What Journals Do Psychology Graduate Students Need?, Margaret Sylvia
What Journals Do Psychology Graduate Students Need?, Margaret Sylvia
Faculty Publications
The increasing price of journal subscriptions and the increasing number of journals available make it difficult for libraries to supply all needed material locally for scholarly research. Bibliographic citation analysis of student research papers is one method of evaluating the use of a journal collection. Journal selection and cancellation may be done on the basis of cost-per-use to maximize the usefulness of materials purchased with the library budget. Theses provide a convenient archival resource of student research. This study used the biblio-graphic citations found in theses and dissertations of graduate students in the psychology and counseling departments of the university, …
Improving America's Health Care: Authorizing Independent Prescriptive Privileges For Advanced Practice Nurses, Mary M. Beck
Improving America's Health Care: Authorizing Independent Prescriptive Privileges For Advanced Practice Nurses, Mary M. Beck
Faculty Publications
Nursing and organized medicine are engaged in a heated and emotional debate over independent prescriptive privileges for advanced practice nurses. Uncontroverted data demonstrates that nurse practitioners provide high quality health care at a reduced cost, while increasing access to health care for under-served populations. It is apparent that advanced practice nurses could improve the delivery of American health care. However, organized medicine is opposed to autonomous advanced nursing practice and lobbies powerfully against it. Currently, the majority of state laws and regulations pertaining to advanced practice nursing do not promote a sound public health policy, do not contemplate liability issues …

We evaluate the ability of the BATSE spectroscopy detectors to detect the absorption lines observed by Ginga in gamma-ray burst spectra. We find that BATSE can detect the 20.6 keV line in the S1 segment of GB 870303 with a detection probability of ∼1/4 in nearly normal incident bursts, with the probability dropping off to nearly 0 at a burst angle of 50°; the lines at 19.4 and 38.8 keV in GB 880205 have a high detection probability in BATSE up to burst angles of 75°. In addition, we calculate detection probabilities for these two line types as a function …
Kings And Counselors: The Politics Of Francis Bacon's Rhetorical Theory, Christopher Holcomb
Kings And Counselors: The Politics Of Francis Bacon's Rhetorical Theory, Christopher Holcomb
Faculty Publications
English author Francis Bacon's letters to the courtiers of King James VI before the monarch succeeded Elizabeth I reveals his concept of rhetoric as a tool for political advancement. Bacon wrote several letters to gain the king's confidence, in which he expressed his intent to portray the king in the most positive light to his subjects once he enters England and assumes the throne. The letters are remarkable in the way they suggest that Bacon can create a persona for the king through the power of rhetoric, since Bacon includes the draft of a speech which he hoped would be …
Relationship Lending And Lines Of Credit In Small Firm Finance, Allen N. Berger, Gregory F. Udell
Relationship Lending And Lines Of Credit In Small Firm Finance, Allen N. Berger, Gregory F. Udell
Faculty Publications
This article examines the role of relationship lending in small firm finance. It examines price and nonprice terms of bank lines of credit (L/Cs) extended to small firms. The focus on LICs allows the examination of a type of loan contract in which the hank- borrower relationship is likely to be an important mechanism for solving the asymmetric information problems associated with financing small enterprises. We find that borrowers with longer banking relationships pay lower interest rates and are less likely to pledge collateral. These results are consistent with theoretical arguments that relationship lending generates valuable information about borrower quality.

All We Really Need To Know About Teaching We Learned In Kindergarten, R. Lawrence Dessem
All We Really Need To Know About Teaching We Learned In Kindergarten, R. Lawrence Dessem

Being asked to talk recently about teaching to non-law school professors caused me to think about some of the successful techniques I have used or seen used in law school teaching. I was concerned, though, that these techniques might not be transferrable to other teachers in other settings. However, the more I thought about it the more I realized that the techniques we use in teaching law students are comparable to, if not identical with, techniques used by any successful teacher. These are the same techniques we all have seen utilized by our best teachers over our many years of …

We report the implementation of a liquid crystal-on-silicon, three-dimensional 13-D2 diffractive display based on the partial pixel architecture. The display generates multiple stereoscopic images that are perceived as a static 3-D scene with one-dimensional motion parallax in a manner that is functionally equivalent to a holographic stereogram. The images are created with diffraction gratings formed in a thin liquid crystal layer by fringing electric fields from transparent indium tin oxide interdigitated electrodes. The electrodes are controlled by an external drive signal that permits the 3-D scene to be turned on and off. The display has a contrast ratio of 5.8, …

Numerical Calculation Of Axisymmetric Electrostatic Modes For Cold Finite-Length Non-Neutral Plasmas, Johnny K. Jennings, Ross L. Spencer, K. C. Hansen
Faculty Publications
A numerical calculation of mode frequencies for cold, non-neutral plasmas is reported. The numerical method can be applied to any axisymmetric plasma shape in a trap. Here, it is used to study axisymmetric electrostatic modes in a long conducting cylinder. These modes were previously studied by Prasad and O'Neil [Phys. Fluids 26, 665 (1983)] and by Dubin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 66, 2076 (1991)]. In contrast to Dubin's calculation, the effects of a nearby cylindrical wall, including its influence on the shape of the plasma equilibrium, are considered. It is found that for plasmas with aspect ratios (length divided by diameter) …

Effects Of Pairing In The Pseudo-Su(3) Model, D. Troltenier, C. Bahri, J. P. Draayer
Faculty Publications
An extended version of the pseudo-SU(3) model which includes both spin and proton-neutron degrees of freedom is used to study the influence of the pairing interaction on K-band mixing, B(E2) values and quadrupole moments. Using the asymmetric rotor model as a backdrop, specific consequences of a many-particle shell-model based description of these collective properties are demonstrated and fundamental limits of the collective model's approach are investigated. Finally, the pseudo-SU(3) model, including representation mixing induced by pairing, is used to calculate the energies of 140Ce and the results are compared to experimental data and other theories. © 1995.

ID elements comprise a rodent SINE (short Interspersed DNA repetitive element) family that has amplified by retroposition of a few master genes. In order to understand the Important factors of SINE amplification, we investigated the transcription of rat ID elements. Three different size classes of ID transcripts, BC1, BC2 and T3, have been detected In various rat tissues, including brain and testes. We have analysed the nucleotlde sequences of testes- and brain-derived ID transcripts isolated by size-fractlonation, C-talling and RACE. Nucleotide sequence variation of testes ID transcripts demonstrated derivation from different loci. However, the transcripts represent a preferred set of …

We have purified two proteins from Drosophila that bind to the scs' boundary element of the hsp70 domain at locus 87A7. Their palindromic binding sites (CGATA-TATCG) symmetrically abut the previously mapped hypersensitive site of scs′. We have cloned a cDNA for one of these proteins, BEAF-32 (boundary element-associated factor of 32 kDa). It encodes a novel protein that is bound to scs' but not scs in vivo. Immunostaining localizes BEAF to hundreds of interbands and many puff boundaries on polytene chromosomes, suggesting that a chromosomal domain consists of a band (or puff) and part of the flanking interbands. Enhancer blocking …

Real-Time Three-Dimensional Display Based On The Partial Pixel Architecture, Gregory P. Nordin, M. W. Jones, S. T. Kowel, J. H. Kulick, R. G. Lindquist
Faculty Publications
We previously reported several static three-dimensional (3-D) display implementations of the partial pixel architecture [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 12, 73 (1995)]. We report herein our f irst real-time 3-D display based on this architecture. The display is functionally equivalent to a real-time holographic stereogram. It is autostereoscopic and provides horizontal motion parallax. The display device is composed of a diffractive optical element (fabricated with standard photolithographic techniques) and a separate conventional liquidcrystal display. The display has been used to play back a precomputed animated 3-D scene at video frame rates using a standard VGA video output.
Local Initiation Of Spermatogenesis In The Horse, A. J. Clemmons, D. L. Thompson, L. Johnson
Local Initiation Of Spermatogenesis In The Horse, A. J. Clemmons, D. L. Thompson, L. Johnson
Faculty Publications
Gross observation of testicular parenchyma of 1.5 to 2-yr-old horses reveals both light and dark regions. If this gross, differential shading reflects quantitative differences in the development of spermatogenesis and interstitial cell populations, the horse may prove to be a useful model for study of the paracrine relationships associated with initiation of spermatogenesis. The objective of this study was to characterize seminiferous tubules and interstitium of testes with gross, differential shading. Testes with both light and dark regions of parenchyma were obtained from horses 1.5- 2 yr old and compared to parenchyma of fetal, 2-yr old, or 5-yr-old horses. Stereology …

Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of charged particles in photoproduction events in the laboratory pseudorapidity range -1.2<η<1.4 have been measured up to pT=8 GeV usign the ZEUS detector. Diffractive and non-diffractive reactions have been selected with an average γp centre of mass (c.m.) energy of 〈W〉=180 GeV. For diffractive reactions, the pT spectra of the photon dissociation events have been measured in two intervals of the dissociated photon mass with mean values 〈MX〉=5 GeV and 10 GeV. The inclusive transverse momentum spectra fall exponentially in the low pT region. The non-diffractive data show a pronounced high pT tail departing from the exponential shape. The pT distributions are compared to lower energy photoproduction data and to hadron-hadron collisions at a similar c.m. energy. The data are also compared to the results of a next-to-leading order QCD calculation. © 1995 Springer-Verlag.
Computer Simulation Study Of The Permeability Of Driven Polymers Through Porous Media, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey
Computer Simulation Study Of The Permeability Of Driven Polymers Through Porous Media, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey
Faculty Publications
A computer simulation model is used to study the permeability of polymer chains driven by a biased flow field through a porous medium in two dimensions. The chains are modeled by constrained self-avoiding walks, which reptate through the heterogeneous medium with a biased probability imposed by the driven field. A linear response description is used to evaluate an effective permeability. The permeability σ shows an unusual decay behavior on reducing the porosity ps. We find that the permeability decreases on increasing the bias above a characteristic value Bc. This characteristic bias shows a logarithmic decay on …

Hodographs And Normals Of Rational Curves And Surfaces, Thomas W. Sederberg, Takafumi Saito, Guo-Jin Wang
Faculty Publications
Derivatives and normals of rational Bézier curves and surface patches are discussed. A non-uniformly scaled hodograph of a degree m x n tensor-product rational surface, which provides correct derivative direction but not magnitude, can be written as a degree (2m - 2) x 2n or 2m x (2n - 2) vector function in polynomial Bézier form. Likewise, the scaled normal direction is degree (3m - 2) x(3n - 2). Efficient methods are developed for bounding these directions and the derivative magnitude.

Stomatal Characterization Of Grass Leaves By Four Preparation Techniques, Val J. Anderson, John S. Gardner, Joyce Phillips Hardy
Faculty Publications
Four leaf preparation techniques (air drying, tetramethylsilane air drying, critical point drying, and freeze substitution) used in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were evaluated with respect to the degree of cellular distortion they produce in stomatal guard cells of leaves of Dactylis glomerata and Elymus canadensis. Surface morphological distortion and cuticle disruption in the air-dried and tetramethylsilane air-dried leaves, and cuticle disruption within the critical point-dried tissue made it difficult to obtain measurements. The freeze-substituted tissue experienced little cuticle disturbance, and the cellular morphology appeared normal. The length of the guard cells did not significantly differ between the air-dried, tetramethylsilane air-dried, critical …

(Excerpt)
Primary jurisdiction and preemption issues arise in securities class action litigation when alleged violations of state law arise from conduct that is either explicitly or implicitly regulated by the federal securities laws.
These are two distinct theories: one is a matter of administrative law and judicial economy (primary jurisdiction); the other is a matter of constitutional law involving the Supremacy Clause (preemption). To date, there has not been extensive case law involving preemption and the federal securities laws (other than in the blue sky and tender offer areas) and there has been almost no case law on primary jurisdiction …

This paper reports the cross section measurements for the process ep → e J/ψ p for Q2 < 4 GeV2 at s = 296 GeV, based on an integrated luminosity of about 0.5 pb-1, using the ZEUS detector. The J/ψ was detected in its e+e- and μ+μ- decay modes. The photoproduction cross section was measured to be 52-12+7 ± 10 nb at an average γp centre of mass energy of 67 GeV and 71-20+13±12 nb at 114 GeV. The significant rise of the cross section compared to lower energy measurements is not in agreement with VDM models, but can be described by QCD inspired models if a rise in the gluon momentum density at low x in the proton is assumed. © 1995.

Optimization Approach To The Treatment Of Open Boundary-Conditions, I. Shulman, James K. Lewis

A solution to an optimization problem is developed that deals with minimizing a measure of difference between the values of observed and predicted variables at an open ocean boundary. Minimization is based on the change of the flux of energy through the open boundary. It is shown that many of the longwave radiation conditions that are commonly used in ocean modeling can be derived using this optimization criteria. However, the minimization process is seen to produce a modification of these radiation conditions in that they are multiplied by a coefficient, which allows the conditions to adapt to a change in …

This article is a summary of parts of Lee's forthcoming article "Critique of Current Congressional Capital Gains Contentions," 15 Va. Tax. L. Rev. 1 (1995). Professor Lee believes that the reasons given by the House Ways and Means Committee Report and capital gains cuts proponents in the recent hearings and the House floor debate in support of the CWATRA 50-percent individual generic capital gains cut are untrue in whole or in part. These stated reasons, reports Lee, are that a capital gains cut will (1) increase the personal savings rate, (2) encourage risk taking by entrepreneurs seeking new technologies and …

Presents a class of binary primitive BCH codes that have unequal-error-protection (UEP) capabilities. The authors use a previous result on the span of their minimum weight vectors to show that binary primitive BCH codes, containing second-order punctured Reed-Muller (RM) codes of the same minimum distance, are binary-cyclic UEP codes. The values of the error correction levels for this class of binary LUEP codes are estimated.
