Variability Of Sediment Removal In A Semi-Arid Watershed, William L. Graf

Field and documentary data from Walnut Gulch Watershed, an instrumented semiarid drainage basin of approximately 150 km2 (57 mi2) in southeastern Arizona, show that 83% of the alluvium removed from the basin during a 15‐year erosion episode beginning about 1930 was excavated from the highest‐order stream. The amount of alluvium removed in the erosion episode would have been equal to a covering of about 4 cm (1.6 in) over the entire basin. The rate of sediment removal during the erosion episode was 18 times greater than the rate of present channel sediment transport. Production of sediment from slopes and channel …

This essay concerns two closely related subjects: the religious philosophy of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and the need for a new vision in Christian theology today. Though it is the second, more ambitious and adventurous topic that deserves the more sensitive treatment, it is rather to Coleridge himself that I have given the greater part of my attention. The reasoning behind this procedure is based upon a fairly simple fact: Coleridge's religious thought is still largely unknown to most people in the philosophical and theological communities. A Model Of The Bromine/Bromide Electrode Reaction At A Rotating Disk Electrode, Ralph E. White, S. E. Lorimer

A mathematical model is presented for the Br₂/Br^– electrode reaction at a rotating disk electrode. The model includes current density-overpotential expressions for the electrode reaction according to either the Volmer-Heyrovsky (V-H) or the Volmer-Tafel (V-T) mechanism and the transport equations including the effect of ionic migration. The model is used to predict current-overpotential curves for various cases of interest. Qualitative comparison of the model predictions to literature data shows that either the V-H or the V-T mechanism, with V controlling, may be acceptable for the Br₂/Br^– reaction.

A comparison of full-day; alternate-day (FDAD) and half-day; every-day (HDED) kindergartens in Iowa assessed instructional time; congruence between goals and outcomes; and principal; teacher; and pupil attitudes. Findings were gathered from surveys of school administrators and teachers; as well as from questionnaires sent to directors of early childhood education programs at the Department of Public Instruction in 13 states and to professors of early childhood education at 92 state-supported institutions in those same 13 states. The hearsay exception for "public records" was recognized at common law and has been further developed in most jurisdictions by statute. The reliability of public records is said to derive from the presumption of regularity and accuracy that attends the recording of events by public officials. As with the hearsay exception for recordsmade in the regular course of a private business, the reliability of many public records is enhanced by the routine and repetitive circumstancesunder which such records are made. In June 1977, the United States Supreme Court handed down the landmark decision in Illinois Brick Co. v. Illinois. Reaffirming its decision in Hanover Shoe, Inc. v. United Shoe Machinery Corp., the Court held that in a treble damages action where defendants are charged with price-fixing in violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Act, first purchasers, and not others down the distribution line ("indirect purchasers"), are injured by the full amount of any overcharge; and indirect purchasers are prohibited from offering proof that illegal overcharges had been "passed on" to them by their sellers.

The historical legacy of the racist social meaning of rape and the consequences of that legacy are the focus of this article. The article, written in 1983, analyzes the U.S. law of rape, its history, and its legacy, from a perspective that is both feminist and antiracist. It examines the intersections and interactions of race and gender subordination in the context of rape, particularly looking at race and gender issues involving African-Americans and whites. It describes how the legal system’s selective acknowledgement of rape has disproportionately targeted African-American men for punishment and made African-American women both particularly vulnerable and particularly …

Congressional Preemption Of Mortgage Due-On-Sale Law: An Analysis Of The Garn-St. Germain Act, Dale A. Whitman, Grant S. Nelson

We first describe the several major types of mortgagor transfer restrictions, and the judicial and legislative responses to these restrictions before the Act. Second, we analyze the effect and coverage of the important provisions of the Act and its attendant regulation. The complex exceptions to the application of the Act known as “window periods” are then considered. These window periods were created by Congress in an attempt to soften the impact of the Act on states that previously restricted due-on-sale enforcement, and are based on preexisting state law. It is often desirable to be able to predict the total current density at an electrode when multiple electrochemical reactions occur there under potentiostatic control. It is also sometimes desirable to include the effect of ionic migration within the diffusion layer upon the predicted total (1) and partial current densities (2). A procedure for doing this can be illustrated by considering the rotating disk electrode (RDE) system and the associated potential distribution near the RDE as shown in Fig. 1 and 2.

An Analysis Of A Back Fed Porous Electrode For The Br2/Br Reaction, John Van Zee, Ralph E. White

An experimental analysis of the Br₂/Br^– redox reaction in a porous back fed ruthenium-coated titanium electrode is described. A mathematical model of the steady-state process is presented. Nonlinear regression of the model against the experimental data gives physically meaningful parameter estimates; these parameters and the model provide a design equation for the porous electrode current as a function of specific surface area, bulk Br₂ concentration, average total overpotential, and the Reynolds number. The design equation shows that the back fed electrode could reduce the loss of Br₂ across the separator and the ohmic loss in …
