The Proper Role Of The Estate And Gift Taxation Of Closely Held Businesses, Eric D. Chason, Robert T. Danforth Apr 1997

The Proper Role Of The Estate And Gift Taxation Of Closely Held Businesses, Eric D. Chason, Robert T. Danforth

Faculty Publications

The authors argue that the goals of estate and gift taxation are not served by taxing closely held businesses when the recipient of the business actively participates in its operation. Further, the authors suggest that taxing closely held businesses tends to harm capital production. The authors propose an approach to estate and gift taxation that encourages productive behavior by the recipients of wealth.

Substitutions At Position 146 Of Cytochrome B Affect Drastically The Properties Of Heme B(L) And The Q(O) Site Of Rhodobacter Capsulatus Cytochrome Bc1 Complex, A. Sami Saribaş, Huangen Ding, P. Leslie Dutton, Fevzi Daldal Mar 1997

Faculty Publications

The cytochrome (cyt) b subunit of ubihydroquinone: cytochrome c oxidoreductase(bc1 complex) contains four invariant glycine (G) residues proposed to be essential for proper packing of the high and low potential (b(H) and b(L)) hemes of the bc1 complex. One of these residues, G146 located in the transmembrane helix C of cyt b of Rhodobacter capsulatus, was substituted with A and V using site-directed mutagenesis, and the effects of these substitutions on the properties of the ubiquinone oxidation (Q(o)) site and heme b(L) of the bc1 complex were analyzed. The mutants G146A and V produced properly assembled but catalytically defective bc1 …

A Soil-Canopy-Atmosphere Model For Use In Satellite Microwave Remote Sensing, Venkataraman Lakshmi, Eric F. Wood, Bhaskar J. Choudhury Mar 1997

A Soil-Canopy-Atmosphere Model For Use In Satellite Microwave Remote Sensing, Venkataraman Lakshmi, Eric F. Wood, Bhaskar J. Choudhury

Faculty Publications

Regional and global scale studies of land-surface-atmosphere interactions require the use of observations for calibration and validation. In situ field observations are not representative of the distributed nature of land surface characteristics, and large-scale field experiments are expensive undertakings. In light of these requirements and shortcomings, satellite observations serve our purposes adequately. The use of satellite data in land surface modeling requires developing a hydrological model with a thin upper layer to be compatible with the nature of the satellite observations and that would evaluate the soil moisture and soil temperature of a thin layer close to the surface. This …

A search for neutrino oscillations of the type ν̄μ → ν̄c has been conducted at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility using ν̄μ from muon decay at rest. Evidence for this transition has been reported previously. This paper discusses in detail the experimental setup, detector operation and neutrino source, including aspects relevant to oscillation searches in the muon decay-at-rest and pion decay in flight channels.

Matroids Arisen From Matrogenic Graphs, Guoli Ding, Peter L. Hammer Mar 1997

Matroids Arisen From Matrogenic Graphs, Guoli Ding, Peter L. Hammer

Faculty Publications

Let G be a finite simple graph and let ℐ(G) be the set of subsets X of V(G) such that the subgraph of G induced by X is threshold. If ℐ(G) is the independence system of a matroid, then G is called matrogenic [3]. In this paper, we characterize matroids arising from matrogenic graphs.

Native And Multimeric Vitronectin Exhibit Similar Affinity For Heparin: Differences In Heparin Binding Properties Induced Upon Denaturation Are Due To Self-Association Into A Multivalent Form, Ping Zhuang, Anthony I. Chen, Cynthia B. Peterson Mar 1997

Peterson

Faculty Publications

For many years, the concept that the heparin-binding sequence is sequestered within vitronectin and exposed upon denaturation of the protein has guided experimental design and interpretation of related structure- function studies on the protein. To evaluate binding of heparin to both native and denatured/renatured vitronectin, methods for monitoring binding in solution have been developed. A fluorescence method based on changes in an extrinsic probe attached to heparin has been used to evaluate heparin binding to native and denatured/renatured vitronectin. This approach indicates that there are not major differences in intrinsic heparin-binding affinities between native and renatured protein and invalidate the …

Wetland Loss In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico: Multiple Working Hypotheses, R. Eugene Turner Mar 1997

Wetland Loss In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico: Multiple Working Hypotheses, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

I examined four hypotheses about causes for the dramatically high coastal wetland losses (0.86% yr−1) in the northern Gulf of Mexico: an extensive dredged canal and spoil bank network, a decline in sediments in the Mississippi River during the 1950s, Mississippi River navigation and flood protection levees, and salinity changes. Natural factors contributing to these habitat changes include eustatic sea-level rise and geological compaction, which appear to have remained relatively constant this century, although variation does occur. These four hypotheses were tested using data on land-to-water changes in 15-min quadrangle maps inventoried for four intervals between the 1930s and 1990. …

Predicate Union And The Syntax Of Japanese Passives, Stanley Dubinsky Mar 1997

Predicate Union And The Syntax Of Japanese Passives, Stanley Dubinsky

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a relational account of the Japanese constructions that are commonly referred to as ‘passives’. They are shown to all be multipredicate, monoclausal constructions, with the differences between them primarily attributable to optionality in the lexical argument structure of the ‘passive’ predicate. The proposed analysis explains the differences between passives and causatives, despite their sometimes identical case-marking. Further, evidence from the interaction of unaccusative verbs and passive is shown to lead to a formal revision of the 1-Advancement Exclusiveness law. Finally, the differences between Japanese and Korean with respect to passives is reduced to a simple lexical difference …

The Use Of Fluorescent Probes To Characterize Conformational Changes In The Interaction Between Vitronectin And Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1, Angelia Gibson, Kunnumal Baburaj, Duane E. Day, Ingrid Verhamme, Joseph D. Shore, Cynthia B. Peterson Feb 1997

Peterson

Faculty Publications

Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), the primary inhibitor of tissue-type plasminogen activator and urokinase, is known to convert readily to a latent form by insertion of the reactive center loop into a central β- sheet. Interaction with vitronectin stabilizes PAI-1 and decreases the rate of conversion to the latent form, but conformational effects of vitronectin on the reactive center loop of PAI-1 have not been documented. Mutant forms of PAI-1 were designed with a cysteine substitution at either position P1' or P9 of the reactive center loop. Labeling of the unique cysteine with a sulfhydryl-reactive fluorophore provides a probe that is …
