Our group is studying the structure and interfaces of soft x-ray multilayers by various techniques including x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy is particularly useful since it is sensitive to the identity of individual bonds and thus can potentially characterize the abruptness of interfaces in multilayers. Blocking interfacial mixing is very important in achieving and maintaining high reflectivity. We report our studies of the as-deposited and postannealed structure of Mo/Si and W/C multilayers. Jones Polynomials For Intersecting Knots As Physical States Of Quantum Gravity, Bernd Brügmann, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin

We find a consistent formulation of the constraints of quantum gravity with a cosmological constant in terms of the Ashtekar new variables in the connection representation, including the existence of a state that is a solution to all the constraints. This state is related to the Chern-Simons form constructed from the Ashtekar connection and has an associated metric in space-time that is everywhere nondegenerate. We then transform this state to the loop representation and find solutions to all the constraint equations for intersecting loops. These states are given by suitable generalizations of the Jones knot polynomial for the case of …

The RAPD (or AP-PCR) DNA fingerprinting method was used to distinguish among clinical isolates of Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium whose long term carriage is associated with gastritis, peptic ulcers and gastric carcinomas. This method uses arbitrarily chosen oligonucleotides to prime DNA sythesis from genomic sites to which they are fortuitously matched, or almost matched. Most 10-nt primers with > 60% G + C yielded strain-specific arrays of up to 15 prominent fragments, as did most longer ( > 17-nt) primers, whereas most 10-nt primers with 50% G +C did not. Bacterial abundance and production (thymidine and leucine incorporation) were measured along a salinity gradient from the Mississippi River (0 %0) to the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico (36 %0) during July-August 1990 and February 1991. Bacterial production in surface waters was maximal at intermediate salinities (15 to 30 %0). Nutrient enrichment experiments suggested that bacterial growth near the outflow of the river was C limited whereas bacteria in plume waters of intermediate salinities were P and N limited. Although it is generally recognized today that Paul’s faith was not a religion of subjectivity, some may nevertheless object to the notion that the apostle’s theology has a political dimension. Surely, it may be said, the sectarian communities which Paul nurtured with the stark contrasts of “outsiders” and “insiders” did not think that their task was to influence public policy in the cities of the Roman empire. While it is of course preposterous to think that the early Christians had Caesar’s ear, influencing public policy is only one way of engaging in politics.

This article analyzes the difficulties involved in attributing cause in fact in omission cases, and suggests possible resolutions. Part II discusses the basic concept of causation, and the distinction between acts and omissions. Part III discusses the particular problems that arise in applying causation principles in omission cases. Part IV then analyzes these problems from both corrective justice and economic analysis perspectives. Finally, the article suggests an approach for solving these complex issues.

Some Evidence On The Empirical Significance Of Credit Rationing, Allen N. Berger, Gregory F. Udell

This paper examines the credit rationing debate using detailed contract information on over one million commercial bank loans from 1977 to 1988. While commercial loan rates are "Sticky," consistent with rationing, this stickiness varies with loan contract terms in ways that are not predicted by equilibrium credit rationing theory. In addition, the proportion of new loans issued under commitment does not increase significantly when credit markets are tight, despite the fact that borrowers without commitments can be rationed whereas commitment borrowers are contractually insulated from rationing. Overall, the data suggest that equilibrium rationing is not a significant macroeconomic phenomenon.

Adaptive Boundary Detection Using “Live-Wire” Two-Dimensional Dynamic Programming, William A. Barrett, Bryan S. Morse, Eric N. Mortensen, Jayaram Udupa

An adaptive boundary detection algorithm that uses two-dimensional dynamic programming is presented. The algorithm is less constrained than previous one-dimensional dynamic programming algorithms and allows the user to interactively determine the mathematically optimal boundary between a user-selected seed point and any other dynamically selected "free” point in the image. Interactive movement of the free point by the cursor causes the boundary to behave like a “live wire” as it adapts to the new minimum cost path between the seed point and the currently selected free point. Linkages Among Preschoolers' Playground Behavior, Outcome Expectations, And Parental Disciplinary Strategies, Craig H. Hart, Michele Dewolf, Diane C. Burts

To explore relationships among parent's self-reported disciplinary strategies, preschoolers' outcome expectations, and playground behavior. 136 mothers of preschool age children (age range 39-71 months) participated in home disciplinary style interviews. Measures of preschoolers' outcome expectations and observations of children's' prosocial, antisocial/disruptive, and nonsocial/withdrawn playground behavior were also obtained. results indicated that power-assertive mothers had preschoolers who engaged in more antisocial/disruptive behavior and who expected successful instruments outcomes for hostile methods of resolving peer conflict. Preschoolers with such outcome expectations also participated in more antisocial playground behavior.

Nuclear Dna Content Variation Within The Rosaceae, E. E. Dickson, K. Arumuganathan, Stephen Kresovich, J. J. Doyle

Nuclear DNA content has been estimated using flow cytometry for 17 species and eight cultivars of Malus and for 44 species of 29 other genera within the Rosaceae. Compared to other angiosperms, diploid genome sizes vary little within the family Rosaceae and within the genus Malus. C-values of genera within the subfamilies Spiraeoideae and Rosoideae are among the smallest of flowering plants thus far reported. In general, the Maloideae have the largest diploid genomes of the family, consistent with their higher chromosome numbers and presumed polyploid origin.

Lignite dried in a stream of dry nitrogen at moderate temperatures (20-80-degrees-C) loses water in two distinguishable modes. The first mode represents about 80-85% of the loss of moisture. The second represents the other 15-20% lost under these conditions. The rate follows a unimolecular mechanism (like radioactive decay) for each mode. The activation energy for the first mode is close to the heat of vaporization of water. The rate is dependent upon the gas flow around the sample and the weight (or thickness) of the sample. It is often suggested that preservice teachers who are trained to develop a lesson plan will, with equal acumen, be able to implement that plan. The purpose of this study was to test this assumption. Twenty-six preservice teachers in an early childhood practicum developed and implemented a mathematics lesson plan. The lesson plans were evaluated according to specific criteria set forth in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics using a weighted checklist. The implementation of each plan was also assessed using a Likert Scale reflective of similar criteria. A correlation between the …

The authors wish to acknowledge support of this work by the Office of Basic Energy Sciences of the U. S. Department of Energy. An interface damage function (IDF), which statistically describes the area fraction of interface damage as a function of up to eight parameters defining crystallite interfaces, was determined for commercial purity copper specimens crept in plane strain tension. The IDF was determined from stereological parameters measured on plane sections cut through damaged specimens. The eight-dimensional space of the function was investigated by analyzing two-dimensional projections of the complete domain. Certain special interfaces were observed to damage preferentially. A …

Our research reflects the general tendencies and the challenges that develop when diverse thinking styles exist within any large organization, including libraries. After compiling and analyzing the various instruments used in this study, we concluded that the professional librarians in this sample tended to be verbally oriented and more satisfied with libraries than were the visual thinkers.

Nine species of the permineralized stems of Tempskya were investigated from the Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain and Burro Canyon Formations, and the lower Upper Cretaceous Dakota Formation in central and southeastern Utah. Tempskya jonesii, T. stichkae, and T. readii are new and are differentiated on the basis of the radial orientation of their dorsiventral stems, their internodal lengths, the lack of sclerenchyma in the inner cortex of T. jonesii, the three nearly continuous zones of sclerenchyma in the inner cortex off T. stichkae, and the completely sclerotic inner cortex of T. readii. The interval Bezier curve, which, unlike other curve and surface approximation schemes, can transfer a complete description of approximation errors between diverse CAD/CAM systems that impose fundamentally incompatible constraints on their canonical representation schemes, is described. Interval arithmetic, which offers an essentially infallible way to monitor error propagation in numerical algorithms that use floating-point arithmetic is reviewed. Affine maps, the computations of which are key operations in the de Casteljau subdivision and degree-elevation algorithms for Bezier curves, the floating-point error propagation in such computations, approximation by interval polynomials, and approximation by interval Bezier curves are discussed.

The notion of connectivity for submodular functions was introduced by Cunningham. This paper relates the connectivity of such a function f to that of certain submodular functions which are derived from f. In particular, we prove a generalisation of the well-known matroid result that, for every element x of a connected matroid M, either the deletion or contraction of x from M is connected. © 1992.

Cultural sensitivity is a crucial component of health care provision, particularly in psychiatric settings. As society becomes more multicultural, it is essential for occupational therapists to continue to develop cultural competence, which is defined in this paper as an awareness of, sensitivity to, and knowledge of the meaning of culture. At San Francisco General Hospital, an innovative multicultural model consisting of special focus programs is used. The key to the success of such programs is a culturally competent professional staff.

The allegory of the olive tree attributed to the ancient prophet Zenos and copied from the plates of brass into the small plates by Jacob was a source used by several Book of Mormon prophets. Lehi, Nephi, Jacob, and Alma seemed to be relying on the allegory at several points in the elaboration of their own visions, prophecies, and teachings. This paper provides a systematic documentation of this phenomenon, including passages that have not previously been linked to Zenos. Music plays a larger role in the book of Revelation than in any other book of the New Testament, and few books in all of Scripture have spawned more hymns sung in Christian worship today. Attention to how the hymnic material in Revelation would have sounded to the Christians who first heard it, to the place of these hymns in Revelation as a whole, and to their relation to the rest of Scripture can help revitalize the singing of the hymns these passages have inspired.

Firms' announcements to call in-the-money convertible securities for redemption essentially force their conversion into common stock, and such announcements are generally met with significant reductions in the calling firms' equity values. An explanation based on liquidity costs is advanced and tested. The explanation implies that investors who choose to sell their shares early in the conversion period bear liquidity costs by selling at reduced prices. Consistent with the explanation, the average share price decline is short-lived, lasting most of the conversion period. Thus, a component of the call announcement effect appears to be due to liquidity costs.
