President Julio Roca And The Welsh Communities Of Patagonia, Anne Fountain Jan 1999

President Julio Roca And The Welsh Communities Of Patagonia, Anne Fountain

Faculty Publications

Seen simply as reflections of Argentine history which share the relative tranquility of an attractive neighborhood in Buenos Aires, the Roca library and the Rawson statue seem unlikely links for a little-known chapter in the immigration annals of Argentina. But, in fact, both Rawson and Roca gave special consideration to the Welsh; both are remembered with appreciation; and Roca is something of a hero to the Welsh community because a century ago he personally intervened in an important dispute involving their religious beliefs. The significance of Roca's visits to the Welsh communities in Patagonia in 1899 is the focus of …

The Case For Sound Symbolism, Janis B. Nuckolls Jan 1999

The Case For Sound Symbolism, Janis B. Nuckolls

Faculty Publications

proposal that linguistic sounds such as phonemes, features, syllables, or tones can be meaningful, or sound-symbolic, contradicts the principles of arbitrariness and double articulation that are axiomatic to structural linguistics. Nevertheless, a considerable body of research that supports principles of sound symbolism has accumulated. This review discusses the most widely attested forms of sound symbolism and the research programs linked to sound symbolism that have influenced linguists and anthropologists most. Numerous reports of magnitude sound symbolism in the form of experimental studies and comparative surveys have been integrated into a biologically based theory of its motivation. Magnitude sound symbolism also …

Bilingual Creativity, Multidimensional Analysis, And World Englishes, Wendy Baker, William G. Eggington Jan 1999

Bilingual Creativity, Multidimensional Analysis, And World Englishes, Wendy Baker, William G. Eggington

Faculty Publications

Research in world English literatures has concentrated on qualitative measures of analysis in order to understand what is meant by `bilingual creativity.' These measures demonstrate that there are differences in rhetorical and literary style within world English literatures both in the inner and outer circle. Using Biber's multidimensional analysis (1988) to examine a large corpus of world English literatures written in Indian, West African, Britain, Anglo-American and Mexican American varieties of English, this paper examines whether quantitative analyses can also be insightful and useful in the examination of world English literatures in expanding our understanding of what `bilingual creativity' entails. …

Price And Non-Price Influences On Water Conservation: An Econometric Model Of Aggregate Demand Under Nonlinear Budget Constraints, Leonardo Corral, Anthony C. Fisher, Nile W. Hatch Jan 1999

Price And Non-Price Influences On Water Conservation: An Econometric Model Of Aggregate Demand Under Nonlinear Budget Constraints, Leonardo Corral, Anthony C. Fisher, Nile W. Hatch

Faculty Publications

This paper develops a model of residential water demand under a nonlinear budget constraint. The theoretical model for an individual consumer is adapted to yield an aggregate model that preserves the structure of the individual demand function, and that can be used with aggregate (water district level) data. The model is used to study the influence of pricing and non-price conservation programs on consumption and conservation behavior in three water districts in the San Francisco Bay Area, over a 10-year period that includes both drought and normal years. Empirical results show that pricing can be effective in reducing water consumption, …

Comsumer Bankruptcy's New Clothes: An Empirical Study Of Discharge And Debt Collection In Chapter 13, Scott F. Norberg Jan 1999

Comsumer Bankruptcy's New Clothes: An Empirical Study Of Discharge And Debt Collection In Chapter 13, Scott F. Norberg

Faculty Publications

Consumer bankruptcy filings hit another record high in 1998, with nearly 1.4 million consumers filing for bankruptcy relief. This trend sparked a debate in Congress about means-testing chapter 7 bankruptcy filings. Proponents of reform argued that it would curtail fraud and abuse. Opponents believed that consumer debt was swamping income growth, and that the deregulation of the consumer credit market had led to overgenerous lending and hence to more bankruptcies. This is an empirical study of whether filers for chapter 13 bankruptcy cases are abusing the system, or whether debtors are truly being swamped by debt in excess of their …

Reconstructing Self-Determination: The Role Of Critical Theory In The Positivist International Law Paradigm, Ediberto Román Jan 1999

Reconstructing Self-Determination: The Role Of Critical Theory In The Positivist International Law Paradigm, Ediberto Román

Faculty Publications

This article (or conference transcription) discuses the role that critical race theory may have on what, will be called, self-determination movements. It commences with the introduction of four speakers Taygab Muhmud, Seigfried Weissner, Julie Mertus and Donna Coker, discussing various forms of self-determination movements of indigenous people, the neocolonial plight of the people of South Asia and a comparative analysis of Eastern Europeans. The article then undertakes an innovative critical analysis of the acceptance of the liberal international law doctrine of self-determination. In particular, it will critique the purportedly universal norm of self-determination in order to expose and explain its …

Framers’ Intent And Military Power: Has Supreme Court Deference To The Military Gone Too Far?, Kalyani Robbins

Faculty Publications

The first ten amendments to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1791 and known as the Bill of Rights, create the core of what people today consider their most basic freedoms. Without these rights, and consistent judicial adherence to them, most Americans would not feel secure. There are two major sources of danger to these basic rights: internal and external. Internally, we must protect ourselves from our own infringement of these rights through the firm restrictions that the Constitution places on the government in its treatment of the people. Externally, we must protect our system of maintaining these freedoms from …

Bastardy And The Statute Of Wills: Interpreting A Sixteenth-Century Statute With Cases And Readings, M C. Mirow Jan 1999

Bastardy And The Statute Of Wills: Interpreting A Sixteenth-Century Statute With Cases And Readings, M C. Mirow

Faculty Publications

The Statute of Wills of 1540 created a tax loophole for transfers of property to illegitimate children. Assessments for wardships that would normally be imposed on certain transfers of land to children could be effectively avoided by establishing that the donee was illegitimate, and therefore a stranger to the donor for the purposes of the statute. English lawyers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries educated their colleagues about this newly available loophole. In the inns of court, lawyers discussed the statutory provisions and recent revenue cases from the Court of Wards. This article sets out the loophole, examines how the …

Implications Of The Tax Reform Proposals For Fraud – Or – How To Shift To A Consumption Tax Without Helping The Cheaters, Kalyani Robbins Jan 1999

Implications Of The Tax Reform Proposals For Fraud – Or – How To Shift To A Consumption Tax Without Helping The Cheaters, Kalyani Robbins

Faculty Publications

The vast majority of the proposals on the table today are simply different implementation mechanisms of the same basic idea: a change in the tax base from income to consumption. The purpose of this article is to consider the implications some of these proposals have for the enforcement of tax compliance (prevention of cheating). For this reason, it will only briefly address the impetus for a consumption tax and the policy considerations behind it. The first part will also give short descriptions of the proposals that will be considered in this article: the National Retail Sales Tax, the Savings-Exempt Income …

Health And Educational Outcomes Of Children Who Experienced Severe Neonatal Medical Complications, Timothy B. Smith, Glenna C. Boyce, Glendon Castro Jan 1999

Health And Educational Outcomes Of Children Who Experienced Severe Neonatal Medical Complications, Timothy B. Smith, Glenna C. Boyce, Glendon Castro

Faculty Publications

To determine the long-term developmental and educational outcomes of a sample of low birthweight infants with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), developmental assessments and interviews were conducted eight years after the initiation of an early intervention project. At the time of the follow-up, 62% of children were experiencing some developmental or behavior problems, with visual impairments, cerebral palsy, and attention deficits occurring most frequently. Grade of IVH and the number of days spent in the neonatal intensive care unit were the best predictors of later developmental delays. The sample also scored below average on school achievement; approximately 30% of those in school …

More Precious Than Gold: The Journey To And Through Zion In 1849-50, Fred E. Woods Jan 1999

More Precious Than Gold: The Journey To And Through Zion In 1849-50, Fred E. Woods

Faculty Publications

The California gold rush, the first international gold rush in history, turned the world upside down, reaching its zenith in the years 1849-50. As a result of the rush during these two climactic years, the population swelled our nation's Pacific coast, entitling California to receive statehood in the fall of 1850. During these catalytic years, Latter-day Saints were journeying to the American West for a different kind of treasure. They gathered from afar to their Mormon mecca nestled in the Salt Lake Valley to fulfill their dreams of establishing Zion. Yet the California gold rush had a significant impact on …

Where Do Resources Come From? A Model Of Resource Generation, Paul C. Godfrey, Hal B. Gregersen Jan 1999

Where Do Resources Come From? A Model Of Resource Generation, Paul C. Godfrey, Hal B. Gregersen

Faculty Publications

Although the Resource-Based View of the firm (RBV) continues to gain centrality in the conversation of strategic management, several unanswered questions remain within the emerging paradigm. This article focuses on one of those questions. We propose a causal model of resource generation built around three central constructs: entrepreneurial ability, market context, and organizational context. Entrepreneurial ability generates new asset combinations that are valuable and unique, while market and organizational contexts preserve the value in these new asset combinations by providing barriers to imitation. We build a model and then consider three separate paths for generating idiosyncratic resources within a firm. …

Service-Learning And Management Education A Call To Action, Paul C. Godfrey Jan 1999

Service-Learning And Management Education A Call To Action, Paul C. Godfrey

Faculty Publications

The private sector of United States society (private corporations) currently enjoys the moral authority to set the national agenda. Business schools, because they train future managers, can play a vital role in helping the private sector sustain that moral authority. Specifically, I argue that service-learning pedagogies offer management educators a way to incorporate citizenship skills and moral training into the traditional management curriculum. This article describes the concept of service-learning, reviews the current state of service-learning in management, and argues that service-learning can enhance both the technical capability and moral capability of students. Key issues for faculty members involved in …

Atticus, David, And Raymond: Role Models For Ya Males, Chris Crowe

Faculty Publications

I can't listen to Bob Carlisle's "Butterfly Kisses," a sentimental song about a father and his daughter without crying. Every time I hear it, I want to pull my nearest daughter onto my lap, hold her tight, and bury my face in her shoulder while I cry about the eventual loss of my little girl. Unfortunately—or fortunately, if you're one of my daughters—my maudlin reaction to the song prompted my three teenage daughters to ban the recording from our home, so I rarely got to listen to it—and weep—anymore.

Faculty Publications

Dear Mr. or Ms. English Teacher:

I hope that by the time this arrives the hectic first days and weeks of school are behind you and that you are settled into the work that you and I both love teaching young people about writing, language and of course, literature. I have a keen interest in your work this year, not just because I, too, am a teacher, but also because three of my children are in your English classes. Joanne, my youngest, is in eighth grade and looking forward to her last year of middle school. Carrie, a ninth grader, …

English Teachers Are From Mars, Students Are From Venus (But Ya Books Can Help Interplanetary Understanding), Chris Crowe

Faculty Publications

When I was a kid, people blamed the misunderstandings and tensions between grown-ups and teenagers on the "generation gap." Adolescents and adults butted heads because they were born in different times, into different circumstances. As a teenager with limited experience and understanding, I accepted that explanation as the reason why I didn't think or act the way my parents and teachers did.

Acoustic And Perceptual Improvements In Tracheoesophageal Voice Using A Neck Strap, Christopher Dromey, Carol Kapusta-Shemie Jan 1999

Acoustic And Perceptual Improvements In Tracheoesophageal Voice Using A Neck Strap, Christopher Dromey, Carol Kapusta-Shemie

Faculty Publications

Tracheoesophageal (TE) speech, which relies on pulmonary air directed through a one-way valve from the trachea to the esophagus, has become an effective means of voice restoration for many alaryngeal speakers. Whereas the success rate for TE speech has been reported to reach 80% to 90%, complications are not uncommon. In a few cases, pouching of the neck at the level of the neoglottis has been observed. This has previously been reported to negatively affect functional communication, and has been associated with a flaccid or hypnotic vibratory segment. The application of pressure, either manually or by way of a neck …

Performance Surface Prediction For Wan-Based Clusters, Mark J. Clement, J. Kelly Flanagan, Glenn M. Judd, Bryan S. Morse, Joy L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

The last five years have been a period of exponential growth in the number of machines connected to the Internet and the speed at which these machines communicate. The infrastructure is now in place to consider a nationwide cluster of workstations as a viable parallel processing platform. In order to achieve acceptable performance on this kind of a machine, performance prediction tools must provide information on where to place computational objects. Incorrect object placement can result in poor performance and congestion in the network. This research develops a new paradigm for predicting performance in the Wide Area Network (WAN) based …

Micropolarizer Array For Infrared Imaging Polarimetry, M. W. Jones, Gregory P. Nordin, P. C. Deguzman, J. T. Meier Jan 1999

Micropolarizer Array For Infrared Imaging Polarimetry, M. W. Jones, Gregory P. Nordin, P. C. Deguzman, J. T. Meier

Faculty Publications

The design and fabrication of a micropolarizer array for imaging polarimetry is described for the 3–5-μm-wavelength region. Each micropolarizer consists of a 475-nm-period Mo wire grid in a 16 μm × 16 μm aperture. Interference lithography is used to generate the small grating features through an etch mask layer. Arrays of 256 × 256 micropolarizers at three distinct angular orientations have been fabricated that permit the measurement of the first three Stokes vector components in each pixel of an imaging polarimeter. An imaging system composed of a micropolarizer array integrated directly onto a focal plane array has been assembled, and …

International students often face challenges in adjusting to their new environment without the use of available local supports, such as counseling. Suggestions are provided for forming an outreach support group that enhances international student participation by minimizing stigma associated with mental health services and by addressing both practical and emotional issues.

Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Pugio Predation On Sediment- And Stem-Dwelling Meiofauna: Field And Laboratory Experiments, Christopher S. Gregg, John W. Fleeger Dec 1998

Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Pugio Predation On Sediment- And Stem-Dwelling Meiofauna: Field And Laboratory Experiments, Christopher S. Gregg, John W. Fleeger

Faculty Publications

Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to clarify the predatory role of Palaemonetes pugio Holthius in salt-marsh benthic communities. Field experiments (cage enclosures using P. pugio as a predator) were conducted on unvegetated mudflat and vegetated-marsh sites. Neither sediment- or stem-dwelling meiofaunal abundances were significantly impacted. Laboratory experiments measured the functional response of P. pugio feeding on suspended harpacticoid copepods, tested the efficiency of P. pugio feeding on harpacticoids in sediments, and measured the predation rate of P. pugio on stem-dwelling meiofauna. Grass shrimp feeding rate on suspended copepods followed a type II functional response, increasing with increasing prey density …

The cross section for the photoproduction of events containing three jets with a three-jet invariant mass of M31 > 50 GeV has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The three-jet angular distributions are inconsistent with a uniform population of the available phase space but are well described by parton shower models and script O sign(α α2s) pQCD calculations. Comparisons with the parton shower model indicate a strong contribution from initial state radiation as well as a sensitivity to the effects of colour coherence. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Distribution Of Isolated Volcanoes On The Flanks Of The East Pacific Rise, 15.3°-20°S, Scott M. White, Ken C. Macdonald, Daniel S. Scheirer, Marie-Helene Cormier

Faculty Publications

Volcanic constructions, not associated with seamount (or volcano) chains, are abundant on the flanks of the East Pacific Rise (EPR) but are rare along the axial high. The distribution of isolated volcanoes, based on multibeam bathymetric maps, is approximately symmetric about the EPR axis. This symmetry contrasts with the asymmetries in the distribution of volcano chains (more abundant on the west flank), the seafloor subsidence rates (slower on the west flank), and the distribution of plate-motion-parallel gravity lineaments (more prominento nthe west flank). Most of the isolated volcanoes complete their growth within -14 km of the axis on crust younger …

Hst Observations Of Gro J1655 - 40 In Outburst, Robert I. Hynes

Faculty Publications

We examine the results of a coordinated HST-RXTE-CGRO campaign to study the microquasar GRO J1655-40 during its 1996-7 outburst, focusing on interpretation of the overall anti-correlation seen between optical and X-ray fluxes during the early months of the outburst. Our tools include echo-mapping, optical/UV continuum spectral modelling and analysis of spectral variability. We conclude by suggesting one possible interpretation for the anti-correlation.
