Identification Of N Epsilon-Carboxymethyllysine As A Degradation Product Of Fructoselysine In Glycated Protein, Mahtab U. Ahmed, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

The chemistry of Maillard or browning reactionosf glycated proteins was studied using the model compound, Nu-formyl-W-fructoselysine(f FL), an analog of glycated lysine residues in protein. Incubation of fFL (15 mM) at physiological pH and temperature in 0.2 M phosphate buffer resulted in formation of lVcarboxymethyllysine (CML) in about 40% yield after 15 days. CML was formed by oxidative cleavage of fFL between C-2 and C-3 of the carbohydrate chain and erythronic acid (EA) was identified a s , the split product formed in the reaction. The efforts of liberal political theorists like John Rawls and Ronald Dworkin to identify principles and rights based on moral truth as authoritative bases for law and politics ignore the insight of Hume and other conservative theorists that the moral possibilities of human nature generally are limited and are in turn limiting on what can be accomplished, from a moral point of view, through law and politics.

Quantifying Spatial Patterns Of Overgrowth In Epibenthic Communities, David S. Wethey, Linda J. Walters

A method is presented that allows rapid and accurate measurement of changes in the spatial pattern of space occupation in encrusting organisms. The boundaries of organisms are represented as polygons, and geometric difference calculations are used to establish the perimeters of the areas gained or vacated between sampling dates. The influence of interspecific interactions on occupation of space is also quantified: geometric intersection calculations are used to define the perimeters of the areas gained or lost in overgrowth interactions. A method is presented for estimating the sampling frequency necessary for detection of significant changes in occupation of space. The method …

Call a compact Riemannian manifold M a strongly unstable manifold if it is not the range or domain of a nonconstant stable harmonic map and also the homotopy class of any map to or from M contains elements of arbitrarily small energy. If M is isometrically immersed in Euclidean space, then a condition on the second fundamental form of M is given which implies M is strongly unstable. As compact isotropy irreducible homogeneous spaces have "standard" immersions into Euclidean space this allows a complete list of the strongly unstable compact irreducible symmetric spaces to be made.

Capital Gains Exception To The House's "General Utilities" Repeal: Further Indigestions From Overly Processed "Corn Products", John W. Lee

In this article, Lee first describes the mechanics and tax effects of cost basis corporate acquisitions and analyzes why current tax rules favor such acquisitions over carryover basis acquisition (e .g., tax-free mergers); then he describes the House's proposed repeal in HR 3838 of the General Utilities doctrine in current sections 336-338, focusing on the continued exemption for long-term capital gains of a closely held active business corporation. Preemption Of State Law Notice Provisions Governing The Recovery Of Attorneys' Fees By Section 506(B) Of The Bankruptcy Code, R. Wilson Freyermuth

This note provides a framework for courts and attorneys faced with the issue whether section 506(b) preempts state law notice provisions. The note studies the language and legislative history of section 506(b), pointing out the inconsistencies and ambiguities that make it difficult to determine congressional intent. The note then surveys the various rationales advanced by the lower courts in resolving this issue. Using the recent Fourth Circuit case of Unsecured Creditors' Committee v. Walter E. Heller & Co. to illustrate several of these rationales, the note suggests that a more consistent approach to this issue is needed. After examining the …

Aharonov-Bohm magnetoconductance oscillations have been measured in series arrays of 1, 3, 10, and 30 submicron-diameter Ag loops. At constant temperature, the amplitude of the h/e oscillations is observed to decrease as the square root of number of loops, while the amplitude of h/2e conductance oscillations, measured in the same samples, is independent of the number of series loops. This is direct confirmation of the ensemble averaging properties of h/e oscillations in multiloop systems. The amplitude of the h/e oscillations is in good agreement with recent calculations.

Forestry students at Mississippi State are encouraged to participate in organizations that strengthen their sense of professionalism and point them toward continued development after graduation. The Student Chapter of the Society of American Foresters is one of those organizations. Forestry students who take part in its activities are aided in developing communication and leadership skills that are difficult to learn in a classroom. Forestry is not just trees. Forestry students deal with the biology of the forest and the economics of timber. They learn how to use these tools to achieve a forest landowner's objectives. Four surveys of pine plantations in East Texas between 1969 and 1984 indicate that fusiform rust (Cronartium quercuum (Berk.) Miyabe ex Shirai f. sp. fusiforme) infection rates are increasing on slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm. var. elliottii) and either decreasing or about constant on loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.). Currently, stem infections occur on about 1 in 2 slash pines and 1 in 14 loblolly pines. South. J. Appl. For. 10:215-216, Nov. 1986.

Nonequilibrium Fluctuations Studied By A Rarefied Gas Simulation, Alejandro Garcia

A dilute gas under a constant heat flux is studied with use of a Monte Carlo simulation based on the Boltzmann equation. Results for several spatial correlation functions of equal-time fluctuations are reported and compared qualitatively with previous fluctuating hydrodynamics calculations for liquids.

Computers and other electronic equipment now consume as much electricity as electric steel furnaces, and their growth shows no signs of slowing. Utilities are active participants in the computer revolution. Northeast Utilities, for example, reports that 20% of electricity use in a typical new office building in its service area goes to computers. Given the expected growth in computers and computer loads, this technology deserves greater attention from utility planners and other energy analysts. It is shown that the commercial sector has been the largest contributor to kilowatt-hour (kwh) sales growth and that new uses within the commercial sector have …

This Article will analyze these aspects of the Sweatt case. Part I describes the facts leading to the litigation. Part II examines the Supreme Court precedents facing Sweatt's attorneys, both in the area of school segregation and in the field of education generally. This section concludes that the Court at best seemed pre- pared only to enforce the Plessy doctrine, and none too rigorously at that.
