Sea Level Pressure Variability In The Amundsen Sea Region Inferred From A West Antarctic Glaciochemical Record, Karl J. Kreutz, Paul A. Mayewski, Iqbal I. Pittalwala, L. David Meeker, Mark S. Twickler, Sallie I. Whitlow

Faculty Publications

Using European Center for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) numerical operational analyses, sea ice extent records, and station pressure data, we investigate the influence of sea level pressure variability in the Amundsen Sea region on a West Antarctic (Siple Dome) glaciochemical record. Empirical orthogonal function analysis of the high‐resolution Siple Dome multivariate ice core chemical time series record (SDEOF1) documents lower tropospheric transport of sea‐salt aerosols to the site. During 1985–1994 the SDEOF1 record of high (low) aerosol transport corresponds to anomalously low (high) sea level pressure (SLP) in the Amundsen Sea region. Spatial correlation patterns between ECMWF monthly SLP fields …

Multilevel Coded Modulation For Unequal Error Protection And Multistage Decoding—Part I: Symmetric Constellations, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Marc P. C. Fossorier, Shu Lin, Hideki Imai

Faculty Publications

In this paper, theoretical upper bounds and computer simulation results on the error performance of multilevel block coded modulations for unequal error protection (UEP) and multistage decoding are presented. It is shown that nonstandard signal set partitionings and multistage decoding provide excellent UEP capabilities beyond those achievable with conventional coded modulation. The coding scheme is designed in such a way that the most important information bits have a lower error rate than other information bits. The large effective error coefficients, normally associated with standard mapping by set partitioning, are reduced by considering nonstandard partitionings of the underlying signal set. The …

The electronic structure of spinel-type Cu1-xNixRh2S4 (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0) and CuRh2Se4 compounds has been studied by means of x-ray photoelectron (SPS) and fluorescent spectroscopy. Cu L3, Ni L3, S L2,3, and Se M2,3 x-ray emission spectra (XES) were measured near thresholds at Beamline 8.0 of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's Advanced Light Source. XES measurements of the constituent atoms of these compounds, reduced to the same binding energy scale, are found to be in excellent agreement with XPS valence bands. The calculated XES spectra which include dipole matrix elements show that the partial density of states reproduce experimental spectra …

Responses Of Phytoplankton And Pfiesteria-Like Dinoflagellate Zoospores To Nutrient Enrichment In The Neuse River Estuary, North Carolina, Usa, James L. Pinckney, Hans W. Paerl, Elin Haugen, Patricia A. Tester

Faculty Publications

The recently described toxic dinoflagellate Pfiestena piscicida and morphologically similar Pfiesteria-like dinoflagellates have become a major water quality issue with possible fish mortality and reported human health implications. The linkages between accelerated nutrient loading, eutrophication, and the proliferation of this group of dinoflagellates, however, are not well established for natural Systems. Phytoplankton pnmary production may provide a key link between nutrient inputs and potential outbreaks of Pfiesteria-like biflagellated zoospores in the Neuse River Estuary, North Carolina. The impacts of nutrient (NO3- -nitrogen and PO43- -phosphorus) supply rates, sediment-water column exchange, water column mixing, and phytoplankton prey …

Storytellers: Scandinavian's Art Told Of Restoration, J. Michael Hunter

Faculty Publications

Missionary work in Scandinavia began 150 years ago with the arrival of the first LDS missionaries in Denmark on June 14, 1850. In keeping with the observance of the sesquicentennial of the Scandinavian Mission, the Church News presents this article by J. Michael Hunter about two prominent Latter-day Saint artists from earlier days in that part of the world. The art and work of Carl Christian Anton Christensen (1831-1921) from Denmark and Danquart Anton Weggeland (1827-1918) from Norway are discussed, focusing on their use of art to tell stories. Images of their art accompany the article.

Adaptive Mesh Refinement Approach To The Construction Of Initial Data For Black Hole Collisions, Peter Diener, Nina Jansen, Alexei Khokhlov, Igor Novikov Jan 2000

Adaptive Mesh Refinement Approach To The Construction Of Initial Data For Black Hole Collisions, Peter Diener, Nina Jansen, Alexei Khokhlov, Igor Novikov

Faculty Publications

The initial data for black hole collisions are constructed using a conformal-imaging approach and a new adaptive mesh refinement technique, a fully threaded tree (FTT). We developed a second-order accurate approach to the solution of the constraint equations on a non-uniformly refined high-resolution Cartesian mesh including second-order accurate treatment of boundary conditions at the black hole throats. FTT-based mesh refinement reduced memory and computer time requirements by several orders of magnitude compared to a uniform grid and allowed the construction of accurate initial data sets on Cartesian meshes. Test computations show quadratic convergence of the solutions with increasing numerical resolution.

Faculty Publications

The photodegradation mechanism due to synchrotron radiation exposure of crystalline poly[vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroetylene, P(VDF-TrFE)] copolymer thin films has been studied with ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) and mass spectroscopy. Upon increasing exposure to x-ray white light (hv≤ 1000eV), UPS measurements reveal that substantial chemical modifications occur in P(VDF-TrFE) 5 monolayer films, including the emergence of new valence band features near the Fermi level, indicating a semimetallic photodegradeted product. The photodetached fragments of the copolymer consist mainly of H2, HF, CHF, CH2. This x-ray exposure study demonstrates that P(VDF-TrFE) films, possessing unique technologically important properties, can be directly patterned by x-ray lithographic processes. …

Alcohol, Tobacco, And Pharmaceutical Industry Funding: Considerations For Organizations Serving Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender Communities, Laurie A. Drabble

Faculty Publications

Emerging research suggests that alcohol, tobacco and drug-related problems may be higher in lesbian and gay communities than in the population as a whole. At the same time, alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceutical industries have increased marketing strategies that are targeted specifically to lesbian and gay communities. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) and HTV/AIDS organizations, often marginalized and under-funded, have frequently faced significant challenges in funding programs and special events. These organizations are often the very same groups needed to promote and support effective substance abuse countermeasures in LGBT communities. Agency leaders, community members, and substance abuse prevention advocates all …

Service-Learning As A Tool For Enhancing Student Outcomes In A College-Level Lecture Course, Amy Strage

Faculty Publications

This article reports on the effects of infusing a 20-hour per semester service-learning requirement into a large Introductory Child Development course. Analyses of student outcomes on course assignments revealed that the 166 students in the service-learning cohorts (2 classes) out-performed the 309 students who took the course during the three semesters prior to the introduction of the service-learning requirement. The advantage for the service-learning students appeared to stem primarily from stronger performance on narrative assessments (midterm and take-home final essays), and appeared to manifest itself only later in the semester. Analyses of students’ journals confirmed that students reflected thoughtfully about …
