Microbial Ecology Of Freshly Sawn Yellow-Poplar Lumber ( Liriodendron Tulipifera L.) In Two Seasons, Mark Ryan Mikluscak

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Each year, the forest products industry sustains considerable product loss due to a reduction in market value of lumber brought about by microbial discoloration. The current practice of treating green lumber with chemical biocides to protect it from discoloration, although successful, is a potential hazard to both the environment and human life. One potential alternative to chemical biocides is biological control. The most recent success in the field of biological control has been achieved in the agricultural industry by first studying the microbial ecology of the substrate in which the biologically based preservative is to be used. Literature on microbial …

Explaining Viking Expansion, Darrin M. Cox May 2002

Explaining Viking Expansion, Darrin M. Cox

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Current scholarship regarding Scandinavia has neglected to give all but a cursory glance at the factors involved in Viking expansion. This thesis studies and explains employment opportunities, political motives, and societal norms as separate, individual motives that perpetuated Scandinavian migration, conquest, and adventure from the eighth through the eleventh centuries AD. Afterwards, these investigations are used to describe the various and sometimes conflicting forces of expansion that led to the formation of the Danelaw in England circa AD 870. Over time, the eventual adoption of Christianity and feudal relationships within Scandinavia would bring expansion as well as the Viking Age …

Insights Into The Nature Of Retroviral Replication And Infection: Analyses Of Minus-Strand Dna Transfer, Double Infection, And Virion And Rna Dimer Maturation., Que Dang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Retroviruses are a family of RNA viruses that replicate through DNA intermediates by reverse transcribing their genome. One of the essential steps of reverse transcription is minus-strand DNA transfer, during which nascent DNA switches template usage from the 5′ end to near the 3′ of the viral RNA genome. We have determined that minus-strand DNA transfer is homology driven; a minimum homology length is required to align the newly synthesized DNA with the 3′ RNA template to facilitate an efficient and accurate transfer. In addition to the obligatory template strand transfer events necessary to complete reverse transcription, template switching also …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

(Franz) Xaver Scharwenka (1850-1924) was a highly acclaimed performer, teacher, editor, and composer of international fame during the late Romantic period. Overshadowed by the innovative styles of a number of contemporaneous composers including Ravel, Debussy, and Scriabin, Scharwenka's works gradually disappeared from the teaching studio and the concert hall. Regrettably, his compositions, although critically acclaimed in his lifetime, are now for the most part out of print and rarely performed. This study explores Scharwenka's works as a significant addition to the repertory of the late Romantic literature for study and performance. This research project, the result of a lengthy investigation …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis explores the evolution of flourmills in Frederick County, Maryland within the context of the economic and social development of western Maryland from 1748-1789. Western Maryland’s development differed greatly from that of most other areas in Maryland. A large German immigrant population, along with English and Scottish settlers, settled the valleys, of present day Frederick County, during the eighteenth century. These settlers grew wheat and created a need for mills and millers. Economically, mills created prosperity by attracting new businesses and settlers to the frontier. Politically and socially, millers influenced a region often in conflict with the tobacco interests …

Women's Roles In Fairy Tales: A Comparison Of The Portrayal Of Women In "Marienkind" Of The Brothers Grimm And Benedikte Naubert's "Ottilie"., Astrid Munder Jan 2002

Women's Roles In Fairy Tales: A Comparison Of The Portrayal Of Women In "Marienkind" Of The Brothers Grimm And Benedikte Naubert's "Ottilie"., Astrid Munder

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Gender roles have always been and will always be, explicitly or implicitly, a topic of literature. The different ways in which gender roles are depicted in the literature of a given period reflect the political and societal state of affairs of that period. Literary works must therefore be critically analyzed to understand them in the context of their times. German fairy tales provide important examples of this. In this thesis I will examine the literary genre of the fairy tales in order to illustrate how differently female and male authors approached the topic of the woman’s role. To do so, …

Progression Of Chronic Renal Disease In Several Animal Models: Possible Role Of Decreased Renal Nitric Oxide Production As A Primary Causative Factor., Aaron D. Erdely Jan 2002

Progression Of Chronic Renal Disease In Several Animal Models: Possible Role Of Decreased Renal Nitric Oxide Production As A Primary Causative Factor., Aaron D. Erdely

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Chronic renal disease is the progressive loss of renal function that can lead to end-stage renal disease. Recent studies from our laboratory have shown decreased total NO production in patients with renal disease. Animal models have shown decreased total and renal NO production and chronic NOS inhibition in otherwise healthy rats causes renal injury. The overall objective in this set of studies was to investigate intrarenal NO production in various models of CRD and determine if NO deficiency parallels, and perhaps causes renal injury. In the first study, we report that normal male SD rats exhibit age-dependent declines in total …

The Urotsa Cell Line As A Model Of Human Urothelium., Michael Ronald Rossi Jan 2002

The Urotsa Cell Line As A Model Of Human Urothelium., Michael Ronald Rossi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The UROtsa cell line is a unique model of human urothelium with considerable utility in toxicology-based research. UROtsa cells maintained in serum-free medium have several morphological features of transitional epithelium of the urinary bladder including a multilayered appearance and apically located umbrella-like cells that exhibit tight junctions. These cells also have a basal expression pattern of heat shock protein (hsp) and metallothionein (MT) genes similar to that observed in in situ urothelium. To characterize the functional heat shock and metallothionein stress response in UROtsa cells, confluent cultures grown in serum-free medium were treated with a variety of acute and chronic …

The Effects Of Age On The Chromosomal And Physiological Integrity Of Human Sperm., Eddie D. Sloter

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Integrated biomarkers of physiologic and genetic damage in sperm are needed to identify factors that affect male fertility and influence a father's risk of producing abnormal progeny. Offspring studies show a preferential paternal origin for heritable structural chromosomal abnormalities, presenting the need for methods to efficiently detect structural chromosomal abnormalities in human sperm. This dissertation breaks new conceptual ground toward the understanding of paternally transmitted genetic disease by adapting FISH technology to detect human sperm that carry chromosomal breaks and partial chromosomal duplications and deletions and by integrating state-of-the-art biomarkers of semen quality including computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). These sperm …

Differential Reinforcement Of Fixed-Interval Interresponse Times: Effects On Choice., Tammy Renee Wade Jan 2002

Differential Reinforcement Of Fixed-Interval Interresponse Times: Effects On Choice., Tammy Renee Wade

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Eight rats were exposed to a concurrent-chains procedure. Half of the rats chose between a fixed-interval schedule that required low rates of responding in the paced terminal link and a simple fixed-interval schedule in the unpaced terminal link. The other half chose between a fixed-interval schedule that required high rates of responding and a simple fixed-interval schedule. Interresponse-time criteria were based on the percentiles of a baseline distribution of interresponse times obtained for each rat. The criteria increased in stringency across conditions. Consistent changes in response rates as the result of the interresponse-time criteria were not obtained. Therefore, preference between …

An Evaluation Of Double-Observer Point Count Techniques And Avian Habitat Use On The Camp Dawson Collective Training Area, Preston County, West Virginia., Greg Michael Forcey Jan 2002

An Evaluation Of Double-Observer Point Count Techniques And Avian Habitat Use On The Camp Dawson Collective Training Area, Preston County, West Virginia., Greg Michael Forcey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Double-observer point counts are a new method of inventorying avian fauna that allow detection probabilities to be calculated for each point or species of bird. These detection rates allow estimation of abundances that are more robust than estimates derived from single-observer counts because detection probabilities factor in birds present but not detected. The combined double-observer (DO) technique involves two observers recording data together on a single data sheet. The primary observer dictates the number of each species that is detected while the secondary observer records this information; the secondary observer also notes birds that the primary observer did not detect. …

The Identification Of Downstream Effectors Of The Rx Gene And Its Proposed Role In Anophthalmia/Microphthalmia., Christina Marie O'Kernick Jan 2002

The Identification Of Downstream Effectors Of The Rx Gene And Its Proposed Role In Anophthalmia/Microphthalmia., Christina Marie O'Kernick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Retinal homeobox (Rx) gene codes for a transcriptional regulator involved in retinal tissue development, and the protein sequence of this transcription factor has been highly conserved throughout evolution. Previous Rx-knock-out and over-expression experiments have identified Rx as an essential component for proper eye formation. Here we used gene sequencing to identify 2 different mutations in the hRx gene of three anophthalmic and microphthalmic patients. The Q147X mutation, located in helix 1 of the homeodomain most likely prevents Rx from binding to DNA, therefore preventing transcriptional regulation by Rx. The R192Q mutation located in helix 3 of the homeodomain is …

Environmental Justice Through Pollution Prevention: Development Of A Quantitative Method To Assess Community Vulnerability And Air Emission Hazard For Optimal Impact., John Lewis Boettner Iii Jan 2002

Environmental Justice Through Pollution Prevention: Development Of A Quantitative Method To Assess Community Vulnerability And Air Emission Hazard For Optimal Impact., John Lewis Boettner Iii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study develops a quantitative and objective method of analyzing community vulnerability combined with potential exposure to emission hazards. This extends earlier work concerning Environmental Justice Through Pollution Prevention (EJP2) initiatives for optimal selection of facilities for resource allocation for pollution prevention initiatives. A 1992 EPA report indicated that minority and low-income communities are exposed to higher levels of pollution in their neighborhoods than that of the general population. Environmental Justice is a grassroots derived term for addressing these disproportionate shares of negative environmental impacts, which are placed upon people of minority or low socio-economic status. The method developed identifies …
