The Effect Of Dam Closure On Downstream Rapids, William L. Graf

The force of flowing water and the resistance of the largest boulder provide a means of evaluation of the stability of rapids in canyon rivers. Field measurements and calculations show that the closure of Flaming Gorge Dam, Utah, has had a significant effect on the stability of rapids in the canyons of the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument 68 km (42 mi) downstream from the dam. The reduction in peak flows by the dam has limited the competence of the river to move boulders deposited in the main channel by tributary processes, landslides, and prehistoric floods. Discusses the British government's introduction in 1861-62 of the Revised Code, under Robert Lowe, tying government funding of elementary schools to annual examination of the progress made by each child in the basic skills of Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic, and the satiric perspective on the debate given by the poet and essayist Matthew Arnold, himself one of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools, charged with implementing Lowe's reforms. Many of the issues about local and national curriculum, state funding of education, the importance of basic or core skills in relation to breadth, and the best means to assess teacher effectiveness have …

Endangered species protection has long been favored by many Americans, who watched regretfully as the numbers of American eagles, buffaloes and other species dwindled toward extinction. Only recently, however, has species protection become a matter of public controversy, subsumed in the more general "development v. environment" debate. In this Article, Professor Rosenberg surveys the federal government's role in species protection, with a special focus on the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Prompted by the much-publicized Supreme Court decision in the "snail darter case"--TVA v. Hill-Congress extensively amended the Act in 1978. The Dufour Effect. Iii. Direct Experimental Determination Of The Heat Of Transport Of Carbon Tetrachloride-Cyclohexane Liquid Mixtures, Richard L. Rowley, Frederick H. Horne

The heat of transport of carbon tetrachloride-cyclohexane liquid mixtures has been determined directly by Dufour effect experiments. The technique employs a withdrawable ''liquid gate'' to create a nonturbulent, sharp diffusional interface. The partial differential equations governing the barycentric velocity, composition, and temperature distributions are solved with a Crank-Nicholson implicit numerical scheme. This allows inclusion of the composition and temperature dependence of the thermodynamic and transport parameters. For mean mole fraction of carbon tetrachloride x1 between 0.34 and 0.55 and for mean temperature T between 295.13 and 296.43 degreesK, the best least squares fit of the data for the heat of …

Water is the primary limiting factor in agriculture in the United States and the world. The western states have gained importance in agricultural production only through extensive use of irrigation from surface and groundwater sources. With the increase in population, these water supplies are facing new pressures for reallocation. Accurate scientific information concerning water availability, behavior, management, and value is essential in optimizing water allocation on farms, in agriculture, and among agriculture and the various other uses. This report is an overview of the physical, institutional, economic, and sociological aspects of the water issue from the standpoint of agriculture. It …
