The migration inhibition of guinea pig peritoneal macrophages by a factor(s) from media obtained from blue tongue virus-infected monolayer cultures was studied. Medium from blue tongue virus-infected sheep fetal cell cultures inhibited migration of guinea pig macrophages from agarose droplets. Medium from control cultures and stock virus did not inhibit macrophage migration. Medium containing migration inhibiting factor(s) in vitro induced an inflammatory reaction in the skin of a newborn sheep. The inflammatory reaction was observed 20 h after intradermal inoculation. The skin reaction consisted of infiltrates of mononuclear leukocytes in the superficial dermis. Control medium and stock virus caused no …

16 stallions were castrated and 30 days later assigned to 1 of 4 treatments: testosterone propionate (T, 175 μg/kg BW), estradiol-17β-3-benzoate (E, 44 μg/kg BW), the combination of both steroids (TE) or control (safflower oil). These dosages were administered every other day for 18 days (low dose) and then were doubled (high dose). Treatment at the high dose was continued for 27 days and the geldings were sacrificed. Treatment at the low dose resulted in concentrations of testosterone and estradiol in serum similar to those in intact stallions during the breeding season. A laser dye which is insoluble in water has been dissolved in hexane and emulsified in a water matrix. When pumped with a nitrogen laser, this mixture was observed to lase. The emulsion is superior to a simple hexane solution because the excellent thermo-optical properties of the water matrix help prevent refractive-index gradients from degrading laser performance. This is a useful characteristic for flash-pumped dye lasers, laser-pumped dye lasers, and liquid filters. Another type of solvent system, a critical solution, is also discussed. For certain dyes, a critical solution has even better thermo-optical properties because of its ability to absorb …

The primary tissue sites of catabolism of plasma proteins with long circulating half-lives are unknown. It has been difficult to identify these sites because plasma proteins are delivered to tissues at relatively slow rates but are rapidly degraded intracellularly within lysosomes. Therefore, a tracer attached to protein is lost from the site of uptake before an amount sufficient for quantitation can accumulate. We hypothesized that sucrose (Glupal-2 /3Fruf) would be a useful label to circumvent this difficulty because of the stability of sucrose in lysosomes; and thus, sucrose should remain in tissue long after the protein to which it was …

Variability Of The Reverse-Flow Concentration Technique Of Measuring Plankton Respiration, R. Eugene Turner

Results from the reverse-flow concentration method used to determine community plankton respiration vary significantly because of metabolic inactivation or losses of a portion of the concentrated sample during the filtering process. These losses seem to be nearly constant at concentrations greater than 150X. The within sample coefficient of variation is 20-40% and is primarily a result of clumping and inadequate mixing before subsampling. A rapid processing of the samples is critical for best results.

The pattern of southern pine beetle (SPB) attack was examined in two infestations in East Texas to determine the probability of host tree attack (PA) as a function of distance (X) from a recently attacked tree (pheromone source). In an infestation having a low rate of newly attacked trees per day and only a few pheromone sources occurring simultaneously, distance was a critical factor in determining PA. The probability decreased as In X, and was described by the regression model, PA=0.06757- 0.2583 In X. A proton NMR method is described for determining the orientation of a porphyrin within the heme pocket of a hemoprotein. The pattern of the hyperfine-shifted heme methyl resonances in low-spin ferric model compounds is demonstrated to characteristically reflect the position of a localized low-symmetry perturbation on the π system. The specific assignments via deuteration of the two inconvertible sets of methyl resonances observed for deuteroporphyrin-reconstituted sperm whale metmyoglobin cyanide lead to the conclusion that the low-symmetry perturbations on the heme due to the apoprotein components by a 180°rotation about the α-γ meso axis. Angle dependent intermolecular potential energy surfaces for the two states (2A’ and 2A”) that arise from the interaction of ground (X^2II) state NO with Ar are calculated using the electron gas model to obtain the short range interactions. The average and difference of the two interaction energies are fit to analytic forms convenient for use in scattering calculations and joined smoothly onto the long range van der Waals potential previously determined. The results, which appear to be of useful accuracy, and the applicability of the electron gas model to such open shell–closed shell interactions are discussed.

Current southern pine beetle ( Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm.) control depends heavily upon direct approaches having short-term payoffs. Chemical or physical tactics have fidled to check epidemics in the Gulf South. A major challenge lies in developing and using indirect methods for managing this pest. Promotion of stand resistance and biotic agents, and manipulation of stand density and cutting practices, hold prospect for reducing the incidence and severity of beetle-caused losses.

Southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmerman, and its natural insect enemies were reared from infested loblolly pines, Pinus taeda L., and shortleaf pines, P. echinata Mill. Southern pine beetle broods were most dense during spring (Mar.-May) and least dense in late summer. Populations were higher in late winter than in midsummer. There were no differences in beetle densities between the pine species. Twelve predators and 9 parasites comprised ca. 99% of the natural enemy complex.

A study was conducted in the Post Oak Belt of East Texas to determine which site factors affected height growth of slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.). Height-age pairs were developed from stem analysis data. Nonlinear regression was implemented to develop a generalized height-age model. After curves were developed, stepwise regression was used to determine impacts of environmental variables on height growth. Environmental factors correlated with height growth included A horizon depth and those related to moisture relations including seasonal precipitation, average daily temperature, and texture of the A horizon. The hydrometallurgy of copper may involve leaching of the metal from its ore with an aqueous solution containing cupric and ferric chloride. The subsequent deposition of copper from such a process stream is modeled here in an idealized electrochemical cell with a rotating-disk electrode. The potential distribution and concentration profiles within the diffusion layer are predicted for given potential differences between the electrode and the solution. The circulating half-lives of the four isozymes of bovine pancreatic ribonuclease (RNases A, B, C, and D) have been determined in normal and in nephrectomized rats. The isozymes differ only in their glycosyl content. While A contains no sugars, B has a simple oligosaccharide (GlcNAc, Man,+), and C and D each have a complex oligosaccharide (GlcNAc, Man,., Gal, Fuc NeuAc%, and GlcNAc, Mans Gal, Fuc NeuAc,, respectively) attached to Asn-34 of the polypeptide chain. Two free radicals formed when single crystals of potassium hydroxylamine disulfonate are irradiated with gamma rays at 77degrees K were studied by ESR. The ESR spectra result from a predominant center (radical A) exhibiting large 14N and 1H hyperfine splittings and from lesser amounts of Fremy's radical [O-dotN(SO3)2-2]. The g and hyperfine tensors of these radicals have been evaluated and are discussed. Radical A, whose identity remains in doubt, may be regarded as the precursor to Fremy's radical; on warming its lines decay and those of Fremy's radical are formed. Pade approximant methods and experimental frequency dependent polarizabilities are used to calculate reliable van der Waals C6 coefficients for the interaction of CO with He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, H, Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, H2, N2, O2, CO2, and CO. Error bounds are given for the C6 coefficients and for the CO oscillator strength sums.

Formulas are derived for the van der Waals Cn coefficients for the interaction of a diatomic molecule in a II electronic state with an S-state atom. Two triatomic states arise from the degenerate IIstate. The average of the two energies has the usual Legendre polynomial (PL) angular dependence, but the difference in energies of the two states is shown to have associated Legendre polynomial (PML with M=2) angular dependence. Procedures for including spin orbit coupling are included, and the extension to interactions of Delta- and Phi-state molecules is discussed. Endoparasitic Nematodes Of Ips Bark Beetles In Eastern Texas, Jack E. Coster, William Hoffard

East Texas Ips species contained 4 specific internal nematodes; I. avulsus (Eichhoff) were infected with Parasitylenchus avulsi Massey, I. grandicollis (Eichhoff) with Contortylenchus grandicolli (Massey) Rlihm, and I. calligraphus (Germar) with Contortylenchus elongatus (Massey) Nickle and Parasitaphelenchus sp. In all 3 bark beetles, infection peaked in July and August when 50-58% of adults from naturally attacked pine trees contained nematodes. Infection levels declined to 20-30% during January and February. Infected I. grandicollis and I. avulsus adults appeared lighter in color than noninfected adults. Nematode infection apparently delayed emergence of both sexes of I. grandicollis and females of I. avulsus. In …

One testis and epididymis from each of 8 sexually rested, rhesus monkeys >6 yr old was removed during fall (the natural breeding season) to establish the productivity of the testis and the spermatozoal storage capacity of the epididymis. The efficiency of spermatozoal production was quite uniform and averaged 23 ± 1 X 106 sperm per gram of testicular parenchyma per day, although testicular parenchymal weight ranged from 15 to 32 g. Daily spermatozoal production averaged 547 ± 69 X 106 sperm per testis. Thus, the typical rhesus monkey produces about 1.1 X 109 sperm daily during the breeding season. The …
