Some Plant Leaves Have Orientation-Dependent Epr And Nmr Spectra, Douglas C. Mccain, Ted C. Selig, Govindjee, John L. Markley Feb 1984

Some Plant Leaves Have Orientation-Dependent Epr And Nmr Spectra, Douglas C. Mccain, Ted C. Selig, Govindjee, John L. Markley

Faculty Publications

Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectra of leaves from 50 plant species were obtained at a spectrometer frequency of 470 MHz. Water present in leaf samples gives rise to characteristic spectral patterns. Most species show only one broad 1H NMR peak; however, the leaves of some plants display complex, orientation-dependent spectra in which a common three-line pattern is discerned. The pattern varies with the angle between the leaf surface and the external magnetic field. Proton relaxation measurements show the presence of at least two water compartments in the leaves. The compartments are responsible for different components …

With rising competition for scarce resources, forest managers are increasingly concerned with estimating optimal solutions to complex problems. Heuristic procedures are often useful in solving such problems.

Velocity Measurements Of Humans By Computers, J. B. Rafert, R. C. Nicklin Jan 1984

Velocity Measurements Of Humans By Computers, J. B. Rafert, R. C. Nicklin

Faculty Publications

Distance and time, two fundamental quantities, are discussed early in most introductory physics courses. By dividing a change in distance by time to get velocity, and by dividing a change in velocity by time to get acceleration, two more important quantities result. With these the real world of automobiles and jet planes and applications of Newton's second law is available for interpretation from an analytical point of view. In order to get students thinking reliably about these important ideas it seems important to have direct measurements of distance and time over short enough intervals to talk sensibly about "instantaneous" velocities.

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Some Fluoride Perovskites, An Undergraduate Experiment In Solid State Chemistry, Richard H. Langley, Colleen K. Schmitz, Maureen B. Langley

Faculty Publications

In light of the increasing importance of solid state chemistry, an experiment dealing with at least some aspects of this rapidly expanding area should he included in advanced chemistry laboratories. Herein is described one of the experiments that we have developed to meet this need. This experiment was designed for a senior level integrated chemistry lab taken by all our chemistry majors. Normally six to eight hours are needed to complete this experiment. This experiment deals with the synthesis and characterization of a perovskite. Perovskites were chosen because compounds with this structure are important in solid state technology, and since …

Thinning Optimization In Mixed-Species Forests, Steven H. Bullard, W. David Klemperer Jan 1984

Thinning Optimization In Mixed-Species Forests, Steven H. Bullard, W. David Klemperer

Faculty Publications

An approach is summarized for estimating optimal thinning and final harvest age for existing, mixed-species stands. The method involves stand-table projection with upgrowth and mortality equations, formulated as an integer-nonlinear programming problem. Random search methods are proposed for estimating optimal cutting prescriptions. Such solution methods warrant further study in forestry, since their use enables broad application of stand-specific modeling results.

On The Order-Theoretical Foundation Of A Theory Of Quasicompactly Generated Spaces Without Separation Axiom, Karl H. Hofmann, Jimmie D. Lawson Jan 1984

On The Order-Theoretical Foundation Of A Theory Of Quasicompactly Generated Spaces Without Separation Axiom, Karl H. Hofmann, Jimmie D. Lawson

Faculty Publications

A Hausdorff space X is said to be compactly generated (a /e-space) if and only if the open subsets V of X are precisely those subsets for which K n V is open in K for all compact subsets of K of X. We interpret this property as a duality property of the lattice 0{ X) of open sets of X, This view point allows the introduction of the concept of being quasicompactly generated for an arbitrary sober space X. The methods involve the duality theory of up-complete semilattices, and certain inverse limit constructions. In the process, we verify that …

A Harnack Estimate For Real Normal Surface Singularities, William A. Adkins Jan 1984

A Harnack Estimate For Real Normal Surface Singularities, William A. Adkins

Faculty Publications

According to Harnack’s theorem the number of topological components of the real part of a nonsingular projective curve X defined over R is at most g(X) + 1, where g(X) is the genus of X. The purpose of the present paper is to present two estimates which can be considered analogs of Harnack’s theorem for normal surface singularities defined over R. © 1984 by Pacific Journal of Mathematics.

Incompressible Planar Surfaces In 3-Manifolds, C. Mc A. Gordon, R. A. Litherland

Faculty Publications

Let M be an orientable 3-manifold and T a torus component of ∂M. We show that the boundary-slopes of incompressible, boundary-incompressible planar surfaces (P,∂P)⊂(M,T) are pairwise within distance 4; in particular, there are at most six such boundary-slopes. A corollary is that, for any knot K in S3, at most six Dehn surgeries on K can yield a reducible 3-manifold. © 1984.

On Minor-Minimally-Connected Matroids, James G. Oxley Jan 1984

On Minor-Minimally-Connected Matroids, James G. Oxley

Faculty Publications

By a well-known result of Tutte, if e is an element of a connected matroid M, then either the deletion or the contraction of e from M is connected. If, for every element of M, exactly one of these minors is connected, then we call M minor-minimally-connected. This paper characterizes such matroids and shows that they must contain a number of two-element circuits or cocircuits. In addition, a new bound is proved on the number of 2-cocircuits in a minimally connected matroid. © 1984.

Cenozoic Tectonic History Of The Sierra De Perija, Venezuela- Colombia, And Adjacent Basins, James N. Kellogg Jan 1984

Cenozoic Tectonic History Of The Sierra De Perija, Venezuela- Colombia, And Adjacent Basins, James N. Kellogg

Faculty Publications

The four major Cenozoic tectonic phases in the Sierra de Perija and adjacent basins are the early Eocene tectonic phase, the middle Eocene Caribbean orogeny, the late Oligocene phase, and the late Miocene to present Andean orogeny. Ages of unconformities associated with particularly rapid regional uplift during these phases are early Eocene (53 m.y.), middle Eocene (45 m.y.), late Oligocene (25 m.y.), and Pliocene (3 m.y.). Northwest-southeast compression may have commenced in the Perija and the Maracaibo Basin as early as the early Eocene. By the early Eocene the Macoa-Totumo arch had begun to to form during intense alpine-type folding …

Extension Of Darby's Model Of A Hydrophylic Gas Fed Porous Electrode, Ralph E. White, M. A. Nicholson, L. G. Kleine, J. Van Zee, R. Darby

Faculty Publications

A model presented previously by one of the authors (1,2) is reviewed and extended. Aspects of this model which were not previously available in the open literature are considered, and the model is extended to include previously neglected terms in the governing differential equations, fractional reaction orders in the current density-overpotential expression, and mass-transfer coefficients to account for mass-transfer resistance of the reactants to the faces of the porous electrode. The model is used to predict quantities of interest for oxygen reduction in an acidic aqueous solution in a porous carbon electrode.

13C Nmr Investigation Of Nonenzymatic Glucosylation Of Protein, Carolyn I. Neglia, Helga J. Cohen, Albert R. Garber, Paul D. Ellis, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes Dec 1983

13C Nmr Investigation Of Nonenzymatic Glucosylation Of Protein, Carolyn I. Neglia, Helga J. Cohen, Albert R. Garber, Paul D. Ellis, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Faculty Publications

Nonenzymatic glucosylation of protein is initiated by the reversible condensation of glucose in its open chain form with the amino groups on the protein. The initial product is an aldimine (Schiff base) which cyclizes to the glycosylamine derivative. The aldimine can undergo a slow Amadori rearrangement to yield the relatively stable ketoamine adduct which is structurally analogous to fructose. 13C NMR has been used to characterize these early products of nonenzymatic glucosylation, using RNase A as a model protein. C-1 of the beta-pyranose anomer of the glycosylamine was identified at 88.8 ppm in the spectrum of RNase glucosylated approximately 1:1 …

Magnetic Field Behavior Of A Josephson-Junction Array: Two-Dimensional Flux Transport On A Periodic Substrate, Richard A. Webb, Richard F. Voss, G. Grinstein, P. M. Horn Aug 1983

Magnetic Field Behavior Of A Josephson-Junction Array: Two-Dimensional Flux Transport On A Periodic Substrate, Richard A. Webb, Richard F. Voss, G. Grinstein, P. M. Horn

Faculty Publications

This Letter reports measurements down to 3 mK of the magnetic field dependence of the resistance and critical current of a weakly coupled periodic array of Josephson junctions. Below 700 mK the resistance is an oscillatory function of field. The temperature dependence of the resistance for integral numbers of flux quanta per cell suggests the existence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition involving the unbinding of defects in the flux lattice.

Nonenzymatic Glucosylation And Glucose-Dependent Cross-Linking Of Protein, Albert S. Eble, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes Aug 1983

Nonenzymatic Glucosylation And Glucose-Dependent Cross-Linking Of Protein, Albert S. Eble, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Faculty Publications

A model system using RNase A has been established for studying the nonenzymatic glucosylation and glucose-dependent cross-linking of protein (Maillard reaction) under physiological conditions in vitro. The rate of glucosylation of RNase was first order in glucose. Glucosylation was accompanied by a comparable decrease in primary amino groups in the protein and lysine recoverable by amino acid analysis. Analysis of glucosylation reaction mixtures by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of mercaptoethanol revealed the time-dependent formation of RNase dimer and trimer. The polymerization reaction was mixed order with respect to glucose concentration, but was approximately first order with …

Unification Of Ernst-Equation Backlund Transformations Using A Modified Wahlquist-Estabrook Technique; Wahlquist-Estabrook, B. Kent Harrison Aug 1983

Unification Of Ernst-Equation Backlund Transformations Using A Modified Wahlquist-Estabrook Technique; Wahlquist-Estabrook, B. Kent Harrison

Faculty Publications

The three known Backlund transformations for the Ernst equation are derived using a modification of the Wahlquist-Estabrook prolongation procedure. The modification requires that the equation to be studied be cast into a set of differential forms and their exterior derivatives, such that all coefficients are constant (a "CC ideal''). Analysis of the resulting equations produces 16 solutions composed of the three basic transformations combined with identity and other essentially trivial transformations. The group structure of the transformations is discussed. A Backlund transformation (already known) for the Ernst-Maxwell equations can be found by the same method. Promising generalizations are mentioned.

Library Use Patterns Among Full- And Part-Time Faculty And Students, Jo Bell Whitlatch Jan 1983

Library Use Patterns Among Full- And Part-Time Faculty And Students, Jo Bell Whitlatch

Faculty Publications

Trends in higher education are toward part-time students and majors in professional fields which are associated with low library use. Research findings at San Jose State University, California and other academic libraries, demonstrate that declining library use may be a future trend. Declining use will further erode administrative support for library budgets. Libraries must become effective in identifying and meeting the information needs of new nontraditional students. User surveys establishing service priorities can be an effective tool in planning library service for future student and faculty populations.

Fluorine, Richard H. Langley, Larry Welch Jan 1983

Fluorine, Richard H. Langley, Larry Welch

Faculty Publications

Considering the long time in which fluorine compounds have been used it seems rather surprising that it was not isolated as an element until 1886. This long delay was not due to lack of effort, but to the reactivity of fluorine and the hazards of working with it and many of its compounds.

Mixed-Hardwood Thinning Optimization, Steven H. Bullard Jan 1983

Mixed-Hardwood Thinning Optimization, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Upland hardwood forest types are .by far the most widespread in the United States. Stands of the oak-hickory forest type alone include 109 million acres, 23 percent of the Nation's commercial timberland (U.S. Forest Service 1982) . Many even-aged upland hardwood stands developed on nonindustrial private lands through hardwood invasion after pine stands were harvested. In 1973, half of the hardwood timber in the South was determined to be on upland sites which formerly supported pine stands (Murphy and Knight 1974). Many nonindustrial private landowners passively permit the biologically better adapted hardwoods to increase after the harvest of pines. These …

Variability Of Sediment Removal In A Semi-Arid Watershed, William L. Graf Jan 1983

Variability Of Sediment Removal In A Semi-Arid Watershed, William L. Graf

Faculty Publications

Field and documentary data from Walnut Gulch Watershed, an instrumented semiarid drainage basin of approximately 150 km2 (57 mi2) in southeastern Arizona, show that 83% of the alluvium removed from the basin during a 15‐year erosion episode beginning about 1930 was excavated from the highest‐order stream. The amount of alluvium removed in the erosion episode would have been equal to a covering of about 4 cm (1.6 in) over the entire basin. The rate of sediment removal during the erosion episode was 18 times greater than the rate of present channel sediment transport. Production of sediment from slopes and channel …

A Model Of The Bromine/Bromide Electrode Reaction At A Rotating Disk Electrode, Ralph E. White, S. E. Lorimer Jan 1983

A Model Of The Bromine/Bromide Electrode Reaction At A Rotating Disk Electrode, Ralph E. White, S. E. Lorimer

Faculty Publications

A mathematical model is presented for the Br2/Br– electrode reaction at a rotating disk electrode. The model includes current density-overpotential expressions for the electrode reaction according to either the Volmer-Heyrovsky (V-H) or the Volmer-Tafel (V-T) mechanism and the transport equations including the effect of ionic migration. The model is used to predict current-overpotential curves for various cases of interest. Qualitative comparison of the model predictions to literature data shows that either the V-H or the V-T mechanism, with V controlling, may be acceptable for the Br2/Br– reaction.
