Molecular Simulations Of Sound Wave Propagation In Simple Gases, Alejandro Garcia, N. Hadjiconstantinou Jan 2001

Molecular Simulations Of Sound Wave Propagation In Simple Gases, Alejandro Garcia, N. Hadjiconstantinou

Faculty Publications

Molecular simulations of sound waves propagating in a dilute hard sphere gas have been performed using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. A wide range of frequencies is investigated, including very high frequencies for which the period is much shorter than the mean collision time. The simulation results are compared to experimental data and approximate solutions of the Boltzmann equation. It is shown that free molecular flow is important at distances smaller than one mean free path from the excitation point.

Life Projects (Chapter 5 Of The Book Between Gay And Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation), Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

“Life Projects” is Chapter 5 of the book Between Gay and Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation (AltaMira Press, 2001). The timeframe spans from the fall of 1996 to January 1997. I’m taking a course on life history, and I ask a member of my research community, Gordon Bernstein, to participate in my project. During our interviews, Gordon teaches me about the ongoing process of coming out—to oneself, to other gay men, and to coworkers, friends, and family. Later, I grapple with elements of this network of gay male friends that can be unsettling, especially for women. I bemoan its …

Defending Life: Epilogue To Between Gay And Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation [Book], Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

In the epilogue, “Defending Life,” the project comes full circle. The setting is the oral defense of my PhD dissertation. About a dozen of the men I befriended and wrote about—most of whom have read the document—are in attendance. My academic and research communities offer personal and scholarly responses to my work. We talk through the disbelief and pain surrounding Matthew Shepard’s death just four days before, and we try to direct ourselves toward a future of greater harmony and justice.

Process Considerations In The Age Of Markman And Mantras, Craig Allen Nard Jan 2001

Process Considerations In The Age Of Markman And Mantras, Craig Allen Nard

Faculty Publications

This article asserts that although notions of uniformity and certainty have always been part of patent law parlance, since the Federal Circuit's decision in Markman v. Westview Instruments, Inc., these noble ends have achieved mantra status. In Markman, the Federal Circuit, in the name of uniformity and certainty, characterized claim interpretation as a question of law subject to de novo review, thus positioning itself as the arbiter of claim meaning. If the Federal Circuit is unwilling to exercise greater obeisance toward district court claim interpretations, this article argues that to achieve uniformity and certainty in the context of de novo …

On Interference Cancellation And Iterative Techniques, Ryuji Kohno, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza Jan 2001

On Interference Cancellation And Iterative Techniques, Ryuji Kohno, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza

Faculty Publications

Recent research activities in the area of mobile radio communications have moved to third generation (3G) cellular systems to achieve higher quality with variable transmission rate of multimedia information. In this paper, an overview is presented of various interference cancellation and iterative detection techniques that are believed to be suitable for 3G wireless communications systems. Key concepts are space-time processing and space-division multiple access (or SDMA) techniques. SDMA techniques are possible with software antennas. Furthermore, to reduce receiver implementation complexity, iterative detection techniques are considered. A particularly attractive method uses tentative hard decisions, made on the received positions with the …

New Anti-Merger Theories: A Critique, Edward J. Lopez Jan 2001

New Anti-Merger Theories: A Critique, Edward J. Lopez

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate these new anti-merger instruments on the basis of economic theory and evidence. I first discuss how the economics of antitrust has developed over the years, with the intention of characterizing the intellectual inheritance of 1990s' antitrust regulators. Within this context, I then discuss each anti-merger instrument, how it has been applied in specific cases, and how it accords with underlying economic science. On the basis of these arguments, antitrust regulators should pause and reconsider the theoretical and empirical bases of applying unilateral effects and innovation markets to merger investigations.

Negotiating Academic And Personal Selves (Chapter 4 Of The Book Between Gay And Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation), Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

“Negotiating Academic and Personal Selves” is Chapter 4 of the book Between Gay and Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation (AltaMira Press, 2001). Here I show how my relationships with the gay men of my research community alter how I position myself in graduate courses, how I practice research, how I write, and how I teach my classes. As a student, I delve into new projects on sexual orientation and identity; as an instructor, I alter course reading lists, assignments, and activities. This chapter also moves through my increasingly problematic encounters with associates who identify as heterosexual. My new consciousness …

The Ethics Of Taxation, Fred Foldvary Jan 2001

The Ethics Of Taxation, Fred Foldvary

Faculty Publications

The judgment of taxation by ethical standards requires a universally applicable ethic. Such an ethic, natural moral law, can be derived using the Lockean framework based on equality. By this universal ethic, persons have property rights in their bodies and lives, and thus in their labor. The taxation of wages and of products of labor are therefore morally wrong. The equality premise, combined with the Lockean proviso on land, leads to the conclusion that public revenues may be justly obtained from the rental benefit of natural resources. Voluntary user fees and invasion penalties such as pollution charges are also morally …

A Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Group With Two Simultaneous Nest Trees, Richard N. Conner, James R. Mccormick, Richard R. Schaefer, Daniel Saenz, D. Craig Rudolph

Faculty Publications

During a study of Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Picoides borealis) nesting in eastern Texas, we discovered a single breeding pair of woodpeckers with two simultaneous nests in nest trees that were 24 m apart. Incubation of eggs in each nest tree was at least 13 d and may have been as long as 16 d. The breeding male incubated and fed a nestling in one nest tree, and the breeding female incubated and fed a nestling in the other nest tree until the nestlings were >24 d old. Prior to fledging, both the breeding male and female were observed feeding …

An Unusually Large Number Of Eggs Laid By A Breeding Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Female, Richard N. Conner, Daniel Saenz, James R. Mccormick

Faculty Publications

The Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Picoides borealis) is a cooperatively breeding species that typically uses a single cavity for nesting (Ligon 1970, Walters et al. 1988). A single tree, or aggregation of cavity trees, termed the cluster, is inhabited by a group of woodpeckers that includes a single breeding pair and up to several helpers, which are typically male offspring of previous breeding seasons (Ligon 1970, Lennartz et al. 1987). Each group of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers usually produces one nest per breeding season, but will often nest again during the same breeding season if the first nest fails. Double clutching and …

Delayed Reproduction Of Translocated Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers., Brent Burt, James R. Mccormick, Richard N. Conner, Daniel Saenz

Faculty Publications

Twelve pairs of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers were translocated to the Angelina National Forest. Five breeding pairs produced eggs/nestlings within the first breeding season after translocation. Clutch initiation dates for all five pairs were later than those of resident breeders. The observed delay in reporductive timing by translocated woodpeckers may have resulted from a variety of factors.

An Alternative Use For Bagasse: Stabilizing Agent For Lead Waste, Michael A. Janusa Jan 2001

An Alternative Use For Bagasse: Stabilizing Agent For Lead Waste, Michael A. Janusa

Faculty Publications

Bagasse amounts to one- third of the cane ground and supplies fuel for the generation of steam in raw factories; however, most factories have an excess of bagasse during regular grinding season. Another method for the utilization of bagasse was investigated using bagasse as a stabilizing agent for heavy metal waste solidified /stabilized in cement. Lead nitrate was used as the model heavy me ta l waste with a 10 or 15 per cent lead by weight to cement loading. Samples were cured for 7, 14, and 28 days at 24°C. Samples containing bagasse typically resulted in TCLP extract lead …

Privatizing Social Security, Jerry W. Markham Jan 2001

Privatizing Social Security, Jerry W. Markham

Faculty Publications

The 2000 presidential election focused attention on an idea that has been surfacing for some time--the privatization of Social Security. Although opposition remains fierce, proposals for privatization have been gradually gaining acceptance as the inadequacy of benefits from the present system become more apparent, and bankruptcy becomes certain in the absence of additional onerous funding. Resistance to privatization largely centers on concerns that existing participants will lose their contributions and that private accounts may result in investment losses, which would leave future pensioners penniless. The disability and survivor benefits of the present Social Security system also raise concerns for the …

A Two-Stage Decoder For Pragmatic Trellis-Coded M-Psk Modulation Using A Symbol Transformation, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Advait Mogre Jan 2001

A Two-Stage Decoder For Pragmatic Trellis-Coded M-Psk Modulation Using A Symbol Transformation, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Advait Mogre

Faculty Publications

A two-stage decoding procedure for pragmatic trellis-coded modulation (TCM) is introduced. It applies a transformation from the received I-channel and Q-channel samples onto points in a two-dimensional (2-D) signal space that contains a coset constellation. For pragmatic TCM over M-PSK signal sets with ν coded bits per symbol, ν=1, 2, the signal points in the coset constellations represent cosets of a B/QPSK signal subset-associated with the coded bits-in the original M-PSK signal constellation. A conventional Viterbi decoder operates on the transformed symbols to estimate the coded bits. After reencoding these bits, the uncoded bits are estimated in a second stage, …

A Method Of Non-Data-Aided Carrier Recovery With Modulation Identification, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Kenta Umebayashi, Ryuji Kohno Jan 2001

A Method Of Non-Data-Aided Carrier Recovery With Modulation Identification, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Kenta Umebayashi, Ryuji Kohno

Faculty Publications

A non-data aided carrier recovery technique using modulation format identification is proposed. This technique can also be interpreted as a modulation identification method that is robust against static phase and frequency offsets. The performance of the proposed technique is studied and analytical expressions derived for the mean acquisition time to detect lock in the cases of M-PSK, M=2,4,8, and 16-QAM modulation, with respect to frequency offset and signal-to-noise ratio. The results are verified with Monte Carlo simulations. The main advantage of the proposed method lies in its simpler implementation and faster lock detection, when compared to conventional methods.

Impact Of The Texas Leaf-Cutting Ant (Atta Texana (Buckley) (Order Hymenoptera, Family Formicidae) On A Forested Landscape, David Kulhavy, L. A. Smith, W. G. Ross

Faculty Publications

Atta texana (Buckley), the Texas leaf-cutting ant, rapidly expanded in a harvested forested landscape on sandhills characterized by droughty soils, causing mortality of planted loblolly pine (Pinus taeda (L.)). The site, composed primarily of Quartzipsamments soils classified as thermic coated Typic Quartzipsamments in the Tonkawa soil series, accounts for approximately 5,000 ha in Nacogdoches, Rusk, Panola, and San Augustine Counties in eastern Texas, USA (Dolezel 1980). These soils are characterized by low fertility, rapid permeability, and extreme acid reaction. These sandhills are resistant to erosion and are considered important ground water recharge areas. The distribution of A. texana central …
