Influence Of Selection For Breast Muscle Mass On Ph And Metabolism Of Supracoracoideus Muscle From Male And Female Turkey, John Kenneth Yost

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this study was to determine if selection for increased breast muscle mass has affected the supracoracoideus muscle's ability to regulate pH during physical activity in turkeys. The lightweight male line (LM) had the greatest breast muscle mass as a percent of body weight (p < 0.0001), a lower average pH (6.68; p < 0.0001), and greater Lactate Dehydrogenase (293 mmol NADH min-1mug-1 ; p < 0.0001) and Glyceraldehyde Phosphate Dehydrogenase (0.4452 mmol NADH min-1mug-1; p < 0.05) activities than the HM and FL lines. The LM line had the highest ratio (2.33:1) (p < 0.05) of adult to neonatal myosin. Hens had greater breast muscle mass as a percent of body weight than males (p < 0.0001), and a lower average pH (6.62; p < 0.05). This study showed that genetic selection for breast muscle mass resulted in an increased ratio of adult to neonatal myosin and an increased anaerobic capacity, which may predispose birds to a lower ultimate pH during physical activity.

Effect Of Sward Height And Concentrate Supplementation On Forage Dry Matter Intake, Digestibility And Grazing Time Of Spring-Calving Beef Cows, Ondieki J. Gekara Aug 1999

Effect Of Sward Height And Concentrate Supplementation On Forage Dry Matter Intake, Digestibility And Grazing Time Of Spring-Calving Beef Cows, Ondieki J. Gekara

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To establish the effect of sward height (SH) and concentrate supplementation on performance of grazing cattle, twenty-four cross bred Angus beef cow-calves were randomly assigned to two SH treatments (4--8 or 8--11 cm) with three supplement levels: 6.24, 3.12 or 0 kg/d. The study was conducted in three periods (P): May (P1), June/July (P2) and August (P3) in 1996. There was no SH x supplement level x period or SH x supplement level interaction (P > .10) on forage DMI, DMD or grazing time (GT). Cows on low SH had greater (P < .08) DMI and GT (P < .01) than cows on high SH. Forage DMI, DMD and GT decreased (P < .05) with supplementation. Grazing efficiency declined with supplementation and advancing grazing season (P < .01). Cows consumed more forage DM (P < .01) in P1 and P2 than P3. Forage DMI and grazing efficiency decreased with supplementation suggesting that supplemented cattle can optimally be grazed at SH < 8 cm.

Forecasting Electricity Demand Using Regression And Monte Carlo Simulation Under Conditions Of Insufficient Data, Kathleen Ann Cullen Aug 1999

Forecasting Electricity Demand Using Regression And Monte Carlo Simulation Under Conditions Of Insufficient Data, Kathleen Ann Cullen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The problem studied is that of a summer peak residential energy demand model for Appalachian Power Company's service area in West Virginia. By restricting the forecast to a region smaller than the state, serious data problems result due to insufficient data to obtain reliable forecasts.;Regression analysis and Monte Carlo Simulation are the two methods used to forecast energy demand. Both methods incorporate risk into the analysis in different ways. Regression analysis yields a measure of the reliability of the coefficients of the variables and of the reliability of the forecast. The resulting forecast and confidence limits of the forecast values …

Preference Between Predictable And Unpredictable Administrations Of Carbon Dioxide-Enriched Air, Carl Wilbourne Lejuez May 1999

Preference Between Predictable And Unpredictable Administrations Of Carbon Dioxide-Enriched Air, Carl Wilbourne Lejuez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Predictability of panic attacks has been identified as an important factor in the development, maintenance, and treatment of panic disorder. Although animal studies typically have found a preference for signaled (predictable) over unsignaled (unpredictable) aversive events, results with human participants have been less clear. Because preference for predictability has a wide range of clinical implications, we examined human preference for predictability in a biological challenge paradigm. Further, we examined the differential effects of predictability as a function of anxiety sensitivity and gender. In general, females showed a significantly greater preference for predictability compared to males, as did high anxious participants …

Assessing The *Discriminative Properties Of Response -Reinforcer Relations Using Concurrent Schedules Of Reinforcement, Josue P. Keely

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The discriminative properties of schedules of reinforcement have been assessed by making a choice response conditional upon some aspect of the schedule that produced the choice component. The discriminative properties of concurrent schedules of reinforcement and the effect of disruptions in the response-reinforcer relation were investigated using conditional-discrimination procedures. In the first experiment, choice components were produced by responding to one of two variable-interval (VI) schedules. Disruptions in the temporal contiguity between a VI response and a choice component were introduced by arranging a percentage of choice components according to a variable-time schedule. Choice responding was a function of the …

Alterations In Intrinsic Heart Rate In Endotoxemia, Peter Drew Wearden May 1999

Alterations In Intrinsic Heart Rate In Endotoxemia, Peter Drew Wearden

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

After much early debate, it is now well recognized that the origin of the heart beat is myogenic, or intrinsic, to the heart. It has been felt that the intrinsic heart rate (IHR) is constant and that the observed heart rate is controlled by tonal alterations in the activity of the autonomic nervous system in response to various stimuli. Some investigators have recognized, however, that the intrinsic heart rate (IHR) can be altered in certain conditions. Sepsis, or the host response to bacterial infection, is recognized as a stress to the host that results in decreased myocardial contractility and tachycardia. …

Regulation Of Glucose -6 -Phosphate Dehydrogenase By Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids In Cultured Rat Hepatocytes, Laura Petrosky Stabile

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The goal of this research is to understand the molecular mechanism(s) by which polyunsaturated fatty acids inhibit gene expression of the lipogenic enzymes. The model enzyme which we are using to study this phenomenon is liver glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD). In order to determine if regulation of G6PD occurred at a transcriptional or a posttranscriptional step in rat hepatocytes, enzyme activity, mRNA accumulation and transcriptional activity of the G6PD gene were measured in the presence and absence of a polyunsaturated fatty acid, arachidonic acid. Insulin and glucose stimulated a 5- to 7-fold increase in G6PD activity and mRNA. This increase was …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Radio telemetry was used to document spatial variation in use by wintering shorebirds at a series of sites believed to form the Lanark Reef Shorebird Complex in Franklin County. Fifty and 95% convex polygon home range estimate for Willets (Catoptrophorus semipalmatus) averaged 0.52 km 2 and 14.85 km2, respectively. Fifty and 95% convex polygon home range estimate for the Black-bellied Plover (Pluvialis squatarola) averaged <0.01 km2 and 0.10 km 2, respectively. Fifty and 95% convex polygon for the Marbled Godwit (Limosa fedoa) and Long-billed Curlew (Numenius americanus ) was 0.32 km2, and 6.72 km2, and 0.36 km2 and 24.41 km2, respectively. Black-bellied Plovers appeared to have the smallest distance between locations followed by Willets, Long-billed Curlews and Marbled Godwits.;Replicate shorebird surveys were conducted on the reef and count data were regressed against four environmental variables (wind speed, tide height, cloud cover, and temperature). Regression results (R2 adj) accounted for 45% and 66% of the variance in total shorebird counts on the Reef for 1996 and 1997, respectively. Shorebird total counts were positively correlated with tide height for 1996 and 1997 (P < 0.01).

Regulation Of Heme Biosynthesis Targets The Key Enzyme Hema By A Mechanism Of Protein Stabilization In Salmonella Typhimurium, Liying Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Heme serves as a cofactor of cytochromes and catalases. It is essential for energy generation and in defense against toxic hydrogen peroxide in nearly all cells including Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli. Indirect evidence has suggested that heme synthesis is a regulated process. Little is known about how heme synthesis is regulated in enteric bacteria even though the heme synthetic pathway is genetically well-defined. This research represents the first report that heme synthetic regulation affects the first committed heme pathway enzyme, glutamyl-tRNA reductase (HemA), by an unusual mechanism.;HemA, encoded by hemA gene, catalyzes the rate-limiting step of heme biosynthesis. This …
