The Anti-Colonial Revolutionary In Contemporary Bollywood Cinema, Vidhu Aggarwal Jun 2010

The Anti-Colonial Revolutionary In Contemporary Bollywood Cinema, Vidhu Aggarwal

Faculty Publications

In her article "The Anti-Colonial Revolutionary in Contemporary Bollywood Cinema" Vidhu Aggarwal discusses several contemporary films including Rakesh Omprakash Mehra's Rang de Basanti with focus on the figure of the revolutionary hero. The Bollywood film is a cultural form that combines several aesthetic styles, from within India and from the outside. With its formal heterogeneity and as a product of one of India's largest cities, Mumbai Bollywood has had an ongoing fascination with "arrival," that is, with India's status as a contemporary nation-state. While some Bollywood films seem to celebrate fantasy scenarios of India's arrival on the global scene, at …

Stochastic Feature Selection With Distributed Feature Spacing For Hyperspectral Data, Jeffrey D. Clark, Michael J. Mendenhall, Gilbert L. Peterson Jun 2010

Stochastic Feature Selection With Distributed Feature Spacing For Hyperspectral Data, Jeffrey D. Clark, Michael J. Mendenhall, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Feature subset selection is a well studied problem in machine learning. One short-coming of many methods is the selection of highly correlated features; a characteristic of hyperspectral data. A novel stochastic feature selection method with three major components is presented. First, we present an optimized feature selection method that maximizes a heuristic using a simulated annealing search which increases the chance of avoiding locally optimum solutions. Second, we exploit local cross correlation pair-wise amongst classes of interest to select suitable features for class discrimination. Third, we adopt the concept of distributed spacing from the multi-objective optimization community to distribute features …

Results are reported from a joint analysis of Phase I and Phase II data from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. The effective electron kinetic energy threshold used is Teff=3.5 MeV, the lowest analysis threshold yet achieved with water Cherenkov detector data. In units of 106 cm-2 s-1, the total flux of active-flavor neutrinos from B8 decay in the Sun measured using the neutral current (NC) reaction of neutrinos on deuterons, with no constraint on the B8 neutrino energy spectrum, is found to be ΦNC=5.140-0.158+0.160(stat)-0.117+0.132(syst). These uncertainties are more than a factor of 2 smaller than previously published results. Also presented are …

Superglass Phase Of Interacting Bosons, Ka Ming Tam, Scott Geraedts, Stephen Inglis, Michel J.P. Gingras, Roger G. Melko May 2010

Superglass Phase Of Interacting Bosons, Ka Ming Tam, Scott Geraedts, Stephen Inglis, Michel J.P. Gingras, Roger G. Melko

Faculty Publications

We introduce a Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with random disordered interactions as a model to study the interplay of superfluidity and glassiness in a system of three-dimensional hard-core bosons at half-filling. Solving the model using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that these disordered interactions promote a stable superglass phase, where superflow and glassy density localization coexist in equilibrium without exhibiting phase separation. The robustness of the superglass phase is underlined by its existence in a replica mean-field calculation on the infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Genomic Organization And Molecular Phylogenies Of The Beta (Β) Keratin Multigene Family In The Chicken (Gallus Gallus) And Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia Guttata): Implications For Feather Evolution, Matthew J. Greenwold, Roger H. Sawyer

Faculty Publications

Background: The epidermal appendages of reptiles and birds are constructed of beta (β) keratins. The molecularphylogeny of these keratins is important to understanding the evolutionary origin of these appendages, especially feathers. Knowing that the crocodilian β-keratin genes are closely related to those of birds, the published genomes ofthe chicken and zebra finch provide an opportunity not only to compare the genomic organization of their β- keratins, but to study their molecular evolution in archosaurians.

Results: The subfamilies (claw, feather, feather-like, and scale) of β-keratin genes are clustered in the same 5' to 3' orderon microchromosome 25 in chicken and zebra finch, …

Mitt Romney’S Religion: A Five Factor Model For Analysis Of Media Representation Of Mormon Identity, Sherry Baker, Joel Campbell

Faculty Publications

Mitt Romney’s religion accounted for 50% of all religion-related presidential primary campaign stories in 2007, and 30% of Romney’s total media coverage focused on his Mormon faith. This article reviews that coverage and considers it within the larger historical context of the complex relationship between media and Mormonism throughout the 180-year history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A factorial model (the first in the area of Mormon Media Studies) is proposed by which to document and analyze the wider societal influences that are reflected in media representation of Mormon identity. The model’s 5 factors include the …

Lysine-Based Zwitterionic Molecular Micelle For Simultaneous Separation Of Acidic And Basic Proteins Using Open Tubular Capillary Electrochromatography, Leonard Moore, Zorabel M. Lejeune, Candace A. Luces, Arther T. Gates, Min Li, Bilal El-Zahab, Jayne C. Garno, Isiah M. Warner

Faculty Publications

In this work, a zwitterionic molecular micelle, poly-ε-sodium- undecanoyl lysinate (poly-ε-SUK), was synthesized and employed as a coating in open tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) for protein separation. The zwitterionic poly-ε-SUK containing both carboxylic acid and amine groups can be either protonated or deprotonated depending on the pH of the background electrolyte; therefore, either an overall positively or negatively charged coating can be achieved. This zwitterionic coating allows protein separations in either normal or reverse polarity mode depending on the pH of the background electrolyte. The protein mixtures contained four basic proteins (lysozyme, cytochrome c, α-chymotrypsinogen A, and ribonuclease A) and …

Electron Angular Distributions In Near-Threshold Atomic Ionization, T. Marchenko, H. G. Muller, K. J. Schafer, M. J.J. Vrakking

Faculty Publications

We present angle- and energy-resolved measurements of photoelectrons produced in strong-field ionization of Xe using a tunable femtosecond laser. An occurrence of highly oscillatory patterns in the angular distribution at low photoelectron kinetic energy is observed that correlates with channel closing/opening over a wide range of laser parameters. The correlation is investigated both experimentally and by means of systematic analysis of numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Our experimental and numerical results are in quantitative agreement with the semi-classical model introduced by Arbó et al (2008 Phys. Rev. A 78 013406), which relates the oscillatory patterns to interference between …

A Sustainable Model For Opencourseware Development, Justin Johansen, David Wiley

Faculty Publications

The purposes of this study were to (a) determine the cost of converting BYU Independent Study’s e-learning courses into OpenCourseWare, (b) assess the impact of opening those courses on paid enrollment in the credit-bearing versions of the courses, and (c) use these data to judge whether or not an OpenCourseWare program could be financially self-sustaining over the long-term without grant monies or other subsidies. The findings strongly suggest that the BYU Independent Study model of publishing OpenCourseWare is financially self-sustaining, allowing the institution to provide a significant public good while generating new revenue and meeting its ongoing financial obligations.

Likeability V. Competence: The Impossible Choice Faced By Female Politicians, Attenuated By Lawyers, Andrea K. Schneider, Catherine H. Tinsley, Sandra Cheldelin, Emily T. Amanatullah

Faculty Publications

The 2008 election highlighted a dilemma often faced by women in the professional world - a double bind between being perceived as competent or as likeable. Both qualities are imperative for success but the incongruity of normative female roles (warm, nurturing) with characteristics perceived necessary for professional success (independence, assertiveness) means that women are either seen as likeable, but incompetent, or as competent, but unlikeable. Wherever you fell along the political spectrum, it is clear that Hillary Clinton’s historic candidacy for the Presidency of the United States followed by Sarah Palin’s candidacy for Vice-President provided a unique lens for considering …

Performance, Properties And Plasticity Of Identified Oxytocin And Vasopressin Neurones In Vitro, William E. Armstrong, L. Wang, C. Li, R. Teruyama

Faculty Publications

The neurohypophysial hormones oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (VP) originate from hypothalamic neurosecretory cells in the paraventricular and supraoptic (SON) nuclei. The firing rate and pattern of action potentials arising from these neurones determine the timing and quantity of peripheral hormone release. We have used immunochemical identification of biocytin-filled SON neurones in hypothalamic slices in vitro to uncover differences between OT and VP neurones in membrane and synaptic properties, firing patterns, and plasticity during pregnancy and lactation. In this review, we summarise some recent findings from this approach: (i) VP neuronal excitability is influenced by slow (sDAP) and fast (fDAP) depolarising afterpotentials …

Interaction Of Francisella Asiatica With Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) Innate Immunity, Esteban Soto, Denise Fernandez, Ronald Thune, John P. Hawke

Faculty Publications

Members of the genus Francisella are facultative intracellular bacteria that cause important diseases in a wide variety of animals worldwide, including humans and fish. Several genes that are important for intramacrophage survival have been identified, including the iglC gene, which is found in the iglABCD operon in the Francisella sp. pathogenicity island (FPI). In the present study, we examined the interaction of wild-type Francisella asiatica and a ΔiglC mutant strain with fish serum and head kidney-derived macrophages (HKDM). Both the wild-type and the mutant strains were resistant to killing by normal and heat-inactivated sera. The wild-type F. asiatica is able …

Discerning Writing Assessment: Insights Into An Analytical Rubric, Lucy K. Spence

Faculty Publications

Two teachers engage in assessment discussions based on an analytical rubric to assess an ELL student’s writing. Discourse analysis methods were used to analyze recorded/transcribed assessments and discussions. The teachers focused on descriptors for the rubric’s lowest scores, neglecting their own knowledge and experience with English learners. As an alternative, a sociocultural oriented assessment is discussed including implications for the classroom.

Impact Of After-School Nutrition Workshops In A Public Library Setting, Marjorie Freedman, Audrey Nickell

Faculty Publications

Objective: To determine if after-school nutrition workshops conducted in public libraries were related to lasting changes in food choice. Methods: “Snack Smart” workshops, based on Social Cognitive Theory, were conducted in 8 branch libraries (49 ethnically diverse children, ages 9 to 14) to assess changes in consumption of targeted food items by pretest, posttest, and follow-up food frequency questionnaires. Results were analyzed using the Friedman test for repeated measures and Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results: Intake of milk, vegetables, and water significantly increased at 3-week posttest (P < .05), but only water intake showed a significant change from pretest to follow-up 3 months later. Conclusions and Implications: This low-intensity program did not produce lasting behavior change, as measured by changes in food frequency at 3 months post- intervention. The study supports the need to critically evaluate out-of-school nutrition programs for lasting impact.

Obesity is recognized as one of the most important underlying risk factors for a wide variety of diseases, including heart disease and diabetes. Women are particularly prone to obesity, and approaches that address life transitions across the life span suggest that a number of factors may converge at passage points, such as menopause, that contribute to weight accumulation in the aging woman. The menopausal phase of a woman's life brings a number of changes that may trigger and maintain weight gain. Although the prevalence of overweight and obesity is attributable to each of these factors, it is most likely the …

Carkner, Matthew J. Tanner, Michael Shtutman, Francis Vacherot, Stéphane Terry, Alexandre De La Taille, Ralph Buttyan

Faculty Publications

Background: Castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) develops as a consequence of hormone therapies used to deplete androgens in advanced prostate cancer patients. CRPC cells are able to grow in a low androgen environment and this is associated with anomalous activity of their endogenous androgen receptor (AR) despite the low systemic androgen levels in the patients. Therefore, the reactivated tumor cell androgen signaling pathway is thought to provide a target for control of CRPC. Previously, we reported that Hedgehog (Hh) signaling was conditionally activated by androgen deprivation in androgen sensitive prostate cancer cells and here we studied the potential for cross-talk …

Fixing Financial Markets: The Role Of Accountability Regimes, Melvin J. Dubnick

Faculty Publications

After a brief consideration of the dynamics of the “blame games” that generate and shape the current reform agenda for fixing financial markets, I argue for an approach that goes beyond mere tinkering with traditional regulatory mechanisms and instead focuses on the need to reform the “governance regimes” of the financial sector. In the process I make the case for the existence to two interrelated regimes within the domain of governance requiring attention if we are to make headway in the design of relevant and effective reforms. One of those regimes — the regulatory, which focuses on governance through control …

This article endorses the idea that cyber operations may be conducted in all war-fighting domains: air, space, cyberspace, land, and sea. In addition, despite the immaturity of cyberspace operational doctrines, the doctrines from air and space remain relevant and applicable to the cyberspace domain. Cyber operations are just another set of tools in the commander's toolbox. Although cyber operations have distinct ways of achieving effects, from an Air Force perspective they are similar too the air and space operations that support air and space (and cyberspace) functions. Known and established cyber operations provide war fighters with viable options to kinetic …

Hundreds of critics in the past eighteen months have heaped abuse on the SEC Enforcement Division. How could the Division have missed so much misbehavior on Wall Street? How could the Division's young lawyers have been charmed by Bernie Madoff and thwarted from discovering his terrible crimes? Most critics seem to agree that the Division's most urgent needs include developing substantially more financial sophistication among Division lawyers and investigators; better communications within the Commission and with other federal agencies; and a meaningful system for handling tips and processing information. The SEC's response to its critics has been remarkable. The Commission …
