Studies have shown that the elderly are at a higher risk of developing malnutrition due to physiological and pathological changes. Several studies have confirmed that older South Africans have insufficient dietary diversity, resulting in nutritional deficiencies. Furthermore, poor and uninformed dietary choices are associated with the development of several diseases and increased mortality. Following the Elderly Food Based Dietary Guidelines (EFBDGs) related to promoting elderly health could ensure that the elderly have an adequate intake of nutritious foods. This paper provides an overview of six FBDGs relating to promoting health and is based on the South African Food Based Dietary …

The study was performed to investigate some changes in physicochemical characteristics and ginsenoside profiles of Korean ginseng after being subjected to immersion in fermented tea liquid (FTL) [at a ratio of ginseng powder: FTL; 1:4, 1:6, and 1:8, w/w] and steam treatments (with and/or without steam). The ratio at 1:4 w/w showed the highest yield of bioactive components and was, therefore, selected to evaluate the effects of steam conditions [temperatures (60, 80, and 100°C) and times (1, 2, and 3 hr)]. The sample treated with FTL, regardless of the steam treatment, had darker color and higher antioxidant activity (IC50 for …

Supply Chain Management (SCM) drivers are the key factors in successful SCM strategy implementation. SMEs with limited resources need to focus on the top drivers to improve performance and competitiveness. The paper explores which driver factors have the largest importance according to the opinion of the top managers of SMEs. Two developing countries were compared which have different supply chain environments mainly due to their geographical structure. Information from top managers of 105 Hungarian and 124 Indonesian SMEs was collected using an online questionnaire. The data was analysed using statistical methods. This study is the first to rank SCM drivers …

This paper traces the genesis and lineage of solopreneur digital ecosystems. These ecosystems, fostered by a digital environment that is infrastructural, combinatorial and servitized, are enabling the rise to prominence of the solopreneur. We theorize solopreneur digital ecosystems as the latest incarnation of systems beyond firm control, with digital platforms and digital marketplaces as their principal enablers. In an effort to compare them from the perspective of the solopreneur, we categorize solopreneur digital ecosystems on three dimensions: algorithmic control, commoditization, and lock-in. Our work contributes a framework that solopreneurs can use to identify ecosystems in which they can optimally invest …

Peridynamics For Quasistatic Fracture Modeling, Debdeep Bhattacharya, Patrick Diehl, Robert P. Lipton
Peridynamics For Quasistatic Fracture Modeling, Debdeep Bhattacharya, Patrick Diehl, Robert P. Lipton
Faculty Publications
Fracture involves interaction across large and small length scales. With the application of enough stress or strain to a brittle material, atomistic scale bonds will break, leading to fracture of the macroscopic specimen. From the perspective of mechanics fracture should appear as an emergent phenomena generated by a continuum field theory eliminating the need for a supplemental kinetic relation describing crack growth. We develop a new fast method for modeling quasi-static fracture using peridynamics. We apply fixed point theory and model stable crack evolution for hard and soft loading. For soft loading we recover unstable fracture. For hard loading we …
Feedback Stabilization With Discrete Measurements Using Bounds On Fundamental Matrices, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff
Feedback Stabilization With Discrete Measurements Using Bounds On Fundamental Matrices, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff
Faculty Publications
We prove a new robust stabilization theorem for systems with time-varying disturbances and sampled measurements, using novel bounds on fundamental matrices for systems with disturbances. Our main tools use properties of positive systems and Metzler matrices. Our numerical example illustrates an advantage of using our method instead of previous methods.

New Fixed Time And Fast Converging Reduced Order Observers, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff
Faculty Publications
For nonlinear continuous-time systems with continuous measurements of the output, we provide new reduced order observers that converge in finite time. The convergence time is independent of the initial state. For cases where the measurements are discrete, we provide asymptotically converging observers, whose rate of convergence is proportional to the negative of the logarithm of the size of the sampling interval. Our observers are based on the observability Gramian.

A brief historical review of the important role symmetries have played in our gaining a deeper understanding of nuclear structure is presented. We then focus our attention on the special role that symplectic symmetry plays in exposing a “Dominance of Deformation” that is observed through enhanced B(E2) rates across the Chart of the Nuclides, and in addition, we will show how the No-Core Symplectic Shell Model (NC-SpSM) seems to emerges from a Symplectic Effective Field Theory (Sp-EFT), where the latter prepares a path forward for potentially gaining a truly ab initio understanding of the structure of atomic nuclei. As space …

Does Hand-Dominance Matter In Non-Standard Visuomotor Transformations?, Briasha D. Jones, Arend W.A. Van Gemmert, Marc Dalecki
Faculty Publications
Previous nonstandard visuomotor transformation studies using variations of eye-hand coupling and decoupling tasks focused on dominant hand use. The present study expanded this work by including the non-dominant hand. Twenty-four right-hand dominant adults (M = 21 yrs.; 12 females) slid their index finger along a vertical or horizontal touchscreen to move a cursor that was always displayed in the vertical plane. In four different action-perception conditions, the finger and cursor moved either in the same plane and direction or in the other plane and/or opposite direction. Performance differed between the hands only for movement trajectory related variables but not for …
Subgroups Of Right-Angled Coxeter Groups Via Stallings-Like Techniques, Pallavi Dani, Ivan Levcovitz
Subgroups Of Right-Angled Coxeter Groups Via Stallings-Like Techniques, Pallavi Dani, Ivan Levcovitz
Faculty Publications
We associate cube complexes called completions to each subgroup of a right-angled Coxeter group (RACG). A completion characterizes many properties of the subgroup such as whether it is quasiconvex, normal, finite-index or torsion-free. We use completions to show that reflection subgroups are quasiconvex, as are one-ended Coxeter subgroups of a 2-dimensional RACG. We provide an algorithm that determines whether a given one-ended, 2-dimensional RACG is isomorphic to some finite-index subgroup of another given RACG. In addition, we answer several algorithmic questions regarding quasiconvex subgroups. Finally, we give a new proof of Haglund’s result that quasiconvex subgroups of RACGs are separable.

Woodrats (genus Neotoma) comprise 24 species found primarily in the United States and México. The Neotoma mexicana species group reaches its southernmost distribution in the highlands of southern México and Central America. Previous research suggested that N. mexi-cana has a discontinuous distribution, whereas N. ferruginea and N. picta have allopatric distributions around the lowlands of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. However, these hypotheses were suggested with incomplete subspecific sampling near the isthmus. We used samples of N. m. parvidens from the Sierra Sur de Oaxaca and N. m. tropicalis from the Sierra Norte de Oaxaca to assess their taxonomic affinity. Our …

Nutrient stoichiometry and trade-offs focusing on the mass balance of multiple nutrient elements play important roles in the response mechanism of plants to environmental stresses in wetlands. Nonetheless, little is known about the response dynamics and trade-offs of nutrient elements of wetland plants, especially potassium (K), under hydrological fluctuation conditions. Greenhouse experiments have been undertaken to assess the effects of initial water level (DW), water-level amplitude (AW), lasted time and their interactions on the response processes of nutrient stoichiometry of Carex schmidtii. Plant nutrient trade-offs and limitation were investigated under multiple hydrological fluctuation conditions. Results showed that plant nitrogen (N), …

Systena frontalis (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is an important pest in ornamental plant nurseries in the United States. Information on current pest status and management practices employed by nurseries, garden centers, and landscape care operations are crucial to developing an effective research and extension program for ornamental crops. An online survey was developed and administered by the research team in 2020 to gather data on pest status and current pest management practices. The questionnaire included three focus areas: 1) participant (location, industry type, or operating area); 2) pest status indicators (incidence, affected crops, and estimated loss); and 3) common pest management …

Sensing Performance Of Knitted Strain Sensor On Two-Dimensional And Three-Dimensional Surfaces, Yutian Li, Xuhong Miao, Jonathan Y. Chen, Gaoming Jiang, Qing Liu
Faculty Publications
Flexible strain sensors and their sensing performance have been attractive in human motion detection applications. In this project, a knitted strain sensor was designed and fabricated via the technology of weft-knitting a nylon/nylon-wrapped spandex/silver-coated yarn into a knitted garment. Locations of sensor areas were customized to form a whole piece of knitted garment popular for today's applications in elastic tight-fitting activewear. The sensor provides electrical resistance data as a wearable sensing device for detecting body motions. A new method of using a three-dimensional curved surface to evaluate the sensing performance of the knitted strain sensor was proposed. Compared with the …

The state of Paraná is among the main producers of soybeans not only in Brazil, but in the World. However, it presents considerable edaphoclimatic variation throughout its area. This is one of the main causes genotype-by-environment interactions, hindering the selective process as well as the recommendation of cultivars in the state. Therefore, the objective of this study was: (i) to identify the environment that make it possible to represent the conditions of the state of Paraná, in order to facilitate the selection and recommendation of cultivars in future breeding programs; (2) to identify soybean inbres lines stable and adapted to …

Modern whole-genome prediction (WGP) frameworks that focus on multi-environment trials (MET) integrate large-scale genomics, phenomics, and envirotyping data. However, the more complex the statistical model, the longer the computational processing times, which do not always result in accuracy gains. We investigated the use of new kernel methods and modeling structures involving genomics and nongenomic sources of variation in two MET maize data sets. Five WGP models were considered, advancing in complexity from a main-effect additive model (A) to more complex structures, including dominance deviations (D), genotype × environment interaction (AE and DE), and the reaction-norm model using environmental covariables (W) …

In this study, we elucidate the reaction kinetics for the simultaneous hydrodeoxygenation of xylitol to 1,2-dideoxypentitol and 1,2,5-pentanetriol over a ReOx-Pd/CeO2 (2.0 weight% Re, 0.30 weight% Pd) catalyst. The reaction was determined to be a zero-order reaction with respect to xylitol. The activation energy was elucidated through an Arrhenius relationship as well as non-Arrhenius kinetics. The Arrhenius relationship was investigated at 150–170◦ C and a constant H2 pressure of 10 bar resulting in an activation energy of 48.7 ± 10.5 kJ/mol. The investigation of non-Arrhenius kinetics was conducted at 120–170◦ C and a sub-Arrhenius relation was elucidated with activation energy …

Enforcing Inbound Forum Selection Clauses In State Court, John F. Coyle, Katherine Richardson
Faculty Publications
A forum selection clause is a contractual provision that selects a court for future disputes. Such clauses serve two primary functions. First, they may be used to redirect litigation from one state to another (an “outbound” clause). Second, they may be used to extend the personal jurisdiction of the chosen court over the contracting parties (an “inbound” clause). To date, scholars have focused most of their attention on the redirecting function played by outbound clauses. In this Article, we provide a definitive account of the role played by inbound clauses as means of obtaining personal jurisdiction over out-of-state defendants.

Social Issues In The Spotlight: The Increasing Need To Improve Publicly-Held Companies’ Csr And Esg Disclosures, Thomas Lee Hazen
Faculty Publications
There is ever-increasing investor interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR) generally, and environmental social governance (ESG) in particular. Investors’ desires have triggered increased corporate ESG disclosures to indicate companies’ commitment to socially responsible behavior. As pressure for ESG-related disclosures continues to rise, there is increasing pressure on the SEC to support and mandate enhanced ESG disclosures.
Notwithstanding many calls for mandatory ESG disclosures, the SEC has not implemented such a requirement. Instead, ESG disclosures are voluntary. Voluntary ESG disclosures are common, but to a large extent are marred by a lack of standardization in ESG data methodology. The increasing investor …
Interpreting Injunctions, F. Andrew Hessick, Michael Morley
Interpreting Injunctions, F. Andrew Hessick, Michael Morley
Faculty Publications
Injunctions are powerful remedies. They can force a person to act or refrain from acting, dictate policies that the government must adopt, or even refashion public institutions. Violations of an injunction can result in contempt.
Despite the importance of injunctions, courts have applied an astonishingly wide range of contradictory approaches to interpreting them. They have likewise disagreed over whether appellate courts should defer to trial courts’ interpretations or instead review those interpretations de novo. Virtually no scholarship has been written on these topics.
This Article proposes that courts apply a modified textualist approach to injunctions. Under this scheme, courts would …
Nondelegation And Criminal Law, Carissa Byrne Hessick, F. Andrew Hessick
Nondelegation And Criminal Law, Carissa Byrne Hessick, F. Andrew Hessick
Faculty Publications
Although the Constitution confers the legislative power on Congress, Congress does not make most laws. Instead, Congress delegates the power to make laws to administrative agencies. The Supreme Court has adopted a permissive stance towards these delegations, placing essentially no limits on Congress’s ability to delegate lawmaking power to agencies.
In its recent decision, Gundy v. United States, the Court relied on this unrestrictive doctrine to uphold a statute delegating the power to write criminal laws. In doing so, the Court did not address whether greater restrictions should apply to delegations involving criminal law. Instead, it applied the same …
Jailhouse Immigration Screening, Eisha Jain
Jailhouse Immigration Screening, Eisha Jain
Faculty Publications
Within the past decade, U.S. interior immigration enforcement has shifted away from the street and into the jailhouse. The rationale behind jailhouse screening is to target enforcement efforts on those who fall within federal removal priorities. This Article shows how a program undertaken with the stated aim of targeting immigration enforcement has had precisely the opposite effect: it has massively expanded the reach of immigration enforcement and created extended carceral treatment within the criminal justice system based on suspected immigration status. This approach, in turn, leads to removals that lack adequate process, are inaccurate, or that reflect underlying racial biases …

Is The Word “Consumer” Biasing Trademark Law?, Dustin Marlan
Faculty Publications
Our trademark law uses the term “consumer” constantly, reflexively, and unconsciously to label the subject of its purpose—the purchasing public. According to the U.S. Supreme Court, trademark law has “a specialized mission: to help consumers identify goods and services they wish to purchase, as well as those they want to avoid.” As one leading commentator puts it, “trademarks are a property of consumers’ minds,” and “the consumer, we are led to believe, is the measure of all things in trademark law.”
Much criticism has been rightly levied against trademark law’s treatment of the consumer as passive, ignorant, and gullible. For …

We sought to determine whether a shortened version of the 12-item Household Water Insecurity Experiences (HWISE) Scale, which measures water insecurity equivalently in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), is valid for broad use. Using data from 9,261 households in 25 LMICs, subsets of candidate items were evaluated on their predictive accuracy, criterion validity, and sensitivity-specificity. A subset with items assessing "worry," "changing plans," "limited drinking water," and "inability to wash hands" because of problems with water (range: 0-12) were highly correlated with full HWISE Scale scores (correlation coefficient: 0.949-0.980) and introduced minimal additional error (root mean square error: 2.13-2.68). Biallelic loss-of-function MEGF10 mutations lead to MEGF10 myopathy, also known as early onset myopathy with areflexia, respiratory distress, and dysphagia (EMARDD). MEGF10 is expressed in muscle satellite cells, but the contribution of satellite cell dysfunction to MEGF10 myopathy is unclear. Myofibers and satellite cells were isolated and examined from Megf10 and wild-type mice. A separate set of mice underwent repeated intramuscular barium chloride injections. Megf10 muscle satellite cells showed reduced proliferation and migration, while Megf10 mouse skeletal muscles showed impaired regeneration. Megf10 deficiency is associated with impaired muscle regeneration, due in part to defects in satellite cell function. Efforts to …
