Upland hardwood forest types are .by far the most widespread in the United States. Stands of the oak-hickory forest type alone include 109 million acres, 23 percent of the Nation's commercial timberland (U.S. Forest Service 1982) . Many even-aged upland hardwood stands developed on nonindustrial private lands through hardwood invasion after pine stands were harvested. In 1973, half of the hardwood timber in the South was determined to be on upland sites which formerly supported pine stands (Murphy and Knight 1974). Many nonindustrial private landowners passively permit the biologically better adapted hardwoods to increase after the harvest of pines. These …

Soil Response To Clearcutting And Site Preparation In East Texas, J. J. Stransky, L. K. Halls, Kenneth G. Watterston

On an east Texas forest site, clearcutting and site preparation did not change the soil pH. Chopping and KG blading significantly reduced organic matter in the surface soil, while burning slightly increased it. Organic matter showed a positive and significant relationship to potassium, calcium and magnesium. All site treatments increased phosphorus and potassium, with the greatest increase on the burned plots. Calcium and magnesium contents also increased with burning but decreased with KG blading. Burning appeared better than the other treatments for maintaining or improving the soil nutrient regime. However, planted loblolly pine seedlings survived and grew best with mechanical …

Mississippi's Forest Resource Development Pro- gram was the second state-sponsored forestry assistance pro- gram in the United States. It was authorized by the legislature tn 1974 in response to concerns over long-term availability of softwood timber. It is funded by a severance tax levied at the potnt of first processing. Since inception, 152,295 acres have been treated under the program. Severance tax rates were established in 1974 and remained constant until 1981. Costs rose rapidly during these years, and the only way to increase funds for the program was to cut more timber or raise the fixed tax rates, as …

The Federal Trade Commission, along with other administrative agencies, has been especially affected by the current emphasis on deregulation. Some proponents of the free market system view the Commission as an unnecessary and costly impediment to market functioning. In this article, Professor Koch and Ms. Martin review past FTC regulatory efforts in light of the FTC's mandate: to maintain an efficient, competitive free market Although the FTC has deviated from its market maintenance goal, this deviation should not serve as a basis for constricting Commission rulemaking activity. An apparent paradox of the Iranian Revolution has been the tremendous participation of Iranian women in the revolution, in terms of the numbers of women who were active in demonstrations, contrasted to the subsequent setbacks in the position of women in Iran and their decreasing participation in public life. In this chapter, I argue that the great majority of women participating in the revolution did not consider their actions to be outside of traditional social, cultural and religious parameters. After describing the history and current practice of ancillary relief in federal securities law, this Article analyzes the general law of federal remedies and ancillary relief, including ancillary relief in other areas of administrative law, recent developments in federal equity, statutory interpretation, and federal common law, and implied statutory remedies. The Article then examines pertinent aspects of the federal securities laws, including their legislative history and recent judicial interpretations. On this basis the Article recommends both a general approach to ancillary relief in federal securities law and responses to problems of specific remedies. Studies of six 8-9-month-old rams showed that the specific activities of myoinositol-1-phosphate synthase (EC 5.5.1.4) were highest in epididymal spermatozoa, intermediate in testis and lowest in epididymal tissue. The activity per spermatozoon decreased from caput to cauda. The levels of activity of myo-inositol-1-phosphate synthase in ejaculated spermatozoa from four 3-year-old rams and the seminal vesicles of two 3-year-old rams were insignificant, but in pooled Sertoli cells from the testes of young lambs, the specific activity was much lower than in epididymal spermatozoa although activity per cell was of the same order of magnitude. Two experiments were conducted to compare the effects of various feed restriction programs during the growing and laying periods on body weight, egg production, fertility, and hatchability. In the first experiment, Cobb color-sexed broiler breeders were fed one of three grower programs (full feed, skip-a-day, or low protein) from 8 to 24 weeks of age. Two layer programs (full feed and restricted) were fed from 24 to 67 weeks of age. Overall the skip-a-day grower treatment gave the best results of the programs tested. Two experiments were conducted with young chicks to investigate effects of excess manganese, (Mn) ingestion and to compare MnCl2 . 4H2O, MnSO4 . H2O, MnO2, and MnCO3 as sources of dietary Mn activity. Each source of Mn was added to a conventional corn-soybean meal diet to supply 3000, 4000, or 5000 mg/kg Mn. High levels of dietary Mn from MnSO4 . H2O and MnCl2 . 4H2O depressed growth slightly; MnO2 and MnCO3 did not affect chick performance. Manganese dioxide contained less Mn activity than MnCO3, MnSO4 . H2O, or MnCl2 . 4H2O as assessed by relative depressions in hemoglobin and …

An experiment was conducted with young chicks to investigate the effect of duodenal coccidiosis caused by Eimeria acervulina infection on the interrelationship between dietary copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn). A corn-soybean meal diet (devoid of Zn fortification) was supplemented with Zn (50 mg/kg) or Cu (250 mg/kg), or both; these diets were fed to control or coccidiosis-infected chicks. The coccidial infection depressed rate and efficiency of weight gain. Excess dietary Cu had no effect on performance of control or infected chicks. Zinc supplementation did not affect performance of control chicks, but it improved both rate and efficiency of weight gain …

Drug Effects On Repeated Acquisition: Comparison Of Cumulative And Non‐Cumulative Dosing, Donald M. Thompson, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher, Peter J. Winsauer

Pigeons acquired a different four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of a sequence of four colors. The response chain was maintained by food presentation under a fixed‐ratio schedule. Errors produced a brief timeout but did not reset the chain. Each day there were four 15‐minute sessions, with a 10‐minute intersession interval. Cumulative dose‐effect curves for phencyclidine, pentobarbital, and d‐amphetamine were obtained by giving an injection before each of the four sessions; successive injections increased the cumulative dose in equally spaced logarithmic steps. A systemic streptococcal infection in cultured bullfrogs in Brazil was characterized by necrotizing splenitis and hepatitis with hepatic and renal hemorrhage. A non-hemolytic Group B Streptococcus appeared to be the cause of the lesions, and the stimulus for the splenic reticuloendothelial hyperplasia observed in the animals. Stress may have been a factor in the development of the pathological condition.

The most comprehensive description of the West German civil litigation system to appear in United States law journals, a much-admired, practice-oriented work by two United States law professors and a Hamburg judge, was published twenty-five years ago. At that moment, a commission of experts, appointed in 1955 by the Federal Ministry of Justice and called the Commission to Prepare a Reform of Civil Justice, was already deep into a thorough reexamination of the entire West German system. Vitamin A has, apart from its function in the visual pigments, general effects on several organs. Early signs of vitamin A deficiency include keratinization of epithelia and hyperkeratosis of the skin. To elucidate a generalized function for vitamin A, we have taken the approach of tracing the vitamin from its storage site in the liver via its blood transport by the retinol-binding protein (RBP) to its uptake by susceptible cells. We have also examined the intracellular occurrence of vitamin A as regards its binding to specific receptor proteins. Here we summarize data on the amino acid sequences of several vitamin …

Examined the large pogonophoran tube worm Riftia pachyptila, clam Calyptogena magnifica, crab Bythograea thermydron, polychaete worm Alvinella pompejana, and an unidentified zoarcid fish. In general, enzymic activities found in the tissues of the vent animals were qualitatively and quantitatively similar to those of phylogenetically related shallow-living marine species, suggesting that the types of energy metabolism pathways, and the potential flux rates through these pathways, are similar in both groups. -from Authors

A previous report by our group described a cross-sectional association between urinary sodium excretion and blood pressure (BP) in children. Attempts were made to reproduce these findings in two subsequent studies carried out with an identical protocol. Although descriptive results were similar and the correlations between measures of body size and blood pressure were reproduced, a clear-cut association between 7-day mean urinary sodium excretion and BP was observed only in the first of the three studies. These results could imply inadequate study methods, an inconsistent and weak relationship, or the absence of a relationship altogether. © 1983 American Heart Association, …

A population-based survey of 134 white men, recruited from the Chicago People’s Gas Company labor force, was carried out to examine the association between sodium-lithium (Na-Li) countertransport and hypertension. Of the 134 participants in this industry-sponsored periodic health examination, 64 were normotensive and 70 were either taking antihypertensive medications or had a systolic pressure ≥ 140 or a diastolic pressure ≥ 90 mm Hg. The hypertensives were older and more overweight. Countertransport was significantly higher in hypertensives than in normotensives. Age-standardized death rates from all causes for persons age 35-74 fell 23 per cent, 1968-1979. The monotonic decline was interrupted by only one period of excess influenza mortality. In the late 1970s, however, the decline in mortality decelerated and no further decrease was observed, 1979-1981. The recurrence of epidemic influenza contributed significantly to this trend although it would appear that the underlying mortality pattern has begun to change.

Quirk and Seymour have shown that a connected simple graph has at least as many spanning trees as circuits. This paper extends and strengthens their result by showing that in a simple binary matroid M the quotient of the number of bases by the number of circuits is at least 2. Moreover, if M has no coloops and rank r, this quotient exceeds 6(r + 1)/19. © 1983, Academic Press Inc. (London) Limited. All rights reserved.

The purpose of this note is to prove an identity for generalized Tutte-Grothendieck invariants, at least two special cases of which have already proved to be of considerable use.
