Photoluminescence Studies In Znxcd1-Xte Single Crystals, David D. Allred, Jesus González-Hernández, Elías López-Cruz, Worth P. Allred

The crystalline quality of ZnxCd1-xTe single crystals prepared by a modified Bridgman method with 0≤x≤0.05 has been analyzed using photoluminescence. The spectrum of a typical sample is dominated by lines originating from the recombination of free and bound excitons. Lines due to free excitons in their ground and first excited states are observed in both the pure CdTe and the mixed crystals. Excitons bound to Dc vacancies are observed in the pure CdTe crystal but not in the mixed crystal. Weaker and broader features appearing at energies below the exciton emission range were associated with transitions involving free-to-bound and bound-to-bound …

Landscape Development And Coastal Wetland Losses In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, R. Eugene Turner

The causes of the extensive (0.86%/yr; 288,414 ha/yr) and well documented dramatic and accelerating rate of coastal wetland loss in the northern Gulf of Mexico were investigated by an interdisciplinary university research team to discern the role of outer continental shelf development. The landscape changes and potential causal agents are emphasized herein. Natural driving factors include sea level rise and geological com- paction, which appear to remain constant this century, and sediment supply from the Mississippi River which has declined by 50%,since the 1950s. In this paper the WiZard experiment to be performed at the U.S. Space Station Freedom is presented. The apparatus will operate at the Astromag facility as a magnetic spectrometer dedicated to the search of primordial antimatter in the cosmic radiation. Several additional questions in the field of astrophysics and cosmology like solar flares, the galactic anisotropy, spectra of heavier nuclei (from carbon to iron), gamma-ray astronomy and others will also be investigated with such an apparatus and are discussed as well. Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman in John 4 draws on themes of Roman imperialism and Samaria’s colonial history. The Samaritan townspeople call Jesus “the Savior of the world” (4:42), a title used for Roman emperors from Julius Caesar to Hadrian. They go out to meet Jesus and welcome him to their town, a practice used to welcome emperors and other dignitaries. Using a title of empire-wide significance emphasizes that Jesus now transcends older national divisions. The Samaritan woman speaks as an individual and representative of her people. Her personal history with five husbands parallels her national history of colonization …

The Gospel of John does not march in step with the other gospels. Perhaps this is why the framers of the three-year lectionary now used by many Christian churches found it so difficult to domesticate John. The readings from Matthew, Mark, and Luke proceed in measured pace, one gospel per year, while the Fourth Gospel appears sporadically throughout the lectionary, claiming a premier role on festival days, dominating the Easter season, and making occasional guest appearances. The rebinding kinetics of CO to myoglobin after flash photolysis is nonexponential in time below approximately 180 K; the kinetics is governed by a distribution of enthalpic barriers. This distribution results from inhomogeneities in the protein conformation, referred to as conformational substates. Hole-burning experiments on the Soret and IR CO-stretch bands test the assumption that an inhomogeneous distribution of conformational substates results in inhomogeneously broadened spectra. CO was slowly photolyzed at different wavelengths in the Soret band at 10 K. Both the Soret band and the CO-stretch band A1, centered at 1,945 cm-1, shift during photolysis, demonstrating that different wavelengths …

Sales by U.S. "furniture and home furnishings" stores were nearly $75 billion in 1987, the year of the most recent Census of Retail Trade. The sales total includes $26 billion for "furniture" stores, $16 billion for "homefurnishings" stores, $8 billion for "household appliance" stores, and $24 billion for "radio, television, computer, and music" stores.

The 1987 Census of Retail Trade reports sales for the combined category, furniture and home furnishings, for all U.S. states, counties, and metropolitan areas. In this article, therefore, the term "furniture and home furnishings" refers to combined sales for all of the store types in Table …

The furniture industry provides a ready market for high quality hardwoods, as well as for lower quality hardwood timber; the outlook for the use of wood of both types is very favorable - particularly in the production of upholstered and non-upholstered furniture for household use.

Grade I yellow-popular logos were recently selling for $150/mbf, three times the price for grade 2 logs in North Carolina. A computerized stand development model was used to examine the profitability of thinning and holding yellow poplar stands for increased diameter and grade. Analyses were done over wide ranges in stand age, site quality, and stocking, at 5% and 10% discount rates. At a 5% discount rate, the maximum net present stumpage value was obtained by thinning in most regimes. Lower stand age, higher initial stocking, and higher site indices favored thin-clearcut regimes over regimes with no initial thinning. At …

Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers Vs Rat Snakes: The Effectiveness Of The Resin Barrier, D. Craig Rudolph, Howard Kyle, Richard N. Conner

Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (Picoides borealis) excavate resin wells in the immediate vicinity of roost and nest cavity entrances. Resin wells are worked regularly, resulting in a copious and persistent resin flow that coats the tree trunk, especially below cavity entrances. Red-cockaded Woodpeckers also scale loose bark from cavity trees and closely adjacent trees. These two behaviors result in smooth, sticky surfaces surrounding cavity entrances. Climbing experiments on cavity, scaled, and control trees using rat snakes (Elaphe obsoleta) demonstrate that these behaviors produce a resinous barrier that is highly effective in preventing predatory snakes from gaining access to active Red-cockaded Woodpecker cavities.

The Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Picoides borealis) is an endangered species endemic to the pine forests of the southeastern United States (Jackson 1971). Deforestation and habitat alteration have severely affected Red-cockaded Woodpecker populations; current populations are isolated and most are declining (Jackson 1971, Lennartz et al. 1983, Conner and Rudolph 1989, Costa and Escano 1989). The species has been extirpated from significant areas of suitable or potentially suitable habitat.

In the following report I shall concentrate on the law as pronounced by the United States Supreme Court, which has, within the sphere of judicial competence, the last say on the interpretation of the Constitution. The volume of significant litigation on the subject which stops below the Supreme Court has been relatively light, and the constitutional law declared by the lower courts has played a less significant role than is the case in many other issues.
