Information about whose knowledge is accepted as important is valuable in understanding how a profession evolves. The term elders describes the individuals who control invisible networks of prestige and who determine what information is accepted for publication in professional journals. These published works stand as the foundation for the knowledge base of a discipline. The purpose of this article was to identify the elders in physical education teacher education (PETE) and to trace their academic genealogy. When the General Assembly adopted the Virginia Limited Liability Company Act (the "Act")' in 1991, Virginia joined just four other states in recognizing the potential of a relatively obscure business entity, the limited liability company ("LLC"). The LLC concept has spread rapidly since the adoption of the Virginia Act early last year. Three other states enacted LLC legislation in 1991, and in just the first few months of 1992, six more states followed the trend.

We prove that polynomial time on a parallel random access machine (PRAM) with unit-cost multiplication and division or on a PRAM with unit-cost shifts is equivalent to polynomial space on a Turing machine (PSPACE). This extends the result that polynomial time on a basic PRAM is equivalent to PSPACE to hold when the PRAM is allowed multiplication or division or unrestricted shifts. It also extends to the PRAM the results that polynomial time on a random access machine (RAM) with multiplication is equivalent to PSPACE and that polynomial time on a RAM with shifts (that is, a vector machine) is …

A substantial literature on lower federal courts and state courts suggests that the "haves" usually come out ahead in litigation because they possess superior resources for it and they reap advantages from their repeat player status. We investigate the success of 10 categories of litigants before the Warren, Burger, and Rehnquist Courts to determine whether the resources or experience of litigants has effects on Supreme Court outcomes paralleling those found in the courts below. While different categories of litigants are found to have very different rates of success, those differences do not consistently favor litigants with greater resources. A time …

This article investigates the role of attributional thinking in generating resistance to pressures toward conformity in the illicit consumption of drugs and alcohol. The results of four studies regarding how conformity influences illicit drug and alcohol consumption among high school and college students are reported. In study 1 more than two-thirds of the respondents reported concern for the implications of their own dissent or compliance regarding the reactions of their peers. Study 2 demonstrated a significant relationship between high school students' attributional thinking concerning a peer group's illicit beer consumption and conformity, expressed as intentions to drink the beer. The authors acknowledge the support of the Office of Basic Energy Sciences of the United States Department of Energy. Determination of an interface damage function (IDF) from a stereological procedure similar to that presented by Hilliard is described. The mathematical and experimental simplicity of the method is utilized in measuring an IDF for polycrystalline copper crept at 0.6T sub m under uniaxial tension. In the undersea operation of a tethered ROV system, the pilot's ability to control precisely the ROV is often limited by disturbance forces generated by drag due to currents that act either directly on the ROV or indirectly on the ROV through the tether. The objective of this research, which was conducted at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), was to characterize the magnitude and dynamics of tether forces by measuring them during operation. This article examines an iconic form of communication, sound symbolism, which has been associated with oral cultures and implicated in paradigms of primitive mentality, I argue that Lowland Ecuadorean Quechua speakers use sound symbolic iconicity to create interlocutionary involvement. A speaker's performative foregrounding of a sound symbolic form simuhtes the salient qualities of an action, event, or process, and thereby invites a listener to project into an experience. This projected involvement, in turn, points the listener to deeper kinds of imaginative, intellectual, and emotional engagement with the narrative. Quasielastic-light-scattering measurements are reported for a dialkoxyphenylbenzoate monomer and its dimer in their respective nematic phases. The splay and twist elastic moduli of the dimer are found to be nearly independent of molecular length. The dimer's bend modulus, however, shows an anomalous increase with decreasing temperature well below the nematic-isotropic phase transition. Monomer viscosities are consistent with typical literature values, although γ₁/η_splay and η_bend seem to be larger than expected for the dimer, where γ₁ is the twist viscosity. The results are discussed in terms of viscoelastic properties of semiflexible rods. The elastic properties in …

In most areas of Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee the recent arrival and dramatic growth of the hardwood chipping industry has created concerns among some members of the hardwood manufacturing industry. Hardwood sawmill and furniture manufacturing personnel are concerned that marginal sawlog/pulpwood material is increasingly processed as chips rather than sawn into lumber. The potential exists for increased in-woods merchandising of hardwoods, and this paper evaluates how transportation costs and pricing differences between hardwood pulpwood and sawlogs affect merchandising and hauling decisions. A model was developed to assist individual users in evaluating their merchandising and transportation options.

A series of studies examined the effects of fall fertilization with diammoniwn phosphate (DAP) on mitotic index and bud donnancy [as measured by mean days to budbreak (DBB)] of two half-sib seed sources of loblolly pine. The first study tested different rates of DAP (0, 67, and 202 kg Nlha), the second study compared DAP with ammoniwnnitrate, and the third study examined the effect of different application dates (September 28, October 19, and November 9). This study focused on the behavior of a proportional, stratified random sample of 40 physical education methods teacher educators (PEMTEs) in the state of Ohio, or more specifically, on the professional implications of their scholarly behaviors. The focal questions addressed were (a) how do PEMTEs meet their responsibility to stay current in their professional areas, and (b) what are the professional implications of these efforts? Four specific behaviors were examined as evidence of scholarly behaviors: (a) reading professional journals, (b) writing for publication, (c) attendance at professional conferences, and (d) active involvement in research. Two sections of the Copyright Act of 1976 permit public performances in libraries under certain circumstances. Professor Heller explains the public performance right in the context of both owners and users of copyrighted works, and proposes a fair use standard that could provide much needed guidance on the use of copyrighted videocassettes in libraries.

Note On The Number Dependence Of Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of The Viscosity Of Structured Molecules, Richard L. Rowley, James F. Ely

Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations have been performed for a system of 512 four-site models representing n-butane molecules. The results are compared to simulations previously reported for 125 molecules to check a recently reported number dependence in such simulations. A small system size dependence was observed at low shear rates, but the rheological behavior is not affected. Considerably greater certainty is obtained using larger systems.

A mathematical model for calculating the temperature distribution as a function of power delivered to a line source and the thermal conductivity of the surrounding medium in the pressure cell of a cubic-anvil press was derived. The model will handle anisotropic thermal conductivities. A simple sample assembly consisting of a line source and two or three thermocouple junctions is described. A comparison of measured to calculated temperatures yields the thermal conductivity. Thermal conductivity measurements were made on natural pyrophyllite and baked pyrophyllite to 40 kbar. Describing science as middle school students experience it continues to be a challenge. The science that students experience in the classroom is that which their teachers have selected and organized for them. This selection/organization process is itself guided by the teacher's knowledge base and the expectations of the schooling context. Presented here is a contrast practiced in the middle school in 1990 with 1965. The findings show that while teachers today may be better prepared in terms of academic courses, they are still not being adequately prepared to work with the emerging adolescent in the middle school.

Race And Ethnic Variation In The Schooling Consequences Of Female Adolescent Sexual Activity, Renata Forste, Marta Tienda

Data from the National Survey of Families and Households are used to examine the influence of adolescent childbearing and marriage on the likelihood of high school completion among a cohort of women aged 20 to 29 in 1987. Use of event history techniques reveals striking differences by ethnicity. While the effect of teen marriage on school completion was significant only for whites, adolescent childbearing had much stronger deleterious effects for Latinas than for white or especially black teens. Attitudinal data are presented in an effort to explain these differences.

This presentation examines the author’s work focusing on "rethinking accountability" in public administration. It critiques dominant paradigms, such as rational choice and bureaucratic politics, for their superficial understanding of public sector behavior and provides an overview to the widely cited “accountability framework” developed with Romzek in their 1987 study of the Challenger accident. The framework is based on the idea that public administrators and other decision makers are constantly faced with multiple, diverse and (often) conflicting expectations, and that various forms of accountability develop as a response to such situations. Effect Of Co2 On The Processing Of Y-Ba-Cu-O Superconductors, C. Zhang, Guna S. Selvaduray

The superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O6+x reacted with various known ratios of O2/CO2 gas mixtures during sintering at different temperatures were studied. Jc was found to decrease drastically upon reaction with CO2, becoming zero at certain CO2 activities. The stability region for the 123 superconductor, as a function of CO2 activity and temperature, was empirically formulated as follows: log pCO2 < (−45,000)/T + 33.4. The grain boundaries in sintered samples with Jc = 0 were investigated with HRTEM in conjunction with EDS. Two distinct types of grain boundaries were observed. Approximately 10% of the grain boundaries were wet by a thin layer of a second phase, deduced to be BaCuO2. The remaining boundaries were sharp grain boundaries. The grain structure near the sharp grain boundaries was tetragonal. These two types of grain boundaries are thought to be responsible for Jc being zero.

This research effort attempted to determine if SB/ intervention would change the perception of business problems by not only the business owner but also the student consultants. This focus further to encompassed firms that could be classified in either Stage I or Stage II of development. Even though there were no changes in perception by student consultants, and mixed results of whether stage development affected perceptual differences, strong support was given to the proposition that owners, overall, did change their perception of existing problems after SBI intervention.
