Diamagnetic Persistent Current In Diffusive Normal-Metal Rings, E. M.Q. Jariwala, P. Mohanty, M. B. Ketchen, Richard A. Webb Feb 2001

Diamagnetic Persistent Current In Diffusive Normal-Metal Rings, E. M.Q. Jariwala, P. Mohanty, M. B. Ketchen, Richard A. Webb

Faculty Publications

We have measured a diamagnetic persistent current with flux periodicities of both h/e and h/2e in an array of thirty diffusive mesoscopic gold rings. At the lowest temperatures, the magnitudes of the currents per ring corresponding to the h/e- and h/2e-periodic responses are both comparable to the Thouless energy Ec≡ħ/τD, where τD is the diffusion time. Taken in conjunction with earlier experiments, our results strongly challenge the conventional theories of persistent current. We consider a new approach associated with the saturation of …

Expression Characteristics Of The Transfer-Related Kilb Gene Product Of Streptomyces Plasmid Pij101: Implications For The Plasmid Spread Function, G. S. Pettis, N. Ward, K. L. Schully

Faculty Publications

Intermycelial transfer of Streptomyces plasmid pIJ101 occurs prior to cellular differentiation and is mediated by plasmid functions that are also required for production of zones of growth-inhibited recipient cells (i.e., pocks) that develop around individual donors during mating on agar medium. Several other pIJ101 functions, including that of the kilB gene, whose unregulated expression on pIJ101 is lethal, are required for normal pock size and so have been postulated to mediate intramycelial spread of the plasmid throughout recipient cells. Using antibodies raised against a KilB fusion protein expressed in Escherichia coli, native KilB protein was detected throughout development of pIJ101-containing …

Operation of InGaNmultiple-quantum-well(MQW)light-emitting diodes(LEDs) with quaternary AlInGaN barriers at room and elevated temperatures is reported. The devices outperform conventional GaN/InGaN MQWLEDs, especially at high pump currents. From the measurements of quantum efficiency and total emitted power under dc and pulsed pumping, we show the emission mechanism for quaternary barrier MQWs to be predominantly linked to band-to-band transitions. This is in contrast to localized state emission observed for conventional InGaN/InGaN and GaN/InGaN LEDs. The band-to-band recombination with an increased quantum-well depth improves the high-current performance of the quaternary barrier MQWLEDs, making them attractive for high-power solid-state lighting applications.

Optimum Timing Of Insecticide Applications Against Diamondback Moth Plutella Xylostella In Cole Crops Using Threshold Catches In Sex Pheromone Traps, Gadi Venkata Prasad Reddy, Angel Guerrero

Faculty Publications

Field trials were conducted in cabbage (Brassica oleracea var capitata), cauliflower (B oleracea var botrytis) and knol khol (B oleracea gongylodes) crops at two different locations in Karnataka State (India) to optimize the timing of insecticide applications to control the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, using sex pheromone traps. Our results indicate that applications of cartap hydrochloride as insecticide during a 12-24h period after the pheromone traps had caught on average 8, 12 and 16 males per trap per night in cabbage, cauliflower and knol khol, respectively, were significantly more effective than regular insecticide sprays at 7, 9, 12 or 15 …

Faculty Publications

We report on the influence of the channel doping on dc, high frequency, and noise performance of GaN metal–semiconductor field-effect transistors (MESFETs) grown on sapphire substrates. The devices with the channel thicknesses from 50 to 70 nm and doping levels up to 1.5×1018 cm−3 were investigated. An increase in the channel doping results in the improved dc characteristics, higher cutoff, and maximum oscillation frequencies, and reduced low frequency and microwave noise. The obtained results demonstrate that the dc and microwave performance characteristics of short-channel GaN MESFETs may be comparable to those for conventional AlGaN/GaN heterostructure FETs.

Research Summary 6: Analytical Procedures And Audit Planning Decisions, Steven M. Glover, James Jiambalvo, Jane Kennedy Feb 2001

Research Summary 6: Analytical Procedures And Audit Planning Decisions, Steven M. Glover, James Jiambalvo, Jane Kennedy

Faculty Publications

Auditors perform analytical procedures in planning the nature, timing and extent of testing. Significant fluctuations between the current year’s unaudited data and expected results signal an increased risk of material error and help auditors focus their planned tests on high-risk areas. This study examined auditors’ decisions to revise preliminary audit plans after analytical procedures performed during planning revealed significant, unexpected fluctuations. Specifically we examined whether the extent of corroboration for management’s explanation for the fluctuation and the presence of an explicit incentive for management to misstate the financial statements influenced auditors’ decisions to revise their audit plans.

Assessment Of Contemporary Arctic River Runoff Based On Observational Discharge Records, Richard B. Lammers, Alexander I. Shiklomanov, Charles J. Vorosmarty, Balazs M. Fekete, Bruce J. Peterson

Faculty Publications

We describe the contemporary hydrography of the pan‐Arctic land area draining into the Arctic Ocean, northern Bering Sea, and Hudson Bay on the basis of observational records of river discharge and computed runoff. The Regional Arctic Hydrographic Network data set, R‐ArcticNET, is presented, which is based on 3754 recording stations drawn from Russian, Canadian, European, and U.S. archives. R‐ArcticNET represents the single largest data compendium of observed discharge in the Arctic. Approximately 73% of the nonglaciated area of the pan‐Arctic is monitored by at least one river discharge gage giving a mean gage density of 168 gages per 106 km2. …

Language Acquisition In Children With Autism, Tina Taylor Feb 2001

Language Acquisition In Children With Autism, Tina Taylor

Faculty Publications

By definition, children with autism have deficits in communication. Often, when parents notice that something is "different" about their child, it is that he does not acquire language at the same rate as his peers, that the child uses what language he has in an idiosyncratic fashion (e.g., repeating phrases from videos, using pronouns incorrectly), or that the child appears to understand only that language which might be reinforcing to him (e.g., not responding to "Look at Mommy," but responding to "Do you want a cookie?)" When these "red flags" are apparent, parents should beware of misguided advice such as …

Image Reconstruction And Enhanced Resolution Imaging From Irregular Samples, David G. Long, David S. Early Feb 2001

Image Reconstruction And Enhanced Resolution Imaging From Irregular Samples, David G. Long, David S. Early

Faculty Publications

While high resolution, regularly gridded observations are generally preferred in remote sensing, actual observations are often not evenly sampled and have lower-than-desired resolution. Hence, there is an interest in resolution enhancement and image reconstruction. This paper discusses a general theory and techniques for image reconstruction and creating enhanced resolution images from irregularly sampled data. Using irregular sampling theory, we consider how the frequency content in aperture function-attenuated sidelobes can be recovered from oversampled data using reconstruction techniques, thus taking advantage of the high frequency content of measurements made with nonideal aperture filters. We show that with minor modification, the algebraic …

Variations In Bacterial Community Structure During A Dinoflagellate Bloom Analyzed By Dgge And 16s Rdna Sequencing, Laura B. Fandino, Lasse Riemann, Grieg F. Steward, Richard A. Long, Farooq Azam

Faculty Publications

The relationship between bacterial 16S rRNA gene composition and carbon metabolism was analyzed during an intense dinoflagellate bloom off the Southern California coast during the spring of 1997. Bacterial numbers and rate processes, chlorophyll a, and the dissolved and particulate organic matter pools were measured during the bloom to provide a framework within which to assess bacterial community composition. Free bacteria were numerically dominant, generally comprising >90% of the total, and were responsible for >70% of bacterial production. Attached bacteria had higher cell-specific growth rates than free bacteria (range = 0.5 to 15.1 and 0.7 to 2.5 d-1 …

Simpson, Jane Reiland, Scott R. Burger, Leo T. Furcht, Andrew P. Spicer, Theodore R. Oegema, James B. Mccarthy

Faculty Publications

Bone marrow is the primary site of metastasis in patients with advanced stage prostate cancer. Prostate carcinoma cells metastasizing to bone must initially adhere to endothelial cells in the bone marrow sinusoids. In this report, we have modeled that interaction in vitro using two bone marrow endothelial cell (BMEC) lines and four prostate adenocarcinoma cell lines to investigate the adhesion mechanism. Highly metastatic PC3 and PC3M-LN4 cells were found to adhere rapidly and specifically (70-90%) to BMEC-1 and trHBMEC bone marrow endothelial cells, but not to human umbilical vein endothelial cells (15-25%). Specific adhesion to BMEC-1 and trHBMEC was dependent …

Potential Phase Control Of Chromium Oxide Thin Films Prepared By Laser-Initiated Organometallic Chemical Vapor Deposition, Ruihua Cheng, C. N. Borca, P. A. Dowben, Shane Stadler, Y. U. Idzerda Jan 2001

Potential Phase Control Of Chromium Oxide Thin Films Prepared By Laser-Initiated Organometallic Chemical Vapor Deposition, Ruihua Cheng, C. N. Borca, P. A. Dowben, Shane Stadler, Y. U. Idzerda

Faculty Publications

We have used laser-initiated chemical vapor deposition to grow the chromium oxide thin films through the oxidation of Cr(CO)6 in an oxygen environment. While both Cr2O3 and CrO2 are present in the film, the relative weight of each phase depends on the oxygen partial pressure. The Curie temperature of the film increases and approaches the bulk Tc of CrO2 (397 K) as the partial oxygen pressure is increased. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Field Theories From The Relativistic Law Of Motion, Parampreet Singh, Naresh Dadhich Jan 2001

Field Theories From The Relativistic Law Of Motion, Parampreet Singh, Naresh Dadhich

Faculty Publications

From the relativistic law of motion we attempt to deduce the field theories corresponding to the force law being linear and quadratic in four-velocity of the particle. The linear law leads to the vector gauge theory which could be the Abelian Maxwell electrodynamics or the non-Abelian Yang-Mills theory. On the other hand, the quadratic law demands space-time metric as its potential which is equivalent to demanding the principle of equivalence. It leads to the tensor theory of gravitational field - general relativity. It is remarkable that a purely dynamical property of the force law leads uniquely to the corresponding field …

Semiclassical Application Of The Mo”Ller Operators In Reactive Scattering, Sophya Garashchuk, John C. Light Jan 2001

Semiclassical Application Of The Mo”Ller Operators In Reactive Scattering, Sophya Garashchuk, John C. Light

Faculty Publications

Mo\ller operators in the formulation of reaction probabilities in terms of wave packet correlation functions allow us to define the wave packets in the interaction region rather than in the asymptotic region of the potential surface. We combine Mo\ller operators with the semiclassical propagator of Herman and Kluk. This does not involve further approximations and can be used with any initial value representation (IVR) semiclassical propagator. Time propagation in asymptotic regions of the potential due to Mo\ller operators reduces the oscillations of the propagator integrand and improves convergence of the results with respect to the number of trajectories. The effectiveness …

An Ellam Scheme For Multidimensional Advection-Reaction Equations And Its Optimal-Order Error Estimate, Hong Wang, Xiquan Shi, Richard E. Ewing Jan 2001

An Ellam Scheme For Multidimensional Advection-Reaction Equations And Its Optimal-Order Error Estimate, Hong Wang, Xiquan Shi, Richard E. Ewing

Faculty Publications

We present an Eulerian-Lagrangian localized adjoint method (ELLAM) scheme for initial-boundary value problems for advection-reaction partial differential equations in multiple space dimensions. The derived numerical scheme is not subject to the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy condition and generates accurate numerical solutions even if large time steps are used. Moreover, the scheme naturally incorporates boundary conditions into its formulation without any artificial outflow boundary conditions needed, and it conserves mass. An optimal-order error estimate is proved for the scheme. Numerical experiments are performed to verify the theoretical estimate.

Lexical Failure And Gesture In Second Language Development, Gale Stam Jan 2001

Lexical Failure And Gesture In Second Language Development, Gale Stam

Faculty Publications

Second language acquisition can be defined as the acquisition of another language after the age of three or four (Klein, 1986). It involves the learning and mastery of the morphology, syntax, phonology, and lexicon of the new language. The process by which learners acquire a second language is complex, gradual, nonlinear, and dynamic (Larsen- Freeman, 1991). Depending on their stage of second language development, learners may have difficulty retrieving words, or they may not know words at all and exhibit lexical failure.

Butterworth and Hadar (1989, 1997) have proposed that iconic gestures arise when speakers have a lexical retrieval problem …

Size Of The Military Sector And Economic Growth: A Panel Data Analysis Of Africa And Latin America, Michael D. Stroup, Jac C. Heckelman

Faculty Publications

We estimate the influence of defense spending and military labor use on economic growth in African and Latin American countries. Our model integrates disparate implications from the defense economics literature into a Barro-style model of economic growth that controls for political and economic institutional variation across countries. Our panel data analysis of 44 countries in Africa and Latin America from 1975 to 1989 also controls for cross-country variation in lost human capital and public sector production inefficiencies. We find empirical evidence that the defense burden on economic growth is non-linear, with low levels of military spending increasing economic growth but …

Forval-Online: A Web-Based Forestry Investment Tool, Clay B. Landrum, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Over the past decade, timber values have risen considerably, and society is beginning to see timberland for what it is – a valuable capital asset that must be managed properly. Timberlands, however, cannot be subject to an “across the board” management regime. Different sites possess different productive constraints, and the same holds true for landowners and their management goals. Considering the diversity of managers’ and landowners’ analysis needs, the ability to obtain a customized forestry investment analysis is invaluable. “FORVAL-online: A Web-based Forestry Investment Tool” is a project to develop and make widely available an accurate and easy to use …

Entrance Capacity Of An Automated Highway System, Randolph W. Hall, Ali Nowroozi, Jacob Tsao Jan 2001

Entrance Capacity Of An Automated Highway System, Randolph W. Hall, Ali Nowroozi, Jacob Tsao

Faculty Publications

This paper evaluates the entrance capacity and queueing delay for Automated Highway Systems through use of simulations and analytical modeling. Queueing statistics are also used to determine the sustainable capacity of alternative concepts, taking trip length distribution and spacing between ramps into consideration. Based on safety-spacing headways (produced in a separate analysis), the most promising concept utilizes platoons both on the highway and on on-ramps. However, it is unclear whether comparable capacity can be achieved on exit, when vehicles must be decoupled from their platoons, and whether it is safe for vehicles to enter the highway in closely spaced platoons. …
