Head-On Collision Of Two Black Holes: Comparison Of Different Approaches, Peter Anninos, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin, Edward Seidel, Wai Mo Suen

Faculty Publications

A benchmark problem for numerical relativity has been the head-on collision of two black holes starting from the ''Misner initial data,'' a closed form momentarily stationary solution to the constraint equations with an adjustable closeness parameter μ0. We show here how an electric mixture of approximation methods can provide both an efficient means of determining the time development of the initial data and a good understanding of the physics of the problem. When the Misner data are chosen to correspond to holes initially very close together, a common horizon surrounds both holes and the geometry exterior to the horizon can …

Knot Polynomial States Of Quantum Gravity In Terms Of Loops And Extended Loops: Some Remarks, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin Jan 1995

Knot Polynomial States Of Quantum Gravity In Terms Of Loops And Extended Loops: Some Remarks, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

In this paper we review the status of several solutions to all the constraints of quantum gravity that have been proposed in terms of loops and extended loops, based on knot polynomials. We discuss pitfalls of several of the results, and in particular the issues of covariance and regularization of the constraints in terms of extended loops. We also propose a formalism for "thickened out loops," which does not face the covariance problems of extended loops and may allow to regularize expressions in a consistent manner. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Diurnal Water Relations And Gas Exchange Of Two Slash Pine (Pinus Elliottii) Families Exposed To Chronic Ozone Levels And Acidic Rain, J. D. Johnson, D. P. Byres, T. J. Dean Jan 1995

Diurnal Water Relations And Gas Exchange Of Two Slash Pine (Pinus Elliottii) Families Exposed To Chronic Ozone Levels And Acidic Rain, J. D. Johnson, D. P. Byres, T. J. Dean

Faculty Publications

Seedlings from two half‐sib families of Pinus elliottii var. elliottii Engelm. differing in sensitivity to ozone were grown in open‐top chambers for 22 months under simulated acidic rain (pH 3‐3) and four concentrations of ozone. The ozone concentrations were: charcoal‐filtered air (CF); non‐filtered ambient air (NF); twice the NF level (2X), thrice the NF level (3X). Ozone exposures were computer controlled to follow diurnal and seasonal fluctuations in ambient ozone concentrations. On two days, 24 April and 29 May, in the spring of 1990, trees were sampled repeatedly for xylem water potential, needle conductance and photosynthesis from sunrise to sunset …

Localization Of Endothelin-Like Immunoreactivity And Endothelin Binding Sites In Rabbit Eyes, Y. D. Zhao, L. X. Xu, J. W. Chandler Jan 1995

Localization Of Endothelin-Like Immunoreactivity And Endothelin Binding Sites In Rabbit Eyes, Y. D. Zhao, L. X. Xu, J. W. Chandler

Faculty Publications

Immunohistochemistry and in vitro autoradiographic techniques were used to investigate the localization of endothelin (ET)-like immunoreactivity and [125I]ET-1 binding sites in sections of ocular tissues of normal rabbits. ET-like immunoreactivity was localized to the corneal endothelium and the pre-epithelial layer of the cornea, which was specifically inhibited by addition of exogenous ET-1. Immunoreactivity for ET was also observed in the retinal ganglion layer and periocular fat tissues. These, however, were not inhibited in the presence of ET-1. Autoradiography showed binding sites for ET-1 in the iris and ciliary body. Emulsion-dipped slidesof sections of rabbit eyes incubated with [125I]ET-1 showed specific …

Tectonic Development Of Panama, Costa Rica, And The Colombian Andes: Constraints From Global Positioning System Geodetic Studies And Gravity, James N. Kellogg, Victor Vega Jan 1995

Tectonic Development Of Panama, Costa Rica, And The Colombian Andes: Constraints From Global Positioning System Geodetic Studies And Gravity, James N. Kellogg, Victor Vega

Faculty Publications

Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements suggest the existence of a rigid Panama- Costa Rica microplate that is moving northward relative to the stable Caribbean Plate. Northward motion of South America relative to the Caribbean plate is independently suggested by the April 1991 Costa Rica earthquake, active folding in the North Panama deformed belt, and a south-dipping Wadati-Benioff zone beneath Panama. Panama may also be continuing to collide eastward with the northern Andes. Rapid subduction is occurring at the Middle America (72mm/yr), Ecuador (70mm/yr), and Colombia (50mm/yr) trenches. The northern Andes are moving northeastward relative to stable South America. Preliminary GPS …

82 subjects who viewed and felt fabrics (sensory interaction group) used different categories of terms to describe fabric hand than did 38 subjects who only felt the fabrics. Therefore, the methods used to measure fabric hand that isolate the senses may not accurately assess the way in which subjects describe fabric hand in nonlaboratory settings.

Discordance Between Lmp-Based And Clinically Estimated Gestational Age: Implications For Research, Programs, And Policy, Greg R. Alexander, Mark E. Tompkins, Donna J. Petersen, Thomas C. Hulsey, Joanne Mor

This study examines the comparability between the last menstrual period-based and clinically estimated gestational age as collected on certificates of live birth. It explores whether sociodemographic or delivery characteristics influence their agreement and contrasts health status and health care utilization indicators, such as preterm, small for gestational age, and adequacy of prenatal care percentages, produced by each gestational age measure. The 1989-91 South Carolina public use live birth files were used for this analysis. A total of 169,082 single births to resident mothers were selected for investigation.

The clinically estimated gestational age distribution exhibited a higher mean and a tendency …
