The increasing demand for portable electronic devices and electric vehicles (EV) has triggered the rapid growth of rechargeable Li-ion batteries (LIBs) markets. However, in the near future, it is predicated a large amount of spent LIBs will be scrapped, imposing huge pressure on environmental protection and resources reclaiming. The effective recycling or regeneration of the spent LIBs not only relieves the environmental burdens but also avoids the waste of valuable metal resources. In this research, the potential synergistic effect of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) formulas in reducing acrylamide (AA) was studied. Five LAB strains were tested to examine its AA reducing capacity in AA standard chemical solutions with different concentrations. It was found that single strain of Lactobacillus plantarum had the most significant effect of AA reduction under 108 CFU/mL cell concentration. The synergistic effect of LAB formulas was then studied in AA chemical solution which demonstrated some LAB formulas had a synergistic effect to reduce AA. In this study, probiotic approach to reduce ethyl carbamate in (1) ethyl carbamate chemical solution, (2) selected alcoholic drinks: sake, yellow wine and brandy and (3) selected alcoholic drinks in vitro digestion model were studied. Five probiotic strains: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium lactis and Lactobacillus casei Shirota showed the ability to reduce ethyl carbamate. L. rhamnosus (19.81-54.98%) and B. longum (19.25-51.34%) showed significant reduction ability at 100, 200, 400 and 700 ng/mL ethyl carbamate chemical standard solution. Acrylamide (AA) is a food processing contaminant commonly found in fried and baked food products. In this study, the potential synergistic effect of probiotic formulas in reducing AA was studied. Five selected probiotic strains (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum subsp. plantarum ATCC14917 (L. Pl.), Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus ATCC11842 (L. B.), Lacticaseibacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei ATCC25302 (L. In this study, probiotic bacteria as a new post-processing approach to reduce acrylamide (AA) was investigated. The AA reduction ability of selected Lactobacillus strains and Bifidobacterium strains was demonstrated in (a) AA chemical solutions; (b) food matrices (biscuits and chips) and (c) in vitro digestion. The findings showed tested bacteria exhibited AA reduction ability which was probiotic strain-, AA concentration-, probiotic concentration-, incubation time- and pH-dependent. Urea oxidation reaction (UOR) has been widely considered as an alternative anodic reaction to water oxidation for the green production of hydrogen fuel. This study investigates the particle emissions from a diesel vehicle fueled with ultralow sulphur diesel (B0, ULSD) and 5 % biodiesel blend (B5) by a chassis dynamometer test under three driving conditions. Elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), 30 species of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and 10 species of oxygenated PAH (oxy-PAH) were analyzed to quantify the chemical compositions of the collected particulate matter (PM). The emission factors (EFs) of OC were increased with B5 by a range between 39.5 % and 113.7 %, compared with B0. Both fuel blends recorded a trace amount of EC (0.25 mg/kg or less). …

As fossil fuels are constantly depleted, valorization of lignocellulosic biomass into valuable aromatic compounds is of great significance but exceedingly challenging. In this work, the structure and catalytic performance of various Rh/Nb2O5 catalysts were studied in detail via the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of a representative lignin monophenol compound 2-methoxy-4-propylphenol. The best catalytic performance was obtained over Rh/Nb2O5-400 (Nb2O5 calcined at 400 °C) with an exceptional 98% yield of propylbenzene under 0.5 MPa H2, which was mainly due to the cooperation between highly dispersed Rh metals and NbOx species, in which Rh was responsible for dissociation of H2 and NbOx for breaking …

Wetting of hydrophobic membranes is considered to be one of the major limitations that must be overcome to further the development of membrane distillation technology. Low surface tension liquids can induce wetting, which can significantly affect permeate conductivity after the complete wetting of the membrane pores. In this study, a thin conductive hydrophobic polyaniline (PANI) layer was sandwiched between two nonconductive polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) layers by the phase inversion method. The surface of this PANI-PVDF membrane was then electrosprayed with polytetrafluoroethylene to impart superhydrophobicity (water contact angle, ∼160°). A strong earthquake could trigger a large number of co-seismic landslides and induce large amount of loose materials on steep slopes and in the gullies. Under strong rainfall conditions, these loose materials could induce devastating debris flows, which will endanger the resettled population and destroy the re-built infrastructures. From 19 to 20 August 2019, fourteen debris flows were triggered by extreme rainstorms near the epicentre of the Wenchuan Earthquake. Among the fourteen incidents, three of them produced debris flow dams, which changed the course of the Minjiang River and resulted in flooding at different parts of the reconstructed Miansi town. …

Non seismically designed eccentric reinforced concrete beam column joints were extensively used in existing reinforced concrete frame buildings, which were found to be vulnerable to seismic action in many incidences. To provide a fundamental understanding of the seismic performance and failure mechanism of the joints, three 2/3 scale exterior beam column joints with non seismically designed details were cast and tested under reversed cyclic loads simulating earthquake excitation. Photocatalysts based on copper-doped bismuth oxybromide (Cu-doped BiOBr) were synthesised using a solvothermal method and assessed for their ability to degrade norfloxacin under visible light. The Cu atoms were successfully doped into the crystal lattice of BiOBr, yielding Cu-doped BiOBr microflowers with a morphology and crystal structure identical to that of pristine BiOBr. The as-prepared Cu-doped BiOBr showed activity superior to BiOBr in the photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin under visible-light irradiation, which was attributed to its improved light-harvesting properties, enhanced charge separation and interfacial charge transfer. © 2020 The Authors Phthalates are commonly used in plastic products in daily life. The endocrine-disrupting effects of phthalates have been widely reported. Accumulating evidence from human cohorts and lab animals indicate exposure to phthalates might impair neurodevelopment. However, the direct causal relationship and mechanism between phthalates with neurodevelopment and neurotoxicity have not been firmly established. We found that phthalates (i.e. DBP, DINP, BBP) disrupted the expression of estrogen receptors (esr1, esr2a, esr2b), and impaired neurogenesis in the brain of zebrafish during embryonic development. To control the COVID-19 pandemic and prevent its resurgence in areas preparing for a return of economic activities, a method for a rapid, simple, and inexpensive point-of-care diagnosis and mass screening is urgently needed. We developed and evaluated a one-step colorimetric reverse-transcriptional loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay (COVID-19-LAMP) for detection of SARS-CoV-2, using SARS-CoV-2 isolate and respiratory samples from patients with COVID-19 (n = 223) and other respiratory virus infections (n = 143). This work shows the effect of ultrasmall particle size on enhancing utilization and rate performance of active materials. Three types of NiO nanocrystals with different sizes of 3.36, 6.24, and 7.18 nm in average diameter are uniformly distributed on mesoporous carbon nanosheets derived from corn straw piths. The purposes of this study were to examine stakeholders’ perceptions of the importance of technical English communication skills in engineering and academic teachers and industry professionals’ perceptions of current engineering students’ and graduates’ levels of technical communication skills. Survey questionnaires were designed to collect data from different research participants. The data were subsequently analysed using descriptive statistics.
