Evolutionary Effects Of Irradiation In Cataclysmic Variables, P. Mccormick, J. Frank Jan 1998

Evolutionary Effects Of Irradiation In Cataclysmic Variables, P. Mccormick, J. Frank

Faculty Publications

The orbital evolution of cataclysmic variables in which the companion is illuminated by a fraction of the accretion luminosity consists of irradiation-driven limit cycles on thermal timescales, superimposed on secular evolution toward shorter periods due to systemic angular momentum losses. We show that positive orbital period derivatives during bright phases are a natural consequence of the expansion of the companion during high mass transfer phases in the limit cycle. The irradiation instability may be enhanced by consequential angular momentum losses J̇CAML accompanying the limit cycle. We investigate the secular evolution of cataclysmic binaries under the combined effects of irradiation and …

A Physical Model Of Warped Galaxy Disks, Kimberly C.B. New, Joel E. Tohline, Juhan Frank, Horst M. Väth

Faculty Publications

Warped H 1 gas layers in the outer regions of spiral galaxies usually display a noticeably twisted structure. This structure almost certainly arises primarily as a result of differential precession in the H I disk as it settles toward a preferred orientation in an underlying dark halo potential well that is not spherically symmetric. In an attempt to better understand the structure and evolution of these twisted, warped disk structures, we have adopted the "twist equation" formalism originally developed by Petterson to study accretion onto compact objects. Utilizing more recent treatments of this formalism, we have generalized the twist equation …

Chemical Treatments To Control Erwinia Soft Rot Of Calla Rhizomes, Jeff S. Kuehny, Gordon E. Holcomb, Wen Chy Chang, Patricia C. Branch

Faculty Publications

Dimethyl ammonium chloride (DAC, 'Triathlon'), sodium hypochlorite, formaldehyde, and streptomycin ('Agri-mycin 17') were used as dips to treat Zantedeschia rehmannii superba Engl., Zantedeschia elliotiana xmaculata (Hook.) Engl., and Zantedeschia albomaculata (W.Wats.) Baill. rhizomes to control Erwinia soft rot. A 30 rain 200 ppm (mg.L-1) streptomycin dip provided the best control of Erwinia soft rot for all three Zantedeschia species and a 1-hour 10% formaldehyde dip provided the second best control of inoculated rhizomes. Rhizomes inoculated with Erwinia required more days to emerge. Chemical treatments did not affect days to emergence or final plant growth.

Hothouse Bothers: A Case Study, Jeff S. Kuehny, Margaret J. Mcmahon Jan 1998

Hothouse Bothers: A Case Study, Jeff S. Kuehny, Margaret J. Mcmahon

Faculty Publications

This decision case concerns production and marketing problems that many ornamental growers incur. At the retail level, popular ornamental crops are often used as loss leaders to draw the public into stores to make other purchases. As a result, retail buyers are concerned not with quality but with price and volume. To meet the needs of price-conscious buyers, growers may attempt to reduce their production costs by reducing the level of production inputs, with some sacrifice in product quality. The owners of Two Sisters Greenhouses must decide whether they are going to produce lower-quality plants, change marketing strategies, or grow …

Anatomical Description Of The Fruit-Receptacle Detachment Area In Cayenne Pepper, Kay P. Gersch, Carl E. Motsenbocker, Gregory A. Lang Jan 1998

Anatomical Description Of The Fruit-Receptacle Detachment Area In Cayenne Pepper, Kay P. Gersch, Carl E. Motsenbocker, Gregory A. Lang

Faculty Publications

Of eight genotypes of cayenne pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) examined, two were identified that differ significantly in ease of fruit detachment force. Greenhouse and field-grown plants of these genotypes, Cajun 1-9027 and Cap-9004, were investigated for differences in cell type and organization at the fruit and receptacle junction. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that mature Cajun 1-9027 fruit that did not separate exhibited a distinct region of sclerified cells that extended from the periphery of the fruit into the receptacle for 25 to 30 cell layers. In contrast, mature fruit of the more readily detachable Cap-9004 had 10 to 15 layers …

A Tgms-Linked Nuclear Dna Marker As Originated From The Mitochondrial Genome In Rice (Oryza Sativa L.), Prasanta K. Subudhi, Sant S. Virmani, Ning Huang Jan 1998

A Tgms-Linked Nuclear Dna Marker As Originated From The Mitochondrial Genome In Rice (Oryza Sativa L.), Prasanta K. Subudhi, Sant S. Virmani, Ning Huang

Faculty Publications

A nuclear RAPD marker, OPF182600, was linked to a thermosensitive genetic male sterility (TGMS) gene (tms3) in a rice mutant line IR32364TGMS. Segregation analysis in two mapping populations and reciprocal cross analysis involving different genotypes indicated, however, that this marker was maternally inherited. The RAPD marker was then cloned as pF18 and partially sequenced from both ends of the insert. Sequence analysis showed that pF18 was homologous to mitochondrial genes, cob2 and nad1. Evidence was provided that the cob2 DNA segment near pF18 was genetically linked to tms3. Thus pF18 could be the result of integration of a piece of …

Variations In The Secondary Metabolite Camptothecin In Relation To Tissue Age And Season In Camptotheca Acuminata, Zhijun Liu, Stanley B. Carpenter, Wayne J. Bourgeois, Ying Yu, Roysell J. Constantin, Matthew J. Falcon, John C. Adams Jan 1998

Variations In The Secondary Metabolite Camptothecin In Relation To Tissue Age And Season In Camptotheca Acuminata, Zhijun Liu, Stanley B. Carpenter, Wayne J. Bourgeois, Ying Yu, Roysell J. Constantin, Matthew J. Falcon, John C. Adams

Faculty Publications

We investigated variation in concentration of the secondary metabolite, camptothecin (CPT), in relation to leaf, branch and tree age, season, and leaf drying method in Camptotheca acuminata Decaisne saplings. Younger leaves contained higher CPT concentrations than older leaves. Within a branch, there was a linear decline in CPT concentration from leaves at the apex of the branch down to Leaf 7. Comparing leaves of similar age, those from younger trees had higher CPT concentrations than those from older trees. Over the course of the growing season, there was a steady decline of 11% per month in leaf CPT concentration. Branches …

Natural Infection Of Salvia Uliginosa With Cucumber Mosaic Cucumovirus, G. E. Holcomb, R. A. Valverde

Faculty Publications

Salvia uliginosa Benth. plants, in an experimental planting of Salvia species, exhibited virus-like symptoms of chlorotic line patterns and ringspots. The suspect virus was mechanically transmitted to several experimental hosts and was identified as cucumber mosaic cucumovirus (CMV) based on dsRNA gel patterns, positive reaction with CMV antiserum, and particle morphology as observed by transmission electron microscopy.

Sex Ratio Variation Between Ejaculates Within Sire Evaluated By Polymerase Chain Reaction, Calving, And Farrowing Records, J. E. Chandler, H. C. Steinholt-Chenevert, R. W. Adkinson, E. B. Moser

Faculty Publications

Ejaculates from sires were examined by polymerase chain reaction to determine percentage of sperm bearing the Y chromosome. Results were verified by examining the percentage of male calves per ejaculate used in artificial insemination (AI) and the percentage of male piglets per litter from a controlled mating program. Spermatozoal DNA was amplified by polymerase chain reaction with specific primers for the Y chromosome. Image analysis measured the fluorescent intensity of the 194-bp band. Ejaculates were compared with a pooled standard of spermatozoal DNA equated to a 50% Y-bearing sperm ejaculate. Calving data were obtained from information collected for the National …

Removal Of Bovine Serum Albumin From Cow's Milk Using Chicken Egg-Yolk Antibodies Immobilized On Chitosan Gel, Jack N. Losso, John Vanderstoep, Shuryo Nakai Jan 1998

Removal Of Bovine Serum Albumin From Cow's Milk Using Chicken Egg-Yolk Antibodies Immobilized On Chitosan Gel, Jack N. Losso, John Vanderstoep, Shuryo Nakai

Faculty Publications

Polyclonal chicken antibodies raised against bovine serum albumin (BSA) were immobilized on chitosan gel for the immunoaffinity isolation of BSA from cow's milk. Antibodies (IgY) against BSA were isolated from egg-yolk, purified and antibody reactivity to antigen was measured. lgY developed against BSA was reduced by 2-mercaptoethylamine. The reactivities of reduced and whole IgY against BSA were not significantly different. The reduced IgY was covalently linked to chitosan gel through stable covalent thioether linkages using sulfo-succinimidyl-4-(N-maleimidomethyl)cyclohexane-1-carboxylate (sulfo-SMCC) as a cross-linker. The density of antibody IgY immobilized on chitosan gel was approximately 3-5 mg per ml of chitosan gel. The ligand-binding …

Controlling Growth Of Common Carpetgrass Using Selected Plant Growth Regulators, Edward W. Bush, Wayne C. Porter, Dennis P. Shepard, James N. Mccrimmon Jan 1998

Controlling Growth Of Common Carpetgrass Using Selected Plant Growth Regulators, Edward W. Bush, Wayne C. Porter, Dennis P. Shepard, James N. Mccrimmon

Faculty Publications

Field studies were performed on established carpetgrass (Axonopus affinis Chase) in 1994 and 1995 to evaluate plant growth regulators (PGRs) and application rates. Trinexapac-ethyl (0.48 kg·ha-1) improved turf quality and reduced cumulative vegetative growth (CVG) of unmowed and mowed plots by 38% and 46%, respectively, in 1995, and suppressed seedhead height in unmowed turf by >31% 6 weeks after treatment (WAT) both years. Mefluidide (0.14 and 0.28 kg·ha-1) had little effect on carpetgrass. Sulfometuron resulted in unacceptable phytotoxicity (>20%) 2 WAT in 1994 and 18% phytotoxicity in 1995. In 1995, sulfometuron reduced mowed carpetgrass CVG 21%, seedhead number 47%, …

Shell Model Calculations For Heavy Deformed Nuclei, J. G. Hirsch, O. Castaños, P. O. Hess, O. Civitarese, D. Troltenier, T. Beuschel, J. P. Draayer, D. Rompf, Y. Sun

Faculty Publications

The pseudo SU(3) model is shown to be a powerful scheme for describing the excitation spectra as well as B(E2) and 5(M1) transition strengths in heavy deformed nuclei. It is also useful for describing double beta decay amplitudes for transitions from the ground state of an even-even nucleus to the ground and excited states of the daughter nucleus, both for the two and zero neutrino emitting modes. The existence of selection rules which strongly restricts the decays is discussed. Anti-correlations between the quadrupole deformation and the Gamow-Teller (GT+) strength are found in an extension of the pseudo SU(3) …

Correlation Function Formulation For The State Selected Total Reaction Probability, Sophya V. Garashchuk, D. J. Tannor Jan 1998

Correlation Function Formulation For The State Selected Total Reaction Probability, Sophya V. Garashchuk, D. J. Tannor

Faculty Publications

A correlation function formulation for the state-selected total reaction probability, Nα(E), is suggested. A wave packet, correlating with a specific set of internal reactant quantum numbers, α, is propagated forward in time until bifurcation is complete at which time the nonreactive portion of the amplitude is discarded. The autocorrelation function of the remaining amplitude is then computed and Fourier transformed to obtain a reactivity spectrum. Dividing by the corresponding spectrum of the original, unfiltered, wave packet normalizes the reactivity spectrum, yielding the total reaction probability from the internal state, α. The procedure requires negligible storage and just one time-energy Fourier …

Evidence In The Global Village: The Promise And Challenge Of Computer-Assisted Research In Intercollegiate Debate, Pat J. Gehrke

Faculty Publications

The growing importance of research databases and the proliferation of evidence sources on the Internet have provoked responses from the debate community ranging from ecstatic hope to pronounced fear. The debate community should critically incorporate databases and the Internet into its research. The benefits of computer-assisted research are plentiful, if we can appropriately adjust as a community to the age of digitized research.

Sr‐ And Ni‐Doped Lacoo3 And Lafeo3 Perovskites: New Cathode Materials For Solid‐Oxide Fuel Cells, Kevin Huang, Hee Y. Lee, John B. Goodenough

Faculty Publications

An improved cathode material for a solid‐oxide fuel cell would be a mixed electronic and oxide‐ion conductor with a good catalytic activity for oxygen reduction at an operating temperature T op ≥ 700°C and a thermal expansion matched to that of the electrolyte and interconnect. We report on the properties of Sr‐ and Ni‐doped LaCoO3 and LaFeO3 perovskites that meet these criteria. Single‐phase regions were determined by X‐ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis measurements were used to obtain the temperatures above which oxygen loss, and hence oxide‐ion conductivity, occurs. The conductivity and Seebeck measurements indicate the coexistence of both …

Gone But Not Conforming: Protecting The Abhorrent Testator From Majoritarian Cultural Norms Through Minority-Culture Arbitration, E. Gary Spitko

Faculty Publications

In a variety of contexts, cultural minorities have cause to fear adjudication of their legal rights and responsibilities in a legal system dominated by majority-culture personnel (most notably including judges and jurors). This is particularly true when cultural minorities attempt to use formal legal processes to give effect to choices that are inconsistent with prevailing community norms. In such cases, the substantive merit of their legal claims is at risk of being subjugated to majoritarian values, through a process that relies on members of the majority culture to vindicate the substantive rights at issue. This phenomenon presents a cruel dilemma: …

The Definition Of Crimes Against Humanity: Resolving The Incoherence, Beth Van Schaack

Faculty Publications

This Article discusses the contours of the prohibition of crimes against humanity with reference to proceedings before the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and deliberations at the Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Establishment of an International Criminal Court (ICC). Because the contemporary status of this offense under international law cannot be understood or appreciated without reference to its history, this Article traces the evolution of the concept of crimes against humanity with particular reference to the genesis and re-interpretation of the war nexus requirement. A recurrent theme in this narrative is the search for an element …
