quinquefolius L., Araliaceae)., Erin Elizabeth Hackney Jan 1999

The Effects Of Small Population Size, Breeding System, And Gene Flow On Fruit And Seed Production In American Ginseng (Panax Quinquefolius L., Araliaceae)., Erin Elizabeth Hackney

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Harvesting of wild American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) has lowered natural population sizes. Accurate assessment of extinction risks necessitates an understanding of the demographic consequences of small populations. I experimentally tested for reproductive limitation of plants in small populations (a form of the Allee effect). I found that fruit production per plant significantly declines in small populations, suggesting mate-limitation of seed set despite the ability of ginseng to self-pollinate. A detailed breeding system study was then carried out, demonstrating that both selfing and outcrossing contribute to seed production. A third study examined the spatial extent of pollen flow in an …

Effect Of Maturity And Divalent Salts On Quality Of Low-Fat, Low-Sodium Restructured Beef., Sharon L. Pojedinec

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Manipulation of product formulation protocols and ingredients to optimize texture development and processing yields provides opportunity to produce high quality, low sodium, low-fat restructured beef. The objective of this experiment was to determine effect of preblending with MgCl2 and/or CaCl2 on functionality of A- and C-maturity, in low-sodium, low-fat restructured beef. Addition of CaCl2 decreased (p< 0.001) raw and cooked pH. For both maturities, raw products with CaCl2 had more soluble protein (p< 0.05) than products without CaCl2. C-maturity products contained more soluble myosin (p< 0.10) than A-maturity products. In C-maturity treatments, MgCl2 increased (p< 0.005) myosin solubility. Products with CaCl2 decreased (p< 0.01) actin solubility. In A-maturity products, MgCl2 had less (p< 0.05) soluble actin than treatments without MgCl2. In C-maturity products, MgCl2 contained more (p< 0.05) soluble actin than treatments without MgCl2. Addition of CaCl2 decreased (p< 0.005) cook yield and addition of MgCl2 increased (p< 0.005) cook yield. In C-maturity products, treatments without CaCl2 had a higher (p< 0.0005) peak force than treatments without CaCl2 in A maturity products. In A-maturity products, treatments without MgCl2 had lower (p< 0.005) peak force than the same treatment in C-maturity products and lower (p< 0.05) than MgCl2 containing treatments. C-maturity products were more cohesive (p< 0.08) than A-maturity. Addition of CaCl2 increased (p< 0.05) cohesiveness and added MgCl2 decreased (p< 0.05) cohesiveness. Addition of MgCl2 and CaCl2 and beef maturity affect protein-water interactions and texture development of low-sodium, low-fat restructured beef.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Following the legacies of two saints, Patrick and Brendan, The Hidden Child explores the fictionalized ramifications of Christianity upon eighth century Iceland. The indigenous culture of Iceland--the Hidden People, Eve’s other children--struggles with an Irish monastery and its religion which asks its followers to change, a change with which not all of the Hidden People are comfortable. Caught within this struggle is an ex-Roman soldier, Basil, two hundred years old and unchanging, who saves a child--who is half Hidden. During the conflict, Basil--along with one of the Hidden People, Caligo--discovers Cromm Cruac, the ancient fertility god of Ireland, banished by …

A Comparison Of Dental And Skeletal Changes Between Rapid Palatal Expansion And Nickel Titanium Palatal Expansion., Christopher Ciambotti Jan 1999

A Comparison Of Dental And Skeletal Changes Between Rapid Palatal Expansion And Nickel Titanium Palatal Expansion., Christopher Ciambotti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Expansion of the maxilla is used to correct skeletal and dental transverse discrepancies between the maxilla and mandible. These discrepancies are corrected through a combination of skeletal expansion (separation of the maxillary midpalatal suture) and dental expansion ( lateral tipping of the maxillary posterior teeth). A recently introduced temperature-activated, nickel titanium (NITI) palatal expander is claimed to produce a light, continuous force which is capable of expanding the maxilla and correcting molar rotations. The skeletal and dental effects of the NITI expander on the maxilla have not been scientifically evaluated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare …

A Gis Design For Honeybee Management Prototype And Assessment., Jesse Peter Bellavance Jan 1999

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this thesis project is to design and develop a Geographic Information System (GIS) operation for the primary purpose of managing apiary site information by the state honeybee inspector for West Virginia. Presently, information related to each apiary site is recorded through the use of registration forms, which are mailed and later stored in file cabinets. At this point the flow of information concerning the practice of beekeeping is stymied. Using these filed registration forms as a useful database of information is unwieldy, if not impossible. The purpose of this study is to determine whether a GIS system …

The Development Of A Benchtop Composting Reactor For Bioremediation Of Pesticides., Christopher Edward Prigge Jan 1999

The Development Of A Benchtop Composting Reactor For Bioremediation Of Pesticides., Christopher Edward Prigge

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There has been an increased interest in composting because of the benefits provided to both farmer and industry. These benefits include reductions in pesticides, water pollutants such as nitrogen in water runoff, volume reductions of manure and other waste products, a reduction in harmful pathogens, and cost reductions associated with normal disposal methods. With local, state, and national regulations becoming stricter on how waste is disposed of, it is obvious that composting is the best and most cost effective alternative. Once the compost is completely cured it can be sold to cover expenses of equipment, and laborers. Often, if done …

The Effects Of Thinning Intensity On Snag And Cavity Tree Abundance In An Appalachian Hardwood Stand., Aaron T. Graves

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Traditional silvicultural practices focus on manipulating forest vegetation structure for commodity production. Structural features important to wildlife, such as snags, trees with decay, and cavity trees are also affected by forest management, but these effects are often not quantified. This study measured the effects of different thinning intensities (45, 60, 75% residual relative densities, and uncut controls), heartwood decay resistance (resistant, slight), and time of formation (pre or post-treatment) on the density, basal area, and volume of snags and decayed wood in an Appalachian hardwood stand. Cavity trees considered useful to local woodpecker species were also measured. Results indicated that …

Occupational exposure to crystalline silica has been associated with lung damage and fibrosis. Although previous studies have demonstrated that silica induces apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo, its role in the pathogenesis of silicosis remains unknown. The purpose of the present study was to: 1) characterize silica-induced apoptosis in vitro; 2) establish a temporal relationship between silica exposure, the induction of apoptosis, and lung inflammation/damage; and 3) investigate the role of apoptosis in the differential susceptibilities of two mouse strains to silica. First, experiments were undertaken to characterize the apoptotic response of rat alveolar macrophages in vitro. Primary alveolar …

Gene Expression Of Components Of The Calpain System: M-Calpain, μ-Calpain And Calpastatin In Male And Female Broiler Skeletal Muscle., Anitha Cholayil Janardhanan Jan 1999

Gene Expression Of Components Of The Calpain System: M-Calpain, μ-Calpain And Calpastatin In Male And Female Broiler Skeletal Muscle., Anitha Cholayil Janardhanan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Muscle growth is regulated by the balance between the two opposing processes of protein synthesis and protein degradation. The calpain system consisting of two ubiquitous proteolytic enzymes m-calpain, µ-calpain and calpastatin (their endogenous inhibitor) is considered to be the major proteolytic system that catalyzes the initiation of myofibrillar protein degradation in muscle. Gene expression studies of the calpain system were carried out in male and female broiler skeletal muscle from breast (pectoralis), leg (semitendinosus) and wing (brachi) in chickens one week through six weeks of age. The RNA isolated from these tissues was used as template for reverse-transcription to synthesize …

Developing Critical Consciousness: Representations Of Race And Gender In Two Afro-German Works., Maren Knebel Jan 1999

Developing Critical Consciousness: Representations Of Race And Gender In Two Afro-German Works., Maren Knebel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Eva Demski and Ika Hügel-Marshall are two contemporary women writers whose works contribute significantly to the Afro-German culture. Demski is a “white” German author who depicts in her novel the life of an Afro-German woman, Afra, as well as the life of her “white” daughter, Nivea. Hügel-Marshall, who was born in 1947 as the daughter of a German mother and an African-American father, depicts in her autobiography her own development from object to subject. This thesis demonstrates that both authors encourage a development of critical consciousness by creating written evidence of a shared Afro-German identity and by expressing the problems …

The Effect Of Diet Dilution With Lactose On The Performance Of Turkeys., Melvin Fungayi Simoyi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

An experiment involving 96 turkeys was carried out in conventional battery cages. The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of lactose on the productive performance of turkeys. Another objective was to establish the optimum level of inclusion in the diet. Birds were housed two per cage from day-old to six weeks old. Diets, containing 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 8% lactose, and water were offered ad libitum throughout the trial. The highest average weight gain per cage (3.79Kg) was recorded in birds on the 4% lactose diet. There was significant difference (p < 0.01) in weight gain per cage between birds on the 4% and those on the 0% lactose diet (control). All birds on lactose diets were more feed efficient than those on the control diet. Diet did not affect fecal DM but caused high fecal DAPA content (p < 0.05) in 4% lactose birds.
