Occurrence Of A Thiothrix Sp. Attached To Mayfly Larvae And Presence Of Parasitic Bacteria In The Thiothrix Sp., J. M. Larkin, M. C. Henk, S. D. Burton

Larvae of the mayfly (Drunella gransi [Eaton]) from Diamond Fork Creek, Utah, were covered with a heavy growth of the sulfide-oxidizing bacterium Thiothrix. The bacterium did not seem to harm the mayfly, but the Thiothrix trichomes were parasitized by three morphologically distinct bacteria, two of which were cytoplasmic and one of which was probably periplasmic. At least two of the parasites destroyed the cytoplasmic contents of the Thiothrix sp., thus killing the host cell. Attempts to obtain the parasites in pure culture were unsuccessful.

A New Chloroplast Protein Is Induced By Growth On Low Co2 In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Catherine B. Mason, Livingston J. Manuel, James V. Moroney

The biosynthesis of a 36 kilodalton polypeptide of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was induced by photoautotrophic growth on low CO2. Fractionation studies using the cell-wall-deficient strain of C. reinhardtii, CC-400, showed that this polypeptide was different from the low CO2-induced periplasmic carbonic anhydrase. In addition, the 36 kilodalton polypeptide was found to be localized in intact chloroplasts isolated from low CO2-adapting cultures. This protein may, in part, account for the different inorganic carbon uptake characteristics observed in chloroplasts isolated from high and low CO2-grown C. reinhardtii cells.

Effects Of Added Manganic And Ferric Oxides On Sulfate Reduction And Sulfide Oxidation In Intertidal Sediments, Gary M. King

Freshly precipitated iron or manganese oxides were added to surface sediments from a salt marsh and from the intertidal region of Lowes Cove, Maine. In the presence of added manganese, sulfate was formed under anoxic conditions, suggesting a manganese dependent sulfide oxidation. Sulfate formation was not observed with iron additions. Sulfate reduction was substantially but not completely inhibited by either metal oxide, even though both were added at levels well in excess though both were added at levels well in excess of natural concentrations. Rates of methane emission from intact cores were measured during anoxic dark and oxic light and dark incubations. Rates of methane oxidation were calculated on the basis of oxic incubations by using the anoxic emissions as an estimate of the maximum potential flux. This technique indicated that methane oxidation consumed up to 91% of the maximum potential flux in peat sediments but that oxidation was negligible in marl sediments. Oxygen microprofiles determined for intact cores were comparable to profiles measured in situ. Thus, the laboratory incubations appeared to provide a reasonable approximation of in situ activities. Antimicrobial Susceptibilities Of Staphylococcal Species Isolated From Mammary Glands Of Unbred And Primigravid Dairy Heifers, P. Trinidad, S. C. Nickerson, D. G. Luther

Staphylococcal isolates from teat canal keratin and mammary secretion samples of unbred and primigravid Jersey heifers were tested in vitro for susceptibility to 12 antimicrobial agents. More than 92% of the 311 isolates were susceptible to all antimicrobial agents tested. Staphylococci other than Staphylococcus aureus demonstrated an overall susceptibility of 98.3% to all antibiotics, and Staphylococcus aureus demonstrated a 97% susceptibility. Across all staphylococcal species, susceptibility of isolates from secretion samples was 98.1%, and susceptibility of isolates from teat canal keratin samples was 93.1%. An experiment was conducted with 5- to 18-day-old Arbor Acres broiler chicks to evaluate the interaction of sodium zeolite A (NZA) and monensin in uninfected and in coccidiosis-infected chicks. Sodium zeolite A (0 and .75%) or monensin (0 and 121 ppm), or both, were fed to uninfected chicks or to chicks infected with 4 x 10(5) sporulated, Eimeria acervulina oocysts, resulting in a 2-by-2-by-2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Coccidial infection reduced (P less than .01) weight gain, feed intake, feed efficiency, percentage of bone ash and of bone calcium; but the infection increased (P less than .05) bone Zn percentage. …

On 12 April 1627 a fleet of six galleys belonging to the Order of Santo Stefano set sail from Livorno on their expedition "contro il comune nemico"–the Turks. This journey would take them along the western and southern coast of Italy, through the Ionian Sea to the Peloponnese and across the Aegean Sea to the Dardanelles. Along the way the sailors encountered many vessels, both friend and foe, heard reports of sea battles and movements of ships in those waters, and listened to an account of a miracle wrought by the Virgin Mary. In three of the early sections of the Libro de buen amor, Juan Ruiz explains to his public how, for various reasons, he is conditioned to love women. In stanzas 71-76 he uses the unimpeachable authority of Aristotle to argue that men and animals are biologically determined to seek 'juntamiento con fenbra plazentera' (st. 71d), and since he is a man like any other, it is natural, perhaps even inevitable, that from time to time he too should feel the attraction of the opposite sex. This essay addresses the Supreme Court's three-part establishment clause test originally set down in Lemon v. Kurtzman. Part I concerns the manner in which the Lemon test has substantially evolved. Part II explores what the evolved test has to offer by way of solving the seemingly conflicting duties not to inhibit free speech and political rights, while at the same time refraining from passing laws "respecting an establishment of religion." Finally, Part III addresses some of the proposals to supplant Lemon altogether.

Professor Bell has placed before us a basic question that must be dealt with by all who wish to resolve the difficulties inherent in governing a free society. That question is one with which the framers of our Constitution grappled and that baffles us still. How does a society effectively govern itself and at the same time guarantee equal liberty for all? More specifically, in the racial context presented by The Chronicle of the Space Traders, when may government act for the benefit of society in a manner that is detrimental to some of its citizens because of their race?

A radiochemical 71Ga-71Ge experiment to determine the integral flux of neutrinos from the sun has been constructed at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory in the USSR. Measurements have begun with 30 tonnes of gallium. An additional 30 tonnes of gallium are being installed so as to perform the full experiment with a 60-tonne target. The motivation, experiment procedures, and present status of this experiment are described. © 1990.

As the size of the cycloalkenyl ring in synthetic C5-C7 tetracycloalkenyl-meso-tetraphenylporphyrins (TCnTPP) is increased the porphyrin core changes from planar to non-planar, showing that porphyrins with well-defined degrees of ruffling can be synthesized for use in systematic studies to determine the effects of non-planarity. © 1990.

Glucose transport in skeletal muscle is mediated by two distinct transporter isoforms, designated muscle/adipose glucose transporter (Glut4) and erythrocyte/HepG2/brain glucose transporter (Glut1), which differ in both abundance and membrane distribution. The present study was designed to investigate whether differences in insulin responsiveness of red and white muscle might be due to differential expression of the glucose transporter isoforms. Glucose transport, as well as Glut1 and Glut4 protein and mRNA levels, were determined in red and white portions of the quadriceps and gastrocnemius muscles of male Sprague-Dawley rats (body wt. approx. 250 g). Glycosylation can affect the physical and biochemical properties of the polypeptide chain in glycoproteins. Asparagine‐N‐linked polylactosaminyl glycosylation of the chymotryptic 44‐kDa gelatin‐binding domain from human placental fibronectin confers protease resistance [Zhu, B. C. R., Fisher, S. F., Panda, H., Calaycay, J., Shively, J. E. & Laine, R. A. (1984) J. Biol. Chem. 259, 3962–3970] and weakens the binding to gelatin [Zhu, B. C. R. & Laine, R. A. (1985) J. Biol. Chem. 260, 4041–4045]. Intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence of the gelatinbinding domain was used to probe glycosylation‐dependent protein conformation changes. Dynamics And Controls Of Methane Oxidation In A Danish Wetland Sediment, Gary M. King

Abstract The patterns and controls of methane oxidation in a Danish wetland sediment have been determined using a combination of slurry and intact core techniques. Results from slurries indicated that methane oxidation was effectively inhibited by low concentrations of nitrapyrin (9 μM) and acetylene (0.5 μM) but that oxidation was relatively insensitive to pH between 6 and 8; in addition, high concentrations of ammonia (1 mM) decreased oxidation, especially at alkaline pH. Kinetic analyses of methane oxidation in slurries indicated that Vmax was high relative to values reported for other sediments, that Vmax changed seasonally, that Km was consistently low …

Formation Of Methylmercaptan And Dimethylsulfide From Methoxylated Aromatic Compounds In Anoxic Marine And Fresh Water Sediments, Kai Finster, Gary M. King, Friedhelm Bak

Abstract Anaerobic formation of dimethylsulfide (DMS) and methylmercaptan (MSH) in anoxic sulfide‐containing slurries from marine and fresh water sediments was stimulated by addition of syringate (4‐hydroxy,3,5,‐dimethoxybenzoate) and 3,4,5,‐trimethoxybenzoate. The release of DMS and MSH occurred during the consumption of the aromatic monomers and ceased after their depletion. DMS was the dominant methylated sulfur compound in fresh water sediments, in contrast to marine sediments where MSH was predominant. No production of volatile organic sulfur compounds was observed in slurries containing gallate (3,4,5,‐trihydroxybenzoate) or in autoclaved controled. The gradual decline in stroke mortality rates observed in the United States since 1900 accelerated markedly around 1973 for whites and around 1968 for blacks. During the next decade stroke mortality rates decreased by almost 50% so that the United States now experiences one of the lowest stroke mortality rates in the world. Beginning in 1979, however, the annual rate of decline in stroke mortality began to slow considerably. Comparing the period 1979-1986 with the previous decade, a 57% slowing in the absolute rate of decline (as estimated by the slope of the linear portion of the mortality curve) was …

The Lévy Laplacian ΔF(ξ) = limN→∞N-1∑n = 1N 〈F″(ξ),en⊗ en〉 is shown to be equal to (i) ∝TF″s″(ξ;t)dt, where Fs″ is the singular part of F″, and (ii) 2limρ{variant}→0ρ{variant}-2(MF(ξ,ρ{variant})-F(ξ)), where MF is the spherical mean of F. It is proved that regular polynomials are Δ-harmonic and possess the mean value property. A relation between the Lévy Laplacian Δ and the Gross Laplacian ΔGF(ξ) = ∑n = 1∞=〈F″(ξ),en⊗ en〉 is obtained. In this paper the relationship between locally reachable sets for a fixed set of controls in the Lie algebra of a Lie group and the local semigroups generated by the corresponding one-parameter semigroup is considered. It is convenient to carry out the investigation in the Lie algebra itself, and the appropriate machinery for doing this is first developed. It is shown that local semigroups contain locally reachable sets. A well-known result of Tutte is that U2,4, the 4-point line, is the only non-binary matroid M such that, for every element e, both Mβe and M e, the deletion and contraction of e from M, are binary. It was proved by Oxley that U2,4 is the only non-trivial 3-connected matroid N such that, whenever a 3-connected matroid M has an N-minor and x and y are elements of M, there is an N-minor of M using {x, y} . This paper establishes the corresponding result for binary matroids by proving that if M and N above must both be binary, then there are exactly two possibilities for N: the rank-three and rank-four wheels. © 1990, Academic Press Limited. Different methods of determining quantity-intensity (Q/I) parameters with ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) were developed and evaluated with suspensions of three Iowa soils and a successive-additions method of varying the added K+. The ISE methods, which were categorized on the basis of the electrochemical cell involved, were tested for their applicability to soil suspensions. Specifically, single-ISE, dual-ISE, and triple-ISE methods were compared to ascertain the best means of determining the ΔK (gain or loss of dissolved K) and CR [concentration ratio: CK/(CCa+Mg)1/2] terms of the Q/I relationships. Chromosomal areas from metaphase spreads of male bovine leukocytes were digitized and sex chromosomes identified using videomicroscopy. Autosomal areas were ranked in descending order within a cell and assigned to two categories based on alternating rank. X and Y chromosome areas were assigned to respective categories. Areas were divided by 4 to make their sum equivalent to sperm DNA content. Data were analyzed before and after inclusion of sex chromosomal areas. Before X and Y inclusion, rank contributed to difference in chromosomal areas. Rank by category interaction and category effects did not contribute to area variation. After X and Y …
