Core-collapse supernovae are among the most magnificent events in the observable universe. They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants-neutron stars and black holes-are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion …

We report results from searches for anisotropic stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds using data from the first three observing runs of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. For the first time, we include Virgo data in our analysis and run our search with a new efficient pipeline called PyStoch on data folded over one sidereal day. We use gravitational-wave radiometry (broadband and narrow band) to produce sky maps of stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds and to search for gravitational waves from point sources. A spherical harmonic decomposition method is employed to look for gravitationalwave emission from spatially-extended sources. Neither technique found evidence of …

We search for gravitational-wave transients associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the Fermi and Swift satellites during the first part of the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (2019 April 1 15:00 UTC-2019 October 1 15:00 UTC). A total of 105 GRBs were analyzed using a search for generic gravitational-wave transients; 32 GRBs were analyzed with a search that specifically targets neutron star binary mergers as short GRB progenitors. We find no significant evidence for gravitational-wave signals associated with the GRBs that we followed up, nor for a population of unidentified subthreshold signals. We consider several …

We measured the mid-infrared (MIR) extinction using Spitzer photometry and spectroscopy (3.6-37 mu m) for a sample of Milky Way sight lines (mostly) having measured ultraviolet extinction curves. We used the pair method to determine the MIR extinction that we then fit with a power law for the continuum and modified Drude profiles for the silicate features. We derived 16 extinction curves having a range of A(V) (1.8-5.5) and R(V) values (2.4-4.3). Our sample includes two dense sight lines that have 3 mu m ice feature detections and weak 2175 angstrom bumps. The average A(lambda)/A(V) diffuse sight-line extinction curve we …

We report results of a search for an isotropic gravitational-wave background (GWB) using data from Advanced LIGO's and Advanced Virgo's third observing run (O3) combined with upper limits from the earlier O1 and O2 runs. Unlike in previous observing runs in the advanced detector era, we include Virgo in the search for the GWB. The results of the search are consistent with uncorrelated noise, and therefore we place upper limits on the strength of the GWB. We find that the dimensionless energy density Omega(GW) <= 5.8 x 10(-9) at the 95% credible level for a flat (frequency-independent) GWB, using a prior which is uniform in the log of the strength of the GWB, with 99% of the sensitivity coming from the band 20-76.6 Hz; Omega(GW)(f) <= 3.4 x 10(-9) at 25 Hz for a power-law GWB with a spectral index of 2/3 (consistent with expectations for compact binary coalescences), in the band 20-90.6 Hz; and Omega(GW)(f) <= 3.9 x 10(-10) at 25 Hz for a spectral index of 3, in the band 20-291.6 Hz. These upper limits improve over our previous results by a factor of 6.0 for a flat GWB, 8.8 for a spectral index of 2/3, and 13.1 for a spectral index of 3. We also search for a GWB arising from scalar and vector modes, which are predicted by alternative theories of gravity; we do not find evidence of these, and place upper limits on the strength of GWBs with these polarizations. We demonstrate that there is no evidence of correlated noise of magnetic origin by performing a Bayesian analysis that allows for the presence of both a GWB and an effective magnetic background arising from geophysical Schumann resonances. We compare our upper limits to a fiducial model for the GWB from the merger of compact binaries, updating the model to use the most recent data-driven population inference from the systems detected during O3a. Finally, we combine our results with observations of individual mergers and show that, at design sensitivity, this joint approach may yield stronger constraints on the merger rate of binary black holes at z greater than or similar to 2 than can be achieved with individually resolved mergers alone.

We report an analysis of the planetary microlensing event OGLE-2018-BLG-1185, which was observed by a large number of ground-based telescopes and by the Spitzer Space Telescope. The ground-based light curve indicates a low planet-host star mass ratio of q = (6.9 +/- 0.2) x 10(-5), which is near the peak of the wide-orbit exoplanet mass-ratio distribution. We estimate the host star and planet masses with a Bayesian analysis using the measured angular Einstein radius under the assumption that stars of all masses have an equal probability of hosting the planet. The flux variation observed by Spitzer is marginal, but still …

Stability Analysis For Time-Varying Systems With Asynchronous Sampling Using Contractivity Approach, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Miroslav Krstic Jan 2021

Stability Analysis For Time-Varying Systems With Asynchronous Sampling Using Contractivity Approach, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Miroslav Krstic

Faculty Publications

We provide new sufficient conditions for a generalized exponential input-to-state stability condition to hold. Our proofs use innovative trajectory based contractivity and cooperative systems arguments. Another key ingredient is a new variant of Halanay's inequality, which differs from prior Halanay inequalities because of its use of sampling. Our sufficient conditions allow arbitrarily long intervals between some consecutive sampling times, provided the intervals between consecutive sampling times are frequently small enough. This removes a significant limitation of prior results that relied on versions of Halanay's inequality that did not contain sampling. Unlike standard stability conditions, the upper bounds for the norm …

Caregiver Treatment Consumption In An Experimental Treatment Marketplace, Delaney J. Darragh Jan 2021

Caregiver Treatment Consumption In An Experimental Treatment Marketplace, Delaney J. Darragh

Faculty Publications

Behavioral economics is an approach to understanding consumer behavior by integrating behavioral science with economic principles. Behavioral economics incorporates traditional economic principles with operant learning approaches. There is limited research examining how individuals consume psychological and behavioral treatments. This is especially the case for treatments designed for children. The current study used data from a previously collected sample to explore gender differences in an experimental treatment marketplace (ETM). Experimental treatment marketplaces are generally used to evaluate choices between goods and services (e.g., types of behavior interventions). An ETM was developed to evaluate treatment consumption when levels of evidence differed between …

Stability And Observer Designs Using New Variants Of Halanay's Inequality, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Miroslav Krstic

Faculty Publications

We provide a generalization of Halanay's inequality, where the decay rate is constant but the gain multiplying the delayed term is time varying. While the usual Halanay's conditions require the decay rate to be strictly larger than an upper bound on the gain, our less restrictive results allow times when the gain can exceed the decay rate. This allows us to prove asymptotic stability in significant cases that were not amenable to previous Lyapunov function constructions, and in cases that violate the contraction requirement that was needed to prove asymptotic stability in previous trajectory based results. We apply our work …

© 2021 American Chemical Society. We investigated the influence of an n-alkyl-PEO polymer on the structure and dynamics of phospholipid vesicles. Multilayer formation and about a 9% increase in the size in vesicles were observed by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and small-angle neutron/X-ray scattering (SANS/SAXS). The results indicate a change in the lamellar structure of the vesicles by a partial disruption caused by polymer chains, which seems to correlate with about a 30% reduction in bending rigidity per unit bilayer, as revealed by neutron spin echo (NSE) spectroscopy. Also, a strong change in lipid tail …

A Recipe For Success: Celebrating Faculty And Increasing Institutional Repository Participation, Josh Cromwell Jan 2021

A Recipe For Success: Celebrating Faculty And Increasing Institutional Repository Participation, Josh Cromwell

Faculty Publications

When it comes to adding faculty publications to an institutional repository, time is of the essence. Many publishers allow authors to upload postprints to their institutional repositories; however, faculty do not tend to maintain their postprints for a long period after publication. How can librarians encourage faculty to report new publications in a timely manner? This recipe calls for hosting a reception honoring faculty with new publications, which combines a celebration of faculty achievement with outreach to increase IR uploads.

This longitudinal study examined the relationship between executive function (EF) and mathematics with rural and urban preschool children. A panel of direct and indirect EF measures were used to compare how well individual measures, as well as analytic approaches, predicted both numeracy and geometry skill. One hundred eighteen children, ages 39 to 68 months, were given EF and mathematics assessments twice, approximately six months apart, concurrent to their teachers completing an indirect assessment of EF for each child. Results suggest: (1) the child’s age determines if a panel of direct EF measures is a better predictor of numeracy and geometry …

Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory And His Ideas On Promoting Creativity, Hani Morgan

Faculty Publications

This book chapter highlights Howard Gardner's contributions to the areas of education and creativity. It includes an introductory section on his background and accomplishments. The chapter focuses on his theory of multiple intelligences, Gardner's best-known theory, and provides details on how he got the idea for this theory. It offers an explanation of this theory and the implications it has for educators. His theory of human intelligence contradicts the view that there is one type of intelligence that could be measured by standardized tests. Gardner first described seven intelligences and later added an eighth. The chapter also focuses on Gardner's …

New Symmetry-Adapted Ab Initio Approach To Nuclear Reactions For Intermediate-Mass Nuclei, Alexis Mercenne, Kristina D. Launey, Jutta E. Escher, Tomas Dytrych, Jerry P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

With a view toward describing reactions of intermediate-mass nuclei from first principles, we present first results for the norm and Hamiltonian overlaps (kernels) for the p-α, p-16O, and p-20Ne cluster systems using realistic nucleon–nucleon interactions. This is achieved in the framework of a new ab initio approach that combines the symmetry-adapted no-core shell model (SA-NCSM) with the resonating group method (RGM). In this model, a physically relevant basis based on the SU(3) symmetry is used. The structure of the clusters is provided by the ab initio SA-NCSM, which enables the description of spatially enhanced nuclear configurations and heavier nuclei, by …

Distinguishing Relational Turbulence, Marital Satisfaction, And Parenting Stress As Predictors Of Ineffective Arguing Among Parents Of Children With Autism, Kellie St Cyr Brisini, Denise Haunani Solomon

Faculty Publications

Relational turbulence theory suggests that relational turbulence causes pervasive patterns of dysfunctional communication in romantic relationships, such as an inability to resolve conflicts. Other research traditions link marital conflict to marital satisfaction and also exposure to stress. This study assesses the discriminant validity of relational turbulence by examining its association with reports of ineffective arguing, above and beyond the associations with marital satisfaction and parenting stress. The study tests the theoretical claims within the high stress context of parents raising children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Married, parents of children with ASD (N = 298) completed measures of parenting stress …

Faculty Publications

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been widely applied in industries for its low cost, nontoxicity, biodegradability, and renewable advantages. However, its unstable structure may not meet some strong physical and mechanical needs. In order to enhance the performances of the PVA film, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), tannic acid (TA), and chitosan (CS), working as a reinforcer, a crosslinker, and an antimicrobial agent, respectively, were introduced into the PVA matrix. The results indicated that CNCs, TA, and CS were evenly distributed and cohesively incorporated within the PVA matrix, which contributed to the good mechanical properties and thermal stabilities of biocomposite PVA films. Besides, …

Going Feminine: Identifying How And When Female Candidates Emphasize Feminine And Masculine Traits On The Campaign Trail, Nichole M. Bauer, Martina Santia

Faculty Publications

Female candidates face a messaging challenge. There is a strong association between masculinity and political leadership. Stressing masculinity can result in a likability backlash for female candidates often seen as lacking feminine qualities, such as warmth. Preventing a likability backlash by highlighting feminine qualities can also harm female candidates. Current scholarship offers conflicting conclusions about how female candidates balance these gendered challenges. We fill this empirical and theoretical gap with a trait-balancing theory clarifying how and when female candidates use feminine and masculine traits to manage competing expectations. We use original data merging information on candidate advertising strategies across three …

Populations are more effectively managed with information on breeding and dispersal behavior, making the evaluation of these characteristics essential for effective conservation of a species. In the USA, 2 critical habitat units were designated in 2009 for the federally endangered smalltooth sawfish Pristis pectinata. Previous research in the Charlotte Harbor Estuary Unit (CHEU) of critical habitat shows that female smalltooth sawfish are polyandrous and highly philopatric to nursery grounds. However, these characteristics have not yet been examined in a larger area of designated critical habitat: the Ten Thousand Islands/Everglades Unit (TTIEU). We used microsatellite genotypes from 214 juvenile smalltooth sawfish …

Agronomic And Environmental Performance Of Biochar Amendment In Alluvial Soils Under Subtropical Sugarcane Production, Negar Tafti, Jim Wang, Lewis Gaston, Jong Hwan Park, Meng Wang, Scott Pensky

Faculty Publications

This study investigated the amendment of sugarcane bagasse biochar (SCBB) on soil fertility, crop yield, and nutrient loss in two different-textured soils under sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) production. Eleven megagrams per hectare of freshly incorporated biochar increased yield of plant cane by 22% in light-texture soil (LS) and 12% in heavy-textured soil (HS). Although the overall yield of the ratoon crop was lower, the biochar treatment produced 20 and 14% higher yields than the control at the LS and HS sites, respectively. Biochar increased soil carbon (Csoil) across LS and HS sites by 15% and decreased the soil C/N ratio by …

Executive Deviance As A Sociopolitical Force In Dismissals, Jeremy J. Foreman, Brian P. Soebbing, Chad S. Seifried Jan 2021

Executive Deviance As A Sociopolitical Force In Dismissals, Jeremy J. Foreman, Brian P. Soebbing, Chad S. Seifried

Faculty Publications

The seminal model of CEO dismissals utilizes four sociopolitical forces that operate together in determining whether a CEO will be dismissed. Missing from the sociopolitical forces of CEO dismissals is executive deviance. We propose the inclusion of executive deviance as the fifth sociopolitical force in CEO dismissals, which is not limited to the deviant actions of the executive, but also the executive’s subordinates. Within the comprehensive CEO dismissal framework, the effect of executive deviance on head coach dismissals in the National Football League (NFL) from the 2000–2001 to 2015–2016 season is examined using four levels of executive deviance: (a) deviance …

Christian Nationalism And Views Of Immigrants In The United States: Is The Relationship Stronger For The Religiously Inactive?, Samuel Stroope, Heather M. Rackin, Paul Froese

Faculty Publications

Previous research has shown that Christian nationalism is linked to nativism and immigrant animus, while religious service attendance is associated with pro-immigrant views. The findings highlight the importance of distinguishing between religious ideologies and practices when considering how religion affects politics. Using a national sample of U.S. adults, we analyze immigrant views by measuring levels of agreement or disagreement that undocumented immigrants from Mexico are “mostly dangerous criminals.” We find that Christian nationalism is inversely related to pro-immigrant views for both the religiously active and inactive. However, strongly pro-immigrant views are less likely and anti-immigrant views are more likely among …
