Acifluorfen Sorption, Degradation, And Mobility In A Mississippi Delta Soil, L. A. Gaston, M. A. Locke Jan 2000

Acifluorfen Sorption, Degradation, And Mobility In A Mississippi Delta Soil, L. A. Gaston, M. A. Locke

Faculty Publications

Potential surface water and groundwater contaminants include herbicides that are applied postemergence. Although applied to the plant canopy, a portion of any application reaches the soil either directly or via subsequent foliar washoff. This study examined sorption, degradation, and mobility of the postemergence herbicide acifluorfen (5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid) in Dundee silty clay loam (fine-silty, mixed, thermic, Aeric Ochraqualf) taken from conventional till (CT) and no-till (NT) field plots. Homogeneous surface and subsurface samples were used in the sorption and degradation studies; intact soil columns (30 cm long and 10 cm diam.) were used in the mobility study. Batch sorption isotherms were …

Carbohydrate-Related Changes In Sweetpotato Storage Roots During Development, Don R. La Bonte, David H. Picha, Hester A. Johnson Jan 2000

Carbohydrate-Related Changes In Sweetpotato Storage Roots During Development, Don R. La Bonte, David H. Picha, Hester A. Johnson

Faculty Publications

The quantity and pattern of carbohydrate-related changes during storage root development differed among six sweetpotato cultivars [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Poir. 'Beauregard', 'Heart-o-Gold', 'Jewel', 'Rojo Blanco', 'Travis', and 'White Star']. Measurements were taken for individual sugars, total sugars, alcohol-insoluble solids (AIS, crude starch), and dry weight (DW) at 2-week intervals from 7 to 19 weeks after transplanting (WAT) in two separate years. Sucrose was the major sugar during all stages of development, representing at least 68% of total sugars across all cultivars and dates. Pairwise comparisons showed 'Heart-o-Gold' had the highest sucrose content among the cultivars. Sucrose content increased by 56% …

Chromosome 17 Aneusomy Detected By Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization In Vulvar Squamous Cell Carcinomas And Synchronous Vulvar Skin, J. Andrew Carlson, Kara Healy, Tien Anh Tran, John Malfetano, Vincent L. Wilson, Angela Rohwedder, Jeffrey S. Ross Jan 2000

Chromosome 17 Aneusomy Detected By Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization In Vulvar Squamous Cell Carcinomas And Synchronous Vulvar Skin, J. Andrew Carlson, Kara Healy, Tien Anh Tran, John Malfetano, Vincent L. Wilson, Angela Rohwedder, Jeffrey S. Ross

Faculty Publications

Vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) affects a spectrum of women with granulomatous vulvar diseases, human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, and chronic inflammatory vulvar dermatoses. To determine whether there is evidence of chromosomal instability occurring in synchronous skin surrounding vulvar SCCs, we investigated abnormalities in chromosome 17 copy number. Samples of SCC, vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN), and surrounding vulvar skin were obtained from all vulvar excisions performed for squamous neoplasia at Albany Medical College from 1996 to 1997. Histological categorization, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) for the α satellite region of chromosome 17, DNA content by image analysis, and Ki-67 labeling were …

Arrangements And Local Systems, Daniel C. Cohen, Peter Orlik Jan 2000

Arrangements And Local Systems, Daniel C. Cohen, Peter Orlik

Faculty Publications

We use stratified Morse theory to construct a complex to compute the cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement with coefficients in a complex rank one local system. The linearization of this complex is shown to be the Aomoto complex of the arrangement. Using this result, we establish the relationship between the cohomology support loci of the complement and the resonance varieties of the Orlik-Solomon algebra for any arrangement, and show that the latter are unions of subspace arrangements in general, resolving a conjecture of Falk. We also obtain lower bounds for the local system Betti numbers in terms …

Freezing Tolerance And Nonstructural Carbohydrate Composition Of Carpetgrass (Axonopus Affinis Chase), Edward Bush, Paul Wilson, Dennis Shepard, James Mccrimmon Jan 2000

Freezing Tolerance And Nonstructural Carbohydrate Composition Of Carpetgrass (Axonopus Affinis Chase), Edward Bush, Paul Wilson, Dennis Shepard, James Mccrimmon

Faculty Publications

An experiment to determine the nonstructural carbohydrate composition and nodal survival (LT50) of common carpetgrass was conducted between 1993 and 1994 at Baton Rouge, La. Nonstructural carbohydrates in stolons were primarily sucrose [70-130 mg · g-1 dry weight (DW)] and starch (8-33 mg · g-1 DW). Total nonstructural carbohydrate (TNC) composition of stolons ranged between 30 to 165 mg · g-1 DW. Node survival following exposure to 2 °C ranged from 0% in August-sampled grass to 48% in December. The LT50 following acclimation under field conditions was -2 to -4 °C. Environmental factors influenced nonstructural carbohydrate composition, partitioning, and node …

Enhancement Of Seed Germination In Common Carpetgrass And Centipedegrass Seed, Edward W. Bush, Paul Wilson, Dennis P. Shepard, Gloria Mcclure Jan 2000

Enhancement Of Seed Germination In Common Carpetgrass And Centipedegrass Seed, Edward W. Bush, Paul Wilson, Dennis P. Shepard, Gloria Mcclure

Faculty Publications

Priming or presoaking seed of common carpetgrass (Axonopus affinis Chase) and centipedegrass [Eremochloa ophiuroides Munro. (Kunz)] increased germination percentage and decreased mean time of germination (MTG) at 20, 25, and 30 °C. The effect of presoaking and priming was dependent on grass species and temperature. The optimum seed germination temperature for both of these warm-season species was 30 °C. Maximum effect on common carpetgrass or centipedegrass seeds was achieved by priming in 2% KNO3; higher concentrations did not improve germination percentage or MTG, and 4% was in some cases detrimental. Germination was higher and MTG lower at 20 and 30 …

"A Man In A Painted Garment:" The Social Functions Of Jesting In Elizabethan Rhetoric And Courtesy Manuals, Christopher Holcomb Jan 2000

"A Man In A Painted Garment:" The Social Functions Of Jesting In Elizabethan Rhetoric And Courtesy Manuals, Christopher Holcomb

Faculty Publications

Many Elizabethan rhetoric and courtesy manuals offer jesting as a powerful rhetorical strategy for managing specific situations. Although highly pragmatic, the manuals' treatments of the subject imply a sociology of humor that classifies jests according to the broader social functions they serve: jests which preserve existing social relations and jests which disrupt, or even challenge, them. What eludes this classificatory scheme, however, are the properties of jesting itself. Jesting is always a flirtation with disorder and often serves conservative and disruptive functions simultaneously. If this is so, then the manuals' discussions of jesting replay (and magnify) ambiguities and anxieties characteristic …

Public Opinion About Punishment And Corrections, Francis T. Cullen, Bonnie S. Fisher, Brandon K. Applegate Jan 2000

Public Opinion About Punishment And Corrections, Francis T. Cullen, Bonnie S. Fisher, Brandon K. Applegate

Faculty Publications

"Get tough" control policies in the United States are often portrayed as the reflection of the public's will: Americans are punitive and want offenders locked up. Research from the past decade both reinforces and challenges this assessment. The public clearly accepts, if not prefers, a range of punitive policies (e.g., capital punishment, three-strikes-and-you're-out laws, imprisonment). But support for get-tough policies is "mushy." Thus citizens may be willing to substitute a sentence of life imprisonment without parole for the death penalty. Especially when nonviolent offenders are involved, there is substantial support for intermediate sanctions and for restorative justice. Despite three decades …

Is Malnutrition Declining? An Analysis Of Changes In Levels Of Childhood Malnutrition Since 1980, Mercedes De Onis, Edward A. Frongillo Jr., Monika Blo¨ Ssner

Faculty Publications

Nutritional status is the best global indicator of well-being in children. Although many surveys of children have been conducted since the 1970s, lack of comparability between them has made it difficult to monitor trends in child malnutrition.

Cross-sectional data from 241 nationally representative surveys were analysed in a standard way to produce comparable results of low height-for-age (stunting). Multilevel modelling was applied to estimate regional and global trends from 1980 to 2005.

The prevalence of stunting has fallen in developing countries from 47% in 1980 to 33% in 2000 (i.e. by 40 million), although progress has been uneven according to …

Moderate Intensity Exercise Training Improves Cardiorespiratory Fitness In Women, J. David Branch, Russell R. Pate, Sharon P. Bourque Jan 2000

Moderate Intensity Exercise Training Improves Cardiorespiratory Fitness In Women, J. David Branch, Russell R. Pate, Sharon P. Bourque

Faculty Publications

Among women, there is an increased prevalence of sedentary lifestyle and less participation in physical activity at levels recommended by the Surgeon General. As a result, women have been identified as a target group in public health initiatives to increase physical activity. The health-related benefits of habitual, moderate intensity physical activity are well documented in the epidemiological literature, but less is known about the effect of such physical activity on cardiorespiratory fitness. Our hypothesis was that moderate and vigorous exercise training regimens of similar estimated energy expenditure would result in similar changes in cardiorespiratory fitness. Eighteen sedentary premenopausal women with …

A Mathematical Model For Spatially Varying Extracellular Matrix, J. C. Dallon, J. A. Sherratt Jan 2000

A Mathematical Model For Spatially Varying Extracellular Matrix, J. C. Dallon, J. A. Sherratt

Faculty Publications

Orientation of extracellular matrix fibers in the skin is a key ingredient of tissue appearance and function, and differences in fiber alignment are one of the main distinctions between scar tissue and normal skin. In this paper, the authors develop a mathematical model for alignment of collagen fibers and the fibroblast cells that remodel them; the model extends previous work in which spatial variation was excluded. Numerical simulations of the model are presented, which show spatial variations in alignment over long transients, but with spatially uniform behavior in the long term. This is investigated further via asymptotic analysis, using the …

Modeling Nitrogen Evolution During Coal Pyrolysis Based On A Global Free-Radical Mechanism, Steven T. Perry, Thomas H. Fletcher Jan 2000

Modeling Nitrogen Evolution During Coal Pyrolysis Based On A Global Free-Radical Mechanism, Steven T. Perry, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

A global free-radical mechanism and an associated rate equation for the evolution of light gas nitrogen during coal devolatilization are presented. The light gas nitrogen rate equation was used to modify an existing nitrogen model so that only a network devolatilization model and coal-specific chemical structural input data are required to adequately predict light gas nitrogen release at a variety of pyrolysis conditions. Model predictions show good agreement with nitrogen release data from pyrolysis of coals of rank from lignite to low volatile bituminous at heating rates from 0.5 to 105 K/s, temperatures as high as 2300 K, and …

Going Public: Letters To The World, Deborah Dean

When we consider why most of us write, the reasons tend to focus on expressing ourselves, particularly to an audience. We want our voices to be heard, our thoughts to be given substance and weight. We want someone to know and care about what we have to say In essence, we want to be published. Because of that, we are willing to spend time with our thoughts, to wrestle with them as we try to shape them into a form that will have meaning for others, and we are willing to revise/ reshape/rethink what we write so that it becomes …

Symposium Presentation: Doing Internet Co-Branding Agreements, Eric Goldman

Co-brand agreements are what I do. I am the self-titled "King of CoBrands," as this is what I've been doing with my life.

So, let's talk a little about co-branding agreements and about why they might matter. First let's define our terms.

Now, where there used to be one site, the provider site, there will be two sites, the provider site and co-branded site, which contains the branding of the portal, but contains all the same functionality, or similar functionality, as is in the provider's site.

Then the portal will drive traffic to this co-branding site, for purposes that we'll …

Understanding Internet Co-Branding Deals, Eric Goldman, Candice Lee

Faculty Publications

The Internet has spawned new business practices regarding the ways users access and obtain information and services. Because linking can create a network of web pages that appear integrated and seamless to users, many Internet companies enter what are known as co-branding relationships. This article addresses a common type of co-branding relationship in which a "provider" maintains a set of pages ("the co-branded site") that looks and feels like the "brander's" web site. The co-branded site is promoted on the brander's web site through linking.

Introduction: Tiger Woods And The First Amendment, Tyler T. Ochoa Jan 2000

Introduction: Tiger Woods And The First Amendment, Tyler T. Ochoa

Faculty Publications

Although the right of publicity has been recognized as a distinct common-law doctrine since 1953, only in recent years have courts begun to take the First Amendment seriously as a limit on the extent to which sports figures and other celebrities can use the doctrine to control the use of their images. It is widely recognized that the government may prohibit false and misleading speech, such as an advertisement that falsely implies an endorsement of a product by an individual, without violating the First Amendment. Similarly, it is generally acknowledged that the First Amendment protects the depiction of celebrities in …

Law, Ethics, And The Good Samaritan: Should There Be A Duty To Rescue?, Kathleen M. Ridolfi

Faculty Publications

The interdependence of law and morality, the circular influences of one on the other, puts us in a position to fear what we want the law to do. We embrace a legal system that promotes morality, that makes better citizens of us, but we worry that the law will cross an elusive line and infringe on individual rights. For this reason we are careful, and should remain so, in limiting enforcement of laws to reflect only those values that emerge from the overall agreement of the community where they will be enforced.

In this paper, I have focused primarily on …
