Development Of Carbon-Metal Oxide Supercapacitors From Sol-Gel Derived Carbon-Ruthenium Xerogels, Chuan Lin, James A. Ritter, Branko N. Popov
Faculty Publications
Sol-gel derived high surface area carbon-ruthenium xerogels were prepared from carbonized resorcinol-formaldehyde resins containing an electrochemically active form of ruthenium oxide. The electrochemical capacitance of these materials increased with an increase in the ruthenium content indicating the presence of pseudocapacitance associated with the ruthenium oxide undergoing reversible faradaic redox reactions. A specific capacitance of 256 F/g (single electrode) was obtained from a carbon xerogel containing 14 wt % Ru, which corresponded to more than 50% utilization of the ruthenium. The double layer accounted for 40% of this capacitance. This material was also electrochemically stable, showing no change in a cyclic …

A Mathematical Model For Electroless Copper Deposition On Planar Substrates, M. Ramasubramanian, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White, K. S. Chen
Faculty Publications
A mathematical model for the electroless deposition of copper on a planar electrode is presented and used to make time-dependent predictions on the various quantities in the system. The model takes into account mass transport by diffusion and migration, Butler-Volmer kinetics at the electrode surface, and mixed potential theory. A finite difference approach is used to solve the equations, and the resultant model is used to predict the concentration profiles, potential response, and plating rate as a function of time and concentration of various reactive components.

Objective: To develop and test a quantitative, interviewer-administered food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to ascertain nutrient intakes of individuals in northern India. Design: A 92-item FFQ was developed based on food use and market surveys of the study area. A validation study was conducted consisting of 24-h diet recalls (24HR) administered on 6 randomly selected days over 1 year. Two FFQs were administered, one each at the beginning and end of the 1-year period. FFQ and 24HR-derived nutrient scores were compared using correlation and regression analyses and by computing differences between nutrient intakes estimated by the two methods. Setting: Rural villages …

Analytic solutions to the mathematical model of an electrochemical capacitor (EC) are used to study cell performance under two types of operating conditions: (i) constant current and (ii) electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The analytic solution under constant-current operation is used to investigate the relative importance of ionic resistance in the separator, and ionic and electronic resistances in the porous electrode in the design and operation of an EC. Model results are presented that show the trade-off between energy and power density, as the physical properties of the cell components are varied (e.g., electrode thickness). The analytic solution …

Charged particle production in neutral current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) has been studied using the ZEUS detector. The evolution of the mean multiplicities, scaled momenta and transverse momenta in Q2 and cursive Greek chi for 10 < Q2 < 5120 GeV2 and cursive Greek chi > 6 × 10-4 has been investigated in the current and target fragmentation regions of the Breit frame. Distributions in the target region, using HERA data for the first time, are compared to distributions in the current region. Predictions based on MLLA and LPHD are inconsistent with the data.

Additional Thoughts On Romanian Clinical Legal Education: A Comment On Uphoff's "Confessions Of A Clinician Educator", Kandis Scott

In his essay "Why In-House Live Client Clinics Won't Work in Romania: Confessions of a Clinician Educator,"' Professor Rodney Uphoff relates that he went to Romania with the notion of "practicing and modeling what we preach' in the United States, but he discovered that this model does not fit the Romanian system and available resources. Professor Uphoff's critique of the feasibility of superimposing American solutions onto Romanian problems evidences a fundamental respect for other cultures and their right to selfdetermination. His essay reminds us to look afresh at clinical curriculum and methods in the United States as well as abroad. …

This chapter chronicles a creative response to social retrenchment, a saga of strategic deployment of accessible resources and a reshaping of regional economic forces for the benefit of targeted labor markets. While charting its own course, CHCB is part of a mutually supportive network of health care employers and trainers, including successful home care companies in Philadelphia and the South Bronx. Together, these three corporations form the core of the Cooperative Health Care Network and employ over 500 home health aides. About 80 percent of the employees were formerly dependent on public assistance. The network [network] experience and their applicability …
A Rejoinder To Kenworthy-U'Ren Enlarging The Tent Of Service-Learning, Paul C. Godfrey
A Rejoinder To Kenworthy-U'Ren Enlarging The Tent Of Service-Learning, Paul C. Godfrey
Faculty Publications
The Old Testament prophet/poet Isaiah speaks of the eventual redemption of the children of Abraham and uses a powerful metaphor to invite his followers to action: "Enlarge thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thy habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes" (Isaiah 54:2, King James Version). In the spirit of enlarging the tent and strengthening the stakes of the service-learning movement, Kenworthy-U'Ren's (1999, this issue) commentary to my article, "Service-Learning and Management Education: A Call to Action" (1999, this issue), proves a valuable and wonderful contribution. The strength of her commentary comes from …

Six snow-pit records recovered from Siple Dome, West Antarctica, during 1994 are used to study seasonal variations in chemical (major ion and H202), isotopic (deuterium) and physical stratigraphic properties during the 1988-94 period. Comparison of δD measurements and satellite-derived brightness temperature for the Siple Dome area suggests that most seasonal SD maxima occur within ±4 weeks of each 1 January. Several other chemical species (H2O2, non-sea-salt (nss) SO4 2-, methanesulfonic acid and NO3-) show coeval peaks with SD, together providing an accurate method for identifying summer accumulation. Sea-salt-derived species generally peak during winter/spring, but episodic input is noted throughout some …

Importance Of Convection And Damping On Rates Of Convergence For The Lax-Wendroff Method, Joseph Kolibal
Importance Of Convection And Damping On Rates Of Convergence For The Lax-Wendroff Method, Joseph Kolibal
Faculty Publications
It is well known that in solving steady state problems using hyperbolic time-stepping methods the intent is to drive the transients to zero as quickly as possible. In this paper the convergence to steady state of the Lax-Wendroff method applied to solving the equations of gas dynamics is analyzed for the Laval nozzle problem by comparing the relative rates of damping and convection using a linearized eigenmode analysis. This analysis is developed for the simpler isenthalpic system and then extended to the full Euler equations. Finally, this allows a comparison between these systems. For both models, useful analytical information can …

How Much Justice Hangs In The Balance? A New Look At Hung Jury Rates, Paula Hannaford-Agor, Valerie P. Hans, G. Thomas Munsterman
Faculty Publications
This article discusses what is currently known about hung juries based on existing empirical research and examines some preliminary data about the contemporary incidence of hung juries in the federal courts and several state courts. The paucity of information on hung jury rates highlights the need for a rigorous and system-wide examination that extends beyond the scope of the jury itself and encompasses the institutional characteristics of each jurisdiction and how those characteristics affect the types of cases that are presented to juries.

Creating The 'Portable' Guardianship: Legal And Practical Implications Of Probate Court Cooperation In Interstate Guardianship Cases, Charlene D. Daniel, Paula Hannaford-Agor
Faculty Publications
In this article, we discuss the legal and practical issues associated with interstate guardianships--that is, those guardianships in which the ward has ties to more than one state. Part I addresses these issues in the context of jurisdictional questions, securing necessary information, judicial monitoring and enforcement of guardianship orders, and property management. Part II proposes some modest solutions to these problems, many borrowed from other areas of law (e.g., child support enforcement, child custody determinations, enforcement of civil protection orders, involuntary civil commitment).

In 1995, the Arizona Supreme Court reformed the jury trial process by allowing civil jurors to discuss the evidence presented during trial prior to their formal deliberations. This Article examines and evaluates the theoretical, legal, and policy issues raised by this reform and presents the early results of a field experiment that tested the impact of trial discussions. Jurors, judges, attorneys, and litigants in civil jury trials in Arizona were questioned regarding their observations, experiences, and reactions during trial as well as what they perceived to be the benefits and drawbacks of juror discussions. The data revealed that the majority …
