Electron Cyclotron Radiation Measurements To Determine Relative Electron Temperatures In A Low-Density Magnetic-Mirror Plasma System, Andrew L. Gardner

Measurements of the electron cyclotron radiation emitted from the plasma of the Alice system were made using a synchronous detection microwave radiometer in the range of 10.2 - 11.6 GHz. Both sidebands were used to sample radiation from two nested closed shells within the plasma. For a tenuous plasma this radiation is proportional to the product of the electron density and the electron temperature. Since measurements of the plasma density were available from other detectors, relative values of the electron temperature were obtained using the measured radiation intensity.

On The Mechanism Of Low-Temperature Termolecular Atomic Recombination, Russell T. Pack, Richard L. Snow, Wesley D. Smith

A simple theory of gas-phase termolecular atomic recombination kinetics is presented which treats the bound-complex (BC) mechanism in a fashion which parallels the Roberts, Bernstein, and Curtiss resonance theory of the energy-transfer (ET) mechanism. The ET rate constant has a low temperature maximum, but the BC rate constant does not. The contributions of the two mechanisms to the low-temperature recombination of hydrogen atoms, with He, Ar, and H2 as third bodies, are estimated and compared. The presence (absence) of a low-temperature maximum in the observable total rate constant is determined by absence (presence) of bound vibrational levels of the hydrogen-third …

Response of field populations of Delldroetoll1lS frontalis Zimmermann to their aggregating pheromone was correlated with pheromone content of dissectted hindgut tissues of adult beetles a determined by the gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) technique. Adult beetles in various stages of feeding activity and reproductive states were used for this purpose. Two major components of the aggregating pheromones, frontalin and trans-verbenol, were found in the largest quantities in emergent unfed females. After 48 hours of feeding, frontal in content of the hindguts was 29% and trans-verbeno content was only 5% of that of emergent females. Continuous bioassays of females feeding in host material …

The key pecking of two pigeons was reinforced with food on a progressive‐ratio schedule, which required an increasing number of responses for each successive reinforcement: 8, 16, 24, 32, etc. When the subject failed to complete the next ratio in the sequence within 60 min, the session terminated. The number of responses in the final completed ratio was defined as the “breaking point”. After the breaking point had stabilized (60 sessions), it served as a baseline to assess the effects of varying doses (5 to 80 mg/kg) of chlordiazepoxide and phenobarbital, administered intramuscularly 30 min before the sessions. Blood serum protein and protein fractions were determined in 265 samples from 62 lactating Holstein cows over one calendar year. Temperature-seasonal changes (cool, optimum, hot) were responsible for significant linear and quadratic fluctuation in serum protein fractions. Serum albumin, β-globulin, α2- globulin, and the A:G ratio significantly decreased as seasons progressed from cool to hot. Further, globulin and γ-globulin both increased significantly from cool to hot seasons. An a1bumin:globulin ratio (.56:1) was inverted. Milk fat percentage was positively correlated with serum albumin percentage and a1bumin:globulin ratio and negatively correlated with total serum protein, and serum globulin and γ-globulin percentages. Body weights of four groups consisting of 355 crosses among the Brown Swiss, Holstein, Jersey, and Red Sindhi breeds were compared to those of 127 contemporary Holsteins at six ages: birth, 6, 12, 15, and 18 months and in first lactation. Least-squares analyses were used to estimate effects of breed groups, year of birth, proportion of Red Sindhi heredity, and breed by year interactions. Year of birth had a significant (P < .01) influence on body weight, but this was not consistent with respect to breed groups. Purebred Holsteins were larger (P < ,01) than crossbreds at all ages. Among the crossbred groups, Holstein-sired crosses averaged 3% below Holsteins in body weight at the different ages whereas Brown Swiss-sired crosses and two groups of daughters by crossbred sires (one group by Zebu × European crossbred bulls, another by European × European crossbred bulls) ranged from 4 to 17% below Holsteins. Crosses by purebred sires were larger than those by crossbred sires, with the differences in body weight significant (P < .05 or P < .01) at all ages except 6 months. The magnitude of differences was greater after 12 months of age and was probably influenced by a larger proportion of Jersey and Red Sindhi heredity among daughters of crossbred sires. Significant negative linear responses (P < .05 or P < .01) due to proportion of Red Sindhi heredity (1/4 to 1/8, 1/8 to 1/16, 1/16 to 0 and 0) were noted for birth weight, 6 and 18 months and first lactation. The effect of Red Sindhi heredity on body weight appeared to be of an additive genetic nature since body weights increased as the proportion of Red Sindhi breeding decreased. © 1972, American Dairy Science Association. Primarily a longitudinal and quantitative analysis of achievement functioning; this experiment sought to identify factors which promote or impair the learning of individual children. The 683 Junior High students were divided into one of eight groups according to sex; race and whether their seventh grade Iowa Test of Basic Skills Composite score was above or below that expected from their Kindergarten Metropolitan Readiness Test performance. The incidence of males and females making unexpected gains (Ups) or losses (Downs) was approximately the same; but a significantly greater proportion of black children made greater than expected achievement gains. A brief history of the integration efforts of the school and the resulting interracial conflict is presented. From this background evolved the cross-cultural groups which are the focus of this paper. Essentially; discussion was used for exploring the issues which were identified as impediments to good relationships within the school; (1) too few black faculty and students; (2) the impact of "Tomism;" (3) geographic location of students' homes; (4) differing interests of black and white students; (5) the need for extra-school interracial contact; and (6) inhibitions; both social and parental; against interracial contact; especially dating. Academic freedom has been blurred in law and in popular usage. Its clarification should enable the Supreme Court to grant it explicit protection under the Constitution as an identifiable subset of First Amendment freedoms. Its identification with the professional endeavors of faculty members, moreover, should reduce the tendency of institutions to intrude upon the aprofessional personal liberties of the faculty even while adequately protecting the extramural professional pursuits of the faculty and assuring them of equal protection in their interests as private citizens. Several arguments have been advanced in support of the President's authority to continue use of the Armed Forces in Vietnam without a congressional declaration of war as provided by the Constitution. Congressional ratification of the Southeast Asia Treaty and the Charter of the United Nations, as well as enactment of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, are often urged as constituting sufficient congressional authorization for the President's actions. Some have gone further and contended that congressional authorization was not a prerequisite in the Vietnam conflict because the President never exceeded his historically recognized authority to act unilaterally in defense of the …
