Home Ranges Of Rat Snakes (Colubridae: Elaphe) In Different Habitats, Stephen J. Mullin, William H. N. Gutzke, Gary D. Zenitsky, Robert J. Cooper Jan 2000

Home Ranges Of Rat Snakes (Colubridae: Elaphe) In Different Habitats, Stephen J. Mullin, William H. N. Gutzke, Gary D. Zenitsky, Robert J. Cooper

Faculty Publications

Based on our findings, we suggest that rat snakes represent not only a major predator of kites, but also of other canopy and mid-story nesting species in the southeastern United States. For example, rat snakes are the most dominant snake nest predator of bird nests throughout the Southeast (DeGregorio et al. 2014) and are skilled tree climbers that often occupy arboreal habitats (Jackson 1976, Keller and Heske 2000, Sperry et al. 2009), particularly in bottomland forests (Mullin et al. 2000, Carfagno and Weatherhead 2009). Thus, the role of rat snakes as predators of nests above the understory is likely underappreciated …

Aqueous Equilibria: Acids, Bases, And Solubility. A General Chemistry Laboratory Experiment, Michael A. Janusa Jan 2000

Aqueous Equilibria: Acids, Bases, And Solubility. A General Chemistry Laboratory Experiment, Michael A. Janusa

Faculty Publications

We refer to two major types of general chemistry freshman laboratory experiments: discovery and cookbook. The typical Freshman enrolled in general chemistry has the skills to perform an experiment that is somewhere between cookbook and discovery, and we have developed a laboratory experiment that is midway between these extremes. This experiment aids the student's understanding of the concept of aqueous equilibria. In this experiment, students are asked to prepare and measure the pH of a variety of acidic and basic solutions. Students are also asked to calculate pH values from literature dissociation constants and dissociation constants from their experimental pH …

Solidification / Stabilization Of Lead With The Aid Of Bagasse As An Additive To Portland Cement, Michael A. Janusa Jan 2000

Solidification / Stabilization Of Lead With The Aid Of Bagasse As An Additive To Portland Cement, Michael A. Janusa

Faculty Publications

Solidification/stabilization (S/S) of hazardous waste is a widely used technology; therefore, it is crucial to evaluate its effectiveness and make attempts to improve the technique. A better matrix for S/S of hazardous waste was designed that is effective and economically feasible. This was accomplished by adding bagasse (byproduct of milling or diffusing sugar cane) to the waste/cement matrix. Lead nitrate was used as the model heavy metal waste with a 10or 15% lead by weight to cement loading. Samples were cured for 7, 14, and 28 days at 24°C. Samples containing bagasse typically resulted in TCLP (modified) extract lead concentrations …

Palladium-Catalyzed Carboxylative Coupling Of Allylstannanes And Allyl Halides, Russell J. Franks Jan 2000

Palladium-Catalyzed Carboxylative Coupling Of Allylstannanes And Allyl Halides, Russell J. Franks

Faculty Publications

A three-component carboxylative coupling between allyl halides, allylstannanes, and CO2 to produce allyl esters is catalyzed by Pd and Pt phosphine complexes. Allyl chloride and allyltributylstannane are thus converted to propenyl butenoate in excellent yield. Cross coupling of two different allyl components produces a nearly statistical mixture of all four possible esters. Tentative mechanistic pathways for the catalytic reaction are proposed.

Banking Regulation: Its History And Future, Jerry W. Markham Jan 2000

Banking Regulation: Its History And Future, Jerry W. Markham

Faculty Publications

This article traces the history of the growth and regulation of banking services in the United States. That history will show how the existing regulatory structure was developed in response to demands of the Civil War and a populist crusade against the “money trust.” That effort reached its zenith with the New Deal legislation of the 1930s, but began to fall apart as financial services consolidated. The article will then show how the financial services industries (banking, insurance, securities and derivatives) began to merge in their product base while at the same time separating on a fault line between institutional …

The Power Of Codification In Latin America: Simón Bolívar And The Code Napoléon, M C. Mirow Jan 2000

The Power Of Codification In Latin America: Simón Bolívar And The Code Napoléon, M C. Mirow

Faculty Publications

Codification can be an effective means to centralize and to consolidate state power. The use of codification in this manner runs against the commonly perceived notion that it promotes republican and egalitarian values. As Simon Bolivar's dictatorship quickly crumbled around him, he turned to codification based on the Code Napoleon as part of an attempt to unify Gran Colombia. Factors leading him to this undertaking and source were the need for legal reform, his emulation of Napoleon, his exposure to the works of Jeremy Bentham, and, speculatively, the influence of Andres Bello. Boivar's attempt at codification was not to complete …

Fashionable Genetic Explanations In The Courtroom: Litigating Personal Injuries Based On Genetic Risk, Jennifer Wriggins Jan 2000

Fashionable Genetic Explanations In The Courtroom: Litigating Personal Injuries Based On Genetic Risk, Jennifer Wriggins

Faculty Publications

New developments in molecular genetics hold much promise for society. Gene therapy research is underway with the aim of helping to fight, and perhaps even eliminate some diseases. DNA data can be used as evidence to help free innocent people and put guilty ones in jail. Agricultural biotechnology can make crops and pesticides more productive. And cloning may offer exciting potential. There is little doubt that further· developments in the areas of genetics and biotechnology will change our lives in unanticipated ways.

Despite the potential benefits to society, there exist valid and serious I concerns about the potential for misuse …

Financial Returns On Timberlands In Mississippi Between 1977 And 1999, Andrew J. Hartsell, Steven H. Bullard Jan 2000

Financial Returns On Timberlands In Mississippi Between 1977 And 1999, Andrew J. Hartsell, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

The objective of this study is to compute the real annual rates of return from mature, undisturbed timberlands in Mississippi during a 17-year period (1977-1994). This was done using Southern Research Station, Forest Inventory and Analysis data on timber volumes and Timber Mart-South data on timber prices. Simple and adjusted financial maturity models were used to estimate rates of return. Average annual rates of change in value were computed and compared for four forest types across Mississippi. The average annual rate of change in volume was also computed for these stands and compared to the financial rates of return. Three …

Stand Structure And Species Composition In Bottomland Hardwood Forests Of East Texas, A. Gordon Holley, Leslie A. Dale, Brian P. Oswald, Gary D. Kronrad Jan 2000

Stand Structure And Species Composition In Bottomland Hardwood Forests Of East Texas, A. Gordon Holley, Leslie A. Dale, Brian P. Oswald, Gary D. Kronrad

Faculty Publications

Bottomland hardwood forests, growing on the flood plains of rivers and streams, comprise about 14 percent (1.6 million acres) of the total commercial forest land in East Texas. These stands represent high values for a variety of forest uses such as timber production and wildlife habitat. However, information on these forests is not as complete as that of the southern U.S. For this study, data from 445 ten-factor variable radius inventory points were used to characterize stand structure, species composition and the general condition of bottomland hardwood forest throughout East Texas. The importance of this information and its impact on …

Irrigated And Unirrigated Eastern Cottonwood And Water Oak In A Short Rotation Fiber System On A Former Agricultural Site, Jimmie L. Yeiser

Faculty Publications

Abstract-Seedlings from an open-pollinated family of water oak (Quercus L) and cuttings from clones of eastern cottonwood (Populus Bartr. ex Marsh) and hybrid poplar (P. Torr. and Gray X P. Bartr. ex Marsh.) were tested on a Perry clay soil in east central Arkansas (St Francis County). The test site received a preplant application of 100 pounds of nitrogen per acre and weed control for two growing seasons. Unirrigated and irrigated test families were monitored for survival and growth through age two. Some Populus clones survived best when irrigated and other clones when unirrigated. All test material exhibited significantly more …

Life In A Pine Cone, David L. Kulhavy Jan 2000

Life In A Pine Cone, David L. Kulhavy

Faculty Publications

This exercise focuses on a little-known microhabitat -- the pine cone. A pine cone's primary function is, of course, reproduction ... housing the seeds of the next generation of conifer trees. However, pine cones are also the basis of a food web that provides both resources and living space for a wide variety of small arthropod species. The procedure outlined below is designed to examine this microhabitat and compare its community diversity among different species of conifers and habitats.

The exercise is based on a 1985 paper, Life in a Pine Cone, by David L. Kulhavy, Robert S. Baldridge and …

Soil And Nutrient Loss Following Site Preparation Burning, J. P. Field, Kenneth W. Farrish, E. A. Carter Jan 2000

Soil And Nutrient Loss Following Site Preparation Burning, J. P. Field, Kenneth W. Farrish, E. A. Carter

Faculty Publications

Sediment loss and nutrient concentrations in runoff were evaluated to determine the effects of site preparation burning on a recently harvested loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) site in east Texas. Sediment and nutrient losses prior to treatment were approximately the same from control plots and pretreatment burn plots. Nutrient analysis of runoff samples indicated that the prescribed burn caused increased losses of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg from treatment plots. Preliminary results indicate a significant increase in sediment concentration and sediment loss following the prescribed burning application. The data indicate a gradual decline in sediment loss and nutrient …

Food Plot Use By Juvenile Northern Bobwhites In East Texas, D. Scott Parsons, R. Montague Whiting Jr., Xiangwen Liu, Donald R. Dietz Jan 2000

Food Plot Use By Juvenile Northern Bobwhites In East Texas, D. Scott Parsons, R. Montague Whiting Jr., Xiangwen Liu, Donald R. Dietz

Faculty Publications

We examined use of spring-summer (i.e., warm-season) food plots by northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) with broods using radio telemetry on a 563-ha study area in Trinity County, eastern Texas, where habitat was modified to enhance it for these birds. Bobwhites from South Texas and disjunct areas of East Texas were introduced to supplement a small, resident population. All relocated and most resident bobwhites were fitted with necklace-style transmitters. Bobwhites which produced chicks were intensively radiotracked (≥3 times/day) for ≥4 weeks or until the radio-marked parent was lost. Nine hens moved their broods to food plots within an average of 2.1 …

Reproduction Of Relocated And Resident Northern Bobwhites In East Texas, D. Scott Parsons, R. Montague Whiting Jr., Xiangwen Liu, Brad S. Mueller, Stanley L. Cook

Faculty Publications

We examined reproduction by relocated and resident northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) on an intensively managed 563-ha study area in Trinity County, eastern Texas. During the late winters of 1990-1992, 155 South Texas (84 hens, 71 cocks) and 136 East Texas (64 hens, 72 cocks) bobwhites were captured, radio-tagged, and relocated to the study area; 139 resident birds (73 hens, 66 cocks) were also captured, radio-tagged, and released at the point of capture. For the 3 years combined, the 33 South Texas, 33 East Texas, and 39 resident hens alive at the beginning of the breeding season produced 6, 13, and …

Adjusting Discount Rates For Income Taxes And Inflation: A Three-Step Proces, Steven H. Bullard, John E. Gunter Jan 2000

Adjusting Discount Rates For Income Taxes And Inflation: A Three-Step Proces, Steven H. Bullard, John E. Gunter

Faculty Publications

Income taxes and inflation must be correctly accounted for in forest valuation and investment analysis. In a specific analysis, the discount rate and all costs and revenues should be either before or after taxes, and they should include or exclude inflation consistently. We summarize eight formulas for adjusting discount rates for income taxes and inflation in a simple three-step process. A one-page figure is presented that can be used as a stand-alone tool for correctly adjusting discount rates. South. J. Appl. For. 24(4):193-195.

Tort Liability, Religious Entities, And The Decline Of Constitutional Protection, Scott C. Idleman Jan 2000

Tort Liability, Religious Entities, And The Decline Of Constitutional Protection, Scott C. Idleman

Faculty Publications

This article examines the long-term viability of the First Amendment prohibition on the adjudication of legal actions requiring the resolution of religious questions, such as disputes over theological doctrine, scriptural interpretation, or ecclesiastical law. In particular, the article focuses on tort suits against religious institutions and clergy, often stemming from the latter's alleged misconduct towards congregants or children. Part I contends that the bar on certain tort actions is actually an application of a more general prohibition on the adjudication of religious questions and examines the contours of this prohibition and its specific application in the tort context. Part II …
