A Comparison Of Bullying In Four Rural Middle And High Schools, Jody Isernhagen, Sandra Harris Jan 2004

A Comparison Of Bullying In Four Rural Middle And High Schools, Jody Isernhagen, Sandra Harris

Faculty Publications

Bullying in rural school settings is clearly a problem and some of our students are suffering as a result.. Bullying is defined in this study of 819 rural middle and high school students as when a student is exposed repeatedly to negative actions by one or more other students. Students responded to a questionnaire about how often and where bullying occurred and who students told. Analysis of the data reported frequencies, and the Pearson chi-square was used to test for significance (p <.05) for gender and school level. Results indicated that while there are many similarities, there are some differences in bullying at these two levels that should be considered when reducing bullying. First, students should be encouraged to develop positive strategies to react to name calling and teasing particularly at the middle school level. Second, administrators and teachers must communicate better with students that they care about reducing bullying, especially at the high school level.

Sterol Carrier Protein-2 Directly Interacts With Caveolin-1 In Vitro And In Vivo, Minglong Zhou, Rebecca D. Parr, Anca D. Petrescu, H. Ross Payne, Barbara P. Atshaves, Ann B. Kier, Judith M. Ball, Friedhelm Schroeder

Faculty Publications

HDL-mediated reverse-cholesterol transport as well as phosphoinositide signaling are mediated through plasma membrane microdomains termed caveolae/lipid rafts. However, relatively little is known regarding mechanism(s) whereby these lipids traffic to or are targeted to caveolae/lipid rafts. Since sterol carrier protein-2 (SCP-2) binds both cholesterol and phosphatidylinositol, the possibility that SCP-2 might interact with caveolin-1 and caveolae was examined. Double immunolabeling and laser scanning fluorescence microscopy showed that a small but significant portion of SCP-2 colocalized with caveolin-1 primarily at the plasma membrane of L-cells and more so within intracellular punctuate structures in hepatoma cells. In SCP-2 overexpressing L-cells, SCP-2 was detected …

"A New Phase Of The Complex Trinitratotris(Triphenylphosphineoxide)Neodymium(Lll), J. Brannon Gary

Faculty Publications

There has been considerable interest in the complexes formed by the lanthanides with various monodentate neutral ligands with O as the donor atom. Phosphine oxides, in particular, have proven useful in complexing to lanthanide metal ions and have found practical application in the solvent extraction and separation of lanthanides.1 Several lanthanide(III) nitrate complexes with triphenylphosphine oxide (OPPh3) have been prepared resulting in complexes having as few as two and as many as four OPPh3 groups per lanthanide center.2−4 An earlier study by Cousins and Hart5 identified the complex [Nd(OPPh3)3(NO3)3]. Two crystal phases of this same complex were briefly reported later …

International Law And Religion In Latin America: The Beagle Channel Dispute, M C. Mirow Jan 2004

International Law And Religion In Latin America: The Beagle Channel Dispute, M C. Mirow

Faculty Publications

In 1978, an Argentine diplomat proposed a method of defusing a territorial dispute that very nearly sparked off a war between Argentina and Chile, It,was an offer calculated to be rejected by Chile, and yet Chile’s immediate response was “Agreed” - a response so unthinkable to Argentina that within hours its military Junta revoked the power of the Foreign Minister and the President to sign the agreement it had just proposed. In December 1978, the countries were quickly moving towards a war that, if waged, would most likely have engulfed much of Latin America. The Vatican, however, intervened and brought …

Modeling Energy Savings From Urban Shade Trees: An Assessment Of The Citygreen Energy Conservation Module, Daniel Unger, Courtney Parks, Andrew Carver

Faculty Publications

CITYgreen software has become a commonly used tool to quantify the benefits of urban shade trees. Despite its frequent use, little research has been conducted to validate results of the CITYgreen energy conservation module. The first objective of this study is to perform a familiar application of CITYgreen software to predict the potential energy savings contribution of existing tree canopies in residential neighborhoods during peak cooling summer months. Unlike previous studies utilizing CITYgreen, this study also seeks to assess the software's performance by comparing model results (i.e., predicted energy savings) with actual savings (i.e., savings derived directly from energy consumption …

Resisting Marriage And Renouncing Womanhood: The Choice Of Taiwanese Buddhist Nuns, Hillary Crane Jan 2004

Resisting Marriage And Renouncing Womanhood: The Choice Of Taiwanese Buddhist Nuns, Hillary Crane

Faculty Publications

The traditional Chinese perception of Buddhist monastics is that they choose to renounce the world out of desperation — after failing in the world such that their only options are suicide or the monastery. That this perception of the monastic life persists in Taiwan today is evident in monastics’ own descriptions of their families’ responses to their choice as well as in several recent scandals related to monastic life. Despite the widespread negative perception of monastics, increasing numbers of women are choosing this life. Drawing on extensive fieldwork with relatively new monastics, the author explores the choice Buddhist nuns make …

Appellate Courts, Historical Facts, And The Civil-Criminal Distinction, Chad M. Oldfather Jan 2004

Appellate Courts, Historical Facts, And The Civil-Criminal Distinction, Chad M. Oldfather

Faculty Publications

The standard justification for the general prohibition against the evaluation of facts by appellate courts centers on those courts' perceived incompetence, relative to trial-level fact finders, to engage in the task. This Article examines that justification and finds it wanting. While trial courts and juries are indeed better-positioned to assess much of what takes place at trial, this advantage is not universal. An appellate court's access to and reliance on a transcript of the proceedings below confers on it certain advantages not only because it aids in information retention, but also because its textual basis allows the court to perform …

Multiculturalism And The Future Of Tribal Sovereignty, Scott C. Idleman Jan 2004

Multiculturalism And The Future Of Tribal Sovereignty, Scott C. Idleman

Faculty Publications

American Indian tribes would appear to be natural constituents and beneficiaries of the multiculturalism movement. Their members are generally conceptualized as racial or ethnic minorities; they have endured social and legal oppression and continue to encounter structural and even intentional discrimination; and, not least importantly, they possess genuinely different cultures and consequently add diverse perspectives to society. Despite this apparent fit, this Article questions the extent to which tribes and tribal members actually should align themselves with multicultural proponents and initiatives. The basis for this inquiry is that, unlike other societal subgroups, each recognized tribe is a distinct geopolitical entity …

Bringing In The State: Toward A Constitutional Duty To Protect From Mob Violence, Susan S. Kuo Jan 2004

Bringing In The State: Toward A Constitutional Duty To Protect From Mob Violence, Susan S. Kuo

Faculty Publications

Mob violence can inflict devastating costs. Although typically wrought by private individuals, the incidence of riot as well as extent of riot harm often turn on the adequacy of police preparation and planning. Under the English common law, local governments were responsible for providing riot protection for their denizens. In keeping with the English tradition, early state laws in the United States also provided for communal riot responsibility, and when the states ratified the Fourteenth Amendment, state obligations in the riot context were well-established. Despite the common law underpinnings of the governmental duty to protect citizens from mob violence, however, …

Generic domain names, however, possess inherent goodwill that dictates different treatment.

Is There A Place For Race As A Legal Concept, Sharona Hoffman Jan 2004

Is There A Place For Race As A Legal Concept, Sharona Hoffman

Faculty Publications

What does "race" mean? The word "race" is omnipresent in American social, political, and legal discourse. The concept of "race" is central to contemporary debate about affirmative action, racial profiling, hate crimes, health inequities, and many other issues. Nevertheless, the best research in genetics, medicine, and the social sciences reveals that the concept of "race" is elusive and has no reliable definition.

This article argues that "race" is an unnecessary and potentially pernicious concept. As evidenced by the history of slavery, segregation, the Holocaust, and other human tragedies, the idea of "race" can perpetuate prejudices and misconceptions and serve as …

Upper limits on the [Formula Presented] flux at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory have been set based on the [Formula Presented] charged-current reaction on deuterium. The reaction produces a positron and two neutrons in coincidence. This distinctive signature allows a search with very low background for [Formula Presented]’s from the Sun and other potential sources. Both differential and integral limits on the [Formula Presented] flux have been placed in the energy range from 4–14.8 MeV. For an energy-independent [Formula Presented] conversion mechanism, the integral limit on the flux of solar [Formula Presented]’s in the energy range from 4–14.8 MeV is found …

Photosensitization by porphyrins and other tetrapyrrole chromophores is used in biology and medicine to kill cells. This light-triggered generation of singlet oxygen is used to eradicate cancer cells in a process dubbed "photodynamic therapy," or PDT. Most photosensitizers are of amphiphilic character and they partition into cellular lipid membranes. The photodamage that they inflict to the host cell is mainly localized in membrane proteins. This photosensitized damage must occur in competition with the rapid diffusion of singlet oxygen through the lipid phase and its escape into the aqueous phase. In this article we show that the extent of damage can …

Camptothecin Accumulation In Camptotheca Acuminata Seedlings In Response To Acetylsalicylic Acid Treatment, Zhanhai Li, Zhijun Liu

Faculty Publications

Camptothecin is an anti-cancer alkaloid. Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) treatment was evaluated as a potential tool for increasing camptothecin accumulation (concentration and yield) in Camptotheca acuminata. Increasing ASA concentration increased leaf camptothecin concentration, but stunted growth and decreased total leaf camptothecin yield. Thus, ASA treatment does not enhance camptothecin yield.
