Predicting Shunt Currents In Stacks Of Bipolar Plate Cells, Ralph E. White, C. W. Walton, H. S. Burney, R. N. Beaver
Faculty Publications
A method is presented for predicting shunt currents in stacks of undivided and divided bipolar plate cells. The method is an efficient way of solving the coupled sets of algebraic equations that arise from using circuit analog models to represent the current paths in stacks of undivided or divided bipolar plate cells. These algebraic equations can be eitherlinear or nonlinear depending upon the current-potential relationships used in the model (i.e., nonlinear circuit elements can be included). The method is used to show the importance of including nonsymmetrical resistances and nonlinear circuit elements in the models. Also, the method …

A Mathematical Model Of A Zn/Br2 Cell On Charge, M J. Mader, Ralph E. White
A Mathematical Model Of A Zn/Br2 Cell On Charge, M J. Mader, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
A mathematical model of a parallel plate electrochemical cell with a separator and a homogeneous bulk reaction is presented. The model is based on the Zn/Br2 redox couple and can be used as an aid for the design of an efficient rechargeable storage battery. It is shown that four independent variables exist for the system at a fixed temperature: the effective separator thickness, the residence time, the channel width, and the potential driving force. Performance criteria of interest for the Zn/Br2 battery are defined. Predictions of performance during the charging process are presented. It is shown that the …
Sequences In Power Residue Classes, Duncan A. Buell, Richard H. Hudson
Sequences In Power Residue Classes, Duncan A. Buell, Richard H. Hudson
Faculty Publications
Using A. Weil’s estimates the authors have given bounds for the largest prime P0 such that all primes P > P0 have sequences of quadratic residues of length m. For m ≤ 8 the smallest prime having m consecutive quadratic residues is ≡ 3(mod 4) and P0 ≡ 1 (mod 4). The reason for this phenomenon is investigated in this paper and the theory developed is used to successfully uncover analogous phenomena for rth power residues, r ≥ 2, r even.
Simple Models For Diaphragm-Type Chlorine/Caustic Cells Ii. Effect Of Acidic Anolyte On Steady-State Caustic Yield, John Van Zee, Ralph E. White
Simple Models For Diaphragm-Type Chlorine/Caustic Cells Ii. Effect Of Acidic Anolyte On Steady-State Caustic Yield, John Van Zee, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
A simple steady-state model of a diaphragm-type chlorine/caustic cell in which the diaphragm is divided into two regions by a homogeneous acid-base reaction is presented. The location of the reaction affects significantly the caustic yield and effluent concentration. The model is used to predict the location of this reaction as a function of the operating variables, the physical constants, and three measurable properties of the diaphragm. These measurable properties are the MacMullin number or resistivity ratio of electrolyte-filled diaphragm relative to the electrolyte, the Darcy's law diaphragmpermeability, and the diaphragm thickness. The model is used to predict a maximum in …

Simple Models For Diaphragm-Type Chlorine/Caustic Cells I. Dynamic Behavior, John Van Zee, Ralph E. White, A T. Watson
Faculty Publications
A simple model of the dynamic behavior of a diaphragm-type chlorine/caustic cell is presented. The model is based upon measurable diaphragm properties and the mass transfer of hydroxyl ion through the diaphragm. The anolyte is modeled simply as a region in which the OH– ion concentration is fixed, the diaphragm is modeled as a plug-flow reactor with an electrochemical reaction occurring at the catholyte/diaphragm interface where the cathode is placed, and the catholyte is modeled as a completely stirred flow reactor. Analytical integration of the governing equations for thesemodels yields two mathematical expressions: one for the concentration distribution of …
Parallel Plate Electrochemical Reactor Model: Material Balance Closure And A Simplification, M J. Mader, C W. Walton, Ralph E. White
Parallel Plate Electrochemical Reactor Model: Material Balance Closure And A Simplification, M J. Mader, C W. Walton, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
A material balance closure calculation is presented to test the consistency of a previously published model of a parallelplate electrochemical reactor. New expressions are used in this procedure to calculate the average concentration of species i and the average current density for reaction j from the predicted concentration and potential distributions. Also, the previously presented model equations are simplified by assuming that the axial concentration gradient for species i can be approximated by a step change from the known feed concentration to the unknown outlet concentration. This one-step model provides a qualitative evaluation of cell performance and adds insight into …

A Mathematical Model For A Parallel Plate Electrochemical Reactor, Cstr, And Associated Recirculation System, T V. Nguyen, C W. Walton, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
A mathematical model is presented for a system comprised of a parallel plate electrochemical reactor (PPER) and a continuous, stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) under both total and partial recycle. The model is used to predict the time dependent behavior of the electrowinning of copper from an aqueous, hydrochloric acid solution. The model includes many important aspects of a PPER/CSTR system which have been neglected previously. These aspects are the kinetics of electrode reactions, the electroneutrality condition, three mass transfer processes for ionic species in the electrolyte (diffusion, ionic migration, and convection) and the electrode gap in the PPER, and the inclusion …
A Policy Analysis Of Fee-Shifting Rules Under The Internal Revenue Code, Gary Myers, Richard L. Schmalbeck
A Policy Analysis Of Fee-Shifting Rules Under The Internal Revenue Code, Gary Myers, Richard L. Schmalbeck
Faculty Publications
Until recently, the costs of litigating federal tax cases were borne exclusively by the parties who incurred them, regardless of whether the government or the taxpayer prevailed in the litigation. This practice reflects the application to tax disputes of the ‘American rule’ against fee shifting. Although the American rule continues to be predominant in the tax area, it has been modified in important respects. An explicit fee-reimbursement rule, benefiting prevailing taxpayers in cases in which the government is found to have acted unreasonably, was added to the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) by the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of …

Interconnected Reproductive And Vegetative Remains Of Populus (Salicaceae) From The Middle Eocene Green River Formation, Northeastern Utah, William D. Tidwell, Steven R. Manchester, David L. Dilcher
Faculty Publications
A new specimen from the Middle Eocene Evacuation Creek Member of the Green River Formation in northeastern Utah shows a twig with several leaves of Populus wilmattae Crockrell and a fruiting raceme attache. This specimen establishes for the first time the type of fruits borne by P. wilmattae and provides additional characters with which to assess its taxonomic and evolutionary status. An associated seed shows attached placental hairs like those of extant species of Populus. The Green River fossil differs from extant Populus species in having basically palmate leaf venation and in bearing its fruiting axis on a young twig. …

The Place Of Procedural Control In Determining Who May Sue Or Be Sued: Lessons In Statutory Interpretation From Civil Rico And Sedima, Douglas E. Abrams
The Place Of Procedural Control In Determining Who May Sue Or Be Sued: Lessons In Statutory Interpretation From Civil Rico And Sedima, Douglas E. Abrams
Faculty Publications
When a federal court resolves equipoise in its effort to determine the contours of a litigant class created by an express private cause of action, the court should consider the control that the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, taken as a whole, exercise on the conduct of litigation. With civil RICO as background, part II presents this thesis and discusses the circumstances in which procedural control would be an element supporting a determination *1481 that Congress created a broad litigant class. Implicit in the notion of equipoise is the threshold recognition that when a court engages in statutory interpretation, it …

The amplitude of h/e periodic oscillations in the magnetoresistance of very small normal-metal (Au) rings, as well as the harmonic h/2e, have been studied as a function of temperature. The amplitudes depend on the temperature T roughly as T-1/2, as expected from the averaging of conduction channels in the absence of inelastic scattering, but may not be entirely consistent with this model. At the lowest T, the size of the fluctuations in the conductance is about ΔG∼e2/h, as predicted recently.
Glycation Of Amino Groups In Protein, Nancy G. Watkins, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes
Glycation Of Amino Groups In Protein, Nancy G. Watkins, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes
Faculty Publications
Ribonuclease A has been used as a model protein for studying the specificity of glycation of amino groups in protein under physiological conditions (phosphate buffer, pH 7.4, 37 “C). Incubation of RNase with glucose led to an enhanced rate of inactivation of the enzyme relative to the rate of modification of lysine residues, suggesting preferential modification of active site lysine residues. Sites of glycation of RNase were identified by amino acid analysis of tryptic peptides isolated by reverse-phase high pressure liquid chromatography and phenylboronate affinity chromatography. Schiff base adducts were trapped with Na- BH&N and the a-amino group of Lys-1 …

A Generalized Molien Function For Field Theoretical Hamiltonians, Jeffrey W. Felix, Dorian M. Hatch
A Generalized Molien Function For Field Theoretical Hamiltonians, Jeffrey W. Felix, Dorian M. Hatch
Faculty Publications
A generating function, or Molien function, the coefficients of which give the number of independent polynomial invariants in G, has been useful in the Landau and renormalization group theories of phase transitions. Here a generalized Molien function for a field theoretical Hamiltonian (with short-range interactions) of the most general form invariant in a group G is derived. This form is useful for more general renormalization group calculations. Its Taylor series is calculated to low order for the FGamma-2 representation of the space group R[3 bar]c and also for the l=1 (faithful) representation of SO(3).

Observation Of H/E Aharonov-Bohm Oscillations In Normal-Metal Rings, Richard A. Webb, S. Washburn, C. P. Umbach, R. B. Laibowitz
Faculty Publications
Magnetoresistance oscillations periodic with respect to the flux h/e have been observed in submicron-diameter Au rings, along with weaker h/2e oscillations. The h/e oscillations persist to very large magnetic fields. The background structure in the magnetoresistance was not symmetric about zero field. The temperature dependence of both the amplitude of the oscillations and the background are consistent with the recent theory by Stone.
Effects Of Dissipation And Temperature On Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling, S. Washburn, Richard A. Webb, R. F. Voss, S. M. Faris
Effects Of Dissipation And Temperature On Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling, S. Washburn, Richard A. Webb, R. F. Voss, S. M. Faris
Faculty Publications
Measurements of the tunneling rate Γ out of the zero-voltage state for several Nb edge junctions with differing shunt capacitances are described. At zero temperature, increasing the shunt capacitance lowers Γ in agreement with dissipative calculations of the macroscopic-quantum-tunneling rate. As temperature increases, ln[Γ(T)/Γ(0)]∝T2 as recently predicted.

Origin Of The Peaked Structure In The Conductance Of One-Dimensional Silicon Accumulation Layers, Richard A. Webb, A. Hartstein, J. J. Wainer, A. B. Fowler
Faculty Publications
We have made extensive studies of the temperature, gate voltage, and electric field dependences of the conductance peaks in small silicon inversion layers in order to distinguish between resonant-tunneling models and a hopping model. We find that many of the peaks are consistent only with a hopping model, whereas some could be consistent with an early resonant-tunneling model. None of our structure is consistent with resonant tunneling if the recent formulation of Stone and Lee is correct.
Uses And Abuses Of Wastewater Injection Wells In Hawaii, F. L. Peterson, June Ann Oberdorfer
Uses And Abuses Of Wastewater Injection Wells In Hawaii, F. L. Peterson, June Ann Oberdorfer
Faculty Publications
During the past two decades in Hawaii, more than 500 injection wells for the disposal of domestic sewage wastewater have been constructed and operated. Thus far, contamination of potable groundwater supplies has not been a problem. Many of the injection wells, however, have not performed as designed, and aquifer clogging and reduced injection capacity have produced numerous well failures resulting in public health, legal, and financial problems. Factors most commonly responsible for the well problems have been unfavorable hydrogeology, underdesign of injection well capacity, poor effluent quality, and lack of injection well maintenance. Detailed study of clogging mechanisms in the …

Faculty Publications
In major prospective studies it has been reported that high heart rate at rest predicts the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) or cardiovascular disease (CVD) in men, but the mechanisms producing these relationships are unknown. Since lipoprotein levels contribute strongly to the risk of CHD and CVD, we examined the relationship of resting heart rate to plasma concentrations of high-density (HDL), low-density (LDL), and very low-density (VLDL) lipoproteins, apolipoprotein (apo) A-I and A-II, and serum concentrations of lipoprotein subfractions in 81 men to determine if atherogenic lipoproteins could potentially induce the reported association of heart rate with development of …
Distributional Analysis For Discontinuous Fields, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Distributional Analysis For Discontinuous Fields, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Faculty Publications
The jump conditions that hold across singular surfaces for the fields having step function discontinuities do not, in general, apply if these surfaces themselves carry concentrated fields. In this note, the general situation when the surfaces of discontinuity carry multilayers and deform as they propagate is discussed. Formulas are presented for the first and second derivatives for these multilayers. © 1985.
Example Of A Group Action Determined Phase Transition, Jeffrey W. Felix, Dorian M. Hatch
Example Of A Group Action Determined Phase Transition, Jeffrey W. Felix, Dorian M. Hatch
Faculty Publications
The principles of the group action approach to structural phase transitions are outlined. It is assumed that all properties of the transition are determined by the action of a single physically irreducible represention of the space group of the more symmetric phase. We determine the isotropy groups using the image space of the representation. The free energy minima are determined to fourth order and to all orders using the results of Gufan and then compared. This theory is applied to Calcite (Roverline3c) to determine all possible continuous commensurate phase transitions.

New Shubnikov-De Haas Effects In A Two-Dimensional Electron-Hole System, S. Washburn, Richard A. Webb, E. E. Mendez, L. L. Chang, L. Esaki
Faculty Publications
We report the temperature dependence of the Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations from a two-dimensional electron-hole system in GaSb-InAs-GaSb quantum wells at very low temperatures. The samples are double heterostructures containing separate electron and hole layers. The oscillations arising from the electron layer behave regularly with temperature. Additional oscillations, characterized by strong temperature dependence, and relatively large peak widths are believed to arise from the presence of hole layers.
