Toward A Unified Conceptualization Of Social Capital, Paulina Erices-Ocampo, Miranda J. Lubbers, Jimi Adams
Toward A Unified Conceptualization Of Social Capital, Paulina Erices-Ocampo, Miranda J. Lubbers, Jimi Adams
Faculty Publications
Social capital is among the most broadly used concepts in social science. Despite its shared understanding as beneficial resources available from the connections between people, authors vary widely in their conceptualizations of social capital. To extract clarity from these disparate perspectives, we offer a systematic framework for conceptualizing social capital, which identifies three primary theoretical dimensions of scholars’ conceptualizations of social capital: (a) where beneficial resources reside, ranging from within individuals to the relationships between individuals; (b) beneficial network structure, differentiating closure from brokerage arrangements; and (c) the level to which rewards accrue, distinguishing individual from collective benefits. We illustrate …

Enzyme commission (EC) numbers play a vital role in classifying enzymes and understanding their functions in enzyme-related research. Although accurate and informative encoding of EC numbers is essential for enhancing the effectiveness of machine learning applications, simple EC encoding approaches suffer from limitations such as false numerical order and high sparsity. To address these issues, we developed EC2Vec, a multimodal autoencoder that preserves the categorical nature of EC numbers and leverages their hierarchical relationships, resulting in more meaningful and informative representations. EC2Vec encodes each digit of the EC number as a categorical token and then processes these embeddings through a …

Time-Series Forecasting (TSF) is a growing research area across various domains including manufacturing. Manufacturing can benefit from Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) innovations for TSF tasks. Although numerous TSF algorithms have been developed and proposed over the past decades, the critical validation and experimental evaluation of the algorithms hold substantial value for researchers and practitioners and are missing to date. This study aims to fill this research gap by providing a rigorous experimental evaluation of the state-of-the-art TSF algorithms on thirteen manufacturing-related datasets with a focus on their applicability in smart manufacturing environments. Each algorithm was selected based …
The Southern Miss Bower Academic Center: A Recent Academic Library-Athletics Partnership, Blake Denton
The Southern Miss Bower Academic Center: A Recent Academic Library-Athletics Partnership, Blake Denton
Faculty Publications
In 2019, A. Blake Denton published a literature review that identified and described 35 partnerships between academic libraries and athletics programs at higher education institutions in the United States, 20 of which were established for library marketing and development purposes. Recognizing that the literature documenting marketing and development partnerships was dated, he published a study in 2021 that provided updated, more comprehensive accounts for eight participating institutions and an analysis of the evolving nature of their relationships over time. This third article analyzes the partnership at the University of Southern Mississippi that resulted in the relocation of the athletics program’s …

Coastal forests are highly vulnerable to disturbances from tropical cyclones (TCs), yet the long-term impacts of storm surges on tree growth remain understudied. This study examines the relationship between TC-induced storm surges and annual tree-ring growth in Pinus elliottii at three coastal sites along the northern Gulf of Mexico. Using dendrochronological methods, we analyzed total ring width, earlywood, and latewood growth patterns to assess suppressions in response to past TC activity. Our results indicate that storm surge events consistently cause growth suppression, with recovery periods averaging two to three years. However, suppression patterns vary by site, with trees in more …

Objective
To determine the effects of zwitterionic hydrogel films on mucus contact angles, flow, and stasis with respect to medical polymer surfaces, both flat and tubular.
Methods
A zwitterionic hydrogel thin film was photografted onto medical rubber surfaces and compared against non-zwitterionic hydrogel thin films and untreated surfaces to determine its impact on mucus contact angles, mucus flow on sheets and tubes, and mucus plugging.
Results
Zwitterionic and conventional hydrogel films significantly reduce the mucus contact angles and the tilt required to initiate mucus flow on sheets and in tubular systems. Preliminary experiments show that these films may also shorten …
Time-Dependent Shear Flows And Their Applications In Parabolic–Parabolic Patlak–Keller–Segel Systems*, Siming He
Faculty Publications
In this study, we investigate the behavior of three-dimensional parabolic–parabolic Patlak–Keller–Segel systems in the presence of ambient shear flows. Our findings demonstrate that when the total mass of the cell density is below a specific threshold, the solution remains globally regular as long as the flow is sufficiently strong. The primary difficulty in our analysis stems from the fast creation of chemical gradients due to strong shear advection.

Antibiotic resistance presents an emerging challenge to global health by reducing the efficacy of antibiotics administered to treat bacterial infections. Traditional approaches for detecting antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) involve alignment-based sequence similarity techniques, which are time-consuming and resource-intensive. This signifies the necessity for developing advanced computational methods to detect ARGs early. To address this challenge, we introduce Trans-ARG, a novel multi-head attention transformer-based model designed to predict potential ARGs. Our approach leverages the pretrained ESMFold model to extract embeddings from protein sequences, capturing intricate structural and functional information. Protein sequences labelled as ARG or non-ARG were used as the dataset. …

Drug target affinity (DTA) prediction is essential at different phases of drug discovery and virtual drug screening. However, traditional wet lab experiments are time and resource-intensive owing to the complex interactions within the vast biological and chemical spaces. Computational methods have proven their potential to predict DTA, but none have considered the association of drugs and proteins to capture the complex interactions in the biological network between drugs and proteins. To address this, we propose a novel framework leveraging knowledge graph-based meta-path learning (KG-DTA) to enhance DTA prediction. First, we construct a weighted heterogeneous network of drugs and proteins that …

Titanium and its alloys are used in aviation and automobile industries due to their remarkable strength to weight ratio, but machining loss commonly is high with ~ 80 wt% of the material being converted to scrap. Recycling post-consumer Ti scrap directly into solid bulk products is a potential solution for repurposing valuable material. Further, eliminating fresh Ti sponge during recycling might lead to lower energy and greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, a solid-phase process known as friction extrusion was utilized to recycle Ti-6Al-4 V machining chips into solid wires which could be used as feedstock in additive manufacturing. The …

Here, we present results of combined experimental and computations study of V2CoAl, a Heusler alloy that exhibits nearly perfect spin-polarization. Our calculations indicate that this material maintains a high degree of spin-polarization (over 90%) in the wide range of lattice parameters, except at the largest considered unit cell volume. The magnetic alignment of V2CoAl is ferrimagnetic, due to the antialignment of the magnetic moments of vanadium atoms in their two sublattices. The calculated total magnetic moment per formula unit is nearly integer at the optimal lattice parameter and at the smaller volumes of the unit cell, but it deviated from …

Nucleoredoxin (Nxn) encodes a multi-functional enzyme with oxidoreductase activity that regulates many different signaling pathways and cellular processes in a redox-dependent manner. Rare NXN mutations are reported in individuals with recessive Robinow syndrome, which involves mesomelic skeletal dysplasia, short stature, craniofacial dysmorphisms, and incompletely penetrant heart and palate defects. Here we report that Nxn is expressed in the ventral diencephalon and developing pituitary gland, and that Nxn deficient mice have pituitary dysmorphology and craniofacial abnormalities that include defects in the skull base and cleft palate. Nxn mutant mice exhibit reduced WNT signaling and reduced differentiation of pituitary stem …

The vitrification of high-level waste (HLW) by heating a mixture of glass-forming chemicals (GFCs) with the waste can be improved using a constrained optimization problem. This study explores how different uncertainty propagation (UP) methods implemented with the optimization process can affect the glass formulation of nuclear waste glasses. UP is the effort of propagating uncertain inputs through a system to understand and quantify output distributions. Uncertainty intervals are crafted from output distributions to inform the optimization algorithm. UP is often implemented with Monte Carlo (MC) sampling for large nonlinear systems, which can be difficult to implement within a constrained optimization …

Depletion or inhibition of core stress granule proteins, G3BP1 in mammals and TIAR-2 in Caenorhabditis elegans, increases the growth of spontaneously regenerating axons. Inhibition of G3BP1 by expression of its acidic or “B-domain” accelerates axon regeneration after nerve injury, bringing a potential therapeutic strategy for peripheral nerve repair. Here, we asked whether G3BP1 inhibition is a viable strategy to promote regeneration in injured mammalian central nervous system (CNS) where axons do not regenerate spontaneously. G3BP1 B-domain expression was found to promote axon regeneration in the transected spinal cord provided with a permissive peripheral nerve graft (PNG) as well as in …

Solid-state Li-ion electrolytes (SSEs) are essential for the development of next-generation solid-state Li-metal batteries and new Li-extraction electrochemical cells. Among these, the perovskite-type SSE Li3/8Sr7/16Ta3/4Hf1/4O3 (LSTH) has garnered attention for Li-extraction applications, owing to its outstanding chemical and thermal stability and high ionic conductivity. However, its precise crystal structure and Li-ion transport mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. This study addresses these gaps by employing neutron diffraction to resolve LSTH's crystallography and machine learning force field (MLFF) based MD simulations to elucidate ionic transport mechanisms. A single-phase LSTH, synthesized via the sol–gel method, exhibits a room-temperature bulk conductivity of 0.418 mS cm−1 …

Second-Guessing The Jury: The Federal Circuit's Flawed Take On Enhanced Damages In Halo V. Pulse, Dennis D. Crouch
Faculty Publications
This article critically examines the Federal Circuit's February 2025 decision in Halo v. Pulse, focusing on the court's approach to enhanced damages in patent infringement cases. The analysis identifies a fundamental tension between jury findings of willful infringement under a clear and convincing evidence standard and the district court's subsequent discretion to deny enhanced damages by essentially reconsidering the same evidence. The article argues that the Federal Circuit's affirmation of this approach undermines the Supreme Court's 2016 Halo decision, which sought to make enhanced damages more accessible in cases of egregious misconduct. By creating an artificial distinction between "willful infringement" …

In this paper, I argue that Amatoritsero Ede uses the long poem to negotiate the idea of home in an African diasporic context. As a form that carries the implications of length, time, and space, the long poem has been used by poets to interrogate the way we structure the world and to deconstruct grand narratives. The figure of the Black immigrant is one that destabilizes grand narratives of nationalism. This makes the form important in its capacity to ask important questions about nation and tradition even as it transgresses them. As a writer from the Niger Delta, a marginal …

Mesoporous metal oxides (MMOs) have diverse applications including energy storage, catalysis, and separation membranes. Block polymer structure directing agents enable the control of morphology and pore size, however preservation of the nanostructure is often limited to a narrow range of heat treatment temperatures which constrains the tailoring of defect chemistries. High temperature treatments typically lead to collapse of the porous structure as surface area is reduced during crystal growth. Here, using a mesoporous niobium tungstate it is shown that neither in situ carbon generation nor ex situ carbon infiltration alone enable preservation of the ordered mesostructure at temperatures high enough …

Robust projections and predictions of climate variability and change, particularly at regional scales, rely on the driving processes being represented with fidelity in model simulations. Consequently, the role of enhanced horizontal resolution in improved process representation in all components of the climate system continues to be of great interest. Recent simulations suggest the possibility of significant changes in both large-scale aspects of the ocean and atmospheric circulations and in the regional responses to climate change, as well as improvements in representations of small-scale processes and extremes, when resolution is enhanced. The first phase of the High-Resolution Model Intercomparison Project (HighResMIP1) …

Existing literature suggests that, through microphysical processes, additional aerosols lead to a larger number of smaller cloud droplets, which eventually redistributes the latent heat and the precipitation process. This research addresses the question of how sensitive the spatial and temporal patterns of heavy precipitation events are to aerosol concentration. National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) final (FNL) data were used as input to the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, to simulate the case study of …

Climate change could irreversibly modify Southern Ocean ecosystems. Marine ecosystem model (MEM) ensembles can assist policy making by projecting future changes and allowing the evaluation and assessment of alternative management approaches. However, projected changes in total consumer biomass from the Fisheries and Marine Ecosystem Model Intercomparison Project (FishMIP) global MEM ensemble highlight an uncertain future for the Southern Ocean, indicating the need for a region-specific ensemble. A large source of model uncertainty originates from the Earth system models used to force FishMIP models, particularly future changes to lower trophic level biomass and sea-ice coverage. To build confidence in regional MEMs …
