Suppose a lender is asked to make a substantial loan to a prospective borrower. The lender possesses information indicating that the borrower will use the loan proceeds to finance an activity that, although legitimate on its face, is conducted in violation of regulatory provisions. Nevertheless, the lender makes the loan because it promises to be profitable. Later the borrower defaults, and the lender goes to court to enforce the debt and realize on its security interest in the borrower's property. The study examined expressed reasons for choosing the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) by undergraduate students majoring in social work there. Responses of 205 social work majors to a questionnaire found that these students chose UNI primarily because of location; size; cost; the presence of a social work program; to get a good education; to be with their friends; and to continue a family tradition. Other findings indicated that 44% of students had attended other colleges previously; that many students considered other majors before deciding on social work; that 84% of the students had been born in Iowa; that 50% …

Union Effects On Productivity, Profits, And Growth - Has The Long Run Arrived?, John T. Addison, Barry T. Hirsch

This article interprets literature examining union effects on economic performance. Production function studies indicate small overall union impacts on productivity; positive effects, where they exist, appear to result from management response to decreased profit expectations and from a natural selection process. Lower profitability among unionized firms is well established; more interesting is the possibility that unions appropriate quasi rents deriving from long-lived tangible and intangible capital. the connection between unions, investment behavior, and productivity growth emerges as a particularly fruitful line of empirical inquiry, although it does not encourage a sanguine view of unionism's long-run impact.

Comparison Of Ascorbic Acid Content Of Super‐Market Versus Roadside Stand Produce, R. J. Bushway, P. R. Helper, J. King, B. Perkins, M. Krishnan

Seven vegetables and one fruit from two roadside stands and two major local supermarkets were analyzed for their ascorbic acid content. Produce was sampled during a nine week period from late July through September of 1987. Significant differences at the 0.05 level for ascorbic acid were observed between supermarket and roadside stand produce for potato, cauliflower, cabbage and tomato while no significant differences were found between cantaloupe, broccoli, green peppers and spinach from either market. Cabbage was the only supermarket item that was significantly higher in ascorbic acid concentration. Very little dehydroascorbic acid was shown to be present in these …

Because soil erosion affects the quantity and quality of farmland, it is a matter of great concern for both the government and the farm industry. Whereas in the past concern was over the potential damage to productivity, concern is now being voiced over off-site damage and water pollution. There are numerous federal programs set up to fight soil erosion, but they are all voluntary, thereby making it difficult for the government to target funds. The author reviews the seriousness of the problem, looks at the numerous government programs, and then analyzes the Food Security Act of 1985—the first act to …

The Corporate Attorney-Client Privilege: A Study Of The Participants, Vincent C. Alexander

Empirical research on the practical effects of the attorney-client privilege in the corporate context has been almost nonexistent. This Article seeks to help fill the gap by synthesizing traditional doctrinal analysis with the results of a survey of individuals with first-hand information about the subject: corporate attorneys, corporate management, and federal judges and magistrates. The survey, which consisted of 182 interviews in New York City, produced a broad range of information about some of the assumptions underlying the corporate privilege, the forms and processes of corporate attorney-client communications and the adjudication of privilege claims.

Oxygen reduction in a gas-fed porous electrode attached to a proton exchange membrane is discussed. Experimental data and a mathematical model are presented for the test cell used. Various membrane and electrode assemblies were tested at different levels of platinum loading and Teflon® content. The model accounts for the diffusion and reaction of oxygen and the diffusion and reaction of hydrogen ions. Sulfuric acid was placed above the membrane in the test cell reservoir to provide a source of protons for the reduction of oxygen at the cathode. An algebraic model for a parallel plate, zinc/bromine flow cell is presented and used to predict various performance quantities, which are compared to those predicted by using previously published differential equation models. The results presented compare well with previous work. The model is based on the concept of using well-mixed zones and linear concentration and potential profiles for the diffusion layers and the separator. The Butler-Volmer equation is used for the electrochemical reactions, and the homogeneous reaction between bromine and bromide is included.

A one-dimensional mathematical model for the lithium/thionyl chloride primary cell is used in conjunction with a parameter estimation technique, in order to estimate the electrode kinetic parameters of this electrochemical system. The electrode kinetic parameters include the anodic transfer coefficient and exchange current density of the lithium oxidation, a,1 and i0,1,ref; the cathodic transfer coefficient and the effective exchange current density of the thionyl chloride reduction, c,4 and a0i0,4,ref, and a morphology parameter, . A one-dimensional mathematical model for the lithium/thionyl chloride primary cell has been developed to investigate methods of improving its performance and safety. The model includes many of the components of a typical lithium/thionyl chloride cell such as the porous lithium chloride film which forms on the lithium anode surface. The governing equations are formulated from fundamental conservation laws using porous electrode theory and concentrated solution theory. The model is used to predict one-dimensional, time dependent profiles of concentration, porosity, current, and potentialas well as cell temperature and voltage.
