This study investigated real world in-use vehicle emissions using two regulatory techniques simultaneously, namely on-road remote sensing (RS) systems and air quality (AQ) monitoring stations, aiming to provide a full pollution profile from tailpipe to roadside and atmosphere. Two large AQ and RS datasets collected during 2012–2018 were analyzed. The effects of various emission control programmes on the trends of tailpipe emissions and air quality were evaluated. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd On-road remote sensing technology measures the concentration ratios of pollutants over CO2 in the exhaust plume in half a second when a vehicle passes by a measurement site, providing a rapid, non-intrusive and economic tool for vehicle emissions monitoring and control. A key assumption in such measurement is that the emission ratios are constant for a given plume. Photocatalysts based on copper-doped bismuth oxybromide (Cu-doped BiOBr) were synthesised using a solvothermal method and assessed for their ability to degrade norfloxacin under visible light. The Cu atoms were successfully doped into the crystal lattice of BiOBr, yielding Cu-doped BiOBr microflowers with a morphology and crystal structure identical to that of pristine BiOBr. The as-prepared Cu-doped BiOBr showed activity superior to BiOBr in the photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin under visible-light irradiation, which was attributed to its improved light-harvesting properties, enhanced charge separation and interfacial charge transfer. Purpose – Mandating the use of building information modelling (BIM) in building projects has sprawled, but the uptake of BIM in building services engineering (BSE) remains sluggish. The purpose of this paper is to explore how to achieve wider adoption of BIM in BSE. Design/methodology/approach – Through an extensive literature review, the benefits of, barriers to and measures conducive to, using BIM for BSE were identified and classified. The efficient hydrogenolysis of dibenzofuran (DBF) was investigated at 360 °C and atmospheric hydrogen pressure with Co/MoO3 catalysts. All catalysts selectively cleaved the C-O bond and thus effectively transformed DBF to biphenyl (BP) at relatively moderate conditions. A strong promotional effect in the catalytic activity was observed over the Co/MoO3 catalyst with the optimal Co content of 3 wt %, as evidenced by the decreasing activation barrier which was resulted from Co-facilitated increase of active Mo species and acidic sites. The increasing risk of fossil fuels depletion due to surging energy demand has accelerated the search of alternative renewable sources. Lignin, one of the major components of lignocellulosic biomass, is the only abundant renewable natural resource for aromatic compounds. In this work, the effects of metals and process parameters were discussed via the catalytic hydrogenolysis of β-O-4 lignin model compound, 2-phenethyl phenyl ether. The best results were obtained over Rh/Nb2O5 with an overall conversion of 99.3% and exceptional selectivity of 98.9% to aromatic products when the hydrogenolysis was carried out at 260 °C and 0.1 MPa H2 for 4 h. …

In this study, an innovative electrospun photocatalyst self-cleaning BiOBr/Ag membrane is introduced for the MD treatment of dyeing wastewater coupled with post-MD UV and visible light exposure for fouled membrane regeneration. The E-BiOBr/Ag membrane was fabricated by successfully coating an electrospun membrane with BiOBr/Ag catalyst particles using electrospray technology, with the goal to achieve higher hydrophobicity and the reproducible property. Along with the E-BiOBr/Ag membrane, two commercial polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes were tested for comparison. Desiccant enhanced evaporative cooling system is a sustainable air-conditioning (A/C) system which deals the latent load and sensible load separately by a dehumidifier and an evaporative cooler. A LDD-RIEC system consists of a liquid desiccant dehumidifier (LDD) and a regenerative indirect evaporative cooler (RIEC) were investigated. The LDD-RIEC system is characterized by low energy consumption compared with conventional mechanical cooling system, but the main shortcoming is the high dependency on ambient air conditions. The recruited vehicle fleet consists of 15 in-use diesel vehicles, spanning a wide range of emission standards, engine sizes, weight, model year, etc. The real-time emission concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NOx), total hydrocarbons (THC), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2), and the mass of particulate matter (PM) collected on filters are measured and used to calculate the vehicle emission factors (EFs) under various driving conditions. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd The degradation of triazine-containing pollutants including simazine, Irgarol® 1051 and Reactive Brilliant Red K-2G (K-2G) by photocatalytic treatment was investigated. The effects of titanium dioxide (TiO2) concentration, initial pH of reaction mixture, irradiation time and ultraviolet (UV) intensity on photocatalytic treatment efficiency were examined. Complete decolorization of K-2G was observed at 60 min photodegradation while only 15 min were required to completely degrade simazine and Irgarol® 1051 under respective optimized conditions. With the massive consumption of lithium-ion batteries in portable consumer electronics and electric vehicles, proper disposal of spent batteries is of paramount importance for sustainable development. In this study, biodegradable organic methanesulfonic acid (MSA) is investigated for the first time to leach valuable metals from waste LiCoO2 powders for battery material regeneration. Under the optimal conditions, leaching efficiencies of lithium and cobalt are achieved at nearly ∼100% and ∼100%, respectively. Comparison experiment indicates that MSA can achieve better leaching performance than previously reported organic acids (e.g. citric acid, malonic acid, succinic acid, oxalic acid) under the same conditions. The performance of the regenerative indirect evaporative cooler (RIEC) highly depends on ambient temperature and humidity. To maintain indoor thermal comfort, proper control strategy is essential. Previous research indicates that high–low (H-L) control by using multispeed technology is superior to the conventional on–off control in terms of energy consumption and thermal comfort. Compared with the extensive attention drawn by salt solutions, the promising potassium formate (KCOOH) solution which has smaller causticity and lower price receives little attention in the field of liquid desiccant cooling system (LDCS). Lithium-ion batteries have already achieved great success in consumer electronics. However, the electrochemical characteristics of the existing electrodes have constrained their widespread applications in electric vehicles, which need technical demands of high energy density and fast charging. Thus, it is highly desirable to explore high-performance electrodes with high reversible capacity and excellent rate capability. In this study, micro/nanostructured MnCo2O4.5 anodes were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment with the presence of positively charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride). In this study, hydrothermal synthesis of sea urchin-like NiCo2O4 was successfully demonstrated by a versatile charge-driven self-assembly strategy using positively charged poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) molecules. Physical characterizations implied that sea urchin-like microspheres of ~ 2.5 μm in size were formed by self-assembly of numerous nanoneedles with a typical dimension of ~ 100 nm in diameter. Electrochemical performance study confirmed that sea urchin-like NiCo2O4 exhibited high reversible capacity of 663 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at current density of 100 mA g−1. In this paper, molecular dynamics simulation was conducted to analyze the air-solution interface phenomenon of LiCl-H2O for liquid desiccant air dehumidification. Density profiles of ions in liquid desiccant aqueous solutions were plotted along the z axis, and distribution preferences of ions on the air-solution interface were studied. Besides, vapor pressure profiles above the solution surface were plotted, and the saturated vapor pressure was predicted and compared with the empirical data. The principal tensile strength of cracked concrete is not well defined in existing models for predicting the shear response of reinforced concrete (RC) membrane elements; hence, the shear strength of RC elements is generally overestimated due to the unrealistic decreasing slope of tensile stress as the crack accumulates. In this paper, the effect of limited tension-stiffening behavior of cracked RC panels under pure shear stresses is investigated by proposing an analytical model named as the tension-stiffening fixed-angle truss model (TFTM). Four reinforced concrete exterior beam-column joints with open anchorage beam reinforcement, which are manufactured to simulate those in existing reinforced concrete framed buildings, are tested under reversed cyclic loads simulating earthquake excitation. The particular emphasis of this project is given to the effects of the beam-column depth ratio and the stirrup ratio in joints on the shear strength and seismic behaviour of the exterior joints without seismically designed details. Diesel vehicles are a major source of air pollutants in cities and have caused significant health risks to the public globally. This study used both on-road remote sensing and transient chassis dynamometer to characterise emissions of diesel light goods vehicles. A large sample size of 183 diesel vans were tested on a transient chassis dynamometer to evaluate the emission levels of in-service diesel vehicles and to determine a set of remote sensing cutpoints for diesel high-emitters. The Chinese petrochemical industry is facing pressure to meet strict targets of energy consumption and carbon emission reductions. Water pumps are the primary equipment used in most chemical and agrochemical industries sectors since water is commonly used for cooling and heating purposes, but these pumps also consume a large amount of energy.
