For the civil proceduralist in the United States the most perplexing problems of recent years have been presented by claims of large numbers of persons against large economic interests. A single error in manufacturing design can cause a relatively small injury to each of a large number of consumers; a misrepresentation in national advertising for such goods can have similar consequences; the polluting effects of a single enterprise can be dispersed among a large neighboring population. The result is that the stake of each potential claimant in the outcome of the litigation can be greatly outweighed by the magnitude of …

Cytokine Production By Blue Tongue Virus-Infected Fetal Sheep Cells, F. M. Enright, B. I. Osburn

The migration inhibition of guinea pig peritoneal macrophages by a factor(s) from media obtained from blue tongue virus-infected monolayer cultures was studied. Medium from blue tongue virus-infected sheep fetal cell cultures inhibited migration of guinea pig macrophages from agarose droplets. Medium from control cultures and stock virus did not inhibit macrophage migration. Medium containing migration inhibiting factor(s) in vitro induced an inflammatory reaction in the skin of a newborn sheep. The inflammatory reaction was observed 20 h after intradermal inoculation. The skin reaction consisted of infiltrates of mononuclear leukocytes in the superficial dermis. Control medium and stock virus caused no …

Hatchability Of Bobwhite Quail Eggs Incubated In Various Temperature Combinations., H. R. Wilson, W. G. Nesbeth, E. R. Miller, T. B. Ande, D. R. Ingram

Five experiments were conducted to compare the effects of various incubation temperature combinations on the hatchability of Bobwhite quail eggs. A starting incubation temperature of 40.6 C resulted in numerically lower hatchability. Incubation at 37.5 C resulted in a greater number of pipped, unhatched eggs, and a later, less uniform hatch. Temperatures during the hatching period (22 to 25 days of incubation) of 36.9 C and 38.1 C resulted in lower hatchability than the hatching temperature of 37.5 C.

An Experimental Analysis Of The Effects Of D‐Amphetamine And Cocaine On The Acquisition And Performance Of Response Chains In Monkeys, Donald M. Thompson, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher

In one component of a multiple schedule of food presentation, monkeys acquired a different four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of four geometric forms (learning). In the other component, the four‐response chain was the same each session (performance). Both d‐amphetamine and cocaine, at the higher doses, disrupted the behavior in the learning component; the overall response rate decreased, the overall accuracy was impaired (i.e., percent errors increased), and there was less within‐session error reduction. The performance component was generally less sensitive than the learning component to the disruptive effects of both drugs on …

Methamphetamine and scopolamine were studied in monkeys responding under a multiple fixed‐ratio fixed‐interval schedule of reinforcement. A response on any one of six levers could satisfy the schedule requirements. Variability of response location was evaluated in terms of switches, where a switch was defined as a response on one lever followed by a response on a different lever. Under baseline conditions the fixed‐ratio schedule generated a high rate of responding and a low level of variability, while the fixed‐interval schedule generated a low rate of responding and a high level of variability. 16 stallions were castrated and 30 days later assigned to 1 of 4 treatments: testosterone propionate (T, 175 μg/kg BW), estradiol-17β-3-benzoate (E, 44 μg/kg BW), the combination of both steroids (TE) or control (safflower oil). These dosages were administered every other day for 18 days (low dose) and then were doubled (high dose). Treatment at the high dose was continued for 27 days and the geldings were sacrificed. Treatment at the low dose resulted in concentrations of testosterone and estradiol in serum similar to those in intact stallions during the breeding season. Many manufacturers and insurance companies claim that a products liability crisis exists. This is evidenced by soaring products liability insurance rates. They express the fear that as insurance becomes unavailable or prohibitively expensive, useful products will be withheld from the market and some manufacturers may even be forced out of business. Such critics of the tort system are calling for modifications of the common law in order to give greater protection to manufacturers. A more drastic approach, vigorously championed by Professor Jeffrey O'Connell, calls for total or partial abolition of the tort system and substitution with various forms of no-fault …

How many 24-hour urine sodium measurements are adequate for characterizing a child's salt intake? Can overnight urine specimens accurately replace 24-hour collections for salt assessment? A sample of 73 6tb-8th grade children was taken from two parochial schools in Chicago to inrestigate systematically these questions. Seven consecutive 24-hour-urine specimens were collected from each child. The estimated ratio of intra- to inter-individual variances was 1.94 for 24-hour-urine sodium. Based on this value, eight 24-hour specimens are necessary to limit to 10% the diminution of the estimated correlation coefficient between 24- hour-urine sodium and blood pressure. Can Overnight Urine Replace 24-Hour Urine Collection To Assess Salt Intake?, Kiang Liu, Alan R. Dyer, Richard S. Cooper, Rose Stamler, Jeremiah Stamler

Are overnight urine specimens adequate for characterizing the daily salt intake of individuals, i.e., can the overnight specimen replace the 24-bour specimen? Data from 142 male participants of an ongoing trial on the primary prevention of hypertension were used to examine this question with correlation analysis and quantile classification. Estimated correlation between the true mean 24-hour and the true mean overnight sodium excretion was 0.72. Furthermore, 67% of the individuals in the upper third of the distribution of true mean overnight urine sodium were also in the upper third of the distribution of true mean 24-hour sodium. On A Packing Problem For Infinite Graphs And Independence Spaces, James G. Oxley

In this paper several infinite extensions of the well-known results for packing bases in finite matroids are considered. A counterexample is given to a conjecture of Nash-Williams on edge-disjoint spanning trees of countable graphs, and a sufficient condition is proved for the packing problem in independence spaces over a countably infinite set. © 1979.

Magnetic Susceptibility Anisotropy Measurements Of Coal From The South Wales Coal Field: A Coalification Process Indicator, Brooks B. Ellwood

Summary. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility measurements have been performed on 154 specimens taken from 25 different seams in the South Wales Coal Field, up to 24 samples per seam. The magnetic fabric determined is represented, in general, by oblate spheroids with minimum (Kc) AMS axes usually clustered at a near‐vertical, or occasionally, near‐horizontal pole which is normal to the magnetic foliation plane defined by great circle distributions of maximum (Ka) and intermediate (Kb) axes. The results suggest that the coalification process and variations in rank within the coal field are due to the combined effects of vertical compression and compaction …

During the early 1970's, a medical malpractice crisis was perceived in the United States. An increasing number of costly and time-consuming lawsuits alleging medical malpractice against doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers caused malpractice insurers to raise premiums substantially, which in turn threatened to curtail the availability of adequate health care at reasonable cost. State legislatures responded to the crisis with a variety of substantive and procedural measures intended to reduce the number of litigated claims and the size of jury awards. One of the principal steps taken in a majority of states was the creation of extrajudicial panels …

Perhaps the most important advantage available to a prosecutor in a criminal conspiracy case is the exception to the hearsay rule for co-conspirator declarations. The exception is widely used and is often a significant part of the government presentation. In essence, it provides that otherwise inadmissible hearsay declarations of coconspirators are admissible at trial against the defendant so long as they were made during the course and in furtherance of the conspiracy. The exception typically arises when an alleged co-conspirator declarant tells the witness (often an undercover police officer) all about the conspiracy, perhaps in the hope of attracting a …
