Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) or Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is the only known human member of the Rhadinovirus genus of the gammaherpesvirus subfamily. Antibodies against peptides representing portions of the amino-and carboxyl-termini of HHV-8 gB were produced and used to detect gB expression in Vero cells transfected with the gB gene, in the HHV- 8-harboring cell line, BCBL-1, and in purified virions. Expression of gB was detected in approximately 3% of uninduced BCBL-1 cells, while up to 30% of the cells expressed gB after 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) induction of virus replication. Indirect immunofluorescence assays and confocal microscopy showed that gB was …

Strong Species Dependence Of High Order Photoelectron Production In Alkali Metal Atoms, M. B. Gaarde, K. J. Schafer, K. C. Kulander, B. Sheehy, Dalwoo Kim, L. F. Dimauro
Faculty Publications
We present a theoretical and experimental study of the production of very high order photoelectrons from alkali metal atoms interacting with intense, midinfrared radiation. The strength of this process shows an unexpectedly strong species dependence. We find that this dependence can be explained via the difference in the cross section for electron-ion scattering from the different atoms. This allows us to directly relate the high energy portion of the photoelectron spectrum to specific features of the electron-ion potential. © 2000 The American Physical Society.
Effects Of Prolonged Soil Drought On Ch4 Oxidation In A Temperate Spruce Forest, W. Borken, R. Brumme, Y. J. Xu
Effects Of Prolonged Soil Drought On Ch4 Oxidation In A Temperate Spruce Forest, W. Borken, R. Brumme, Y. J. Xu
Faculty Publications
Our objective was to determine potential impacts of changes in rainfall amount and distribution on soil CH4 oxidation in a temperate forest ecosystem. We constructed a roof below the canopy of a 65-year-old Norway spruce forest (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and simulated two climate change scenarios: (1) an extensively prolonged summer drought of 172 days followed by a rewetting period of 19 days in 1993 and (2) a less intensive summer drought of 108 days followed by a rewetting period of 33 days in 1994. CH4 oxidation, soil matric potential, and soil temperature were measured hourly to daily over a …
Can Light Echoes Account For The Slow Decay Of Type Iin Supernovae?, Bruce Roscherr, Bradley E. Schaefer
Can Light Echoes Account For The Slow Decay Of Type Iin Supernovae?, Bruce Roscherr, Bradley E. Schaefer
Faculty Publications
The spectra of Type Un supernovae indicate the presence of a preexisting slow, dense circumstellar wind (CSW). If the CSW extends sufficiently far from the progenitor star, then dust formation should occur in the wind. The light from the supernova explosion will scatter off this dust and produce a light echo. Continuum emission seen after the peak will have contributions from both this echo as well as from the shock of the ejecta colliding with the CSW, with a fundamental question of which source dominates the continuum. We calculate the brightness of the light echo as a function of time …

Average Energy Flow Of Optical Pulses In Dispersive Media, Scott Glasgow, Michael Ware, Justin Peatross
Average Energy Flow Of Optical Pulses In Dispersive Media, Scott Glasgow, Michael Ware, Justin Peatross
Faculty Publications
The arrival time of a light pulse at a point in space is defined using a time expectation integral over the Poynting vector. The delay between pulse arrival times at two distinct points is shown to consist of two parts: a spectral superposition of group delays (inverse of group velocity) and a delay due to spectral reshaping via absorption or amplification. The result provides a context wherein group velocity is always meaningful even for broad band pulses and when the group velocity is superluminal or negative. The result imposes luminality on sharply defined pulses.

The Character Of Ash Deposits And The Thermal Performance Of Furnaces, T. F. Wall, S. P. Bhattacharya, Larry Lin Baxter 8507091, G. Richards, J. N. Harb
Faculty Publications
The character of fireside ash deposits depend on the processes by which deposits are formed and subsequent reactions within the deposit and with furnace gases. The properties influencing furnace heat transfer, absorptivity for radiative transfer and thermal conductivity for conductive transfer are shown from many measurements to depend on this character. Illustrative trends in these properties as deposits mature and grow are presented together with their effect on furnace exit temperature and efficiency. The reflective character of initial deposits from particular coals is then considered with predictions and measurements of the spectral character of such deposits, during the first three …

Close Limit Of Grazing Black Hole Collisions: Non-Spinning Holes, Gaurav Khanna, Reinaldo Gleiser, Richard Price, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
Using approximate techniques we study the final moments of the collision of two (individually non-spinnning) black holes which inspiral into each other. The approximation is based on treating the whole spacetime as a single distorted black hole. We obtain estimates for the radiated energy, angular momentum and waveforms for the gravitational waves produced in such a collision. The results can be of interest for analysing the data that will be forthcoming from gravitational wave interferometric detectors, like the LIGO, GEO, LISA, VIRGO and TAMA projects.
Some Generalizations Of The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Equations, Michael M. Tom
Some Generalizations Of The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Equations, Michael M. Tom
Faculty Publications
The question of globalization of solutions of the Cauchy problem for some generalizations of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations of the form (ut + upux -Dαxux)x + εuyy = 0, where Dx = (- ∂2x)1/2 and ε = ± 1 is examined. It is shown that for ε = -1 and α ≥ 2, a global estimate on solutions can be derived for large initial data provided that p < 4α/4 + α. A consequence of this is that if a is large enough, the local solution in Hs(ℝ2) can be globally continued. © 2000 Academic Press.
Alternate Path Routing For Multicast, Daniel Zappala
Alternate Path Routing For Multicast, Daniel Zappala
Faculty Publications
Alternate path routing has been well-explored in telecommunication networks as a means of decreasing the call blocking rate and increasing network utility. However, aside from some work applying these concepts to unicast flows, alternate path routing has received little attention in the Internet community. We describe and evaluate an architecture for alternate path routing for multicast flows. For path installation, we design a receiver-oriented alternate path protocol and prove that it reconfigures multicast trees without introducing loops. For path computation, we propose a scalable local search heuristic that allows receivers to find alternate paths using only partial network information. We …
Strategic Auditing In A Political Hierarchy: An Informational Model Of The Supreme Court's Certiorari Decisions, Charles M. Cameron, Jeffrey A. Segal, Donald Songer
Strategic Auditing In A Political Hierarchy: An Informational Model Of The Supreme Court's Certiorari Decisions, Charles M. Cameron, Jeffrey A. Segal, Donald Songer
Faculty Publications
We examine how the Supreme Court uses signals and indices from lower courts to determine which cases to review. In our game theoretic model, a higher court cues from publicly observable case facts, the known preferences of a lower court and its derision. The lower court attempts to enforce its own preferences, exploiting ambiguity in cases' fact patterns. In equilibrium, a conservative higher court declines to review conservative decisions from lower courts regardless of the facts of die case or the relative ideology of the judges. But a conservative higher court probabilistically reviews liberal decisions, with the "audit rate" tied …
Effect Of Interfacial Tension On Propagating Polymerization Fronts, R. Texier-Picard, John A. Pojman, Vitaly Volpert
Effect Of Interfacial Tension On Propagating Polymerization Fronts, R. Texier-Picard, John A. Pojman, Vitaly Volpert
Faculty Publications
This paper is devoted to the investigation of polymerization fronts converting a liquid monomer into a liquid polymer. We assume that the monomer and the polymer are immiscible and study the influence of the interfacial tension on the front stability. The mathematical model consists of the reaction-diffusion equations coupled with the Navier-Stokes equations through the convection terms. The jump conditions at the interface take into account the interfacial tension. Simple physical arguments show that the same temperature distribution could not lead to Marangoni instability for a nonreacting system. We fulfill a linear stability analysis and show that interaction of the …

Modeling The Statistical Time And Angle Of Arrival Characteristics Of An Indoor Multipath Channel, Michael A. Jensen, Brian D. Jeffs, A. Lee Swindlehurst, Quentin H. Spencer
Faculty Publications
Most previously proposed statistical models for the indoor multipath channel include only time of arrival characteristics. However, in order to use statistical models in simulating or analyzing the performance of systems employing spatial diversity combining, information about angle of arrival statistics is also required. Ideally, it would be desirable to characterize the full spare-time nature of the channel. In this paper, a system is described that was used to collect simultaneous time and angle of arrival data at 7 GHz. Data processing methods are outlined, and results obtained from data taken in two different buildings are presented. Based on the …
Designing Human-Centered Automation: Tradeoffs In Collision Avoidance System Design, Michael A. Goodrich, Erwin R. Boer
Designing Human-Centered Automation: Tradeoffs In Collision Avoidance System Design, Michael A. Goodrich, Erwin R. Boer
Faculty Publications
Technological advances have made plausible the design of automated systems that share responsibility with a human operator. The decision to use automation to assist or replace a human operator in safety-critical tasks must account for not only the technological capabilities of the sensor and control subsystems, but also the autonomy, capabilities, and preferences of the human operator. By their nature, such human-centered automation problems have multiple attributes: an attribute reflecting human goals and capabilities, and an attribute reflecting automation goals and capabilities. Although good theories exist that describe portions of human behavior generation, in the absence of a general theory …

Managing Temporal Data In A Comprehensive Modeling Environment, Norman L. Jones, E. James Nelson, Colby T. Manwaring
Managing Temporal Data In A Comprehensive Modeling Environment, Norman L. Jones, E. James Nelson, Colby T. Manwaring
Faculty Publications
Numerous graphical pre- and post-processors have been developed for numerical modeling. Many of these systems support numerical models that can be used for both steady state and transient simulations. Dealing with transient data can be particularly difficult in such an environment due to the differing time scales and units associated with transient field data and boundary conditions. A data model and a set of functions are presented in this paper as a simple, yet powerful strategy for managing temporal data in a comprehensive modeling environment. The strategy makes it possible to seamlessly integrate multiple types of transient data and convert …

We report on structural, optical, and electrical properties of AlxInyGa1−x−yNGaNheterostructures grown on sapphire and 6H–SiC substrates. Our results demonstrate that incorporation of In reduces the lattice mismatch, Δa, between AlInGaN and GaN, and that an In to Al ratio of close to 1:5 results in nearly strain-free heterostructures. The observed reduction in band gap,ΔEg, determined from photoluminescence measurements, is more than 1.5 times higher than estimated from the linear dependencies of Δa and ΔEg on the In molar fraction. The incorporation of In and resulting changes in the built-in strain in …

The forward-jet cross section in deep inelastic e + p scattering has been measured using the ZEUS detector at HERA with an integrated luminosity of 6.36 pb -1 . The jet cross section is presented as a function of jet transverse energy squared, E(T,jet)/ 2 , and Q 2 in the kinematic ranges 10 -2 < E(T,jet)/ 2 /Q 2 < 10 2 and 2.5 · 10 -4 < x < 8.0 · 10 -2 . Since the perturbative QCD predictions for this cross section are sensitive to the treatment of the log(E(T,jet)/ 2 /Q2) terms, this measurement provides an important test. The measured cross section is compared to the predictions of a next-to-leading order pQCD calculation as well as to various leading-order Monte Carlo models. Whereas the predictions of all models agree with the measured cross section in the region of small E(T,jet/ 2 /Q 2 only one model, which includes a resolved photon component, describes the data over the whole kinematic range. The dissociation of PH3 from the 18-electron system CpMoX(PH3)3 to afford the corresponding 16-electron CpMoX(PH3)2 fragment has been investigated theoretically by density functional theory for X = H, CH3, F, Cl, Br, I, OH, and PH2. The product is found to prefer a triplet spin state for all X ligands except PH2, the singlet-triplet gap varying between 1.7 kcal/mol for OH to 8.7 kcal/mol for F. The Mo-PH3 bond dissociation energy to the 16-electron ground state varies dramatically across the series, from 4.5 kcal/mol for OH to 23.5 kcal/mol for H, and correlates with experimental observations on trisubstituted phosphine derivatives. …

Short-duration flares are well known to occur on cool main-sequence stars as well as on many types of "exotic" stars. Ordinary main-sequence stars are usually pictured as being static on timescales of millions or billions of years. Our Sun has occasional flares involving up to ∼1031 ergs that produce optical brightenings too small in amplitude to be detected in disk-integrated brightness. However, we identify nine cases of superflares involving 1033-1038 ergs on normal solar-type stars. That is, these stars are on or near the main sequence, are of spectral class F8-G8, are single (or in very wide binaries), are not …

This study examined associations between psychosocial factors and physical activity in a group of youth (n=520). Students completed the Previous Day Physical Activity Recall and a survey of potential determinants of physical activity. Regression analyses of intentions to be physically active revealed that enjoyment and self-efficacy predicted intentions for both males and females. Attitudes predicted moderate to vigorous activity (MVPA), and enjoyment and self-efficacy predicted vigorous activity (VPA) for males. Self-efficacy predicted both MVPA and VPA for females. The findings suggest that intervention programs targeted at youth should include developmentally appropriate activities that are fun and promote physical …

Numerical Aspects Of Discrete And Continuum Hybrid Models In Cell Biology, J. C. Dallon
Faculty Publications
In this paper we introduce a method of modeling which mixes continuum and discrete variables, and explain two models in cell biology that use this method. The first application deals with wound healing, more specifically the collagen alignment in scar tissue formation and the second models early aggregation in the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum. We solve these models using numerical techniques similar to the particle-in-cell method which requires that the discrete and continuum variables are interpolated one to the other. The implementational and numerical details are discussed in an informal and practical manner with particular attention given to the …
