Using Place Attachment To Determine The Acceptability Of Restoring Fire To Its Natural Role In Wilderness Ecosystems, Eric Paul Turbeville Jan 2006

Using Place Attachment To Determine The Acceptability Of Restoring Fire To Its Natural Role In Wilderness Ecosystems, Eric Paul Turbeville

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study was conducted to explore the social dimensions of wilderness fire management. I set out to answer the question what role does an individual’s attachment to place play in determining the acceptability of management actions directed towards fire? I feel that problems will arise if management agencies attempt to restore natural fire regimes to wilderness areas without accounting for the effects on meanings and values different people attach to landscapes. I used a qualitative method and conducted guided interviews with 27 people from three different groups: (1) fire and wilderness management personnel from the Bitterroot National Forest, (2) residents …

Alaskan Eskimo And Polynesian Island Population Skeletal Anatomy: The "Pacific Paradox" Revisited Through Surface Area To Body Mass Comparisons, Wendy Nicole Leach Jan 2006

Alaskan Eskimo And Polynesian Island Population Skeletal Anatomy: The "Pacific Paradox" Revisited Through Surface Area To Body Mass Comparisons, Wendy Nicole Leach

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This project is an attempt to re-examine the “Pacific Paradox”, as proposed by Philip Houghton (1996), through various morphological measurements on two climatically different populations, Alaskan Eskimo and Pacific Island groups. The “Pacific Paradox” has been widely discussed, but research using direct comparisons between this Pacific population and cold climate groups has received little attention. The methods employed are those preformed by Ruff (1994), Ruff et al (1991, 2004, 2005) and Houghton (1996) to create the most accurate determination of overall body form in both populations. Eight measurements were used to construct variables to create an accurate portrayal of overall …

Risk-Sensitive Foraging In Humans Budgeting Time: Correlated With Real-World Financial Situation, Stephanie Carsten Kucera Jan 2006

Risk-Sensitive Foraging In Humans Budgeting Time: Correlated With Real-World Financial Situation, Stephanie Carsten Kucera

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Foraging theory has been studied extensively in non-human animals. Using models developed through animal-study, researchers have recently begun to examine how humans make decisions with regard to resource-expenditure. Using a computer-based task, the proposed study investigated risk-sensitive decision-making, in humans. Participants were asked to "spend" a most valuable resource, time, in order to complete a computer-based task. Participants were asked to choose between two computer-generated selection boxes, each yielding a different delay-value. However, participants were given different feedback as to how each session progressed (i.e. whether ahead or behind) depending on the budget condition to which he was assigned. It …

Addressing Contaminants In Traditional Foods In Alaska: Environmental Justice Framing And Policy Approaches, Mary Beth Mckinley Jan 2006

Addressing Contaminants In Traditional Foods In Alaska: Environmental Justice Framing And Policy Approaches, Mary Beth Mckinley

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The transport of contaminants to the Arctic and their presence in traditional foods in the region is causing concern about potential adverse health impacts resulting from exposure to these globally-borne chemicals. In this study, ten stakeholders in the issue of contaminants in traditional foods in Alaska were interviewed to determine how they define the problem, and in doing so, to determine if they perceive that the situation constitutes an environmental injustice for Alaska Natives. The interview transcripts were analyzed using five sub-frames of the environmental justice framework: distributive justice, procedural justice, indigenous rights, corrective justice, and ecological sustainability. The interview …

Monitoring Survival Of Young In Ungulates: A Case Study With Rocky Mountain Elk, Nyeema Charmaine Harris Jan 2006

Monitoring Survival Of Young In Ungulates: A Case Study With Rocky Mountain Elk, Nyeema Charmaine Harris

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Harris, Nyeema C., M.S., Spring 2007 Wildlife Biology MONITORING SURVIVAL OF YOUNG IN UNGULATES: A CASE STUDY WITH ROCKY MOUNTAIN ELK Chairperson: Daniel H. Pletscher Survival of young is an important determinant of population growth and persistence in ungulate populations. Therefore, monitoring the survival of young is an essential component in many research and management programs. The primary techniques used to monitor survival of young in ungulate populations are age ratios, obtained from herd composition surveys, and telemetry studies of marked individuals. Concerns about survival of young and the impact of predators on recruitment have recently arisen because of reported …

Automated Adaptation Between Kiranti Languages, Daniel Richard Mccloy Jan 2006

Automated Adaptation Between Kiranti Languages, Daniel Richard Mccloy

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

McCloy, Daniel, M.A., December 2006 Linguistics Automated Adaptation Between Kiranti Languages Chairperson: Dr. Anthony Mattina Minority language communities that are seeking to develop their language may be hampered by a lack of vernacular materials. Large volumes of such materials may be available in a related language. Automated adaptation holds potential to enable these large volumes of materials to be efficiently translated into the resource-scarce language. I describe a project to assess the feasibility of automatically adapting text between Limbu and Yamphu, two languages in Nepal’s Kiranti grouping. The approaches taken—essentially a transfer-based system partially hybridized with a Kiranti-specific interlingua—are placed …

Rhetoric And The Restoration Landscape: Forest Restoration In Environmental Debate, Gregory M. Vranizan

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Vranizan, Gregory M. M.S. Autumn 2006 Environmental Studies RHETORIC AND THE RESTORATION LANDSCAPE: FOREST RESTORATION IN ENVIRONMENTAL DEBATE Committee Chairperson: Phil Condon Forest restoration on federal land has become the focus of an ongoing public debate in the West. Interest groups on various sides have engaged in a rhetorical contest to define restoration in ways that accord with their own ideas about the use and management of the nation’s public lands. This study examines the positions taken by different groups and considers the rhetorical claims they make. Disputes over meanings and practices have thus far limited the chances for a …
