Desert, Utility, And Minimum Contacts: Toward A Mixed Theory Of Personal Jurisdiction, Kevin C. Mcmunigal Jan 1998

Desert, Utility, And Minimum Contacts: Toward A Mixed Theory Of Personal Jurisdiction, Kevin C. Mcmunigal

Faculty Publications

In this Essay, I suggest several steps to improve the Supreme Court's approach to minimum contacts analysis. Though they necessitate some modification of current doctrine, these steps require neither radical alteration of the test's current factors nor abandonment of any of its purposes. I propose a new way of looking at the Court's minimum contacts analysis that better explains and integrates the factors, temporal perspectives, and purposes that presently figure in the analysis. My approach draws on criminal law, analogizing a state's imposition of the burdens of jurisdiction to its imposition of a criminal sanction. It sees the minimum contacts …

Substrate Oxidation And Energy Expenditure In Athletes And Nonathletes Consuming Isoenergetic High- And Low-Fat Diets, Heli J. Roy, Jennifer C. Lovejoy, Michael J. Keenan, George A. Bray, Marlene M. Windhauser, J. Krause Wilson Jan 1998

Substrate Oxidation And Energy Expenditure In Athletes And Nonathletes Consuming Isoenergetic High- And Low-Fat Diets, Heli J. Roy, Jennifer C. Lovejoy, Michael J. Keenan, George A. Bray, Marlene M. Windhauser, J. Krause Wilson

Faculty Publications

Changes in substrate oxidation with isoenergetic high-carbohydrate (HC) and high-fat (HF) diets in male nonathletic subjects, aerobically trained athletes, and weight-trained athletes were examined in a crossover study. A whole-room respiration chamber was used to measure 24-h energy expenditure (EE) and substrate oxidation with control, He, or HF diets for 7 d. The nonathletic group had higher 24-h EE (P < 0.05), exercise EE (P < 0.03), and resting metabolic rate (P < 0.04) than did the aerobically trained athletes when these measurements were corrected for lean body mass. Fat oxidation was significantly correlated with lean body mass and diet. However, athletic status had no effect on substrate oxidation. Carbohydrate oxidation across groups increased acutely by 23% after 24 h of the HC diet (P < 0.0001). Carbohydrate balance increased significantly over time with the HC diet (P < 0.002) and decreased acutely after return to the control diet (P < 0.0001). With the HF diet, carbohydrate balance increased and was significantly different from balance with the control diet by day 7 (P < 0.03). Fat balance decreased significantly with both the HF (P < 0.04) and HC (P = 0.0075) diets by day 7. Carbohydrate oxidation correlated with carbohydrate intake with both the control (r = 0.61, P < 0.01) and HC diets (r = 0.59, P < 0.02), but not the HF diet. Fat oxidation was not correlated with fat intake. In conclusion, substrate oxidation in a respiration chamber is significantly affected by diet, but not by prior athletic training.

Spatiotemporal Autoregressive Models Of Neighborhood Effects, R. Kelley Pace, Ronald Barry, John M. Clapp, Mauricio Rodriquez Jan 1998

Spatiotemporal Autoregressive Models Of Neighborhood Effects, R. Kelley Pace, Ronald Barry, John M. Clapp, Mauricio Rodriquez

Faculty Publications

Using 70,822 observations on housing prices from 1969 to 1991 from Fairfax County Virginia, this article demonstrates the substantial benefits obtained by modeling the spatial as well as the temporal dependence of the data. Specifically, the spatiotemporal autoregression with twelve variables reduced median absolute error by 37.35% relative to an indicator-based model with twenty-six variables. One-step ahead forecasts also document the improved performance of the proposed spatiotemporal model. In addition, the article illustrates techniques for rapidly computing the estimates and shows how to compute indices for any location.

Evaluation Of The Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (Adv) For Turbulence Measurements, George Voulgaris, John H. Trowbridge Jan 1998

Evaluation Of The Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (Adv) For Turbulence Measurements, George Voulgaris, John H. Trowbridge

Faculty Publications

Accuracy of the acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) is evaluated in this paper. Simultaneous measurements of open-channel flow were undertaken in a 17-m flume using an ADV and a laser Doppler velocimeter. Flow velocity records obtained by both instruments are used for estimating the true (‘‘ground truth’’) flow characteristics and the noise variances encountered during the experimental runs. The measured values are compared with estimates of the true flow characteristics and values of variance (^u92&, ^w92&) and covariance (^u9w9&) predicted by semiempirical models for open-channel flow. The analysis showed that the ADV sensor can measure mean velocity and Reynolds stress within …

Labor Market Responses To Rising Health Insurance Costs: Evidence On Hours Worked, David M. Cutler, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 1998

Labor Market Responses To Rising Health Insurance Costs: Evidence On Hours Worked, David M. Cutler, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

Increases in the cost of providing health insurance must have some effect on labor markets, either in lower wages, changes in the composition of employment, or both. Despite a presumption that most of this effect will be in the fonn of lower wages, we document in this paper a significant effect on work hours as well. Using data from the CPS and the SIPP, we show that rising health insurance costs over the 1980s increased the hours worked of those with health insurance by up to 3 percent. We argue that this occurs because health insurance is a fixed cost, …

A Mathematical Model For Fibroblast And Collagen Orientation, J. C. Dallon, J. A. Sherratt Jan 1998

A Mathematical Model For Fibroblast And Collagen Orientation, J. C. Dallon, J. A. Sherratt

Faculty Publications

Due to the increasing importance of the extracellular matrix in many biological problems, in this paper we develop a model for fibroblast and collagen orientation with the ultimate objective of understanding how fibroblasts form and remodel the extracellular matrix, in particular its collagen component. The model uses integro-differential equations to describe the interaction between the cells and fibers at a point in space with various orientations. The equations are studied both analytically and numerically to discover different types of solutions and their behavior. In particular we examine solutions where all the fibroblasts and collagen have discrete orientations, a localized continuum …

Implicit Feedback For Recommender Systems, Douglas W. Oard, Jinmook Kim Jan 1998

Implicit Feedback For Recommender Systems, Douglas W. Oard, Jinmook Kim

Faculty Publications

Can implicit feedback substitute for explicit ratings in recommender systems? If so, we could avoid the difficulties associated with gathering explicit ratings from users. How, then, can we capture useful information unobtrusively, and how might we use that information to make recommendations? In this paper we identify three types of implicit feedback and suggest two strategies for using implicit feedback to make recommendations.

"To Gloss Or Not To Gloss": An Investigation Of Reading Comprehension Online, Lara Lomicka Jan 1998

"To Gloss Or Not To Gloss": An Investigation Of Reading Comprehension Online, Lara Lomicka

Faculty Publications

This pilot study investigated the effects of multimedia reading software on reading comprehension. Specifically, the study aimed to explore how multimedia annotations influence the level of comprehension. Twelve college students enrolled in a second semester French course were instructed to think aloud during the reading of text on the computer screen. Participants read the text under one of three conditions: full glossing, limited glossing, or no glossing. In addition, a tracker was set up in the software to record the amount and type of glosses, and length of time that each was consulted. The raw data clearly indicate an increase …

Proton Diffusion In Nickel Hydroxide: Prediction Of Active Material Utilization, Sathya Motupally, Christopher C. Streinz, John W. Weidner Jan 1998

Proton Diffusion In Nickel Hydroxide: Prediction Of Active Material Utilization, Sathya Motupally, Christopher C. Streinz, John W. Weidner

Faculty Publications

Galvanostatic charge and discharge experiments reveal that the active material in nickel electrodes cannot be fully accessed at high currents or for thick films. It has been proposed that the utilization of the active material is controlled by the diffusion rate of protons through the film. This hypothesis is supported by the good agreement between mathematical simulations of material utilization and experimental data over a range of charge and discharge currents and film thicknesses. Furthermore, the fraction of material utilized is larger on charge than on discharge. The asymmetry on charge and discharge is due to a diffusion coefficient that …

Chromium Oxides And Lithiated Chromium Oxides. Promising Cathode Materials For Secondary Lithium Batteries, Pankaj Arora, Dong Zhang, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White Jan 1998

Chromium Oxides And Lithiated Chromium Oxides. Promising Cathode Materials For Secondary Lithium Batteries, Pankaj Arora, Dong Zhang, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

Chromium oxides and lithiated chromium oxides were synthesized by thermal decomposition of chromium trioxide (CrO3) at high temperatures and oxygen pressures. Synthesis temperature and pressure markedly affect the performance of these cathode materials. Higher pressures lead to a higher O/Cr ratio and fewer impurities in the final product. These materials are stable intercalation hosts for lithium, and exhibit a higher capacity than any of the prominent positive electrodes used in secondary lithium batteries. m-CrOx has a capacity of 255 mAh/g, while m-LiCrOx has a capacity of 210 mAh/g, during the first discharge. The average …

Ab Initio Study Of Formazan And 3-Nitroformazan, G. Buemi, F. Zuccarello, P. Venuvanalingam, M. Ramalingam, Salai Cheettu Ammal

Faculty Publications

Formazan and 3-nitroformazan have been investigated at abinitio level (MP2/6-31G** and B3LYP/6-31G**) in all their possible conformations, for studying the various possibilities of intramolecular hydrogen bonding formation. The trans-syn-s-cis (TSSC), known also asyellowform, has been found to be the most stable conformer (at least in the gas phase) in both compounds. This particular structure is strongly stabilized by a N–H···N hydrogen bridge, which gives rise to a hexatomic chelate ring, with the possibility of a proton transfer process. This closely resembles that of malondialdehyde, previously studied, in the evolution of the …

Hematite And Calcite Coatings On Fossil Vertebrates, B. A.O. Huiming, Paul L. Koch, Robert P. Hepple Jan 1998

Hematite And Calcite Coatings On Fossil Vertebrates, B. A.O. Huiming, Paul L. Koch, Robert P. Hepple

Faculty Publications

Hematite coatings are common on vertebrate fossils from Paleocene/Eocene paleosol deposits in the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. In general, hematite coatings are found only on fossils and are limited to soils exhibiting hydromorphic features and moderate maturity. Pétrographie and isotopic evidence suggests that hematite and micritic calcite formed at nearly the same time in a pedogenic environment, whereas sparry calcite formed later at greater burial depths. The parent material of paleosols is rich in iron, supplying an ample source of iron for hematite formation. Decomposition of animal tissues around bones may enhance the weathering of iron-bearing minerals in soils surrounding carcasses, …

First-Principles Determination Of Elastic Properties Of Casio3 Perovskite At Lower Mantle Pressures, Bijaya B. Karki, Jason Crain

Faculty Publications

We investigate the equation of state and elasticity of cubic CaSiO perovskite up to 140 GPa using the plane wave pseudopotential method within the local density approximation. The calculated equation of state parameters of the cubic phase are in excellent agreement with those from recent quasi-hydrostatic compression data and from all-electron linearized augmented plane wave calculations. We determine the elastic constant tensor of the mineral from the calculated stress-strain relations. The bulk modulus of CaSiO perovskite is similar to that of MgSiO perovskite, however, its shear modulus is much higher at pressures corresponding to the lower mantle. This suggests that …

Apatite Fission Track Analysis Of Sites 959 And 960 On The Transform Continental Margin Of Ghana, West Africa, P. D. Clift, A. Carter, A. J. Hurford

Faculty Publications

Four samples of sandstone from deformed Aptian-Albian sediments and their less deformed Turonian cover at Sites 959 and 960 on the Cote d'Ivoire-Ghana Marginal Ridge yielded sufficient apatite for fission track analysis. Reduced mean track length values of 12.42 ± 0.16 μm to 13.67 ± 0.11 μm indicate that measured central ages, which range from 88 ± 4 Ma to 113 ± 4 Ma, have undergone partial resetting and are therefore apparent ages. Stochastic modeling of the fission track age and length parameters indicate that the samples have a strong predepositional signal, slightly modified by minor levels of prolonged post-depositional …

Interlaboratory Comparison Of Electron Probe Microanalysis Of Glass Geochemistry, J. B. Hunt, P. D. Clift, C. Lacasse, T. L. Vallier, R. Werner Jan 1998

Interlaboratory Comparison Of Electron Probe Microanalysis Of Glass Geochemistry, J. B. Hunt, P. D. Clift, C. Lacasse, T. L. Vallier, R. Werner

Faculty Publications

Tephrochronology commonly relies upon grain-discrete analysis of glass shards to reveal the subtle geochemical differences between tephras from past explosive volcanic eruptions. The use of electron probe microanalysis for this purpose is widely accepted by tephrochronologists. In addition, it is recognized widely that both precision and accuracy must be maximized, and that rigorous standardization procedures must be followed. In this paper, the performance of five electron microprobe centers used in the analysis of glass sharts from Leg 152 tephras is compared, using a geochemically homogeneous obsidian secondary standard. The results reveal the compatibility of most of the participatnats, supporting the …

Compilation Techniques For Out-Of-Core Parallel Computations, M. Kandemir, A. Choudhary, J. Ramanujam, R. Bordawekar

Faculty Publications

The difficulty of handling out-of-core data limits the performance of supercomputers as well as the potential of the parallel machines. Since writing an efficient out-of-core version of a program is a difficult task and virtual memory systems do not perform well on scientific computations, we believe that there is a clear need for compiler directed explicit I/O approach for out-of-core computations. In this paper, we first present an out-of-core compilation strategy based on a disk storage abstraction. Then, we offer a compiler algorithm to optimize locality of disk accesses in out-of-core codes by choosing a good combination of file layouts …
