Maximizing Expected Profits In Competitive Bidding, Steven H. Bullard Jan 1985

Maximizing Expected Profits In Competitive Bidding, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Forest products firms often buy much of their raw material through competitive bidding. The bidding process is vital to such companies, yet models are often used which merely help predict winning bids. Managers should consider expected returns from potential timber buying contracts-the product of profit and the prob· ability of realizing that profit. A general approach is summarized for maximizing expected profit in competitive bidding. For timber buying, profits are net returns minus stumpage costs. The probability of obtaining the profit is the probability a given bid will be accepted, and can be represented by a probability density function. The …

Estimating Optimal Thinning And Rotation For Mixed-Species Timber Stands Using A Random Search Algorithm, Steven H. Bullard, Hanif D. Sherali, W. David Klemperer

Faculty Publications

The problem of optimal density over time for even-aged, mixed-species stands is formulated as a nonlinear-integer programming problem with numbers of trees cut by species and diameter class as decision variables. The model is formulated using a stand-table projection growth model to predict mixed-speciesg rowth and stand-structureO. ptimal thinning and final harvest age are estimated simultaneously using heuristic random search algorithms. Legal Theory And The Pivotal Role Of The Concept Of Coercion, Dale A. Nance Jan 1985

Legal Theory And The Pivotal Role Of The Concept Of Coercion, Dale A. Nance

Faculty Publications

This paper addresses an important problem in modem legal philosophy: the problem of identifying the proper role of the concept of coercion in a general theory of the nature of law. The present state of philosophical art on this topic is the legacy of difficulties arising from a naive positivism - generally thought to have over-emphasized the role of coercive power. The resulting reaction in modem jurisprudence against the focus upon coercion reflects a failure to come to grips fully with the underlying methodological issues of descriptive legal theory.

T0-Spaces And Pointwise Convergence, Jimmie D. Lawson Jan 1985

T0-Spaces And Pointwise Convergence, Jimmie D. Lawson

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to give several different characterizations of those T0-spaces E with the property that if F:X × E → Y is separately continuous, then it is jointly continuous. One such is that the lattice 0(E) of open sets of E be a hypercontinuous lattice (i.e. the interval topology on 0(E) is Hausdorff). If E is a sober space, then E must be a quasicontinuous poset endowed with the Scott topology. © 1985.

The Pointwise-Local-Global Principle For Solutions Of Generic Linear Equations, William A. Adkins Jan 1985

The Pointwise-Local-Global Principle For Solutions Of Generic Linear Equations, William A. Adkins

Faculty Publications

The problem studied in this paper is to determine some conditions on a matrix A over a ring R which will insure that the matrix equation Au = f is solvable over R if it is solvable over the residue field {A figure is presented}({A figure is presented}) for every {A figure is presented} ∈ Spec R. If R is a regular local ring (containing a field), a polynomial ring over an algebraically close field, or the ring of holomorphic functions on a Stein manifold, then a sufficient condition on A for pointwise solvability to imply global solvability is that …

Using Parameter Estimation Techniques With A Simple Model Of A Diaphragm-Type Electrolyzer To Predict The Electrical Energy Cost For Naoh Production, John Van Zee, Ralph E. White Jan 1985

Using Parameter Estimation Techniques With A Simple Model Of A Diaphragm-Type Electrolyzer To Predict The Electrical Energy Cost For Naoh Production, John Van Zee, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

Predictions of the electrical energy cost for NaOH production are determined as a function of the independent operating variables and diaphragm characterizing properties. The predictions are based on data from a statistically designed experiment, a simple model of a diaphragm-type electrolyzer, a simple model of the cell voltage losses, and parameter estimation techniques. The data were obtained over a sufficiently large range of operating conditions so that the resulting design equation may be industrially useful. The simple model of the diaphragm is based on the mass transport of the hydroxyl ion, a linear potential gradient, and is presented in terms …

Interpolating Sequences On Curves, Samih Obaid, D. Rung

Faculty Publications

We established a condition on boundary curves (ending at points) lying either in the unit disc or the upper half plane which implies that any consecutively separated sequence, in the hyperbolic distance, lying on one of these curves is an interpolating sequence for bounded holomorphic functions.

Raman Microprobe Determination Of Local Crystal Orientation In Laser Annealed Silicon, J. B. Hopkins, L. A. Farrow, G. J. Fisanick Dec 1984

Raman Microprobe Determination Of Local Crystal Orientation In Laser Annealed Silicon, J. B. Hopkins, L. A. Farrow, G. J. Fisanick

Faculty Publications

In this letter we discuss the application of polarization selective Raman microprobe spectroscopy to the detailed, nondestructive analysis of the local crystal orientation of a polycrystalline silicon sample grown over SiO 2 pads and laser annealed. Intensity measurements taken as a function of input polarization angle are fit to an expression derived from the Raman scattering selection rules to calculate the angles by which the crystal structure is twisted within the original substrate plane, as well as the degree of tipping of the crystal plane away from the plane of the Si substrate.

Absence Of Minimum Metallic Conductivity In Gd(3-X)Vxs4 At Very Low Temperature And Evidence For A Coulomb Gap, S. Washburn, Richard A. Webb, S. Von Molnar, F. Holtzberg Nov 1984

Absence Of Minimum Metallic Conductivity In Gd(3-X)Vxs4 At Very Low Temperature And Evidence For A Coulomb Gap, S. Washburn, Richard A. Webb, S. Von Molnar, F. Holtzberg

Faculty Publications

Gd(3-x)vxS4 provides a convenient analog of a compensated semiconductor in which, for x≃0.3, the mobility edge can be tuned smoothly through the Fermi energy by the application of a magnetic field. The results of a search for a minimum metallic conductivity demonstrate that, down to T=6 mK, the metal-insulator transition is smooth. In the insulating regime, the temperature dependence of the conductivity was more consistent with the theory of mutual interactions than with the theory of pure localization.

Magnetoresistance Of Small, Quasi-One-Dimensional, Normal-Metal Rings And Lines, C. P. Umbach, S. Washburn, R. B. Laibowitz, Richard A. Webb Oct 1984

Magnetoresistance Of Small, Quasi-One-Dimensional, Normal-Metal Rings And Lines, C. P. Umbach, S. Washburn, R. B. Laibowitz, Richard A. Webb

Faculty Publications

The magnetoresistance of sub-0.4-μm-diam Au and Au60Pd40 rings was measured in a perpendicular magnetic field at temperatures as low as 5 mK in search of simple, periodic resistance oscillations that would be evidence of flux quantization in normal-metal rings. However, instead of simple oscillations, a very complex structure developed in the magnetoresistance at low temperatures. Fourier analysis of all the data did not reveal convincing evidence for flux quantization in the rings. Complex structure similar to that observed in the rings was also found in the magnetoresistance of short, narrow, Au and Au60Pd …

Characterization Of Glycated Proteins By 13C Nmr Spectroscopy, Carolyn I. Neglia, Helga J. Cohen, Albert R. Garber, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Faculty Publications

13C NMR spectroscopy has been used to characterize Amadori (ketoamine) adducts formed by reaction of [2-13C]glucose with free amino groups of protein. The spectra of glycated proteins were acquired in phosphate buffer at pH 7.4 and were interpreted by reference to the spectra of model compounds, N alpha-formyl-N epsilon-fructose-lysine and glycated poly-L-lysine (GlcPLL). The anomeric carbon region of the spectrum (approximately 90-105 ppm) of glycated cytochrome c was superimposable on that of N alpha-formyl-N epsilon-fructose-lysine, and contained three peaks characteristic of the alpha- and beta-furanose and beta-pyranose anomers of Amadori adducts to peripheral lysine residues on protein (pK alpha approximately …

The Expectation Of Success Using A Monte Carlo Factoring Method – Some Statistics On Quadratic Class Numbers, Duncan A. Buell Jul 1984

The Expectation Of Success Using A Monte Carlo Factoring Method – Some Statistics On Quadratic Class Numbers, Duncan A. Buell

Faculty Publications

A method has been proposed for factoring an integer N by using the structure of the class groups of quadratic fields of radicand – kN for various small multipliers k. We discuss the method and an implementation of the method, and various theoretical questions which have an impact on the practical use of the method in factoring. Some of the theoretical questions relate to the nature of class numbers and class groups; we present extensive statistical results on the class numbers and class groups of imaginary quadratic fields.

Isotropy Group Description Of A Phase Transition In Nano3, W. Scott Stornetta, Dorian M. Hatch Jun 1984

Isotropy Group Description Of A Phase Transition In Nano3, W. Scott Stornetta, Dorian M. Hatch

Faculty Publications

Predictions of the possible post-transition symmetries of an R 3c zone center continuous phase transition are made using recent extensions of the Landau theory. The Landau theory is summarized and direct group theoretical methods are applied to the R 3c phase. General techniques for solving systems of nonlinear polynomial equations are reviewed and these techniques are applied to the minimization of the free energy F for the aforementioned possible symmetries. The results of the direct methods and the minimization procedures are shown to be compatible. It is shown that the transition to R 3c in NaNO3 is consistent with the …

Error-Bounds For Gaussian Quadrature And Weighted-L1 Polynomial Approximation, Ronald A. Devore, L R. Scott Apr 1984

Error-Bounds For Gaussian Quadrature And Weighted-L1 Polynomial Approximation, Ronald A. Devore, L R. Scott

Faculty Publications

Error bounds for Gaussian quadrature are given in terms of the number of quadrature points and smoothness properties of the function whose integral is being approximated. An intermediate step involves a weighted-L' polynomial approximation problem which is treated in a more general context than that specifically required to bound the Gaussian quadrature error.

International Relations Theory, Foreign Policy Substitutability, And "Nice" Laws, Benjamin A. Most, Harvey Starr Apr 1984

International Relations Theory, Foreign Policy Substitutability, And "Nice" Laws, Benjamin A. Most, Harvey Starr

Faculty Publications

Two logical problems appear to have impeded the development of an integrative understanding of international and foreign policy phenomena. The first has to do with the potential for foreign policy substitutability: through time and across space, similar factors could plausibly be expected to trigger different foreign policy acts. The second concerns the potential existence of “sometimes true,” domain-specific laws. It is the logical opposite of the substitution problem, suggesting that different processes could plausibly be expected to lead to similar results. Neither problem appears to be well understood in the current literature; if anything, both are ignored. Nevertheless, they are …

Issues Concerning Phreatophyte Clearing, Revegetation, And Water Savings Along The Gila River, Arizona, William L. Graf, Duncan T. Patten, Bonnie Turner Apr 1984

Issues Concerning Phreatophyte Clearing, Revegetation, And Water Savings Along The Gila River, Arizona, William L. Graf, Duncan T. Patten, Bonnie Turner

Faculty Publications

A detailed analysis of the published results of the U. S. Geological Survey Phreatophyte Project conducted in the area of interest for the Corps of Engineers Camelsback Dam study provides the following results. It appears that the figure of 18.53 inches per year for water savings from phreatophyte clearing along the Gila River in southeast Arizona should not be used for predicting potential water salvage because of large sampling errors, measurement errors, and the inherent variability of the natural processes of evapotranspiration. An extensive literature review shows that no dependable values are available for the Gila River project area. It …

Weak Localization Of Two-Dimensional Conduction Holes, S. Washburn, Richard A. Webb, E. E. Mendez, L. L. Chang, L. Esaki Mar 1984

Weak Localization Of Two-Dimensional Conduction Holes, S. Washburn, Richard A. Webb, E. E. Mendez, L. L. Chang, L. Esaki

Faculty Publications

We report transport measurements which we interpret as weak localization of two-dimensional conduction holes in a GaSb-InAs-GaSb quantum-well structure. This system is unique in that it has parallel conduction channels containing both holes and electrons. The longitudinal resistance of the sample was measured for temperatures between 0.006 and 25 K; the magnetoresistance was measured in a perpendicular magnetic field. Weak localization of the holes was indicated by negative magnetoresistance and by a large logarithmic correction to the conductivity.

Five-Dimensional Quasispin And The Spectra Of Odd-Parity Yrast Configurations In The Ba Region, K. J. Weeks, J. P. Draayer, K. T. Hecht

Faculty Publications

The 5-dimensional quasispin formalism is used to evaluate the (n, T)-dependent factors of the matrix elements of abnormal parity operators of relevance for yrast-band spectroscopy. The formalism allows the leading pseudo-SU(3) representation of the normal (N) parity part of a shell-model configuration to be coupled to low-seniority states of the abnormal (A) parity high-j intruder part of the configuration. To illustrate the importance of the nA, TA dependence of the (A) to (N) space-coupling matrix elements this model is applied to the negative-parity yrast spectra of 127La and 127Ba, using hamiltonian parameters which give a reasonable fit for 126Ba. The …
