Health, Health Insurance And The Labor Market, Janet Currie, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 1999

Health, Health Insurance And The Labor Market, Janet Currie, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

This chapter provides an overview of the literature linking health, health insurance and labor market outcomes such as wages, earnings, employment, hours, occupational choice, job turnover, retirement, and the structure of employment. The ®rst part of the paper focuses on the relationship between health and labor market outcomes. The empirical literature surveyed suggests that poor health reduces the capacity to work and has substantive effects on wages, labor force participation and job choice. The exact magnitudes, however, are sensitive to both the choice of health measures and to identi®cation assumptions. The second part of the paper considers the link between …

Nebraska’S Lodging Tax, Brian J. Hill Jan 1999

Nebraska’S Lodging Tax, Brian J. Hill

Faculty Publications

Like many states, Nebraska charges a tax on overnight lodging accommodations. Sometimes called a bed tax or occupancy tax, this levy is available on a county by county basis as desired by county commissioners or supervisors. As of 1996, 45 Nebraska counties opted to impose a lodging tax on their guests. That same year, total government revenues from the lodging tax were over $6 million. The funds gathered in this manner provide the funding for the Nebraska Division of Travel and Tourism and for county marketing efforts.

Who Should Be Entitled To Claim The New Education Credits?, Glenn E. Coven Jan 1999

Who Should Be Entitled To Claim The New Education Credits?, Glenn E. Coven

Faculty Publications

Professor Coven believes that the education assistance provisions enacted in 1997, while long overdue, were ill-considered and poorly constructed. Focusing on what should have been the simple question of who is entitled to claim an education tax credit, this report illustrates the harm that inadequate drafting produces. While section 25A appeared to deny a credit to a dependent child, an unfair and unwise result, the proposed regulations allow parents to shift the credit to their children but only on the forfeiture of the deduction for the personal exemption. That rule, says Coven, imposes a harsh penalty on low and middle-income …

Spoiling The Surprise: Constraints Facing Random Regulatory Inspections In Japan And The United States, Andrew Chin Jan 1999

Spoiling The Surprise: Constraints Facing Random Regulatory Inspections In Japan And The United States, Andrew Chin

Faculty Publications

This Article is organized as follows. Part I presents a rational actor model of legal compliance under an enforcement regime based on random inspections and identifies two classes of reforms that can be applied in combination to improve aggregate compliance. Part II introduces the problem of corrupt tip-offs into the model and argues that exogenous reforms are necessary to combat corruption. Part III surveys the use of random administrative inspections in the United States, reviews the approaches taken by four such programs to improve compliance and fight corruption, and describes the various constraints under which they must operate. Part IV …

Revisiting The Stock Price Impact Of Quality Awards, Gregory L. Adams, Grant Mcqueen, Kristie Seawright Jan 1999

Revisiting The Stock Price Impact Of Quality Awards, Gregory L. Adams, Grant Mcqueen, Kristie Seawright

Faculty Publications

In an event study, Hendricks and Singhal [Hendricks KB, Singhal VR. Quality awards and the market value of the firm: an empirical investigation. Management Sci 1996;42:415±36.] find evidence that firms that win quality awards are further rewarded with a stock price increase on the day of the award announcement. We revisit Hendricks and Singhal (1996), extend their research and find four reasons why management, owners and analysts should be cautious about expecting an abnormal return when a firm wins a quality award. First, in our sample of Baldrige Award winners, the evidence of a stock price response on the announcement …

The Delisting Bias In Crsp’S Nasdaq Data And Its Implications For The Size Effect, Tyler Shumway, Vincent A. Warther Jan 1999

The Delisting Bias In Crsp’S Nasdaq Data And Its Implications For The Size Effect, Tyler Shumway, Vincent A. Warther

Faculty Publications

We investigate the bias in CRSP's Nasdaq data due to missing returns for delisted stocks. We find that the missing returns are large and negative on average, and that delisted stocks experience a substantial decrease in liquidity. We estimate that using a corrected return of −55 percent for missing performance-related delisting returns corrects the bias. We revisit previous work which finds a size effect among Nasdaq stocks. After correcting for the delisting bias, there is no evidence that there ever was a size effect on Nasdaq. Our results are inconsistent with most risk-based explanations of the size effect.

Curricular Approaches To Developing Positive Interethnic Relations, Rosemary C. Henze Jan 1999

Curricular Approaches To Developing Positive Interethnic Relations, Rosemary C. Henze

Faculty Publications

This article examines whether and in what ways curricular approaches can be helpful in building positive interethnic relations in a large, ethnically diverse high school. Through this case study of curricular reform, the author documents four curricular approaches teacher leaders used to explicitly address issues of race and ethnicity and explores the impact of these approaches on student learning. By tracing the process of curricular change, the case illuminates how teacher leaders and administrators created the conditions for these curricular reforms to be sustainable.

Graphic Novels And The Reluctant Reader, Gail De Vos Jan 1999

Graphic Novels And The Reluctant Reader, Gail De Vos

Faculty Publications

What has happened to influence this change? First, the quality of comic books, particularly graphic novels, is now formally acknowledged. Graphic novels, the sturdy, lengthy comic books that contain one story or a set of related stories, are now being sporadically reviewed in selection journals as well as being the focus of a large number of recent articles. But the most compelling reason is wider awareness of our highly visual culture and its impact on our youth. Far from receiving stories from television and film passively, readers of comic books are actively constructing meaning from the text and illustrations and …
