Comparing The Strength Of The Confidence-Accuracy Versus Response Time-Accuracy Relationship For Eyewitness Identification, Curt A. Carlson, Robert F. Lockamyeir, Maria A. Carlson, Charles A. Goodsell

Faculty Publications

Research indicates that eyewitness identification (ID) accuracy increases with faster IDs and those supported with immediate high confidence, but it is not clear which measure, confidence or response time, is the better reflector of accuracy. It is also important to know how well these patterns hold up across important factors affecting eyewitness ID accuracy such as memory strength for the perpetrator’s face. We conducted four pre-registered experiments to investigate these issues across different levels of target memory strength (via encoding time or image quality) and ID procedure (showups vs. lineups of different filler quality). Correct IDs were faster than false …

Robotics In Early Childhood Stem Education (Rec-Stemed): The Impact On Preservice Teachers’ Attitudes And Intentions Toward Computational Thinking, Lucus Vasconcelos Ph.D., Ismahan Arslan-Ari, Bridget Miller, Renato Gonzalez-Tapia Mar 2025

Robotics In Early Childhood Stem Education (Rec-Stemed): The Impact On Preservice Teachers’ Attitudes And Intentions Toward Computational Thinking, Lucus Vasconcelos Ph.D., Ismahan Arslan-Ari, Bridget Miller, Renato Gonzalez-Tapia

Faculty Publications

There is a large disconnect between the increasing need for computer science education in K-12 schools and the preservice teacher training provided. Consequently, preservice teachers may graduate feeling unprepared to infuse computer science concepts such as computational thinking (CT) into their teaching. To address this, we created Robotics in Early Childhood STEM Education (REC-STEMEd), a module that infuses computational thinking, robotics, and science content into an early childhood teacher education methods course. This study investigated changes in early childhood preservice teachers’ (n = 39) attitudes toward learning to teach CT and their intentions to teach CT. Findings revealed a statistically …

The Total Solar Eclipse Of 1869 As Stimulus For Adoption Of Physical-Astronomy Techniques In The United States, Jennifer Lynn Bartlett, Thomas Hockey Mar 2025

The Total Solar Eclipse Of 1869 As Stimulus For Adoption Of Physical-Astronomy Techniques In The United States, Jennifer Lynn Bartlett, Thomas Hockey

Faculty Publications

In the United States, techniques that would one day be called astrophysical were applied later than elsewhere and comparatively suddenly. Their entry into US main-stream astronomy was motivated by a quasi-stochastic phenomenon: a total eclipse of the Sun visible between the contiguous borders of that country. In reaction to the upcoming event, the US Nautical Almanac Office in particular invested time, workforce, and a great deal of money into the measurements of physical astronomy, especially spectroscopy. This occurred although none of its employees had ever expressed—at least, in writing—expertise or even interest in the subject beforehand. Once adopted, physical astronomy, …

Quality Of Life In Caregivers Of Toddlers With Autism Features, Sarah Edmunds, Daina M. Tagavi, Collen M. Harker, Trent Deschamps, Wendy L. Stone

Faculty Publications

Understanding factors that contribute to the quality of life (QoL) of primary caregivers of young autistic children can help researchers and clinicians provide high-quality support to caregivers and families. This study examined whether family demographic factors, parenting stress, and caregivers’ perceptions of family-centered healthcare experiences uniquely predict caregivers’ QoL. Participants were caregivers of toddlers with: features of autism (n = 119), other developmental delays (n = 101), and no developmental concerns (n = 264). We hypothesized that higher levels of perceived family-centered care would moderate (ameliorate) the relation between parenting stress and QoL. Higher levels of perceived family-centered …

Illustrations Of Benevolent And Hostile Heterosexism In Lgbtq+ People’S Lives, Jes L. Matsick, Lindsay Palmer, Flora Oswald, Mary Kruk, Kenneth Ye

Faculty Publications

In this study, we aimed to define heterosexism—a form of sexual stigma that accounts for interpersonal attitudes and institutionalized ideology—in a multi-dimensional way, centering on LGBTQ+ people’s experiences. We draw from an ambivalent theory of prejudice and focus on heterosexism, or an ideology that stigmatizes nonheterosexual behaviors, identities, relationships, and communities. We aimed to learn how LGBTQ+ people would narrate their experiences of heterosexism within a benevolent and hostile framing. In a qualitative online study, LGBTQ+ participants (N = 77; 49% White) reviewed definitions of and recalled encounters with benevolent and hostile heterosexism, providing examples of how heterosexism manifests …

Meeting the relentless demand for more efficient air cargo transportation is of paramount importance for commercial needs and military missions. This study describes an experiment to test an innovative approach that harnesses cutting-edge stereoscopic vision technology to create 3D point clouds of rolling stock cargo across varying solar angles and cloud shadow conditions. Virtual cargo point clouds are generated by calibrating and systematically organizing the depth and location points from an RGB-D camera and then reprojecting them in a virtual environment. Measurement accuracy was rigorously tested across six camera positions in various combinations of weather conditions against physical ground truth …

Adapting To Ai: The Evolving Role Of Faculty In Higher Education, Ronald R. Danault Mar 2025

Adapting To Ai: The Evolving Role Of Faculty In Higher Education, Ronald R. Danault

Faculty Publications

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the face of higher education, and there are important issues regarding the future of the faculty (Stoerger, 2024). Although there are concerns about the impact of AI on the conventional faculty roles in teaching, assessment, and administration, these tools are now being adopted in learning processes. Rather than dismissing AI as a threat, it acts as a catalyst for reshaping the way faculty members teach with the help of AI and, hence, become facilitators of the learning process (Haoyang & Towne, 2025).

This paper aims to discuss the integration of AI in the higher education …

New Method Of Impact Localization On Plate-Like Structures Using Deep Learning And Wavelet Transform, Asaad Migot, Ahmed Saaudi, Victor Giurgiutiu

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a new methodology for localizing impact events on plate-like structures using a proposed two-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) and received impact signals. A network of four piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) was installed on the tested plate to acquire impact signals. These signals consisted of reflection waves that provided valuable information about impact events. In this methodology, each of the received signals was divided into several equal segments. Then, a wavelet transform (WT)-based time-frequency analysis was used for processing each segment signal. The generated WT diagrams of these segments’ signals were cropped and resized using MATLAB code …

Special Delivery Of Proteinaceous Matter To Deep-Sea Microbes, Yuan Shen, Ronald Benner, Taylor A.B. Broek, Brett D. Walker, Matthew D. Mccarthy

Faculty Publications

Earth’s deep ocean holds a vast reservoir of dissolved organic carbon, traditionally considered old and resistant to microbial degradation. Radiocarbon analyses indicate the hidden occurrence of younger dissolved organic carbon components, assumed to be accessible to deep-sea microorganisms but not yet demonstrated. Using compound-class radiocarbon analysis, molecular characterization, and bioassay experiments, we provide direct evidence for rapid microbial utilization of young, labile, high–molecular weight proteinaceous material in bathypelagic waters. The abundance of labile proteinaceous material diminishes from epipelagic to mesopelagic waters but notably increases in bathypelagic waters, where it exhibits a short turnover time (days) and resembles surface plankton in …

No Evidence Of Fisheries-Induced Evolution Observed From Bluegill Populations In Small Kansas Impoundments, Morganne C. Borsh, Ben C. Neely, Peter B. Berendzen Mar 2025

No Evidence Of Fisheries-Induced Evolution Observed From Bluegill Populations In Small Kansas Impoundments, Morganne C. Borsh, Ben C. Neely, Peter B. Berendzen

Faculty Publications

Objective: Bluegill Lepomis macrochirus support recreational fisheries throughout much of their geographic distribution. One characteristic of the species is for males to exhibit alternative reproductive tactics to maximize production of progeny. These divergent strategies coupled with size-selective harvest by anglers create the potential for fisheries-induced evolution (FIE). As such, we sought to characterize genetic diversity of five fished and five unfished Bluegill populations to test for the occurrence of FIE. Methods: Fin clips from 100 Bluegill across 10 populations in southeast Kansas were collected to examine genetic diversity and test for the occurrence of FIE associated with long-term selective harvest. …

Are Populist Leaders Playing The Public? Examining The Effect Of Populism On Common And Luxury Good Imports, Brian Warby, Nicholas Bailey Mar 2025

Are Populist Leaders Playing The Public? Examining The Effect Of Populism On Common And Luxury Good Imports, Brian Warby, Nicholas Bailey

Faculty Publications

Populist movements have grown significantly around the world in recent years. Populist ideologies typically view social and political elites as the enemy of the people; however, populist leaders are themselves part of the elite class, and are politically and financially dependent on other elites to some degree. We use principal-agent theory to examine whether populist leaders act as constrained agents by faithfully representing the people’s interests, or whether they actually pursue elite interests. We use panel data on more than 170 countries from 1993 to 2019 to look at total imports and imports of luxury goods under populist regimes to …

Electronic And Magnetic Properties Of Nearly Spin-Gapless Semiconducting Fevtaal And Fecrzral, Caden Sadler, Samuel Smith, Nhat Phat Nguyen, Brandon Schmidt, Parashu Kharel, Paul M. Shand, Pavel V. Lukashev Mar 2025

Electronic And Magnetic Properties Of Nearly Spin-Gapless Semiconducting Fevtaal And Fecrzral, Caden Sadler, Samuel Smith, Nhat Phat Nguyen, Brandon Schmidt, Parashu Kharel, Paul M. Shand, Pavel V. Lukashev

Faculty Publications

Here, we present results of a computational study of electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of FeVTaAl and FeCrZrAl, quaternary Heusler alloys that have been recently reported to exhibit spin-gapless semiconducting behavior. Our calculations indicate that these materials may crystallize in regular Heusler cubic structure, which has a significantly lower energy than the inverted Heusler cubic phase. Both FeVTaAl and FeCrZrAl exhibit ferromagnetic alignment, with an integer magnetic moment per unit cell at equilibrium lattice constant. Band structure analysis reveals that while both FeVTaAl and FeCrZrAl indeed exhibit nearly spin-gapless semiconducting electronic structure at their optimal lattice parameters, FeVTaAl is a …

Beyond Blinders And Boomerangs: Assessing State Business Taxation, David Gamage Mar 2025

Beyond Blinders And Boomerangs: Assessing State Business Taxation, David Gamage

Faculty Publications

Karl A. Frieden’s article, “Wearing Blinders in the Debate Over Business’s ‘Fair Share’ of State Taxes” and his subsequent article, “The Boomerang Effect of the Business ‘Fair Share’ Tax Debate,” jointly contend that progressive calls to strengthen state corporate income taxes (CITs) are misguided because businesses allegedly overpay certain other state and local taxes. This essay argues that, while Frieden does raise some valid points about the efficiency of specific tax design choices, his core argument fundamentally misconstrues the central issues: the ultimate incidence of business taxes, the pursuit of equity and efficiency, and the importance of combating harmful tax …

Faculty Publications

High-resolution angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of the triple-layered ruthenate Sr4Ru3O10 reveals features of the electronic structure that extend our understanding of the layered strontium ruthenates. The spectra near the Fermi energy are very different from the nonmagnetic analogues Sr2RuO4 and Sr3Ru2O7 with distinct Fermi surfaces for wide electronlike minority spin bands around the zone center and narrow holelike majority spin Fermi surface contours around the zone corners. The most dramatic results are two narrow spectral peaks ∼30 meV below the Fermi level, a spin-minority holelike band at the Brillouin zone center, and a spin-majority saddle-band van Hove singularity …

Neurosymbolic Knowledge-Grounded Planning And Reasoning In Ai Systems, Amit Sheth, Vedant Khandelwal, Kaushik Roy, Vishal Pallagani, Megha Chakraborty

Faculty Publications

To build AI systems capable of decision-support assistance, such as AI-assisted healthcare, it is essential to develop user-centric decision-making processes that are robust, interpretable, and capable of effectively processing and acting on natural language interactions. Instruction-based prompting of large language models has demonstrated considerable success in supporting humans with information assistance tasks, including creative writing and content generation. However, recent studies reveal that language models exhibit limitations in performing complex reasoning and planning tasks, such as constructing compositional or hierarchical plans involving multiple reasoning steps. To address these challenges, we propose a neurosymbolic framework that integrates large language models with …

Borer, Pedro M. Tognetti, Peter B. Adler, Lori Biederman, Miguel N. Bugalho, Maria C. Caldeira, Juan P. Cancela, Kenneth J. Elgersma

Faculty Publications

Forbs (“wildflowers”) are important contributors to grassland biodiversity but are vulnerable to environmental changes. In a factorial experiment at 94 sites on 6 continents, we test the global generality of several broad predictions: (1) Forb cover and richness decline under nutrient enrichment, particularly nitrogen enrichment. (2) Forb cover and richness increase under herbivory by large mammals. (3) Forb richness and cover are less affected by nutrient enrichment and herbivory in more arid climates, because water limitation reduces the impacts of competition with grasses. (4) Forb families will respond differently to nutrient enrichment and mammalian herbivory due to differences in nutrient …

Recent helicity-resolved magneto-Raman spectroscopy measurement demonstrates large effective phonon magnetic moments of ∼2.5 μB in monolayer MoS2, highlighting resonant excitation of bright excitons as a feasible route to activate Γ-point circularly polarized phonons in transition metal dichalcogenides. However, a microscopic picture of this intriguing phenomenon remains lacking. In this work, we show that an orbital transition between the split conduction bands (Δ0 = 4 meV) of MoS2 couples to the doubly degenerate E″ phonon mode (Ω0 = 33 meV), forming two hybridized states. Our phononic and electronic Raman scattering measurements capture these two states: (i) one with predominantly phonon contribution …

Commodity Thermoplastic Elastomer-Enabled Templated Synthesis Of Large-Pore Ordered Mesoporous Materials, Anthony Griffin, Parker Frame, Yizhi Xiang, Zhe Qiang

Faculty Publications

Fabrication of ordered mesoporous materials (OMMs) has predominantly relied on templating-based methods. However, these methods are constrained by several limitations, especially the limited pore sizes attainable with commercially available surfactants used as structure-directing agents. To unlock the full potential of the OMMs, it is essential to develop synthetic strategies that facilitate the production of large-pore OMMs using scalable processes and cost-effective precursors. This work demonstrates the use of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE)-derived carbon replicas for synthesizing ordered mesoporous silica (OMS) and metal oxides (OMMOs) via precursor infiltration and template removal. The nanostructural evolution of the resulting inorganic materials was systematically investigated. …
