Close Coupling Test Of Classical And Semiclassical Cross Sections For Rotationally Inelastic Ar-N2 Collisions, Russell T. Pack

Accurate quantum mechanical close coupling (CC) integral cross sections are reported for rotationally inelastic Ar-N2 collisions at room temperature using an empirical intermolecular potential. These cross sections are used to test the infinite order sudden (IOS) approximation and the results of several methods [classical trajectories (CT), full sudden (SA), generalized phase shift (GPS), and classical limit generalized phase shift (CGPS)] as reported in the preceding paper by Pattengill. The IOS approximation works very well for cross sections involving low rotational states. The CT method works well for all the cross sections examined, justifying the popular belief that the rotational motion …

Pigeons obtained food by making four responses on three keys in a specified sequence, e.g., left, right, center, right. Under the “tandem‐learning” condition, all three keys were the same color throughout the response sequence, and the sequence was changed from session to session. After total errors per session (overall accuracy) and within‐session error reduction (learning) had stabilized, the effects of varying doses of phenobarbital and chlordiazepoxide were assessed. For comparison, the drug tests were also conducted under a “performance” condition, in which the response sequence was the same from session to session, and under corresponding “chain‐learning” and “chain‐performance” conditions, where …

Rotationally Inelastic Molecular Scattering. Computational Tests Of Some Simple Solutions Of The Strong Coupling Problem, Thomas P. Tsien, Gregory A. Parker, Russell T. Pack

Partial cross sections (opacity functions) for rotational transitions in atom-diatom collisions are computed in the infinite-order sudden (IOS) approximation and compared with accurate close-coupling (CC) calculations. Agreement is good in the dominant coupling (small total angular momentum J) region. Simple methods for calculating integral inelastic cross sections are discussed, and it is found that accurate cross sections can often be computed very simply, even when large numbers of channels are coupled together, by using IOS or first-order sudden (FOS) approximations for small J and CC or exponential Born (EBDW) methods for large J.

The Role Of Mannosyl-Phosphoryl-Dihydropolyisoprenol In The Synthesis Of Mammalian Glycoproteins, John W. Baynes, An-Fei Hsu, Edward C. Heath

A mouse myeloma tumor was used as a model system to study the biochemical steps involved in the incorporation of mannose into glycoproteins. This tumor, MOPC-46B, synthesizes a K-type immunoglobulin light chain (K-46) which is a glycoprotein with a single oligosaccharide side chain containing mannose as one of its constituent sugars. MOPC-46B microsomal preparations contain enzymes which transfer mannose from the sugar nucleotide, GDPmannose, to endogenous lipid and protein acceptors. Formation of the mannolipid proceeds by the reversible transfer of mannose from GDP-mannose to an endogenous phospholipid. Ultimobranchial Thyroid Neoplasms In Bulls. A Syndrome Resembling Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma In Man, Hugh E. Black, Charles C. Capen, David M. Young

A syndrome of ultimobranchial thyroid neoplasms which shares many similarities with medullary thyroid carcinoma in man occurs frequently in populations of adult bulls. The results of this investigation demonstrated that ultimobranchial neoplasms were composed of poorly differentiated parafollicular (C—) cells with extensive aggregations of microfilaments, clusters of ribosomes, and prominent Golgi apparatuses. Secretion granules often were interspersed between microfilaments. Other more columnar neoplastic cells assumed a ductal pattern. The prominent stroma contained amyloid fibrils and collagen fibers. By comparison, cells comprising medullary thyroid carcinoma were more differentiated parafollicular cells with well developed cytoplasmic organelles and numerous membrane‐limited secretion granules. On Improved Wkb (Uniform Asymptotic) Quantum Conditions, Dunham Corrections, The Langer Modification, And Rkr Potentials, Russell T. Pack

An improvement to the WKB quantum condition for the rotation-vibration levels of diatomic molecules, known empirically to give RKR potentials of increased accuracy and to account for the Dunham correction Y00, is derived using uniform asymptotic methods. The role of the Langer transformation in this problem is also discussed.

On The Mechanism Of Low-Temperature Termolecular Atomic Recombination, Russell T. Pack, Richard L. Snow, Wesley D. Smith

A simple theory of gas-phase termolecular atomic recombination kinetics is presented which treats the bound-complex (BC) mechanism in a fashion which parallels the Roberts, Bernstein, and Curtiss resonance theory of the energy-transfer (ET) mechanism. The ET rate constant has a low temperature maximum, but the BC rate constant does not. The contributions of the two mechanisms to the low-temperature recombination of hydrogen atoms, with He, Ar, and H2 as third bodies, are estimated and compared. The presence (absence) of a low-temperature maximum in the observable total rate constant is determined by absence (presence) of bound vibrational levels of the hydrogen-third …

Response of field populations of Delldroetoll1lS frontalis Zimmermann to their aggregating pheromone was correlated with pheromone content of dissectted hindgut tissues of adult beetles a determined by the gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) technique. Adult beetles in various stages of feeding activity and reproductive states were used for this purpose. Two major components of the aggregating pheromones, frontalin and trans-verbenol, were found in the largest quantities in emergent unfed females. After 48 hours of feeding, frontal in content of the hindguts was 29% and trans-verbeno content was only 5% of that of emergent females. Continuous bioassays of females feeding in host material …

Academic freedom has been blurred in law and in popular usage. Its clarification should enable the Supreme Court to grant it explicit protection under the Constitution as an identifiable subset of First Amendment freedoms. Its identification with the professional endeavors of faculty members, moreover, should reduce the tendency of institutions to intrude upon the aprofessional personal liberties of the faculty even while adequately protecting the extramural professional pursuits of the faculty and assuring them of equal protection in their interests as private citizens. Calcitonin Activity In Ultimobranchial Neoplasms From Bulls, D. M. Young, C. C. Capen, H. E. Black

Ultimobranchial neoplasms from 5 bulls (hat were extracted and assayed individually contained approximately 68% as much calcitonin activity (452 ± 68 MRC mU/g) as thyroid glands from control bulls (663 ± 165 MRC mU/g). These results were consistent with the ultrastructural finding that thyroid neoplasms in old bulls were composed of primitive ultimobranchial cells which contained few mature secretory granules characteristic of parafollicular (C-) cells. Significant difference in calcitonin concentration was not detected between thyroid glands of control cows (617 ± 106 MRC mU/g) and bulls without ultimobranchial neoplasms. © 1971, American College of Veterinary Pathologists. Showers of muons which result from interactions of primary cosmic rays high in the atmosphere appear deep underground as bundles of nearly parallel muons. For threshold energies of 1 TeV and arrival zenith angles of 45 degrees, those events having a small mean number of muons are described by a power law distribution in shower size having an exponent of ≅ -3.7 and a radial density distribution that decreases with distance R from the shower axis a little less rapidly than exp(-R/5.4 m). High-Pressure Phase Studies On Sodium–Potassium Alloys, D. Ray Anderson, J. Bevan Ott, Rex J. Goates, H. Tracy Hall

The solid–liquid phase diagrams were investigated to 60 kbar for elemental sodium, potassium, and various sodium–potassium alloys. The data for Na and K are in general agreement with those of earlier workers. In the alloy system the temperatures of both the peritectic and eutectic halts increase as the pressure increases, but with different slopes, so that the two invariant points merge at approximately 35 kbar. Above this pressure, two halts are again observed. One increases with increasing pressure, and the other decreases with increasing pressure up to 55 kbar, where it abruptly starts increasing again.
