Relationships Among The Non-Byzantine Manuscripts Of 2 Peter, Terry Dwain Robertson
Relationships Among The Non-Byzantine Manuscripts Of 2 Peter, Terry Dwain Robertson
Faculty Publications
One of the ongoing discussions in NT text-critical studies involves the methodology for classifying manuscripts into families and text-types.' This study focuses on the text of 2 Peter, following a three-step method. First, all the manuscripts in the study were compared and tentatively grouped through hierarchical cluster analysis. Next, based on these tentative groupings, profiles of non-majority text readings were created. Then, working with and refining these profiles, the groupings were finalized. A short profile of test readings is also provided for each group to aid in the quick identification of other manuscripts. With the groupings in hand, the next …

The mineral carbonation, a process of converting CO2 into stable minerals (mineralization), has been studied extensively to capture and store CO2. However, most of the mineral carbonation studies have been largely investigated at lab scale. Preliminary and pilot scale studies for accelerated mineral carbonation (AMC) were conducted at one of the largest coal-fired power plants (2120 MW) in the USA by reacting flue gas with fly ash particles in a fluidized bed reactor. In the preliminary experiments, flue gas CO2 and SO2 concentrations decreased from 13.0 to 9.6% and from 107.8 to 15.1 ppmv, respectively during the first 2 min. …

(Excerpt)
The first published case to deal with the new collusion standard in revised Article 8 has been decided by Judge Bransten in Supreme Court, New York County. As New York City is the center of the securities industry, it is not surprising that the first published case to deal with collusion was decided here. The result reached by Judge Bransten, however, is surprising in the liberality with which collusion was construed.

We report the results of 11B nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of SrB6 and Ca0.995La0.005B6 below room temperature. Although the electrical resistivities of these two materials differ substantially, their 11B-NMR responses exhibit some strikingly common features. Both materials exhibit ferromagnetic order, but their 11B-NMR spectra reveal very small hyperfine fields at the boron sites. The spin-lattice relaxation T-11 varies considerably with external field but changes with temperature only below a few K. We discuss these unusual results by considering various different scenarios for the electronic structure of these materials. © 2001 The American Physical Society.
The Field Equation From Newton's Law Of Motion And The Absence Of Magnetic Monopole, Parampreet Singh, Naresh Dadhich
The Field Equation From Newton's Law Of Motion And The Absence Of Magnetic Monopole, Parampreet Singh, Naresh Dadhich

By requiring the linear differential operator in Newton's law of motion to be self adjoint, we obtain the field equation for the linear theory, which is the classical electrodynamics. In the process, we are also led to a fundamental universal chiral relation between electric and magnetic monopoles which implies that the two are related. Thus there could just exist only one kind of charge which is conventionally called electric.

Electrolyte films of samaria-doped ceria (SDC, Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9) are fabricated onto porous NiO-SDC substrates by a screen printing technique. A cathode layer, consisting of Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3 and 10 wt % SDC, is subsequently screen printed on the electrolyte to form a single cell, which is tested at temperatures from 400 to 600°C. When humidified (3% H2O) hydrogen or methane is used as fuel and stationary air as oxidant, the maximum power densities are 188 (or 78) and 397 (or 304) mW/cm2 at 500 and 600°C, respectively. Impedance analysis …

Novel Transactivation Domain In Erythroid Kruppel-Like Factor (Eklf), Kumar Pandya, David Donze, Tim M. Townes
Faculty Publications
Erythroid Kruppel-like Factor (EKLF) is an erythroid-specific transcription factor that plays a critical role in γ- to β-globin gene switching during development. To identify essential domains required for EKLF transactivation function, we cotransfected a human erythroleukemia cell line (K562) with a locus control region γ/Luc-β/Cat reporter and an EKLF expression vector. In this assay EKLF mediates a 500-fold induction of β/CAT expression compared with controls. To map essential transactivation domains, progressive NH2-terminal and internal deletion mutants of EKLF were constructed. All EKLF mutants were expressed at wild-type levels, localized to the nucleus, and bound DNA. When mutant EKLF proteins were …

First-Principles Elastic Constants And Electronic Structure Of Α-Pt2si And Ptsi, Gus L. W. Hart, O. Beckstein, J. E. Klepeis, O. Pankratov
Faculty Publications
We have carried out a first-principles study of the elastic properties and electronic structure for two room-temperature stable Pt silicide phases, tetragonal α-Pt2Si, and orthorhomic PtSi. We have calculated all of the equilibrium structural parameters for both phases; the a and c lattice constants for α-Pt2Si and the a, b, and c lattice constants and four internal structural parameters for PtSi. These results agree closely with experimental data. We have also calculated the zero-pressure elastic constants, confirming prior results for pure Pt and Si and predicting values for the six (nine) independent, nonzero elastic constants of α-Pt2Si (PtSi). These calculations …

Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) is known primarily for its roles in immunological responses but also has been shown to affect fat metabolism and adipocyte gene expression. To further investigate the effects of IFN-γ on fat cells, we examined the effects of this cytokine on the expression of adipocyte transcription factors in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Although IFN-γ regulated the expression of several adipocyte transcription factors, IFN-γ treatment resulted in a rapid reduction of both peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) protein and mRNA. A 48-h exposure to IFN-γ also resulted in a decrease of both CCAAT/enhancer-binding α and sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP-1) expression. The …
Quasirandom Distributed Gaussian Bases For Bound Problems, Sophya Garashchuk, John C. Light
Quasirandom Distributed Gaussian Bases For Bound Problems, Sophya Garashchuk, John C. Light
Faculty Publications
We introduce quasirandom distributed Gaussian bases (QDGB) that are well suited for bound problems. The positions of the basis functions are chosen quasirandomly while their widths and density are functions of the potential. The basis function overlap and kinetic energy matrix elements are analytical. The potential energy matrix elements are accurately evaluated using few-point quadratures, since the Gaussian basis functions are localized. The resulting QDGB can be easily constructed and is shown to be accurate and efficient for eigenvalue calculation for several multidimensional model vibrational problems. As more demanding examples, we used a 2D QDGB-DVR basis to calculate the lowest …

Book Review: Faith In Law: Essays In Legal Theory, S. I. Strong
Faculty Publications
The essays collected in this book arise out of a series of seminars exploring the relationship between law and faith, broadly defined, and investigate "the many varied links between law and faith", particularly as those links relate to legal theory. While the editors intended to demonstrate the diversity of ways in which the topic can be viewed, this very diversity causes some problems for the reader.

Room temperature, continuous-wave bistability was observed in oxide-confined, two-section, 1.3- m quantum-dot (QD) lasers with an integrated intracavity quantum-dot saturable absorber. The origin of the hysteresis and bistability were shown to be due to the nonlinear saturation of the QD absorption and the electroabsorption induced by the quantum confined Stark effect.

A Speech Interface To Genealogical Data, Deryle W. Lonsdale
Faculty Publications
This talk presents an interface that has been developed to enable users to access genealogical information via speech. Whereas the more traditional approaches for accessing data are prevalent in today’s commercial genealogical products (e.g. windows, icons, and point-and-click methods), hands-free access to information is becoming increasingly popular. There would seem to be a potential demand for speech-based access to genealogical information, particularly among enthusiasts who might require mobile access, or those who are uncomfortable with or unable to use manual methods. Yet software to perform this function for genealogical access does not appear to be widely available yet.

As women play an increasingly prominent part in many Cajun Mardi Gras runs, they bring their own styles of roleplaying and masking to the celebration. A handful of creative women have taken the lead in commodifying the rural tradition, making and marketing Mardi Gras suits and masks on a large scale. This article looks at Cajun women's disguises as a way of understanding their larger influence on the festival.

Antitrust And The Information Age: Section 2 Monopolization Analyses In The New Economy, A. Benjamin Spencer
Antitrust And The Information Age: Section 2 Monopolization Analyses In The New Economy, A. Benjamin Spencer

On April 3, 2000, U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson declared that the Microsoft Corporation ("Microsoft") had maintained monopoly power in the personal computer operating system market by anticompetitive means, in violation of Section 2 of the Sherman Antitrust Act. A case of enormous significance, Microsoft raises difficult questions regarding how antitrust laws should be applied to information technology ("IT') companies. Specifically, many characteristics of what has come to be called the "New Economy" - and of the IT companies within it - suggest that traditional monopolization analysis may need modification. As the U.S. has moved toward an information- based …

An Integrated System For Processing Information From Genealogical Text, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Merrill Hutchison, Tim Richards, William Taysom
Faculty Publications
This presentation introduces an integrated software system that has been designed and implemented to allow processing of difficult text. The genealogical text subdomain often exhibits characteristics that do not occur in more general written language. The system we describe has been developed specifically to address the extraction and analysis of information from such specialized text.

Differential cross sections for dijet photoproduction in association with a leading neutron using the reaction e+ + p → e+ + n + jet + jet + Xr have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 6.4 pb-1. The fraction of dijet events with a leading neutron in the final state was studied as a function of the jet kinematic variables. The cross sections were measured for jet transverse energies EjetT > 6 GeV, neutron energy En > 400 GeV, and neutron production angle θn < 0.8 mrad. The data are broadly consistent with factorization of the lepton and hadron vertices and with a simple one-pion-exchange model. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Recently, Rips produced an example of a double of two free groups which has unsolvable generalized word problem. In this paper, we show that Rips's example fits into a large class of doubles of groups, each member of which contains F2×F2 and therefore has unsolvable generalized word problem and is incoherent. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

The cross sections for the ν-d and ν̅ -d reactions are calculated for incident energy up to Eν=170 MeV with the use of a phenomenological Lagrangian approach. We assess and improve the reliability of the employed calculational method by examining the dependence of the results on various input and approximations that go into the calculation. The main points of improvement over the existing work are (1) use of the “modern” NN potentials, (2) use of the more accurate nucleon weak-interaction form factors, and (3) monitoring the strength of a vertex that governs the exchange-current contribution, with the use …

We describe the discovery circumstances and photometric properties of 2000 EB173, now one of the brightest trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) with opposition magnitude mR = 18.9 and also one of the largest Plutinos, found with the drift-scanning camera of the Quasar Equatorial Survey Team, attached to the 1 m Schmidt telescope of the National Observatory of Venezuela. We measure B-V = 0.99 ± 0.14 and V-R = 0.57 ± 0.05, a red color observed for many fainter TNOs. At our magnitude limit mK = 20.1 ± 0.20, our single detection reveals a sky density of 0.015+0.034-0.012 TNOs per square degree (the …
