Electrophoretic Deposition Of Polymer Chains On An Adsorbing Surface In (2+1) Dimensions: Conformational Anisotropy And Nonuniversal Coverage, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey
Faculty Publications
Electrophoretic deposition of polymer chains flowing in a (2 + 1)-dimensional system is studied by computer simulations. Steady-state surface coverage θj is found to decay with the chain's length, i.e., θj∼Lc-a with a nonuniversal exponent α≃0.0-0.9 depending on the magnitude of driving field and temperature. Conformational crossover occurs for chains from a surface or wall to an adjacent bulk region with different scaling exponents for their longitudinal and transverse spread.

A Particle-Number-Conserving Solution To The Generalized Pairing Problem, Feng Pan, J. P. Draayer, W. E. Ormand
Faculty Publications
An exact, number-conserving solution to the generalized, orbit-dependent pairing problem is derived by introducing an infinite-dimensional algebra. A method for obtaining eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the corresponding Hamiltonian is also given. The relevance of the orbit-dependent pairing solution is demonstrated by comparing predictions of the model with shell-model calculations. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

A global event shape analysis of the multihadronic final states observed in neutral current deep inelastic scattering events with a large rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction is presented. The analysis is performed in the range 5 ≤ Q2 ≤ 185 GeV2 and 160 ≤ W ≤ 250 GeV, where Q2 is the virtuality of the photon and W is the virtual-photon proton centre of mass energy. Particular emphasis is placed on the dependence of the shape variables, measured in the γ * -pomeron rest frame, on the mass of the hadronic final state, MX. With increasing MX …

A 29.5 kDa intracellular α-type carbonic anhydrase, designated Cah3, from the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is the first of this type discovered inside a photosynthetic eukaryote cell. We describe the cloning of a cDNA which encodes the protein. Immunoblot studies with specific antibodies raised against Cah3 demonstrate that the polypeptide is associated exclusively with the thylakoid membrane. The putative transit peptide suggests that Cah3 is directed to the thylakoid lumen, which is confirmed further by the presence of mature sized Cah3 after thermolysin treatment of intact thylakoids. Complementation of the high inorganic carbon concentration-requiring mutant, cia3, with a subcloned …

Differential Expression Of The Arabidopsis Nia1 And Nia2 Genes: Cytokinin-Induced Nitrate Reductase Activity Is Correlated With Increased Nia1 Transcription And Mrna Levels, Xiaodan Yu, Sujatha Sukumaran, László Márton

Nitrate reductase (NR) activity increased up to 14-fold in response to treatment of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings with the cytokinin benzyladenine. NR induction was observed in seedlings germinated directly on cytokinin-containing medium, seedlings transferred to cytokinin medium, and seedlings grown in soil in which cytokinin was applied directly to the leaves. About the same level of induction was seen in both wild-type and Nia2-deletion mutants, indicating that increased NR activity is related to the expression of the minor NR gene, Nia1. The steady-state Nia1 mRNA level was increased severalfold in both wild-type and mutant seedlings after benzyladenine treatment. Transcript …
Spatial Resolution Enhancement Of Ssm/I Data, David G. Long, Douglas L. Daum
Spatial Resolution Enhancement Of Ssm/I Data, David G. Long, Douglas L. Daum
Faculty Publications
One of the limitations in using Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) data for land and vegetation studies is the relatively low-spatial resolution. To ameliorate this limitation, resolution-enhancement algorithms can be applied to the data. In this paper, the Backus-Gilbert inversion (BGI) technique and the scatterometer image-reconstruction (SIR) algorithm are investigated as possible methods for creating enhanced resolution images from SSM/I data. The two algorithms are compared via both the simulation and the actual SSM/I data. The algorithms offer similar resolution enhancement, though SIR requires significantly less computation. Sample results over two land regions of South America are presented.

Determination Of The Asymmetry Parameter And Scattering Coefficient Of Turbid Media From Spatially Resolved Reflectance Measurments, Matthew R. Jones, Yukio Yamada
Faculty Publications
We present a technique for determining the asymmetry parameter and scattering coefficient of turbid media from spatially resolved reflectance measurements. This technique will contribute to the development of medical applications in which it is necessary to predict the distribution and propagation of light in tissue. Based on Monte Carlo simulations, we derived correlations which relate the reduced scattering coefficient and the asymmetry parameter to the relative reflectance curve. Initial estimates of the optical properties are obtained from these correlations. Final values are obtained by adjusting the optical parameters and repeating the Monte Carlo simulations until the simulated reflectance pattern matches …

Deep seismic reflection data from the 1995 Urals Seismic Experiment and Integrated Studies (URSEIS) transect of the Southern Urals document a distinct ∼5 km vertical offset of the Moho beneath the Uralian foreland, here named the Makarovo fault zone. This offset does not disrupt the overlying Riphean sedimentary section, nor does it correlate with any major surface lineaments or known Phanerozoic subduction features. It is thus interpreted to be an Archean or Early Proterozoic fault zone (possibly a terrane boundary) that disrupts an even older Moho. Most important is the implication that this structure and the Moho it offsets were …

The complete assignment of the proton chemical shifts obtained by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of de-O-acetylated glucuronoxylomannans (GXMs) from Cryptococcus neoformanspermitted the high-resolution determination of the total structure of any GXM. Six structural motifs based on an α-(1→3)-mannotriose substituted with variable quantities of 2-O-β- and 4-O-β-xylopyranosyl and 2-O-β-glucopyranosyluronic acid were identified. The chemical shifts of only the anomeric protons of the mannosyl residues served as structure reporter groups (SRG) for the identification and quantitation of the six triads present in any GXM. The assigned protons for the mannosyl residues resonated at clearly …

The usefulness of the concept of JEBAR, the joint effect of baroclinicity and relief, in large-scale ocean dynamics is critically analyzed. The authors address two questions. Does the JEBAR term properly characterize the joint impact of stratification and bottom topography on the ocean circulation? Do estimates of the JEBAR term from observational data allow reliable diagnostic calculations? The authors give a negative answer to the first question. The JEBAR term need not give a true measure of the effect of bottom relief in a stratified ocean. A simple two-layer model provides examples. As to the second question, it is demonstrated …
Single-Head Spin Modes In Frontal Polymerization, Victor M. Ilyashenko, John A. Pojman
Single-Head Spin Modes In Frontal Polymerization, Victor M. Ilyashenko, John A. Pojman
Faculty Publications
The single-head spin mode is the first two-dimensional pattern of self-propagating thermal reaction fronts observed after the planar front loses stability. A "hot spot" is observed to propagate around the periphery of the front. The dynamics of the single-head frontal polymerization regime were studied experimentally, and two novel results were found. The "hot spot" was measured and found to be superadiabatic. The relationship between the rotational velocity and the propagating velocity was found. Experimental data were also compared with the theoretical results based on the linear stability analysis and found to be in a reasonable agreement. (C) 1998 American institute …
Biodegradation Of Congo Red By Phanerochaete Chrysosporium, Matthew Tatarko, John A. Bumpus
Biodegradation Of Congo Red By Phanerochaete Chrysosporium, Matthew Tatarko, John A. Bumpus
Faculty Publications
The azo dye Congo Red, was degraded extensively by the wood rotting basidiomycete, Phanerochaete chrysosporium in agitated liquid cultures and in solid malt agar cultures. Upon addition of Congo Red to agitated liquid cultures, the dye was adsorbed to the mycelial pellets in both ligninolytic and non-ligninolytic cultures followed by extensive degradation only in the ligninolytic cultures. This fungus, grown from conidiospores, readily degraded up to 718 μM (500 mg/l) Congo Red in 2.0% malt agar. Decolorization of Congo Red in malt agar plates was suppressed by the addition of supplemental nutrient nitrogen indicating that the lignin degrading system of …

Any plaintiff seeking to recover in tort must prove that the defendant has breached the duty of care. Even after the plaintiff has established the defendant's breach of duty, however, issues of causation and damages remain. These two issues are frequently vexing, both conceptually and in terms of evidentiary demonstration. For example, if a plaintiff proves that a defendant acted negligently, it still may be unclear whether the plaintiff would have been injured even ip the absence of the defendant's negligence. Similarly, in assessing damages, factfinders often :find it difficult to attach a monetary value to a plaintiff's nonpecuniary losses …

INSIGHTS about professional communication may come from odd and unexpected places. McCloud's Understanding Comics (hereafter UC) is a case in point. Despite the juvenile connotations evoked by any discussion of comic books, the theory of visual communication presented in UC arguably rivals the best of contemporary semiotics (that is, the study of how we make meaning out of gestures, words, paragraphs, pictures, and so on).

We present a new method for representation and (lossy) compression of bitonal document images. The technique extracts a skeletal medial axis from each object using a true Euclidean distance map of the image and then finds piecewise linear breakpoints in the skeleton to create a breakpoint skeletal representation, bps, (Fig. 1). The bps is encoded for each object as a set of triples {, <Δx2,Δy2,Δr2>, . . . <Δxn,Δyn,Δrn>} where contains the coordinate and distance (radius, r1) of the initial breakpoint from the closest point on the perimeter of the object and <Δxi,Δyi,Δri> represents the difference in location and radius between …δxi,δyi,δri>δxn,δyn,δrn>δx2,δy2,δr2>

Patterns of gene differences among humans contain information about the demographic history of our species. Haploid loci like mitochondrial DNA and the nonrecombining part of the Y chromosome show a pattern indicating expansion from a population of only several thousand during the late middle or early upper Pleistocene. Nuclear short tandem repeat loci also show evidence of this expansion. Both mitochondrial DNA and the Y chromosome coalesce within the last several hundred thousand years, and they cannot provide information about the population before their coalescence. Several nuclear loci are informative about our ancestral population size during nearly the whole Pleistocene. …

The relationship between spin state and metal-ligand bonding interactions in CpM(NO)-X2 species was investigated using density functional computational techniques. The geometries of CpM(NO)Cl2 (M = Cr, Mo), CpCr(NO)(NH2)X, and CpCr(NO)(CH3)X (X = Cl, CH3) were optimized at the DFT-B3LYP level for both the diamagnetic (S = 0) and paramagnetic (S = 1) electronic configurations. While the geometric parameters of the singlet compounds matched well with structures determined experimentally, the Cr-NO bond lengths in the triplet species exceeded the experimentally observed range by a significant margin, thereby indicating a propensity for nitrosyl-ligand dissociation from the high-spin complexes. The order of relative …

Deconvolving The Information From An Imperfect Spherical Gravitational-Wave Antenna, S. M. Merkowitz, W. W. Johnson
Faculty Publications
We have studied the effects of imperfections in spherical gravitational-wave antenna on our ability to properly interpret the data it will produce. The results of a numerical simulation are reported that quantitatively describe the systematic errors resulting from imperfections in various components of the antenna. In addition, the results of measurements on a room-temperature prototype are presented that verify it is possible to accurately deconvolve the data in practice.

Extensions Of The Poisson Summation Formula, A. L. Durán, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Faculty Publications
The classical Poisson summation formula (1.1) and the corresponding distributional formula (1.2) have found extensive applications in various scientific fields. However, they are not universally valid. For instance, if φ(x) is a smooth function, the left-hand side of (1.1) is generally divergent. Even when both sides of (1.1) converge absolutely, they may do so to different numbers. Indeed, in Example 3 we are faced with the embarrassing situation where the series on the left-hand side of (1.1) converges for Res1 while that on the right-hand side converges only for Res<0. Our aim is to extend formulas (1.1) and (1.2) with the help of some new results in distributional theory. For instance, the evaluation of the distribution with zero mean as given by (3.1) at a test function φ(x) yields the relation ∑∞-∞φ(k)-∫∞-∞φ(x)dx. Both the series and the integral in this expression are generally divergent. The concept of the Cesàro limit is then used to obtain the finite difference of these two terms. Thereafter we extend the analysis to higher dimensions. Various innovative examples are presented to illustrate these concepts. © 1998 Academic Press.

The NOMAD experiment is a short base-line search for νμ − ντ oscillations in the CERN neutrino beam. The ντ's are searched for through their charged current interactions followed by the observation of the resulting τ− through its electronic, muonic or hadronic decays. These decays are recognized using kinematical criteria necessitating the use of a light target which enables the reconstruction of individual particles produced in the neutrino interactions. This paper describes the various components of the NOMAD detector: the target and muon drift chambers, the electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters, the preshower and transition radiation …

Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on model fluids representing eicosane isomers in order to investigate the effect of branching and side chain position on fluid rheology. A heterogeneous, united-atom model with 20 Lennard-Jones interaction sites located at carbon centers was used to model the fluids. Vibrations and bond rotations were frozen, but torsional rotation was included. It was found that viscosity increases significantly from the n-alkane structure to a branch on carbon 2, but the movement of the branch along the carbon backbone has a smaller increasing than decreasing effect. The size of the group in a branched …

We characterize those discrete groups Gwhich can act properly discontinuously, isometrically, and cocompactly on hyperbolic 3-space H^3 in terms of the combinatorics of the action of G on its space at infinity. The major ingredients in the proof are the properties of groups that are negatively curved (in the large) (that is, Gromov hyperbolic), the combinatorial Riemann mapping theorem, and the Sullivan-Tukia theorem on groups which act uniformly quasiconformally on the 2-sphere.
