Overt And Relational Aggression In Russian Nursery-School-Age Children: Parenting Style And Marital Linkages., C. H. Hart, D. A. Nelson, C. C. Robinson, S. F. Olsen, M. K. Mcneilly-Choque

Faculty Publications

Maternal and paternal parenting styles and marital interactions linked to childhood aggressive behavior as described in Western psychological literature were measured in an ethnic Russian sample of 207 families of nursery-school-age children. Results corroborated and extended findings from Western samples. Maternal and paternal coercion, lack of responsiveness, and psychological control (for mothers only) were significantly correlated with children's overt aggression with peers. Less responsiveness (for mothers and fathers) and maternal coercion positively correlated with relational aggression. Some of these associations differed for boys versus girls. Marital conflict was also linked to more overt and relational aggression for boys. When entered …

Sympatric Sea Shells Along The Sea's Shore: The Geography Of Speciation In The Marine Gastropod Tegula, Michael E. Hellberg Jan 1998

Sympatric Sea Shells Along The Sea's Shore: The Geography Of Speciation In The Marine Gastropod Tegula, Michael E. Hellberg

Faculty Publications

Uncertainty and controversy surround the geographical and ecological circumstances that create genetic differences between populations that eventually lead to reproductive isolation. Two aspects of marine organisms further complicate this situation: (1) many species possess planktonic larvae capable of great dispersal; and (2) obvious barriers to movement between populations are rare. Past studies of speciation in the sea have focussed on identifying the effects of past land barriers and on biogeographical breakpoints. However, assessing the role such undeniable barriers actually play in the initial divergence leading to reproductive isolation requires phylogenetic studies of recent radiations living in varying degrees of sympatry …

Objectives. The purpose of this study was to assess the mortality pattern of the adult Hispanic population in the United States. Methods. This was a cohort study using data from the National Health Interview Survey from 1986 through 1990. Deaths were ascertained by matching to the National Death Index through 1991. Results. This representative national sample included 297 640 non-Hispanic Whites, 53 552 Blacks, and 27 239 Hispanics, all aged 18 years or older at baseline. Different matching criteria resulted in modest differential estimates of the number of deaths by ethnic group; these differences were quantitatively more important for Hispanics. …

The Relation Between Income And Mortality In U.S. Blacks And Whites, Jay S. Kaufman, Andrew E. Long, Youlian Liao, Richard S. Cooper, Daniel L. Mcgee

Faculty Publications

Differential mortality exists in the United States both between racial/ethnic groups and along gradients of socioeconomic status. The specification of statistical models for processes underlying these observed disparities has been hindered by the fact that social and economic quantities are distributed in a highly nonrandom manner throughout the population. We sought to provide a substantive foundation for model development by representing the shape of the income-mortality relation by racial/ethnic group. We used data on black and white men and women from the longitudinal component of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), 1986-1990, which provided 1,191,824 person-years of follow-up and 12,165 …

Leptin And Body Composition Of Nigerians, Jamaicans, And Us Blacks, Amy H. Luke, Charles N. Rotimi, Richard S. Cooper, Andrew E. Long, Terrence E. Forrester, Rainford Wilks, Franklyn I. Bennett, Olufemi Ogunbiyi, Joyce A. Compton, Ronald R. Bowsher

Faculty Publications

The role of leptin in humans remains controversial. Leptin concentrations are highly correlated with body fat stores. We tested whether or not this relation was consistent across the range of body composition encompassing the lean as well as the obese. Individuals participating in community-based comparative research in Nigeria (n = 363), Jamaica (n = 372), and the United States (Maywood, IL; n = 699) had their plasma leptin concentrations and body compositions (with bioelectrical impedance analysis) measured. All participants identified themselves as being black. Body mass index (in kg/m2) ranged from 14 to 62. Large differences in mean plasma leptin …

Emergence Of Western Diseases In The Tropical World: The Experience With Chronic Cardiovascular Diseases, Terrence Forrester, Richard S. Cooper, David Weatherall Jan 1998

Emergence Of Western Diseases In The Tropical World: The Experience With Chronic Cardiovascular Diseases, Terrence Forrester, Richard S. Cooper, David Weatherall

Faculty Publications

Our knowledge of the disease burden components of tropical populations is fragmentary. Historically, the infectious diseases have been emphasized but, as some populations have undergone socio-economic changes, vital statistics have described a change in the pattern of disease. The picture is of a decline in infectious and a rise in chronic non-communicable disease. We focus here on the emergence of chronic cardiovascular diseases, and use hypertension as the paradigmic example. Early blood pressure surveys showed a virtual absence of hypertension among rural Africans and moderate prevalences in the Caribbean. Prevalence was highest among US and UK blacks. In a recent …

Faculty Publications

Feeding preferences and consumption were evaluated to measure rate of wood consumption and the response of the gut fauna of Zootermopsis angusticollis to 4 conifers and 2 fungal species. In both choice and forced-feeding tests, exposure to Trichoderma viride Pers.:Fr. reduced consumption of Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] and western hemlock [Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.] but did not affect noble fir (Abies procera Rehd.) or western redcedar (Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don). Exposure to Stereum sanguinolentum Albertini & Schwein.:Fr. increased consumption of Douglas-fir but reduced consumption of western hemlock in a choice feeding test and increased consumption of Douglas-fir …

Accelerated Degradation Tests: Modeling And Analysis, William Q. Meeker, Luis A. Escobar, C. Joseph Lu Jan 1998

Accelerated Degradation Tests: Modeling And Analysis, William Q. Meeker, Luis A. Escobar, C. Joseph Lu

Faculty Publications

High reliability systems generally require individual system components having extremely high reliability over long periods of time. Short product development times require reliability tests to be conducted with severe time constraints. Frequently few or no failures occur during such tests, even with acceleration. Thus, it is difficult to assess reliability with traditional life tests that record only failure times. For some components, degradation measures can be taken over time. A relationship between component failure and amount of degradation makes it possible to use degradation models and data to make inferences and predictions about a failure-time distribution. This article describes degradation …

Systematic Procedures For Operational Code Analysis: Measuring And Modeling Jimmy Carter's Operational Code, Stephen G. Walker, Mark Schafer, Michael D. Young

Faculty Publications

In this article we introduce a new scoring system for doing operational code analysis and test its reliability and validity by measuring and modeling President Jimmy Carter's operational code. Using speeches from the public record we construct indices for the elements of the operational code construct. Based upon the valences and scaled intensities of verbs uttered in the speeches, President Jimmy Carter's views of the political universe and approaches to political action in different issue areas are identified and compared. The results of the analysis provide reasonable support for the face, construct, and content validity of the operational code indices. …

Susceptibility Of Field Populations Of Beet Armyworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) To Commercial And Experimental Insecticides, V. J. Mascarenhas, J. B. Graves, B. R. Leonard, E. Burris Jan 1998

Susceptibility Of Field Populations Of Beet Armyworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) To Commercial And Experimental Insecticides, V. J. Mascarenhas, J. B. Graves, B. R. Leonard, E. Burris

Faculty Publications

Susceptibility of field-collected strains of beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner), to commercial and experimental insecticides was evaluated in a diet overlay bioassay by using 2-d-old larvae. Larvae were collected from cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., fields in Alabama, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, and from Rio Bravo, Mexico. Several field strains exhibited reduced susceptibility to chlorpyrifos and thiodicarb, which are the only 2 labeled insecticides recommended for beet armyworm control in Louisiana. In chlorpyrifos bioassays, 7 of the 11 field strains had significantly higher LC50s than the reference strain from the Southern Insect Management Laboratory at Stoneville, MS. In thiodicarb bioassays, …

Faculty Publications

One Bacillus thuringiensis variety aizawai and several B. thuringiensis variety kurstaki insecticides were evaluated using dosage-mortality bioassays to determine toxicity against a reference soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), strain. Costar and Design WSP (B. thuringiensis variety aizawai) had the lowest LC50s followed by Dipel ES, Condor XL, and Javelin WG. LC50s were highest for MVP II. Mattch, MVP II; and Xentari required significantly more time to cause mortality than the other B. thuringiensis insecticides. Variability of response of soybean looper to B. thuringiensis insecticides will necessitate the development of discriminating concentrations for several B. thuringiensis products. Soybean loopers were collected …

Subterranean Termite (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) Attack On Ground Monitors Around An Apartment Complex In Fixed Pattern Placements Versus Conducive Placements, Gregg Henderson, Kathy Sharpe-Mccollum, Chris Dunaway

Faculty Publications

Four hundred and twenty-eight wooden stakes were placed in the ground around eleven similar buildings using conductive and uniform placements to evaluate placement success relative to termite attack. Stakes were monitored for termite attack at two, six, 11, and 13 months. Overall, monitors placed in conductive locations were twice as likely to be attacked by subterranean termites compared with patterned placements; however, the difference was not statistically significant. Redd Pest Control, Kenner, LA, helped in selecting the 11 buildings. We thank Dr. Brian D. Marx (LSU), Experimental statistics) and Beverly Wiltz (LSU, Dept. Entomology) for technical assistance. Effect Of Naphthalene, Butylated Hydroxytoluene, Dioctyl Phthalate, And Adipic Dioctyl Ester, Chemicals Found In The Nests Of The Formosan Subterranean Termite (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) On A Saprophytic Mucor Sp. (Zygomycetes: Mucorales), Beverly A. Wiltz, Gregg Henderson, Jian Chen Jan 1998

Wiltz, Gregg Henderson, Jian Chen

Faculty Publications

Fungi are commonly found associated with termites and their nests. Four chemicals that have been isolated from the nests of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, were evaluated to determine their effect on a common nest fungus, a saprophytic Mucor sp. Butylated hydroxytoluene, dioctyl phthalate, and adipic dioctyl ester were not found to affect the growth of this fungus. At high concentrations, naphthalene inhibited the growth of this Mucor sp. through its presence in the surrounding air. The possible use of naphthalene by termites to control fungi is discussed.

Genetic Evidence For The Proto-Austronesian Homeland In Asia: Mtdna And Nuclear Dna Variation In Taiwanese Aboriginal Tribes, Terry Melton, Stephanie Clifford, Jeremy Martinson, Mark Batzer, Mark Stoneking

Faculty Publications

Previous studies of mtDNA variation in indigenous Taiwanese populations have suggested that they held an ancestral position in the spread of mtDNAs throughout Southeast Asia and Oceania (Melton et al. 1995; Sykes et al. 1995), but the question of an absolute proto-Austronesian homeland remains. To search for Asian roots for indigenous Taiwanese populations, 28 mtDNAs representative of variation in four tribal groups (Ami, Atayal, Bunun, and Paiwan) were sequenced and were compared with each other and with mtDNAs from 25 other populations from Asia and Oceania. In addition, eight polymorphic Alu insertion loci were analyzed, to determine if the pattern …

Computation On Metric Spaces Via Domain Theory, Jimmie Lawson

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to survey recent approaches to realizing (or embedding) a Polish space as the set of maximal points of a continuous domain. Such realizations provide a convenient framework in which to model certain computational algorithms on the space and a useful alternate approach via the probabilistic power domain to measure theory and integraion on the space. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Heat Conduction In Fine Scale Mixtures With Interfacial Contact Resistance, Robert Lipton Jan 1998

Heat Conduction In Fine Scale Mixtures With Interfacial Contact Resistance, Robert Lipton

Faculty Publications

Heat conduction in a fine scale mixture of two conductors is examined in the presence of a contact resistance between phases. The problem is studied rigorously in the context of periodic homogenization. Unlike the case of perfect heat transmission between phases, the temperature gradients converge weakly as Radon measures. The strict ellipticity of the homogenized transport equation depends upon the geometry of the interface. The effective conductivity associated with the overall heat dissipation rate inside a composite cube is considered. It is shown that this property exhibits a size effect under rescaling.

Design Of Particle Reinforced Heat Conducting Composites With Interfacial Thermal Barriers, Robert Lipton Jan 1998

Design Of Particle Reinforced Heat Conducting Composites With Interfacial Thermal Barriers, Robert Lipton

Faculty Publications

Two phase particle reinforced heat conducting composites are considered. We treat the case when there is an interfacial thermal barrier between phases. We provide novel rules of thumb for selecting the particle size distribution and minimum particle size necessary for constructing composites with effective properties greater than that of the matrix. The rules are based on new energy dissipation inequalities obtained in the work of Lipton (1996. Journal of Applied Physics, 80:5583-5586).

The Second Stekloff Eigenvalue And Energy Dissipation Inequalities For Functionals With Surface Energy, Robert Lipton Jan 1998

The Second Stekloff Eigenvalue And Energy Dissipation Inequalities For Functionals With Surface Energy, Robert Lipton

Faculty Publications

A functional with both bulk and interfacial surface energy is considered. It corresponds to the energy dissipated inside a two-phase electrical conductor in the presence of an electrical contact resistance at the two-phase interface. The effect of embedding a highly conducting particle into a matrix of lesser conductivity is investigated. We find the criterion that determines when the increase in surface energy matches or exceeds the reduction in bulk energy associated with the particle. This criterion is general and applies to any particle with Lipschitz continuous boundary. It is given in terms of the of the second Stekloff eigenvalue of …

Influence Of Interfacial Surface Conduction On The Dc Electrical Conductivity Of Particle Reinforced Composites, Robert Lipton Jan 1998

Influence Of Interfacial Surface Conduction On The Dc Electrical Conductivity Of Particle Reinforced Composites, Robert Lipton

Faculty Publications

We describe new effects associated with electrical conduction along phase interfaces for particle reinforced conductors. For particles of general shape we introduce a new quantity β1 called the 'surface to volume dissipation' of a particle. This quantity is a measure of the particle's ability to dissipate energy on its surface relative to the energy dissipated in its interior. It is described mathematically as the minimum value of a suitably defined Rayleigh quotient and is related to an eigenvalue problem posed on the particle surface. We consider the overall conductivity of a particle reinforced conductor when the particle conductivities are less …

On Weak Maps Of Ternary Matroids, James Oxley, Geoff Whittle

Faculty Publications

Let M and N be ternary matroids having the same rank and the same ground set, and assume that every independent set in N is also independent in M. The main result of this paper proves that if M is 3-connected and N is connected and non-binary, then M = N. A related result characterizes precisely when a matroid that is obtained by relaxing a circuit-hyperplane of a ternary matroid is also ternary. © 1998 Academic Press Limited.

On Summability Of Distributions And Spectral Geometry, R. Estrada, J. M. Gracia-Bondía, J. C. Várilly

Faculty Publications

Modulo the moment asymptotic expansion, the Cesàro and parametric behaviours of distributions at infinity are equivalent. On the strength of this result, we construct the asymptotic analysis for spectral densities arising from elliptic pseudodifferential operators. We show how Cesàro developments lead to efficient calculations of the expansion coefficients of counting number functionals and Green functions. The bosonic action functional proposed by Chamseddine and Connes can more generally be validated as a Cesàro asymptotic development.

Imposition Of Cauchy Data To The Teukolsky Equation. Iii. The Rotating Case, Manuela Campanelli, Carlos O. Lousto, John Baker, Gaurav Khanna, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We solve the problem of expressing the Weyl scalars ψ that describe gravitational perturbations of a Kerr black hole in terms of Cauchy data. To do so we use geometrical identities (such as the Gauss-Codazzi relations) as well as the Einstein equations. We are able to explicitly express ψ and [Formula Presented] as functions only of the extrinsic curvature and the three-metric (and geometrical objects built out of it) of a generic spacelike slice of the spacetime. These results provide the link between initial data and ψ to be evolved by the Teukolsky equation, and can be used to compute …

Evolving The Bowen-York Initial Data For Spinning Black Holes, Reinaldo J. Gleiser, Carlos O. Nicasio, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

The Bowen-York initial value data typically used in numerical relativity to represent a spinning black hole are not those of a constant-time slice of the Kerr spacetime. If Bowen-York initial data are used for each black hole in a collision, the emitted radiation will be partially due to the “relaxation” of the individual holes to Kerr form. We compute this radiation by treating the geometry for a single hole as a perturbation of a Schwarzschild black hole, and by using second order perturbation theory. We discuss the extent to which Bowen-York data can be expected accurately to represent Kerr holes. …

Patterns On Liquid Surfaces: Cnoidal Waves, Compactons And Scaling, A. Ludu, J. P. Draayer Jan 1998

Patterns On Liquid Surfaces: Cnoidal Waves, Compactons And Scaling, A. Ludu, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

Localized patterns and nonlinear oscillation formations on the bounded free surface of an ideal incompressible liquid are investigated. Cnoidal modes, solitons and compactons, as traveling non-axially symmetric shapes are discussed. A finite-difference differential generalized Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation is shown to describe the three-dimensional motion of the fluid surface, and in the limit of long and shallow channels one recovers the well-known KdV equation. A tentative expansion formula for the representation of the general solution of a nonlinear equation, for given initial conditions is introduced. The model is useful in multilayer fluid dynamics, cluster formation, and nuclear physics since, up …

Complementary Group Resolution Of The Su(N) Outer Multiplicity Problem. I. The Littlewood Rules And A Complementary U(2n-2) Group Structure, Feng Pan, J. P. Draayer Jan 1998

Complementary Group Resolution Of The Su(N) Outer Multiplicity Problem. I. The Littlewood Rules And A Complementary U(2n-2) Group Structure, Feng Pan, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

A complementary group to SU(n) is found that realizes all features of the Littlewood rules for Kronecker products of SU(n) representations. This is accomplished by considering a state of SU(n) to be a special Gel'fand state of the complementary group U(2n-2) with labels of the latter used to distinguish multiple occurrences of irreducible representations of SU(n) (irreps) in the SU(n)×SU(n)↓SU(n) decomposition that is obtained from the Littlewood rules. Furthermore, this realization also helps us to determine SU(n)⊃SU(n - 1) × U(1) Reduced Wigner Coefficients (RWCs, frequently called Isoscalar Factors) and Clebsch-Gordan Coefficients [CGCs, or full (nonreduced) Wigner Coefficients] of SU(n), …

Nonlinear Modes Of Liquid Drops As Solitary Waves, A. Ludu, J. P. Draayer Jan 1998

Nonlinear Modes Of Liquid Drops As Solitary Waves, A. Ludu, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

The nonlinear dynamic equations of the surface of a liquid drop are shown to be directly connected to Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) systems, giving traveling solutions that are cnoidal waves. They generate multiscale patterns ranging from small harmonic oscillations (linearized model), to nonlinear oscillations, up through solitary waves. These non-axis-symmetric localized shapes are also described by a KdV Hamiltonian system. Recently such “rotons” were observed experimentally when the shape oscillations of a droplet became nonlinear. The results apply to droplike systems from cluster formation to stellar models, including hyperdeformed nuclei and fission. © 1998 The American Physical Society.

Wavelets And Quantum Algebras, A. Ludu, M. Greiner, J. P. Draayer Jan 1998

Wavelets And Quantum Algebras, A. Ludu, M. Greiner, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

Wavelets, known to be useful in nonlinear multiscale processes and in multiresolution analysis, are shown to have a q-deformed algebraic structure. The translation and dilation operators associate to any scaling equation a nonlinear, two parameter algebra. This structure can be mapped onto the quantum group slq(2) in one limit, and approaches a Fourier series generating algebra, in another limit. A duality between any scaling function and its corresponding nonlinear algebra is obtained. Examples for the Haar and B-wavelets are worked out in detail. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
