This is a coaceptual rather than an empirical paper with the primary focus on raising a set of economic issues faced by any authority charged with managing a groundwater aquifer. I will utilize the technique of making simplifying, albeit unrealistic, assumptions in order to establish easily and clearly the relevant economic principles. Some of the assumptions will be relaxed later to achieve greater realism. It is assumed that the hydrologic dimensions of the groundwater system are known and that the management authority has the power to enforce whatever rules it deems appropriate. Measurements of the electrical resistivity of palladium, residual resistivity ratio ∼22 500, containing 1.7 ppm of Fe have been made from 5.5 K to 1.8 mK. 15 Hz ac susceptibility measurements from 1 K to 1.8 mK together with the resistivity data suggest that a transition into a spin-glass state occurs near 7 mK.

Enhanced Nonenzymatic Glucosylation Of Human Serum Albumin In Diabetes Mellitus, C. Earl Guthrow, Mary Ann Morris, James F. Day, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Use of an ion exchange chromatographic method and a colorimetric method with thiobarbituric acid showed that levels of nonenzymatically glucosylated serum albumin were increased in patients with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus compared to controls. The two methods correlated well (r = 0.99) and clearly discriminated between normal and poorly controlled diabetic populations. The levels of glycosylated hemoglobin were also measured in both populations. Several patients apparently in good control based on glycosylated hemoglobin measurements were found to have increased levels of glycosylated albumin. Because albumin has a shorter circulating half-life than does the human erythrocyte, the plasma concentration of glucosylated …

Optical pumping of dye lasers deposits heat nonuniformly in the active medium. Because the refractive index of a liquid or gas is a function of temperature, gradients are created which refract the laser beam. This effect is sometimes serious enough to quench laser action. In this paper, we evaluate the effects caused by optical pumping with a coaxial flashlamp and suggest ultraviolet absorbers and wavelength shifters as materials for minimizing the problem

Misuse is puzzling. Sometimes it cuts off liability and sometimes it does not, but courts have failed to clarify exactly what sort of conduct qualifies as the type of misuse that bars recovery. Generally speaking misuse takes two forms, abnormal use and mishandling. Abnormal use comes about when a product is used for an improper purpose; mishandling comes about when a product is used for a proper purpose but in an improper manner. Under this definition defendants can claim that virtually any unusual handling or use of a product constitutes misuse. Yet courts will not always accept this characterization. They …

Increases in both staff salaries and in the number of personnel per patient have been prime factors in the rapid rise of hospital costs. This is particularly true in the nursing area, which is responsible for the greatest portion of these costs. Limited information has been available to aid hospital managers in the efficient utilization of the nursing staff. This article presents guidelines for determining patient load and a systematic procedure for allocating nursing personnel.

This paper examines causes and consequences of wetland losses in coastal Louisiana. Land loss is a cumulative impact, the result of many impacts both natural and artificial. Natural losses are caused by subsidence, decay of abandoned river deltas, waves, and storms. Artificial losses result from flood-control practices, impoundments, and dredging and subsequent erosion of artificial channels. Wetland loss also results from spoil disposal upon wetlands and land reclamation projects.

Total land loss in Louisiana's coastal zone is at least 4,300 ha/year. Some wetlands are converted to spoil banks and other eco-systems so that wetland losses are probably two to three …

Nonenzymatically Glucosylated Albumin: In Vitro Preparation And Isolation From Normal Human Serum, James F. Day, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Incubation of human serum with D-[6-3H]glucose resulted in the gradual accumulation of radioactivity in acid-precipitable material. Upon chromatography on Sephadex G-200, radioactivity was found associated with each of the major molecular weight classes of serum protein. Purified human serum albumin was also glucosylated in vitro upon exposure to D-[6-3H]glucose in phosphate-buffered saline. The glucosylated and unmodified albumins were separated by ion exchange chromatography. The physiological significance of these observations in vitro was confirmed by the isolation and quantitation of glucosylated albumin from normal human serum. Glucosylated albumin represents approximately 6 to 15% of total serum albumin in normal adults. The …

Spatial aggregation patterns of flying southern pine beetles, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm., were studied using a systematic grid of sticky flight traps placed in 3 beetle infestations. Five methods of characterizing dispersion were compared: Lloyd's index of patchiness (IP), Morisita's index of dispersion (15), the coefficient of dispersion (CD), the slope of

This Note focuses on the Brown court's analysis of the issue of state court enforcement of the gubernatorial extradition duty imposed by the Extradition Act. It examines the court's construction of the Act, as well as the court's initial decision to frame the basic question addressed as solely one of statutory interpretation. The conclusion reached is that the Brown court's analysis is a product of result-oriented judicial reasoning. This Note does not address the court's handling of enforcement of the federally imposed duty nor the theoretical justifications for gubernatorial discretion in extradition of interstate fugitives
