A shortened version of the final report of a Federally-funded developmental curriculum research project; the publication presents the findings of a workshop (University of Northern Iowa; 1973) for the purpose of identification of job tasks for entry-level office occupations from research-based materials. Studies by Lamb (Mary Lou); Lanham (Frank W.); and Perkins (Edward A.) were used by the workshop participants to identify job tasks for selected entry-level office occupations. Job performance tasks indicated in the research were the basis for the selection of the following job classifications: stenographer; secretary; receptionist; general office clerk; clerk typist; mail clerk; transcribing machine operator; …

For the past several years; much emphasis has been placed on open enrollment plans involving bussing that enable black and white students to attend schools together. The Laboratory School of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls has been involved in such a program since 1968. As the project developed; the potential for very serious problems relating to racial tension and student frustration became evident. To approach these problems and to promote more openness and understanding between students from different communities and differing cultural backgrounds; cross-cultural group counseling sessions were developed. The Forum Of Conscience: Applying Standards Under The Free Exercise Clause, Paul Marcus

The 1973 Supreme Court decision in Wisconsin v. Yoder reenforced and amplified the Court's earlier holding in Sherbert v. Verner that the free exercise clause of the first amendment requires the state to render substantial deference to religiously motivated behavior in the application of its laws and regulatory schemes. In this article, Mr. Marcus traces the evolving standards of free exercise doctrine and observes that the "balancing test" which has resulted from that evolution requires still further refinement to give religious freedom its full constitutional due. The evaluation of the California Teacher Development Project for the 1972-73 project year reports data for four performance criteria. These criteria relate to the expected behavioral changes of teachers involved in an inservice workshop program in individualizing instruction. One criterion relates to teacher knowledge of individualized instruction (cognitive behavior); three criteria relate to teacher attitude toward individualized instruction. To determine the effectiveness of the 1972-73 inservice program, a comparison group was formed using data from participants in the 1971-72 program. Perceptions Of Personality From Speech: Effects Of Manipulations Of Acoustical Parameters, Bruce L. Brown, William J. Strong, Alvin C. Rencher

A speech analysis-synthesis system was used to manipulate variance of fundamental frequency and a mechanical rate changer was used to manipulate speech rate. The synthesized and altered voices were tested for realism. Synthesized voices were mistaken for normal 50% to 58% of the time and rate-changed voices were mistaken for normal 78% of the time. Additional studies were conducted to test the effects of these acoustical manipulations on the adjective ratings judges made of speakers. Variance of intonation was increased and decreased by 50% for eight speakers. There was a significantrend for increased intonation to cause voices to be rated …

To study the feasibility of carrying out shell-model calculations in nuclei with active protons and neutrons in different major shells, the following simple idealized model has been studied: (i) Proton and neutron configurations are chosen to be (f 5 2p 3 2p 1 2)np and (g 7 2d 5 2d 3 2s 1 2)nn, so that results for the separate proton and neutron basis states to be used in any approximation scheme can be compared with the results for exact shell-model calculations, (ii) The proton and neutron single-particle energies for these active shells are separately taken to be degenerate. A characterization of a class of totally nonnegative matrices whose inverses are M-matrices is given. It is then shown that if A is nonnegative of order n and A^-1 is an M-matrix, then the almost principal minors of A of all orders are nonnegative.

On Improved Wkb (Uniform Asymptotic) Quantum Conditions, Dunham Corrections, The Langer Modification, And Rkr Potentials, Russell T. Pack

An improvement to the WKB quantum condition for the rotation-vibration levels of diatomic molecules, known empirically to give RKR potentials of increased accuracy and to account for the Dunham correction Y00, is derived using uniform asymptotic methods. The role of the Langer transformation in this problem is also discussed.

The effects of an individualized instruction workshop and its related follow-up program on the attitudes and behavior of selected elementary teachers and their students were discussed in this report. Participants were teachers in a four-day workshop on individualizing instruction. The workshop included training in classroom procedures, managing physical facilities, utilizing human resources, and developing techniques for encouraging students to be self-managing. Evaluation methods, questionnaires and observation indicated a favorable change in teacher behavior. The effects of the inservice program for teachers indicated little or no affect on student attitude and independent work habits. (Appendixes of related program material and a …
