Year Of The Snake, Annie Hoang Nguyen

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Year of the Snake is a travel narrative and family memoir that details a year of the author’s life as a Fulbright scholar in Vietnam. Twenty-five years after the author’s parents have fled Vietnam as war refugees, the author returns to her parents’ homeland. The author spends 2001 exploring and examining this forsaken homeland. She has three distinct experiences, as a student living with my uncle as his adopted daughter, as a backpacker exhilarated by the culture and land, and as a privileged ex-pat working among locals. Through these varied experiences, I began to see how Vietnam was trying to …

The Role Of Silicates In Interstitial Lung Disease, Francisco Jose Leyva Jan 2007

The Role Of Silicates In Interstitial Lung Disease, Francisco Jose Leyva

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Interstitial Lung disease (ILD), produces disruption of alveolar walls with loss of functionality and accumulation of scar tissue. Asbestosis and silicosis are the ILD produced by the inhalation of asbestos fibers or silica particles respectively. An increase in prostacyclin release after exposing endothelial cells to asbestos has been reported. This study attempts to elucidate the role of lung epithelial cells in the generation of asbestos induced ILD. A cell model to study crocidolite-induced toxicity was developed using LA-4 cells, previously characterized as alveolar type II cells. LA-4 cells when exposed to crocidolite had a decrease in viability and an increase …

The Shield Bearing Warriors Of Bear Gulch: A Look At Prehistoric Warrior Identity In Rock Art And Places Of Power, Melissa Marie Ray Jan 2007

The Shield Bearing Warriors Of Bear Gulch: A Look At Prehistoric Warrior Identity In Rock Art And Places Of Power, Melissa Marie Ray

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Centuries ago prehistoric warriors carved and painted their identities on the sandstone cliffs of Bear Gulch 24FR002. Bear Gulch is the premier shield bearing warrior site on the Northern Plains; in fact it holds the most shield bearing warriors known on the Northern Plains at a single site. Shield bearing warrior consists of an anthropomorph with a shield for a body, a head, feet, and weapons or flags protruding out from behind the shield. At Bear Gulch there are elaborate headdresses, flags, shields, weapons, bustles, and wolf tail moccasins. Many of these elements are only found in the ethnographic literature …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Chilton-Radandt, Tonya. M.S., Autumn 2006 Spatial and Temporal Relationships of Adult Male Black Bears to Roads in Northwest Montana Chairperson: Dr. Elizabeth Crone Roads have direct and indirect consequences for wildlife. Vehicle collisions are a direct cost of roads on wildlife. Indirectly, roads may increase mortality of game species by increasing hunting pressure along these roads. Adult male black bears (Ursus americanus) are the most desirable age and sex class to many hunters, which may lead to over-harvest of this sex and age class. Road closures (permanently closing or seasonally restricting roads) are used to mitigate impacts of roads on …

Role Of Sodium Arsenite In Atherogenesis, Flavia Elias Pereira Jan 2007

Role Of Sodium Arsenite In Atherogenesis, Flavia Elias Pereira

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Epidemiological studies as well as controlled animal studies have associated exposure to arsenic through drinking water with the development of atherosclerosis. In this study, we have shown for the first time that low and environmentally relevant concentrations of arsenic accelerate atherogenesis. The objective of this study was to elucidate the mechanisms of arsenic-induced atherosclerosis by (1) characterizing the time- and concentration-dependent effects of sodium arsenite [As(III)] on the development of atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- /LDLr-/- mice, (2) determining whether As(III)-induced peroxynitrite activates protein kinase C (PKC) isotypes, α and β, in human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) and (3) determining the effects …

Maternal Effects And Sexual Selection In The Heliconia Bug, Leptoscelis Tricolor (Hemiptera: Coreidae), Christine Whitney Miller Jan 2007

Maternal Effects And Sexual Selection In The Heliconia Bug, Leptoscelis Tricolor (Hemiptera: Coreidae), Christine Whitney Miller

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The early environment experienced by organisms can have significant phenotypic effects that persist throughout life. Parents, mothers in particular, commonly determine these early environments. Maternal effects, or the influence of maternal phenotypes on offspring phenotypes, are therefore likely ubiquitous in natural populations. However, the frequency and evolutionary consequences of maternal effects are largely unknown. Here I show that maternal phenotypes can have large effects on offspring morphology, fecundity, and behavior. I theoretically explore the potential for these effects to resolve the long-standing "lek paradox" in the field of sexual selection. I also empirically investigate these effects in the heliconia bug, …

Chronic Low-Level Lead Exposure Affects The Monoaminergic System In The Mouse Superior Olivary Complex, Tyler John Fortune Jan 2007

Chronic Low-Level Lead Exposure Affects The Monoaminergic System In The Mouse Superior Olivary Complex, Tyler John Fortune

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Low-level lead (Pb) exposure is associated with behavioral and cognitive dysfunction. It is not clear how Pb produces these behavioral changes but low-level Pb exposure and learning disabilities have been associated with altered auditory temporal processing in both humans and animals. Temporal processing is used to decode complex sounds and to detect a signal within a noise background, and it is thought that neurons of the superior olivary complex (SOC) in the brainstem play a role in sound detection in noisy environments and in selective auditory attention. The SOC receives a catecholaminergic and a serotonergic innervation from the locus coeruleus …

Action-Oriented Sustainable Agriculture Education: Attitudes Towards Nutrition And Agricultural Practices In Guaimaca, Honduras, Sarah Lynne Potenza

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Agricultural policies and global economic forces negatively affect many small-scale farmers in developing countries, resulting in widespread micronutrient malnutrition and environmental degradation. This study explores the connections between these issues, and the efficacy of using participatory education on sustainable agriculture to address them at a local level. Specifically, it evaluates an action-oriented education and sustainable agriculture program in Honduras, from the perspective of the participants and my own participation, as a means to improve agricultural practices and rural nutrition among subsistence farmers. As in many developing countries, access to land, poor soil conditions, steep hillsides, adverse climatic conditions, and limited …

The Tongue River Bison Jump (24rb2135): The Technological Organization Of Late Prehistoric Period Hunter-Gatherers In Southeastern Montana, Joseph Shawn Hamilton Jan 2007

The Tongue River Bison Jump (24rb2135): The Technological Organization Of Late Prehistoric Period Hunter-Gatherers In Southeastern Montana, Joseph Shawn Hamilton

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Bison hunting has long been recognized as a key element of the lifeways of American Indians of the Northwestern Plains. Bison served as an integral component for food, shelter, tools, and clothing. It is no surprise that the importance bison hunting, as a socioeconomic institution, is revealed in the archaeological record of this region. A study of the material culture, most often lithic tools, found at prehistoric bison kills and processing sites allows archaeologists to draw inferences about the technology associated with the procurement of such vital animals. An investigation of bison jump, trap or pound lithic assemblage can provide …

Probing Isoforms Of The Prion Protein Through Tyrosine Nitration, Christopher William Lennon Jan 2007

Probing Isoforms Of The Prion Protein Through Tyrosine Nitration, Christopher William Lennon

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The prion protein (PrP) has multiple stable isoforms. When PrP misfolds, it aggregates and causes neurological disease and death in mammals. The structure of the non-pathogenic isoform has been determined while the structures of the disease related isoforms are unknown. The nitration labeling patterns of three PrP isoforms with peroxynitrite and tetranitromethane, as detected by mass spectrometry, are reported. Two conserved tyrosine residues (tyrosines 149 and 150) are not labeled by either reagent in the normal cellular form of the prion protein but these residues become reactive after the protein has been converted to one of two aggregated isoforms. Another …

Development Of Fecal Dna Sampling Methods To Assess Genetic Population Structure Of Greater Yellowstone Bison, Florence Marie Gardipee

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The bison (Bison bison) of Yellowstone National Park (YNP) and Grand Teton National Park (GTNP) represent two of only three remaining populations of plains bison that have no evidence of hybridization with cattle. Therefore, these bison are an important source for ecological and genetic restoration of wild bison. Little is known regarding genetic population structure and gene flow among the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA) bison herds. I evaluated the feasibility of fecal DNA sampling for genetic analyses of wild bison populations. I used matched blood and fecal samples from eight radio-collared bison from Hayden Valley breeding group (YNP), and multiplex …

Food Supply Chains And Food-Miles: An Analysis For Selected Conventional, Non-Local Organic And Other-Alternative Foods Sold In Missoula, Montana, Kimberly Spielman Jan 2007

Food Supply Chains And Food-Miles: An Analysis For Selected Conventional, Non-Local Organic And Other-Alternative Foods Sold In Missoula, Montana, Kimberly Spielman

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The spatial patterns of the conventional food supply chain have played a significant role in increasing the amount of miles food travels before being consumed. As a result, this has increased the amount of energy that is required to transport food from the farm to the table. The food supply chain links production to consumption. However, as food-miles increase, this link becomes obscure. The food supply chain can be described as having two very distinct parts: the conventional food supply chain and the alternative food supply chain. Business consolidation, and large-scale production, processing, distribution and retail characterize the conventional food …

This thesis examines the forest knowledge of non-indigenous, local forest users in the Northwest Panay Protected Area located on the island of Panay in Central Philippines, and the opportunities and constraints to integrating this knowledge into local conservation efforts. The research is based on participant observation, interviews, and sketch maps involving eleven key forest users and interviews with representatives from the three local conservation organizations. Local forest knowledge is discussed through three themes: geographic or area knowledge (GAK), forest ecology knowledge (FEK), and tree species-specific knowledge (TSK). Tree species-specific knowledge, particularly knowledge of seeds and germaplasm transfer, was the component …

Lobachevski Illuminated: Content, Methods, And Context Of The Theory Of Parallels, Seth Braver Jan 2007

Lobachevski Illuminated: Content, Methods, And Context Of The Theory Of Parallels, Seth Braver

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In the 1820's, Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevski discovered and began to explore the world's first non-Euclidean geometry. This crucial development in the history of mathematics was not recognized as such in his own lifetime. When his work finally found a sympathetic audience in the late 19th century, it was reinterpreted in the light of various intermediate developments (particularly Riemann's conception of geometry), which were foreign to Lobachevski's own way of thinking about the subject.

Because our modern understanding of his work derives from these reinterpretations, many of Lobachevski's most striking ideas have been forgotten. To recover them, I have produced an …

Negotiated Forgiveness In Parent-Child Relationships: Investigating Links To Politeness, Wellness And Sickness, Jennifer Lynn Geist Jan 2007

Negotiated Forgiveness In Parent-Child Relationships: Investigating Links To Politeness, Wellness And Sickness, Jennifer Lynn Geist

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Upon experiencing conflict in a relationship, individuals have a variety of response options. While one can seek revenge or avoid that person, another option – forgiveness – can repair the relationship and foster health for both relationship partners. In coming together to confront the conflict and move beyond it, relational partners negotiate forgiveness in interpersonal interactions to accommodate face needs. In doing so, individuals must communicate by seeking forgiveness from and granting it to their relational partners. While much research has pointed to the health benefits associated with forgiving, little has explored the role communicating specifically plays in later received …

Energy Flow In A Floodplain Aquifer Ecosystem, Brian Reid Jan 2007

Energy Flow In A Floodplain Aquifer Ecosystem, Brian Reid

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

We developed an energy budget to identify energy sources for the invertebrate community of a large 20 km2 floodplain aquifer, based on biomass distributions, organismal respirometry, in situ community respiration, mesocosm and microcosm experiments, stable isotopes and invertebrate gut contents. The invertebrate respiration scaling exponent was 0.474 (+/- 0.068, 95% CI) across six orders in body mass, which is significantly lower than the ¾ power scaling predicted by metabolic theory. Invertebrate production was dominated by copepods (Diacyclops, Acanthocyclops, Bryocamptus), Stygobromus amphipods, and amphibiont stoneflies, and ranged from 26.9 to 4200 mg C/m3 sediment/year. Production and density showed a U-shaped response …

Protecting The Integrity Of Organic Food In The Face Of Genetic Engineering: The Case Of Roundup Ready Alfalfa, Kristina Joy Hubbard

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Genetically engineered (GE) seeds are central to the debates around agricultural biotechnology, and continue to be rapidly adopted across the globe. At the same time that GE crops increase in acreage, the organic market has become one of the fastest growing sectors of the American food industry. While biotechnology companies claim there is a successful “coexistence” of GE crop technologies and organic crops, many organic producers are already challenged by keeping unwanted GE traits out of their fields. Still, little attention has been given to the role of regulations in the face of organic contamination by genetically engineered material. This …
