Effectiveness Of Stand-Scale Forest Restoration, Siskiyou Mountains, Oregon, Jay C. Lininger Jan 2006

Effectiveness Of Stand-Scale Forest Restoration, Siskiyou Mountains, Oregon, Jay C. Lininger

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Lininger, Jay Charles, Fall 2006 Environmental Studies Chair: Dr. Len Broberg This case study documents the effectiveness of stand-scale forest restoration activities undertaken in the “Penny Stew” project on federal land in the central Siskiyou Mountains of southwest Oregon. Its dual purpose is to 1) define reference conditions and build a site-specific case for restoration through multi-scale analysis of historical ecology (Chapter III), and 2) demonstrate streamlined monitoring protocols that practitioners can use to adapt restoration practices over time (Chapter IV). Discussion of methodological efficacy in Chapter IV offers implications for FEAT-FIREMON Integration (FFI), a fire effects monitoring and data …

A 3-Dimensional Evaluation Of Wing Movement In Ground Birds During Flap-Running And Level Flight: An Otogenetic Study, Paolo Stefano Segre Jan 2006

A 3-Dimensional Evaluation Of Wing Movement In Ground Birds During Flap-Running And Level Flight: An Otogenetic Study, Paolo Stefano Segre

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Segre, Paolo Stefano, M.S., December 2006 Biology A 3-dimensional evaluation of wing movement in ground birds during flap-running and Level Flight: an ontogenetic study Chair: Dr. Kenneth P. Dial The science of animal flight requires the quantification of wing movement over a range of behaviors. Despite numerous studies of avian locomotion, we are only beginning to grasp the intricacies of flapping flight. Birds create aerodynamic forces by manipulating the fluid environment of air by beating their wings. The question remains, how do they perform such a wide range of locomotor behaviors (e.g. takeoff, horizontal, flap-running) with their forelimbs? We measure …

Differences Of Dna-Transcription Factor Interactions Following Chromium Exposure, Kathryn Louise Mintz Jan 2006

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The effect of 8-oxoguanine in the consensus sequence of êB DNA on the binding affinity of p50BD was determined using a 22-mer and a 30-mer double-stranded DNA oligonucleotide containing the NF-êB binding site. The addition of a carboxyl moiety at position 8 on guanine (creating 8-oxoguanine) was observed to change the binding affinity of the transcription factor for the êB DNA sequences at each modified guanine site. The protocol used a p50 binding domain protein (residues 23 to 366 from the p50 protein) and a p50 mutant protein with a single amino acid mutation of the wild type histidine 67 …

How Still The Riddle Lies; Emily Dickinson's Sense Of Naturalness, Jill M. Beauchesne Jan 2006

How Still The Riddle Lies; Emily Dickinson's Sense Of Naturalness, Jill M. Beauchesne

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Beauchesne, Jill, M.A., Autumn 2006 Literature Abstract: How Still the Riddle Lies Robert Baker, Chair Louise Economides Phil Condon The tradition of “nature writing” in the United States draws heavily on the literary movements of Romanticism and Transcendentalism. Wordsworth’s meditative walks, Keats’s nightingale, Thoreau’s pond—these concepts have shaped literary beliefs and perceptions of natural landscapes as much as a writer’s individual haunts or favorite creatures. In a contemporary context, a writer steps down a long, wellworn path when he or she attempts to describe a bird taking flight or the way the sunlight feels at a certain time of afternoon. …

Prologue He was as broken-down an old horseshoer as I had ever met, but by God could he shoe a horse. How he did it seemed to be some mystery acquired over a lifetime of bending over beneath a million horses and mules. And yet maybe there wasn’t any mystery at all. Maybe it was simply that over the course of those million or so animals he’d lost the hesitation and doubt and fear the rest of us struggled with from time to time, and just got shoes on the damn things—though with as much beauty and skill as a guy …

Hegel, Modernity, And Telos In Cormac Mccarthy’S Southwestern Novels: An Inquiry Into Mccarthy’S Philosophical Position, Ian K. Jensen Jan 2006

Hegel, Modernity, And Telos In Cormac Mccarthy’S Southwestern Novels: An Inquiry Into Mccarthy’S Philosophical Position, Ian K. Jensen

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In this study, I examine the first four of Cormac McCarthy’s Southwestern or Western novels. I begin with Blood Meridian and continue with the three Border novels: All the Pretty Horses, The Crossing, and Cities of the Plain, often referred to as the Border Trilogy.

McCarthy’s erudite and sometimes inflorescent prose obscures attempts to decipher his philosophical viewpoint. I examine this viewpoint herein. In order to proceed with this project, I find value in G.W.F. Hegel’s thought, as well as his philosophical architecture and preoccupations.

Following the Introduction, my first Chapter discusses Hegel’s thought and our two-fold concern with it …
