Some Harmonic N-Slit Mappings, Michael Dorff Feb 1998

Some Harmonic N-Slit Mappings, Michael Dorff

Faculty Publications

The class SH consists of univalent, harmonic, and sense-preserving functions f in the unit disk, ∆, such that f = h+g where h(z) = (see PDF), g(z) = (see PDF) . SOH will denote the subclass with b1 = 0. We present a collection of n-slit mappings (n ≥ 2) and prove that the 2-slit mappings are in SH while for n ≥ 3 the mappings are in SOH. Finally we show that these mappings establish the sharpness of a previous theorem by Clunie and Sheil-Small while disproving a conjecture about the inner mapping radius.

Thermal Equilibrium Of Warm Clouds Of Charge With Small Aspect Ratio, Deborah L. Paulson, Ross L. Spencer

Faculty Publications

Global thermal equilibrium computations are presented for non-neutral plasmas whose radial size is much larger than their axial thickness. Axial and radial density profiles are computed for both ideal and nonideal Penning trap fields. Simple results are obtained in the limits of both low and high central density. Comparison is made to the grid calculations of Mason et al. [Phys. Plasmas 3 (5), 1502 (1996)].

Panelling Planar Graphs, James Oxley, Don Row Jan 1998

Panelling Planar Graphs, James Oxley, Don Row

Faculty Publications

The skeleton of a spherical polyhedron may also be viewed as the skeleton of other panelled structures. We characterize those collections of cycles of a planar graph that bound the panels of hinged-panel structures, and distinguish those that arise from spherical polyhedra.

Radicals, Metals And Magnetism, David J R Brook Jan 1998

Radicals, Metals And Magnetism, David J R Brook

Faculty Publications

The interaction between unpaired electrons governs many physical properties of materials. Although in a fundamental sense the interaction is simple, a full understanding of the interaction in molecular systems is complicated by the presence of other bonding and non-bonding electrons. The resulting many body problem is very challenging. Nevertheless, much qualitative understanding can be obtained from applying simple molecular orbital theory and considering only the partly filled orbitals. The resulting model can be used to describe existing diradical and metal-radical systems and also has predicative value in the search for molecular magnets and design of nanoscale devices.

Twisting Of X-Ray Isophotes In Triaxial Galaxies, Aaron J. Romanowsky, C. S. Kochanek Jan 1998

Twisting Of X-Ray Isophotes In Triaxial Galaxies, Aaron J. Romanowsky, C. S. Kochanek

Faculty Publications

We investigate X-ray isophote twists created by triaxiality differences between the luminous stellar distributions and the dark halos in elliptical galaxies. For a typically oblate luminous galaxy embedded in a more prolate halo formed by dissipationless collapse, the triaxiality difference of ΔT simeq 0.7 leads to typical isophote twists of langΔψXrang simeq 16° ± 19° at 3 effective stellar radii. In a model that includes baryonic dissipation, the effect is smaller, with ΔT simeq 0.3 and langΔψXrang simeq 5° ± 8°. Thus, accurate measurements of X-ray isophote twists may be able to set constraints on the interactions between baryons and …

Comment, The Green Aspects Of Printz: The Revival Of Federalism And Its Implications For Environmental Law, Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

This Comment reviews the Printz decision in the context of the Supreme Court's recent federalism jurisprudence and assesses its implications for environmental law. Part I provides a brief historical overview of the federal-state relationship in the environmental context and recent Supreme Court decisions on federalism. Part II discusses and evaluates the Printz decision. Part III applies the Supreme Court holdings in Printz and related federalism cases to current environmental policies and identifies federal environmental programs that are constitutionally suspect. Finally, Part IV addresses the public policy concern that limiting the federal government's power in the environmental context will inevitably weaken …

Inter-And Intraspecific Interaction Rates Of Three Species Of Lemurs (Subfamily Lemurinae) In An Enclosure At The Memphis Zoo And Aquarium, Stephen J. Mullin Jan 1998

Inter-And Intraspecific Interaction Rates Of Three Species Of Lemurs (Subfamily Lemurinae) In An Enclosure At The Memphis Zoo And Aquarium, Stephen J. Mullin

Faculty Publications

The use of mixed-species exhibits in zoological parks may influence the types and rates of interactions between individuals housed in such enclosures. Inter-and intraspecific behavioral interactions were observed for three species of lemurs (ring-tailed lemur, Lemur catta; black lemur, Eulemur macaco macaco; and black-and-white ruffed leumur, Varecia variegata variegata; in an enclosure designed to simulate characteristics of their natural habitat. Intraspecific interactions occurred more frequently than interspecific interactions, and little aggression was observed, either between or within species. Intraspecific interactions among black lemurs increased with decreasing ambient temperature. Black lemurs performed more intraspecific mutual contacts than either agonistic behaviors or …

The Foraging Ecology Of The Gray Rat Snake (Elaphe Obsoleta Spiloides)-Visual Stimuli Facilitate Location Of Arboreal Prey, Robert J. Cooper, Stephen J. Mullin

Faculty Publications

We examined the responsiveness of adult gray rat snakes to avian prey in enclosures that simulated natural habitat conditions. Subjects searched for arboreal nest contents in the presence or absence of a bird model flown so as to simulate avian provisioning behavior. In the absence of the model, gray rat snake latency to capture prey was over 92 % greater than when searching for nest contents with the model. Snakes responded to model flight by turning their heads in the direction of its movement. We conclude that gray rat snakes perceive relatively distant visual cues from prey, and that nest …

Effects Of Curing Temperature On The Leachability Of Lead Undergoing Solidification/Stabilization With Cement, Michael A. Janusa Jan 1998

Effects Of Curing Temperature On The Leachability Of Lead Undergoing Solidification/Stabilization With Cement, Michael A. Janusa

Faculty Publications

Curing temperature was found to dramatically affect the amount of waste leached from a solidified waste/cement matrix between 2 and 40°C. Using lead nitrate as a model waste, samples cured for 7,14, and 28 days at a cure temperature of 40°C leached very little lead (1-3 mg/liter), while at a cure temperature of 2°C samples leached approximately 25 times more lead (20-90 mg/liter). The results indicate that curing temperature is a very crucial variable to consider when solidifying waste with cement if maximum stabilization is to be achieved.

Effects Of Particle Size And Contact Time On The Reliability Of Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure For Solidified/Stabilized Waste, Michael A. Janusa Jan 1998

Effects Of Particle Size And Contact Time On The Reliability Of Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure For Solidified/Stabilized Waste, Michael A. Janusa

Faculty Publications

Inconsistency in leaching results using the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP)indicates that the procedure should contain specific guidance with respect to the following parameters: ( 1 ) minimum particle size, (2) contact time limit between leachant and waste. Experimental datas how that there is approximately a 50% decrease in the amount of waste leached when a minimum particle size of 8 mm is applied. Results indicate that as the contact time between leachant and waste increases, the amount of waste leached increases drastically. The results suggest that restrictions should be set on these two parameters for TCLP results to be …

Palladium-Catalyzed Carboxylation Of Allyl Stannanes And Carboxylative Coupling Of Allyl Stannanes And Allyl Halides [Abstract], Russell J. Franks Jan 1998

Palladium-Catalyzed Carboxylation Of Allyl Stannanes And Carboxylative Coupling Of Allyl Stannanes And Allyl Halides [Abstract], Russell J. Franks

Faculty Publications

The reaction of allyl stannanes with CO2 to form stannyl carboxylates (esters) is catalyzed by Pd(PR3)4 complexes. Thus, R3SnCH2CH=CH2 [R=Me and Ph]are converted to R3SnO2 CCH2CH=CH2 and R3SnO2CCH=CHCH3 under 33 atm of CO2 (70°C, THF) in moderate to excellent yield in the presence of 8 mol% Pd(PPh3)4 ; polycarboxylation of diallyldibutyltin and tetraallyltin also is effected, producing the respective di- and tetracarboxylates, Bu2Sn(O2CCH2CH=CH2)2 and Sn(O2CCH …

The Alien-Citizen Paradox And Other Consequences Of U.S. Colonialism, Ediberto Román Jan 1998

The Alien-Citizen Paradox And Other Consequences Of U.S. Colonialism, Ediberto Román

Faculty Publications

This Article examines the United States' 100-year-old failed promise. In addition to detailing the unequal citizenship status of the people of Puerto Rico, this Article examines the role that racial and ethnic-based prejudice has played in this issue. 34 Essentially, this Article seeks to compare the traditional legal and political rhetoric of American inclusiveness and the virtues of U.S. citizenship to the reality of colonialism and the impact white supremacy has had on U.S. colonial history. By addressing the subordinated status of "aliencitizens," this Article illustrates the incompatibility of equality under colonialism. As Congress addresses the question of Puerto Rico's …

Constitutional Fidelity And The Commerce Clause: A Reply To Professor Ackerman, Elizabeth Price Foley, Elizabeth C. Price Jan 1998

Constitutional Fidelity And The Commerce Clause: A Reply To Professor Ackerman, Elizabeth Price Foley, Elizabeth C. Price

Faculty Publications

Can the Constitution be legitimately, albeit implicitly, amended by the Supreme Court? The possibility of implicit constitutional amendment - most forcefully advocated by Professor Bruce Ackerman as "transformative" Supreme Court decisions - has been articulated to justify, legitimate, and entrench various radical reinterpretations of the Constitution, most notably the New Deal Court's vast expansion of the power to regulate commerce. The article concludes that such implicit constitutional amendments are theoretically illegitimate and provide strong disincentives for "We the People" to become politically active in order to "correct" flaws in the original Constitution or interpretations thereof that are deemed no longer …

On Block-Coded Modulation Using Unequal Error Protection Codes Over Rayleigh-Fading Channels, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Tadao Kasami, Shu Lin, Hideki Imai Jan 1998

On Block-Coded Modulation Using Unequal Error Protection Codes Over Rayleigh-Fading Channels, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Tadao Kasami, Shu Lin, Hideki Imai

Faculty Publications

This paper considers block-coded 8-phase-shift-keying (PSK) modulations for the unequal error protection (UEP) of information transmitted over Rayleigh-fading channels. Both conventional linear block codes and linear UEP (LUEP) codes are combined with a naturally labeled 8-PSK signal set, using the multilevel construction of Imai and Hirakawa (1977). Computer simulation results are presented showing that, over Rayleigh-fading channels, it is possible to improve the coding gain for the most significant bits with the use of binary LUEP codes as constituent codes, in comparison with using conventional binary linear codes alone.

Higher Prices And Shorter Rotations: Good News For Pine Plantation Investors, But . . ., Steven H. Bullard, Bob Daniels

Faculty Publications

Southern pine markets have changed dramatically in recent years. Our focus here is the changing forest economy, new price expectations, and new technologies for growing and utilizing pines. The major changes in southern pine markets are good news for forest landowners concerned with timber production-higher prices are increasing pine plantation returns, rotation lengths are decreasing, and the value of land in pine production is increasing.

Influence Of Planting Density On Diameter And Height In East Texas Pine Plantations, Young Jin Lee, J. David Lenhart Jan 1998

Influence Of Planting Density On Diameter And Height In East Texas Pine Plantations, Young Jin Lee, J. David Lenhart

Faculty Publications

The response of diameter and height of unthinned planted stands ofloblolly (Pinus taeda L.) and slash (Pinus elliottii Eng elm.)pine in East Texas to different classes of planting densities were analyzed. After tracking the development ofdiameterand heightfor 15yron a setofpennanentplots representing a broad range of plantation parameters, average diameter and average height trends were observed. For both species, average diameter values were significantly larger with lower planting densities. 1n contrast, average height growth is insensitive to planting density at younger age classes for loblolly and at older age classes for slash pine plantations.
